Mac Pro 2007 and the Bootloader issues with EFI

So, I've been working to get Arch on an old mac pro that I'm currently using for work.  This is the oldest of the old Mac Pros ever made, and uses 32-bit EFI and has 32GB of ram.  This means that I need to use a 64-bit OS, but am having immense difficulty getting it to boot.
I am installing to /dev/sdb, and /dev/sda contains the EFI partition and Mac OSX.
I'm currently using rEFInd liveCD to find and boot the .efi files.  I can select and boot into grub2 (which is stored completely on the EFI partition on /dev/sda), and have been able configure it so that it can find the vmlinuz-linux and initrd successfully (both stored on /dev/sdb2), but whenever I try to boot it, I get the following message:
"No suitable video mode found.
Booting in blind mode"
At which time no keyboard input is accepted, and I have to reboot and try again.  I know that the system uses UGA, and I tried adding that to grub.conf, but no results. Even with grub-mkconfig, I cannot get it to boot without receiving that error message.
How can I get my system to boot correctly?  I've been working on this for about a week, so all help is appreciated.
Here was my process.
Steps:
1. Tried to install from new arch linux media.  The media would not boot, no matter what I tried. Changed to 64-bit Archbang live-cd. Booted fine.
2. Created a GPT disk with a protective MBR on /dev/sdb (/dev/sda contains the EFI fat32 partition and the macintosh OS).
3. Installed Archbang onto GPT disk on /dev/sdb3, as /root /dev/sdb4 as /home, /dev/sdb2 as /boot and /dev/sda1 as /boot/efi
4. Chrooted from the LiveCD into the disk, updated pacman, installed grub-efi-i386, built the sysimage and kernel (stored in /boot on /dev/sdb2), and grub mkconfig storing all of it to the EFI partition at /boot/efi/EFI/grub
Gdisk prints the following for /dev/sdb
Disk /dev/sdb: 976773168 sectors, 465.8 GiB
Logical sector size: 512 bytes
Disk identifier (GUID): 43A3E85A-F473-468C-B361-6B3383AA65C5

bsilbaugh wrote:In regards to the step 1 you described in your post, you mentioned difficulty booting "arch linux media". What did you mean by "arch linux media"? Is this a CD you burned containing the latest Arch Linux ISO? If so, did you verify the checksum of the iso image you downloaded, and that it burned correctly to CD?
Yes. I verified that the 2012.09.07 official Arch Linux installation iso burned correctly and that the checksum was correct.  What happened was that the disc would attempt to load after selecting it in the Mac bootloader, and then I would get a black screen with the following

At this point the keyboard was unresponsive, and not recognized by the USB bus (I use a backlit keyboard, and it was not lit).  So I changed strategies.
WonderWoofy wrote:You say that you need to use a 64-bit OS, don't you mean 32-bit.
No, I mean that I have to be able to use 32 Gigabytes of RAM with any application I am using, which cannot be done with a 32-bit OS.  This system is used for Memory intensive 3D images and volumes.
WonderWoofy wrote:A 32-bit EFI is incapable of booting a 64-bit OS.  I should know, I have a late 2006 MacBook and spent quite a bit of time banging my head against the wall over this.  If you want to use a 64-bit OS, you have to use bios emulation.  This is in fact why those other distros you mention above boot correctly.  Many Mac users tend to (incorrectly) call this mode bootcamp.
Can you provide a link with a procedure or more information about booting in BIOS mode?  I think all the places I looked I ignored this because I wasn't sure what the difference was.
WonderWoofy wrote:I think with the new install discs and macs, you have to remove the UEFI.  Especially in your case where you need a 32-bit uefi, as this is not an option on the installer.  I tried booting an installer on my macbook, and it would not go.  These forums were filled with these threads a couple months ago, and the.redikulus.rat pointed everyone to a page in our wiki to remove the UEFI.  Personally I did not try I because my mac is not my main machine anymore, but it is reported to work.
You know you can install Arch from any live cd or other distro now that it is a chroot install method.  You could before, if you didn't use the AIF, but now there is no choice.  I think it would be especially easy with the archbang live cd, as I think that they use the same repositories.  So you should be able to install the arch-install-scripts package.  If not, you could always simply fire up links and download the package and manually install it.  Then you should be able to proceed like normal.
I am unclear what you mean with removing the UEFI.  Do you mean removing it from the kernel or the bootloader?  Please, point me to this page used by the.redikulus.rat.  As for the second half, I have already installed via chroot, and the difficulty is getting it to boot from anywhere.

  • Has anyone had issues with the new Mac Pro computers and the Adobe Application Manager?

We just purchased a new Mac Pro and transferred everything from the old computer to the new one.  Now we are getting Adobe Application Manager errors and it wants us to download Application Manager.  That leads us to the Adobe Installer that encounters the following issues
Installer failed to initialize.  Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem.  But that doesn't work either.
    Anyone run into this?

Yep, half of my tracks are coming up displaying an error -69 ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302684 ) and every time I remove a track from the shuffle or update the shuffle, Itunes opens a window displaying the contents of J:\ (obviously the ipod) and hidden folder \iPod_Control.... I'm really irked with this. Been mucking around with the stupid thing for hours now.
Nothing was wrong with it until it suddenly decided to stop working, it wouldn't play tracks and Itunes wouldn't recognise it, hadn't missed a beat up till now. Sifted through the Support site for an answer and getting told I needed to update Itunes and update the Ipod software, ***?? It was working fine before. Me thinks Apple have inserted software in ipod to force users to update to newer version of Itunes. Anyway, ever since updating to the latest Itunes, the Ipod is back in action, but it is trying to tell me that half of my mp3s are corrupt (see error -69), rofl, um no, it's your stupid software Apple, I'm off to by myself a decent MP3 player without the bloat software.

  • Mac Pro 6,1 STILL having issues with Open CL (4K scaling and SpeedGrade direct link grades)

I've seen the staff responses to the issues of the new Mac Pro GPU saying that 10.9.4 fixes everything. For me, it has fixed my export issues, so I'm glad. I'm no longer getting lines and artifacts on my renders.
    That's great.
However, I'm still having several issues, and they seem to be linked to Adobe and Open CL.
Here's a video that shows what's going on:
mac pro issues july 7 - YouTube
    Issue #1
Like most of you probably, I'm doing 1080p exports of most things I'm working on. The first project shows a 1080p timeline with a mix of 4k, 5k, and 720p footage. Because zooming in so much on a 720p file in a 4k timeline looks so crappy, I'm doing 1080p timelines and scaling everything to the size it needs to be. I started in a 4k timeline then switched to 1080p because the 720p footage looked so terrible. However, in the 4k timeline, I didn't have any of the issues I'm showing in this first part of the video.
When I switched to the 1080p timeline, I discovered a weird quirk: When I resize the 4k (or 5k) footage to the size it needs to be (which varies based on the frame I want), it goes back to the 100% view when I'm scrubbing through it. When I pause, the size of the video goes back to the way I set it. I show this in the video. Then I show what was my working solution for the time being: "scale to frame size", which brings all the videos to the size of the sequence frame size and works fine. Later, I turn off OpenCL in premiere and when I scrub through the video, it doesn't zoom back in or only stay at the size I set when stopped. For some reason all of these issues only happen at 50% scale or smaller. It doesn't happen at, say, 60%.
I've tested this with raw R3D files and other 4K (or 5K) clips (even clips exported from After Effects) and the same thing happens. It doesn't seem to happen with 2.5k footage or 1080p footage.
    Issue #2
This is the second project you'll see in the video.
After grading in speedgrade (through direct link) I open my project back up in premiere and start playing it back. The video plays back with delays and frame drops. Now normally, this would be expected. But this is 1080p pro res footage, and this is just an effect added, and the yellow bar appears indicating that open CL should be accelerating the playback and it should do so smoothly.
Maybe I was just wrong in assuming that a simple grade from speedgrade would be able to playback smoothly. I turn off the grade, and it plays normally.
But then, when I turn off open cl and leave the grade on, the video plays back without ANY issues.
So to me, it seems I'm still having issues with Open CL and adobe. I've found fixes that make it work temporarily, I don't need that kind of answer. However, I would like this to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Something I need to do to get this to work?
    Here are my specs:
    Mac Pro 6,1 (Late 2013)
    3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB (x2)
    OSX 10.9.4
    Firmware: 2.20f18
What you're seeing is latest version of Premiere (CC 2014, v8.0.0 [169] Build)
Everything here is ProRes 422, running from a Promise Pegasus2 R4 RAID (drives: 4x Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST4000DM000) (that's thunderbolt 2).
I've done everything: I've restarted my computer hundreds of times, I've reset NVRAM and PRAM and done power cycles.
This isn't just some issue that started with 10.9.3 of OSX, the 4k issues happened when I first switched to a 1080p sequence back in February (2014) or so, which means it was an issue even with 10.9.2 and the previous firmware release.
I've reported this issue to adobe.

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Premiere Pro 6 and Audition Audio issues with Kona Lhi

    Hello,
When I have Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition open at the same time, and I send an audio clip from Premiere Pro to Audition for editing, I have no sound in Audition. If I have only one of these programs open, the audio works fine in both. Since these programs are linked together it is essential that I have audio in both, even though, both programs are open. Is there a driver fix or some other way to get Premiere Pro to release the Kona Card LHi when switching to Audition? I am using a Mac Pro 2 x 2.4 6-core 24MB Ram 1333 DDR3 and Quadro 4000 with Kona Lhi Drivers 10.4.4 with Adobe presets.
    Thanks,

    Hello Dunamis,
Unfortunately this is a known issue with the Kona card. I know this is something they would like to fix but I'm uncertain on the timeframe.
There are times when this workflow will work without issue but when it goes into the bad state you will need to quit the apps.

  • The new Mac Pro's and the new iMacs

    Greetings,
I'm in the market to finally replace my G5 Mac tower for a more contemporary model. I see that Apple has finally refreshed the Mac Pro line. I was hoping for some CPU clarifications.
The iMacs all say they use i5's and i7 processors. But according to wikipedia, those are Nehalem processors. While looking over the Mac Pro's they claim they use either Nehalem or Westmere processors. From a general prospective, the Core i7 is the same as the Nehalem?
So if they use the same processor, wouldn't it be more cost effective to get a high end iMac (Core i7) over a low end Mac Pro (Nehalem?
Then there's the Westmere's. They also use the same name of core i5. So does that mean the iMacs use Westmere's or Nehalem's?
Why oh why does this have to be so complicated?!
    Thanks!

Intel chart (link from Barefeats) shows processor family. i7 "Bloomfield" is so... 2009 which is desktop subset name of Nehalem.

  • 2010 Mac Pro Crash and Firmware Update Issue

My 2010 Mac Pro crashes for no apparent reason. I have a couple FCP projects to finish and I cannot rely on this machine. I have the most recent problem report details and a pesky Firmware update that appears corrupted and refuses to install.
I've repaired permissions using Disk utility, applejack, and even used memtest to check that I didn't have a bad RAM module. All tasks ran successfully.
These may be 2 separate problems. I'm not sure at this point.
I'm using only 1/3 of the drive capacity for the OS drive and about on my Final Cut Media drive.
FCP is compatible. Been using it for nearly a year. Using a third drive for a Time Machine Back-up of all FCP media. The firmware update is specifically for the 2010 Mac Pro - Mac Pro EFI Update 1.5

    OK, thanks.
So I restored the original firmware, and I got through the update.
Here is what the update instructions should say:
"Once the flashing starts continue holding until the light is steady again."
I thnk my problem was that I released the button too soon.

  • HT5444 mac pro 2007 and later doesn't work with mountain lion

how do i downgrade back to a later version since lion or mountain lion dose not work with my pro tool 10 version?

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

  • New to a Mac in general and having multiple issues with iTunes - Help?

So I bought my first mac for design/marketing uses (flyers, video etc) and figured I'd consolidate my wife and I's iTunes stuff to it as well...So far most things are done but I have a few snags.
In moving everything over I knew I would end up with a lot of duplicates, we both had a lot of the same music via the CD's we own. The process I did was I connected the external drives from my machine and my wifes machine to the Mac which already had an external blank 200GB drive connected to it and iTunes was setup to use that drive as the music folder location. I then added all the music from the external drives from my machine and wifes machine to iTunes one at a time. I then imported the library playlists etc and changed the path in the files from "M:\itunes music\" to "file://localhost/music" ... This worked, all playlists are back and work.
For handling duplicates on my windows machines in the past I would sort to show duplicates then would go through selecting all duplicates (using ctrl key to select a lot at a time) then delete those in iTunes, it would ask to delete the file and I always had it delete the files because the files themselves were always duplicated (those file being songname1.mp3, songname2.mp3 etc). This worked for the windows machines...not so much for the mac. Apparently the mac didn't duplicate all actual files and instead created duplicate entries based on the same file in a lot of cases.
    Snags:
It looks like the duplicates the mac is showing sometimes are showing multiple entries in iTunes for the same physical file, so If I delete the file, I'm deleting the only copy of the song. Sometimes though there are songname1.mp3, songname2.mp3 etc...This makes it extremely difficult to kill out the duplicates because now I have to look to see what file every duplicate is looking at before deciding to delete file or not...I would be sitting here for weeks on end to do that! I need a better solution.
Second snag that I think is related to the first. My iTunes library is showing 213GB's worth of music being stored on the 200GB drive. I think this is due to the duplicate entries using the same file...The library should be more around 140GB's. I just want to confirm this is indeed the issue or know if there is another place a mac would try to store itunes music if the music folder fills up?

OS Version: Mac OS X 10.9.2 (13C1021)   < from your report

After download and before running do some housekeeping:
Make a Lion installer (this is for flash but I used a small partition on another disk drive to be faster)
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
I recommend installing on another drive, formatted with Lion Installer.
Now would be an excellent time for an SSD. Other than using a 2.5" adapter don't feel there is anything special EXCEPT to install TRIM Enabler.

  • Belkin Bluetooth not working in Mac Pro 2007

    Hi,
I've got a Mac pro 2007 and bought a Belkin Mini Bluetooth adapter via the Apple Store (http://store.apple.com/nl/product/TW622ZM/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY). I was hoping if I bought something from the Apple store It would work.
The mini adapter seems to work, Look at screenshot https://picasaweb.google.com/aseesink/Bluetooth#5598441276491332930 Apologize for the dutch screenprint, but the mark before "Detecteerbaar" can be translated by "detectable".
But if I look at the system preferences I see this: https://picasaweb.google.com/aseesink/Bluetooth#5598441278085536498 Translated it means Bluetooth is disabled. To use bluetooth you need to enable it. But both checks are grey and I cant change anything in this screen.
I did a check (without the belkin mini bluetooth adapter) on my Mac Book and it detects my Nokia telephone.
Using the Belkin mini bluetooth adapter in my Mac Pro it does not pickup any bluetooth signal.
I also tried to do a  PRAM reset in my Mac Pro, but that doesn't change anything.
In the system overview (about this mac) https://picasaweb.google.com/aseesink/Bluetooth#5598442444721135026 it looks like the adapter is working. But from my experience it is not working.
Is there anyone else who got this adapter working? Would love to use my magic mouse with it.
Thank you in advance for helping.

As being a novice with my Mac Pro computer and Cannon 5D mark 3 camera my issue has arisen while over the last year and half, when down loading into my Photoshop Lightroom 4, my 18,000  photograph were not catalogued correctly, or hardly at all, so now over several months time my photos have apparently been redirected in my libraries and have begun not appearing in their allotted frames next to their number in the library they are in. they also have a small question mark (?) next to the photo space. The frames are blank but indicates that there is a photo there. The majority of photos are blank but about a tenth are seen . i apparently need to retrace where they went but do not know how to get that done . can someone help please?

It would be difficult to tell you where to begin. If you moved photos around to different folders and didn't use Lightroom to move them, that would cause Lightroom to lose track of where they are. You have to remember that your images are not "in" Lightroom. Lightroom simply points to them wherever they are on your computer. All of the location information as well as the changes that you make to your images is stored in the catalog, which is a database. This catalog is central to the operation of Lightroom, and it's essential that you understand how it works and how to make it work for you. For all of those images that have "?" On them, or the folders that have the same, you will have to go through the process of locating them and showing Lightroom where they are located. With 18,000 images, and many of them missing, it might just be easier to start a new catalog and organize things properly from the beginning in that catalog.

  • I have a mac pro 2007 model. It appears I have a corrupted sector on my the hadrive tha has my operating system. If I use the install disk that came with is (Tiger) can I still get my lion back.

I have mac pro 2007 model given to me, I updated it to lion about six months ago, and I do not have a time machine.
Lion stopped loading before I get to the login screen,
I tried all the tips, doing a option/shift/v. I noticed several fsk_dsk errors that it could not fix on my boot drive.
Restore would not work either. The only physical copy I have is the install disk that came with the mac. I think it is Tiger.
If I put this operating system on will I be abel to upgrade it to lion, and if so will I have to pay again?

The Lion Recovery Partition has its own index. Your Macintosh HD partition is the one with the troubles.
If Disk Utility cannot fix it, you may need to apply different Utilities, such as Disk Warrior.
Some readers suggest that the best disk repair is to erase the drive and restore it from your Backups.
This might be a good time to consider getting a new drive to have on hand. This would allow you flexibility in copying, fixing, and (if needed) replacing the drive with the problems.

Thanks; however, I was really referring to this: if it is preinstalled on a Mac, I believe the license is for that computer only (unlike an MAS purchased version which can be used on any Mac owned). Has that requirement changed?
At this moment, that's correct. The OS X license included with a Mac can only be used with that Mac. However, in the case the OP has purchased OS X Mountain Lion in the past, this may change
