Mac Pro Doppelgänger Mac-Pro

I recently networked my Mac Pro with a PC DellMT530 and an Apple PowerBookG4. The network works well but (1) when viewed from the PowerG4, two networked locations appear: Mac Pro and Mac-Pro; (2) when I click on About Mac and More Info, in the gray strip at the top of the page appear the words Mac-Pro but on the next line, top left, appear the words Mac Pro (without the hyphen) (3) in my Finder, when on my Mac Pro, under Shared, I see my PowerG4, my Dell and Mac-Pro. When I click on Mac-Pro here, the result is: "Connection failed" which is understandable since Mac-Pro should not exist. I run OSX 10.5.4 on the Mac Pro and OSSC 10.4.11 on the PowerG4.
Question: how do I fix this problem, so Mac-Pro disappears ?

Actually I discovered that it is normal for the Mac Pro to insert a hyphen when the name you have given to your machine contains a space. The system then designates name-name.local as the name of the server. That explains why in System Profiler, at the top of the Page, the name Mac-Pro appears and on the next line, on the left, the name Mac Pro appears. This seemed a bit silly to me, so I changed the name of the computer to MacPro and automatically the apparent inconsistency in the server name disappeared.
Nonetheless, this does not explain why, on my PowerBookG4, when fired up in the morning and clicking on Finder, then Network, I see MacPro and Mac Pro. Of course, if I click on Mac Pro, a message appears telling me the connection failed, which is not surprising since there exists in fact no computer of mine named Mac Pro. No amount of dragging will get rid of the Mac Pro from Finder. In Get Info, I am told I have no access and that the "Owner" is "System". Everything is kinda grayed out, even the small padlock. On some days, after a few hours, Mac Pro disappears from Finder, only to reappear the next morning. If anyone can explain this, it would set my mind at peace...

    Filevault
    Problem
FileVault process interrupted. Doesn't work anymore systemwide. Returns in console in up-to-date OSX 10.4.8
    loginwindow[5924]: SecFileVaultCreate returned -25300
    Description
I can't activate FileVault anymore from any account.
I ran FileVault once with the Erase secure option on my admin account. It took more than 5 hours for a 20 GB home folder starting at 10 p.m.
So around 4 a.m. I decided to cancel the process, when, I think, it was secure erasing.
Everything worked fine after breaking it. I only found two folders in the Users folder, which pointed to the one I was securing (I don't remember their names).
I took my MBP to the technical assistance for display replacement and told a technician about this, who promptly erase them.
Since then I don't get FileVault to work again, the encryption being stopped by an error message with the console counterpart above mentioned.
Also I get two Desktop icons on the left column when I save or open a file from any application except in (main) Finder. Similar doppelgänger happens also when right-clicking on some objects, returning doubled apps.
The only major changes since erasing those files were making archive and install (with no results) and HD defrag with iDefrag (on-line defrag without unmounting it).
    Apple assistance, etc.
A propos, I phoned the Apple Care assistance from Milan and after one hour and € 40 cel phone, they couldn't help either.
(And I don't want to know about the guy that erased those files and replace the display...and the battery without notice, changing it for a defective one).
    Any ideas?
Should I take a look at hidden image files to delete?
MBP Core 2 Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8)
MBP Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I got the following message as per the situation described on this thread
    An error occurred.
An error occurred during encryption (Could not create FileVault disk image). FileVault will be turned off for this home folder and the home folder will not be encrypted.
    system.log specified SecFileVaultCreate returned -25300.
On Apple's Technical Note TN2029 (http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn2029.html) it says
The error -25300 was being returned from high level Keychain calls when no keychains existed. Now, a user interface is presented to create a keychain instead (r. 2701995).
After turning FileVault off, I've deleted the FileVault Master Password Key (private key) and FileVault Recovery Key (certificate) along with the FileVault Keychain from the Keychain app.
But the files still exist under /Library/Keychains and someway FileVault recalls them for turning itself on again.
You got to trash them and type an admin password when requested to perform the task.
Otherwise you can open the Terminal and do
    cd /Library/Keychains
    sudo rm FileVaultMaster.keychain
[type the admin password when requested]
    rm FileVaultMaster.cer
If you've set a password hint for the master password, you can delete it by entering in the Terminal
    sudo defaults delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow MasterPasswordHint
This also requires an administrator password.
After that, you can reset the Master Password and try to turn FileVault on again in a new test account ad hoc.

  • Replace special characters

    Hi,
I want to rename files containg special characters in a directory tree.
    For example I want
    06\ --\ Doppelgänger.flac
    renamed to
    06\ --\ Doppelganger.flac
I have found a python script that seems to be able to do it here.
I have also found a list of replacements characters
    my $AccentedChars = '€–‚ƒ„…†‡ˆ‰Š‹Œ–Ž––''""•–—˜™š›œ–žŸ'.
    '–¡¢£¤¥¦§¨©ª«¬-®¯°±²³´µ¶·¸¹º»¼½¾¿'.
    'ÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖ×ØÙÚÛÜÝÞß'.
    'àáâãäåæçèéêëìíîïðñòóôõö÷øùúûüýþÿ';
    my $NonAccenChars = 'E-,f,.++^%S_O-Z--````.--~Ts_o-zY'.
    '-!cLoYlS`Ca_--R-`+23`uP.,10_qh3_'.
    'AAAAAAACEEEEIIIIDNOOOOOxOUUUUYTS'.
    'aaaaaaaceeeeiiiidnooooo%ouuuuyty';
from this perl script (which throws an error when used. Otherwise it would be perfect).
So, can somebody tell me how I could feed the python script with the above replacement table?
I have tried but I can't seem to get it to work.
I have also tried to make a simple bash-script using rename but I could not that to work either.
I would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Rasmus

I didn't try the perl script, but sed's y command will do exactly this. tr complains about a dash
    accent='€–‚ƒ„…†‡ˆ‰Š‹Œ–Ž––''""•–—˜™š›œ–žŸ–¡¢£¤¥¦§¨©ª«¬-®¯°±²³´µ¶·¸¹º»¼½¾¿ÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖ×ØÙÚÛÜÝÞßàáâãäåæçèéêëìíîïðñòóôõö÷øùúûüýþÿ'
    nonaccent='E-,f,.++^%S_O-Z--````.--~Ts_o-zY-!cLoYlS`Ca_--R-`+23`uP.,10_qh3_AAAAAAACEEEEIIIIDNOOOOOxOUUUUYTSaaaaaaaceeeeiiiidnooooo%ouuuuyty'
    echo '06\ --\ Doppelgänger.flac' | sed "y/$accent/$nonaccent/"
So you could do something like
    for file in *; do
    mv -v -i -- "$file" "$(echo "$file" | sed "y/$accent/$nonaccent/")"
    done

  • Safari windows get stuck until Exposé

    Hi
Every now and again, I am surfing around in Safari, and suddenly I can't click the close, minimise and zoom buttons, and the window won't move around. I can still use the content of the page perfectly well though. If I press any of the Exposé keys, it comes into the organiser-expose-thing from the edge of the screen, with just a bit poking out. When I deactivate Expose, it goes back to the edge of the screen, and the stuck window is gone. I can now drag the window perfectly.
It seems like it is making an doppelgänger of itself and then hiding away, but I would like to how to stop it happening, and, if possible, why it happens at all.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mac Pro shoot down after few seconds

  • Install Windows 8.1 Pro on Mac Mini Late 2014

I'm trying to install Bootcamp on my Mac Mini.  Windows reports that it cannot install or create a partition on the drive after formatting the BOOTCAMP partition as NTFS.
    This is my setup:
    1. Mac Mini Late 2014 with 2TB Fusion Drive.
    2. Windows 8.1 Pro x64 full version ISO downloaded from Microsoft Store.
    3. Sandisk Extreme Flash Drive (I have tried both 16GB and 64GB).
    4. Bootcamp partition = 500GB.
    5. Other USB devices plugged in: Corded USB Mouse and Apple Extended Keyboard (both of which are required to enter the serial number and navigate the installer window).
    6. No additional storage devices of any kind are connected aside from the internal Fusion drive and the installer drive.
    7. Booting from the EFI portion of the Bootcamp created Windows installer.
I have read that I should try using a USB 2 flash drive rather than a USB 3 flash drive, so I will try that next.  I fail to understand how this could make any difference.
If you have any other tips, please let me know.
I have installed or helped other people install bootcamp many times over the course of the past 2 years.  Every single time it has caused endless headaches and literally weeks of wasted time.
I have read endless posts on what is causing these problems.  I will consider summarising these for anyone else having the same problems.  Everyone has their theory so far about this Bootcamp nightmare, but so far there doesn't appear to be any one magic solution.
Apple's inability to address the issue suggests that the problem may be with the Windows installer.  Perhaps Microsoft is deliberately causing this?
I suspect the two most likely causes of these issues are the downloaded ISO or the Thumb Drive.
If you have any better idea, please let me know.
On another topic, how to I rename the NTFS partition back to BOOTCAMP?  All options to rename this partition are greyed out in Disk Utility...
    Cheers,
    Paul

The FAT32/NTFS partition is usually not adequate for an EFI install. You can delete the BCA-created partition and create a Disk Utility partition which is formatted as Free Space. This will be split into an MSR and MSD. Fusion drives create problems, especially if the BC partition lies outside the traditional MBR 2TB boundary.
Before you delete the BCA-created partition, please post the output of
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

Windows installers up to W8.1 do not have USB3 drivers. These are installed after Windows is installed and BC drivers are in place.

The requirements are pretty strict when installing Windows. Any deviations cause headaches and grief.

The USB is usually the issue.

After Windows is fully installed and BC drivers are in place, log into Windows, right click on it and rename it on the Windows side. It cannot be renamed on the OSX side with diskutil renameVolume. Here is an example sequence. You cannot rename volume during the installation process.

  • Cannot send email from 3 accounts Mac Pro

My brand new Mac Pro cannot send email using Gmail, Shaw, or iCloud.  At times I can send a simple test message, other times I cannot send.  It seems the more data in the email, it for sure cannot be sent.  The sent messages get stuck in the Out Box.  Full green lights, no red lights in the connection diagnostics window.  Any help in this regard will be much appreciated.

thank you for your reply, I did this with the same problem.  Turns out that I went to FAQ section and went to the "Sharing" section of "system preferences"  and changed my computer name by removing all spaces and apostrophe where it lists my computer name under Mac Book Pro, and problem solved.

  • Using a serial Wacom tablet on a Mac Pro

I have a good Wacom tablet with serial port interface that I would like to connect to a Mac Pro.
Is there some way to do this? Is there any sort of serial to usb adapter or would that not work with a Mac Pro?
    Thanks for any advice.

  • Mixing Memory Mac Pro 2.66 Xenon

    Hello all!
Alright I am trying to figure the best configuration that I can afford for a memory upgrade to my Mac Pro. I am looking to spend somewhere south of $200.
I currently have the following memory configuration (3GB):
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1: 512 MB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2: 512 MB
I wanted to expand it quite a bit more and see on NewEgg that they are charging appx 65.00 for (2 x 1GB) and 80.00 for (2 x 2GB). It's definitely a better price per GB to get the 2 x 2GB but would I see a large performance increase?
I have been reading on the message boards that it is best not to mix memory but it is suggested to fill all the slots with the same size memory.
I guess it just kills me to take out all of my existing memory to put in just the 4GB of new memory.
    Could anyone provide any suggestions?
Thank you for your time in advance!

You have 3GB, which is on the lite side.
The ideal for that model is 4 DIMMs.
Without knowing if you are a light photoshop, or what you use it for, Apple calls 4 x 1GB for FCP (and audio apps) "symmetrical memory."
And I would look at 4 x 2GB and pull your 3GB, maybe sell it once you know the new memory is fine after a month.
Are you seeing page outs? multiple swap files?
    Go to folder: /var/
Maybe you are better off with faster drives, new boot drive or for scratch. A WD 10K 150GB VelociRaptor for $180 even.

  • I got a new macbook pro and am having a great deal of trouble with it from the start!  But other than that, which I will get to, I have had macs since the one following Lisa and I am a diehard apple fan, yet now with the macbook pro and Lion and its

I could not download the upgrade to the mountain lion. my updates were taking an enormous amount of time for other programs. When I finally got the indication it was waiting to be downloaded I had to shut down. It was after 2 am and I was practically unconscious already with all the trauma of trying to find the right place for the redeem of the code to open the password. It was all confusing and poorly communicated by Apple. The terrible deterioration of Apple's written communications by non-American techies who can't write for easy understanding, even by this old time tech afficianado is heart-breaking and frustrating is putting the effects mildly.  I have not yet gone back to the mac book pro to finish the job. I am too frustrated and unhappy with the new system.  Also, I found out the hard way that my time capsule saved files on the macbook Snow Leopard, which still works fine after 6 years of use, is locked in that external drive and I cannot transfer the items except one by one or by folders on that computer to a DVD or to a flash drive, to mport to this new computer. Because the systems are not the same, I can't access the files automatically. I fear I will have further problems with the mountain lion vs. lion in seeing those files. What can I do? What should I do?  I am afraid to designate an external hard drive I purchased with the new laptop for the time capsule because then it won't work with any other computer.  I read of terrible incompatibility issues and crashes and things not working right once Mountain Lion was installed and now I am terrified they will happen to me. I just wanted the computer to be as easy to use as all the other macs I have and have had and now it is more like a horribly complicated and difficult Microsoft IBM compatible PC. I hate this. Perhaps Apple wanted to appeal to new Apple users and tried to make them comfortable while disregarding the comfort of loyal Apple users?  It's a sell-out. Meanwhile, I have to get senior tech people because the kids who try to answer my questions much of the time don't interpret what i am telling them and it takes a pro.  Perhaps the kids can answer what I should do in preferenced to scroll the screen, since the scroll indicators disappear and I can't see them and have to resort to using the arrows on the keyboard, which is not the way I like to work.    Please advise me about all of these things!

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!

Hi, I run a Mac Pro 2008 oct core system. The specs are as follows:
    dual 2.8GHz quad core processors
Snow Leopard with all software updates
16GB RAM DDR2 (Pre-DDR3 mac) (apple certified RAM, so won't break my warranty)
Hard drives are set in two raid arrays, there are four 1.5 TB drives, each set to pairs of raid 0 for 3 TB drives. One raid array is set to time machine the other is my startup disc.
    dual DVD RW drives
N-Videa 8800GT graphics card (Shipped with my mac)
using a DVI to HDMI adapter to connect to a 40" Samsung LCD TV as a monitor (has always worked flawlessly)
I have upgraded a lot of the parts myself and have a fair amount of knowledge of how to do my own upgrades. My system today crashed on me after waking from sleep mode and attempting to use the web. Now when I try rebooting it gives me a screen that is even lines of black and white, nothing else. I do get the Apple beep noise like normal so my assumption is it isn't going to be the memory. I have cleaned off, reseated, and tried different slots with my graphics card, and both DVI ports, same effect. I am pretty sure this is the graphics card demanding to be replaced, which I have considdered upgrading anyway in the past. Most of my computer activities involve watching HD quality movies and TV shows and playing games with high graphic requirements at maximum settings, so using a top of the line graphics card is to be expected.
What I am posting here for is just getting a confirmation that other people agree with me that this is the problem so I do not waste my money on a new graphics card. Please let me know opinions, I would like to have my computer running swimmingly in the near future. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help I can get.

Most people often seem to think that after a system freeze they don't need to repair their boot drive.
Over the years, Disk Warrior stands out as indispensable.
ie, don't rely on the restart alone to repair and fix, and you probably don't want to trust and rely on just Apple First Aid.
Boot from another drive and run Apple First Aid followed by Disk Warrior; keep backups of your system you can boot from. Clone your system with SuperDuper. Clear out system caches.
You don't need to buy Apple RAM and its prices to have certified RAM, Crucial and others are fine. Sometimes even better.
I like a fsst, small, boot drive and keep it just to OS/Apps; everything else, media files, data, whatever, on other drives. Multiple backups and redundancy. TimeMachine doesn't benefit or perform any faster with RAID, I've tried just to see.
I would slice off some space for an emergency boot drive so you can OPTION boot to that and run First Aid and other maintenance.
Then worry about hardware, and maybe run some hardware tests.
And for a good "is it software or hardware" do a clearn install of Apple OS and updates (only) - needs less than 30GB.

  • Can't Get MacBook Pro and Mac Pro to Network

I have a MacBook Pro (2008 - 2.5 Ghz. Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) that I have been connecting to my Mac Pro (2005 - 2 2.66 Ghz Xeon with 20 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) through an Ethernet switch on my school's network. This has worked without a hitch for years, but when I upgraded to 10.6.7 recently, the MacBook and Mac Pro fail to network. On the MacBook Pro, the Mac Pro's icon doesn't show in the shared area, and on the Mac Pro, I can see the icon for the MacBook Pro, but when I click on the icon to connect, I get the message that "Connection Failed There was an error connecting to the server (name of my MacBook Pro). Check the server name or IP address, and then try again." I have tried a direct connect using the "Connect to Server" under the Go menu on both machines, using their IP addresses, but no luck. Is there something I need to re-set to get these two to talk again? I have other Macs on the same network that my MacBook and my Mac Pro can see, and both machines can connect to them. They just can't connect to each other.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have on  how to fix this.

I fixed the problem by re-setting the default values for my VirusBarrier X6 anti-virus program.

  • How to take a picture with my mac bok pro???

Years ago I took pictures and selfies with my MacBook Pro. After spending a lot of time only using my phone to take pics I'm only trying now to take one simple pic of my dog on the other side of my computer screen tonight. Now I can't seem to find out how to do this. The i-Photo at the bottom of the screen only shows me old photos and asks for locations. No. I try to look for help on my Mac to no avail. THE REST OF MY MICROSOFT FRIENDLY FAMILY ARE AMUSED. The 'support' is horrible, I find out through YAHOO - not Apple or my computer - that I need to go through Photo Booth. I remember seeing that years ago. Why is there no photo booth icon at the bottom of my screen??? When did it change to i-Photo, and why aren't the two integrated?? Why do I have to find answers through yahoo? I managed to get photo booth up for a while on my mac book, but seriously, I can't be doing this all the time, now it's gone again and still I have no pic of my dog hating the back of my screen. And I can't find it again! The question is still: How do I take a photo with my mac book? Please DO NOT refer me to a link. NOT LOOKING FOR AN AUTOMATED ANSWER. Also, some additional feedback, Siri is really inferior compared to OK Google in providing directions, answering general questions (understanding voice questions and providing answers) and making voice command calls. I will not be buying an Apple watch for now. I need to see a lot of other improvements, even only how to ask questions about existing products and features and get snappy answers, before I invest in a new Apple product. Disappointed, I always rooted for Apple.

    Feel all better now?
    1. The Photo Booth.app is located in the Applications directory of Macintosh HD on Mac OS X systems. But some Microsoft Friendly Family conspirator might have changed the name of the internal storage device, removed the Photo Booth.app icon from the Dock, or possibly deleted the app.
    2. Photo Booth.app never DID change to iPhoto.app, or Photos.app. It always was and still is Photo Booth.app.
    3. iPhoto and Photos (introduced in Yosemite 10.10.3) are separate programs primarily designed for organizing and editing digital photos, and cannot take selfies.
Once you 'snap' an image with Photo Booth, the images are displayed in the 'film roll' that appears at the bottom of the Photo Booth application after you snap the first image. Clicking on an image in that film roll will select it. Control+clicking offers the option to export or delete the image. Once an image is selected with a single click, click the "upload" icon beneath the film roll to see the options available.
(Yosemite 10.10.2 version illustrated below. Screen transparency means that the background image colors bleed through the menus illustrated below.)
    4. There is a fast way to find and start the application called Photo Booth.app.
Click on the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner of your computer screen to search your computer for Photo Booth.app. Yes, there is a space between the words Photo and Booth. Press the enter/return key to open the application which will also enable the user-facing camera and illuminate a green LED.
Click the red button to initiate a 3-step countdown and a simulated flash of the screen to provide more light.
    5. Once Photo Booth.app is open and running, 'right click' (if the Secondary click feature of your mouse or trackpad has been enabled in , System Preferences) on the Photo Booth program icon in the bottom 'Dock' of your screen, and select Options, Keep In Dock. That will keep the Photo Booth icon in the bottom program dock for fast future use.
