Mac Pro (2009) crashing about once daily

My Mac Pro from 2009 started to crash daily. Sometimes I can work one day without a crash, but on the next day it’ll freeze. It looks like a hardware issue to me, because the freezes happen in OS X 10.10 and Windows 8.1. In most cases there is no kernel panic log and the events from Console.app right before the crash are random. I didn’t change the underlying hardware, didn’t add or replace a card or something else in the Mac Pro. The crashes started to appear about a month ago. When I manage to get a panic log, it looks similar to this one:

That is the distinctive panic report of an uncorrectable memory error.

machine-check is a Hardware problem. Memory problems often show error code 4 or 5, and are detected by MULTIPLE Processors at once. (a software problem would panic-out ONE Processor, and would not say Machine-check.
The Xeon Processor with Error Correcting Code memory on the Mac Pro stores additional bits with each word in memory, carefully computed so that if the word is read back with one bit wrong, the errant bit can be corrected by Hardware with essentially no slowdown. A background task collects and tabulates the error occurrences, and they can be read back using the STATIC display shown below.
Uncorrectable errors are detected, but most of these cannot be corrected, so your Mac will halt with a kernel panic, machine check detected by multiple processors. This is by design, to avoid poisoning your data.
    About this Mac > ( More Info ) > (Report ) > Memory:

So go about your usual work. From Time-to-Time, re-invoke or Refresh this display. The first modules to show up with errors are BAD, and any filled slots that show as "empty" had errors during the power-on self test, and are also BAD.

  • Nvidia Quadro 4000 is  Freezing / shutting down / Buggy with Mac Pro 2009

I currently have two Nvidia Quadro 4000 mac cards and there causing my Mac Pro 2009 machine to kernel Panic and freeze or shutdown my machine.
I dropped it off at the Apple store for them to diagnose the problem for 9 days and they went ahead and confirmed that it was the card which was causing the problem.
NVIDIA PLEASE UPDATE YOUR DRIVERS FOR THIS CARD FOR MAC.
Its ridicules that if you spend $1200 (apple store) that it will crap out your Mac Pro. I'm waiting for a updated driver in order to test the stability with the Mac Pro
I'm almost 100% sure I did the 10.6.6 update with the stock card, then installed the most updated drivers from Nvidia website and then installed the Cuda Drivers, then finally installing the Video card in the machine. After two days, system was acting up.
Once I get my machine back from Apple tomorrow, I will go ahead and give it one more last try to see if it works. I'm mean the cards are amazing with Adobe Premiere and Media Encoder (super fast), but at the cost that your machine will be very buggy.
Lets wait and see what Apple, Nvidia or PNY will do about the big problem. I'm wanting to keep these babies, so make some moves people and fix the issues for the Professionals.

I hadn't been experiencing the problems you have, but I have been having issues, and yes it absolutely is a case of immature drivers. When the card was released in December, nVidia merely did a simple patch job on the 256.01.00f03 driver that shipped with 10.6.5 rather than include an optimized driver that was comparable to the 259.x driver available on the Windows platform at the time.
Since then, nVidia's engineers have been hard at work doing what appears to be nothing for the Mac. On the Windows side, the Quadro drivers have progressed to 267.11. Rather than provide Apple with updated drivers to include with 10.6.6 or this week's 10.6.7 release, they chose to sit back and wait for the 10.6.7 release and then release their own update.
After 4 months, their best and brightest have brought us <drumroll> driver version 256.01.00f03. To be fair, they changed it from "v5" (the patch job to enable Quadro 4000 compatibility) to "v6". The idea was that it would add compatibility for the Quadro 4000 running under 10.6.7, Sadly for nVidia's Quadro engineers, that driver's installer didn't actually work. It took them nearly a full day to fix that, finally releasing 256.01.00f03v7. As expected, there are no improvements in either performance or stability. In fact, what happened to me is that the new driver actually broke compatibility with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5's Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration feature.
Fortunately, I still had my GTX-285 card available, and this evening I pulled the Quadro and re-installed the older GTX card. I really wish nVidia would care enough to release a solid driver update, I really want to like the Quadro 4000. On paper the potential for video production and OpenGL rendering performance should be huge.

  • Mac Pro 2009 won't boot.

    Hello,
Since yesterday my computer simply refuse to boot (Mac Pro 2009, Quad-Core 2.93 with a flashed Radeon 5870).
It was working fine the day before, I shut it down, unpluged it and when I came back the following day it wasn't working anymore.
When I try to boot it I can hear the fans but not the starting "DONG" it should do.
I tried to replace the graphic card with my old ATI 4870, tried to switch with some old RAM I had and tried to disconnect my hard drives one by one but it did nothing at all.
The only thing I have is this red dignostical LED you can see on this picture. I tried to find it's meaning but I wasn't able to find anything.
It would be nice if someone was able to tell me what this LED meant (and even nicer if it wasn't something expensive to replace !).
    Thanks !

    Hello once again,
So, I finally had time to look a little deeper into this processor board and after removing the heatsink and cleaning the processor I noticed two little plastic screws (the ugly little red arrow on the picture I took from macbidouille.com, not the nice and big one) maintaining another heatsink on the board.
I'm not sure what is the component under this heatsink but one of these screws was broken (they aren't really screws but I don't know how to explain in English) and the heatsink wasn't correctly positioned anymore so I replaced these two screws, put everything back in order (with some thermal grease on the processor and the unknown component) and everything worked like a charm when I was done.
Thanks everyone for your help !

  • Mac Pro 2009-2010 firmware tool

Has anyone tried the Mac Pro 2009-2010 firmware tool hack that is floating around out there? It seems to work with no problems. A cheap way to turn your 2009 quad core into a 2010 hexacore. The price on the Xeon W3680 3.33Ghz Westmere has come down out of the stratosphere into the $500 range. $500 for that kind of speed improvement and the ability to run 1333Mhz RAM seems like a no brainer if one were thinking about upgrading. Have other people tried this?

This is not the place and no I have not heard, if there is/was it would be talked about on MacRumors, netkas or others. And I don't think it would be just firmware update. OWC Turnkey program involves more than just firmware change.
The W33680 was $590 but has gone up (popularity and supply/demand) to $620. Not $500 (though if you sell your cpu later then the out of pocket might be more like $400).

  • Mac Pro 2009 - Kenel panic problem, any ideas?

My Mac Pro 2009 is nearly 3 years old, haven't had any problems with it but in the last day i've had a crash and a kernel panic. 1st time a grey box came down over a quarter of the screen and the machine froze and I had to hold th power button to restart.
2nd time I had a kernel panic with the following error, I haven't added any new hardware for months. The kernel panic I got is as follows:

  • HELP! Upgrading Graphics Card on Mac Pro 2009

    Hi all,
I'm interested in upgrading my current graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB to something with more memory.
I'm having a hard time trying to figure out which brand to go with that'll be compatible with my Mac Pro 2009 model and will work well under OSX Mavericks.
I really dont want to break the bank. Need a good amount of GDDR5 ram for Adobe Creative Cloud mostly. Would also like to run some gaming on PC Bootcamp drive under Windows 7 (Titanfall, Crysis, Battlefield, etc). However that's all secondary, thanks for your help.

LOTS of choices, depends if you want ones that will work without fuss (ATI 5770 & 5870 plus Mac edition EVGA 680 and Sapphire 7950) still give you boot screens if you option boot.
If you don't care about boot screens, you can use almost any recent ATI or Nvidia card. If you only boot into OSX, you can live without boot screens.

  • HT2090 External iSight camera video feed working fine but mic is not working Mac Pro 2009 and Mountain Lion 10.8.4

Finally I decided to move forward and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.4 (with all the updates). Now I am facing a dilemma, my external iSight Camera  is working fine regarding the video fee but the Mic is useless. I am using a Mac Pro 2009 and a Apple Cinema Display 30". I checked all the trends about iSight External devices but no one has a really specific solution for my problem. Firewire is not longer supported with Mountain Lion? By the way my iSight was working perfectly before. So I am wondering if something wrong happened with the OS and the support for this kind of device?   I reset the PRAM, the SMC, even I reinstalled the MAC OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4) from scratch. So I am wondering if the problem is that ML is not longer supporting this device or what is the issue here.
Hope someone can help me with it!
    Thanks

Not true.  External iSight works fine with my '09 Mac Pro and 10.8.4.
Jalcom wrote:... So I am wondering if something wrong happened ...
    So it must have.
Jalcom wrote: ... help me with it!...
You have tried several good things, but there may be other suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 that you have not yet considered.  Be sure to check more than one Apple app in more than one user account to help you pinpoint the cause of your trouble.  Then you will know what to fix.
In addition to the Apple troubleshooting, check your  > System Preferences... > Sound > Input to verify that your iSight's mic is selected, not muted, and that its volume setting is properly adjusted.  You may need to check this again after restarting Mac or changing apps that use the mic.
Also, be certain that the apps you are testing are configured to use iSight's mic.  Different apps select the mic in different ways.  For example, QuickTime X allow selection among various microphone alternatives via one of its preferences as shown in the image below:
(I was using my Display microphone and did not have my external iSight connected when I made this image.  Therefore, there is no iSight mic shown in my list of mic choices above.  If your iSight's mic is properly connected, turned on, and recognized by your Mac, iSight will show in your QTX microphone preference choice list.)
If you are trying to use your iSight with a Flash based web site, also check your Mac's  > System Preferences... > Flash Player > Camera and Mic settings to verify that your Flash system preferences are not blocking your mic.
Some other apps may offer mic and or camera selection via their application menus.  If you have trouble finding out how to select the iSight internal mic in other apps, check each apps' Help or post back the name of the app whose selector you cannot locate here so we can try to help.

  • How many Sapphire Sapphire RADEON R9 270X can i install in my mac pro 2009?

How many of the graphics cards can I install in my mac pro 2009? Sapphire Sapphire RADEON R9 270X
    Thanks

Why? do you use FCP-X? that will benefit from two. Also gaming in Windows where you can use Crossfire
You have two 6-pin power feeds so you will need a small 450W PSU - those come with two 8-pin and two 6-pin.
Those can often fit in the optical drive bay and cost $25-75 range.
"500W" is NOT for the card! that is the minimum PC PSU only!
when buying look for card that uses only two 6-pin and not an 8-pin power.
75W for the PCIe slot, and 150W from two 6-pin cables, most GPUs fall into the 200-250W at maximum stress levels8-pin is basically two 6-pins and 150W feed
    > we CrossFired a pair of Radeon R9 270s in our 2010 Mac Pro tower. Under Windows 7 64bit Ultimate, it registered 145 FPS in the Diablo test.
    http://barefeats.com/tube06.html
Keep in mind that the Mac Pro tower can't feed enough power to the dual 980s, dual 290Xs, or dual 7950s.
We used an auxillary power supply to compensate.
For the hard core GPU rendering, there are external expansion boxes with their own power supplies.
In an earlier article, we featured the Cubix Xpander which facilitated the connection of 5 GPUs to the Mac Pro tower.
If you favor an AMD GPU like the Radeon R9 290X, MacVidCards can modify it to run at PCIe 2.0 bandwidth in your Mac Pro tower.
The Sapphire Radeon R9 7950 Mac Edition is available from OWC and TransIntl.

December 28th, 2013 -- Does Final Cut Pro X 10.1 render faster on Mac Pro towers with Dual AMD GPUs? What about Motion 5.1?
    Things to keep in mind:
The Radeon R9 280X we used was 'un-flashed.' It booted OS X fine but there was no startup screen. Also, when we checked the speed of CPU-to-PCIe-to-CPU communication, it appeared to be running in PCIe 1.0 mode instead of PCIe 2.0. However, unless the GPU intensive app saturates the PCIe 1.0 bandwidth, it will not run any faster in PCIe 2.0 mode. http://barefeats.com/tube12.html
Which is one reason why you might want to buy pre-modified cards from http://www.macvidcards.com

  • New mac pro, CS5 crashes, where to start?

I have a new mac pro which crashes daily while using After Effects (and photoshop). I've seen some indication that this could be a driver issue with the 2 nvidia cards that came preinstalled, or an Adobe issue. Running 10.6.4 Snow Leopard. I can recreate this sometimes by scrubbing the after effects timeline with a spotlight casting a shadow on another layer. The system locks up, left monitor flashes black and I have to hard rest. This is super frustrating, apple has twice told me it's Adobe, but I don't know. All I do know as a business owner is that I'm $13,000 invested in hardware / software that don't seem to work together and I don't have many other options as this is what i do for living. Any thoughts at all? Anyone have any ideas?

For sure it is really frustrating, especially when you convinced the company you work with to switch from FCP to CS5...
I have the same problem with a Mac Pro bought in April and a GTX 280... We were pretty happy with Premiere Pro, when editing a feature shot on RED 4K HD. It is the more stable release of that soft I ever seen, and I'm using it since Premiere 5.1 and the mini-DV.
But I'm disappointed by After Effect, which use to be alway stable in the previous version I used. We're working on a 3300$ computer, using a 450$ graphic card, and the two Samsung monitors keep flashing before AFX craches... That happen every 15 minutes.
The GeForce driven is updated. We have also a Geforce GT 120 in the Mac Pro, to plug a Wacom Cintiq 12WX on it... The screen of the wacom doesn't flash when it happens to the Samsungs, that's why I'm thinking of an issue involving the GTX 280. Anyway, nVidia does not provide any driver for Mac for the GT 120...
So it's probably more a graphic card issue, than a software one... But if someone has any other idea to get rid of this problem (unactivate open GL does not change the problem)... ?
Thanks in advance for who may help...

  • HD 7970 video card for Mac Pro 2009

I just wanna buy one HD 7970 3GB for my 2009 MAC PRO. Do you guys flash the card or does 10.9.2 natively support HD 7970 diver? I've been looked at some HD 7970 cards on ebay, just confused with the power  cables, some has one 6 to 6 pin and 6 to 8 pin cables. Others has two 6 to 6 pin cables. I don't know which one to buy is safe.
    Here is the link:

yes-i agree with what kaz-k has written.  As long as you get the correct power cables for your graphics card you should be okay. I think the Mac Pro has 2 6pin sockets. We don't flash the card ( thought I'm assuming it could be done elsewhere) , and Apple doesn't support  anything other than a few graphics cards anyways, and it doesn't really read what's been posted here. here's the takeway: The card will probably work, however, due to the lack of a Mac EFI (basically a boot rom), you won't see a startup screen should you choose to install the card into your mac pro 2009.  As the OS gets going you will see graphics. Should you need to do basic troubleshooting, eg choosing which drive to start up from
(command R on startup, I believe), the lack of a boot screen could be troublesome. If you don't care about that, by all means go ahead. 10.9.2 should have support for this card.  If it helps, I bought a Sapphire 7950 for my Mac Pro 2008 (3,1) and although it doesn't run at quite full speed, it was a breeze to install, and it beat the 8800GT which was in that slot
    good luck

  • Mac Pro 2008 8 core 2.8 GHz versus Mac Pro 2009 8 core 2.26 GHz

I'm trying to decide if its worth selling my current MP 2008 with 8 core 2.8GHz 16Gig machine to get
a Mac Pro 2009 with 8 core 2.26 GHz 8 Gig systems. I have a chance to buy a 2009 MP that has 2 years left
on AppleCare but would still need another 8 gigs of RAM. My 2008 MP does what I want as a developer (I don't use it for
graphics) but warranty expires in 7 months. Based on reviews, discussions, etc. They both are about the same in speed but
I like that the 2009 is newer and with more warranty however my 2008 is a real workhorse, has NEVER let me down and
the thought of going to another system and reinstalling everything does not motivate me. As for price, I might get the same
money for my 2008 MP as it would cost me to get the 2009 MP. So the question is, is the 2009 a "better system" to get
or is the 2008 MP more stable? I hear that Hyper-Threading on the Nahelam's are not all that they are craked up to be so if I had
to switch OFF HT then I would actually loose speed on the 2009 even if it uses DD3 RAM a better bus etc..
    Your thoughts?
    Thanks.

  • Pro Caddy 2 (Mac Pro 2009)

    Hi!
Has anybody installed this item in a 2009 Mac Pro?:
    http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?category=2791
If so, is the "Easy Installation" description under the "Feature" heading true?
And does having 2 bootable 2.5" SSDs in the caddy have any effect, or impose any limitations, upon the functionality and/or use of the original Superdrive in anyway?
    Many thanks in anticipation,
    Regards,
    Bill

    Hello Grant,
Yes, I know that my Mac pro has six SATA connectors inside, also where they are situated, and at the moment I already have a single SSD installed in the lower optical bay.
And, yes, I had already read the ad very carefully, and the option I am contemplating is the "Pro Caddy2 2009 for 2.5" SSD/HDD Kit with bootable PCIe card:$139.00".
The reason that I have asked my questions is that, from feedback about other products, with bootable PCIe cards, which I have previously considered, having two bootable SSDs in the lower optical drive bay
might result in changes to the functionality of the original Superdrive in the higher optical drive bay. See: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12408903#12408903
Also, one particular manufacturer's product for this purpose does not look very easy to install, and that is why I was hoping that somebody might have already purchased this product, and would be able to advise me whether or not the "Easy Installation" claim for the Pro Caddy 2 (Mac Pro 2009) is in fact a valid one.
Somebody who has already installed the Mac Pro Caddy 2 (Mac Pro 2009), with two SSDs, would also know whether or not the functionality of the original Superdrive had been affected.
So, please, is there anybody out there who has installed the Pro Caddy 2 in a 2009 Mac Pro?
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Will Remote Desktop allow me to access and use my Mac Pro 2009 from my MacBook Pro 2011?

Own a small business, have two locations, I need to use Windows via Parallels on my Mac Pro 2009, but I am forced to spend most of my time at the other location which has a MacBook Pro 2011. Will Remote Desktop allow me to use the MacBook Pro 2011 to access the Mac Pro and use Windows via Parallels?

If all you need is to be able to control another computer, then ARD would be overkill. If the systems have Mac OS X 10.5 or later you can use the Screen Sharing built into those versions of Mac OS X to control the system.
Another and perhaps easier option is to use a service such as LogMeIn or TeamViewer. Either option may be significantly easier than dealing with screen sharing or ARD.
You'll want to confirm that any solution you choose will work with Parallels, of course. I haven't tried remote control of a system to use Parallals, so there may be special considerations there. If you don't get useful comments here, you might try Parallels' forums.
    Regards.

The panic was caused by the MAXPower device or its software, maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed.
First check the manufacturer's website for an update. If there is none, or if it doesn't help, I suggest you remove the device, back up all data, and then remove the software according to the manufacturer's instructions. Reboot and see whether there's an improvement. If there isn't, post another panic report.
