::MacBook 2,1 OVERHEATS when idle::

Hi everyone.
My arising concern led me to write this up regarding heat issues with my MacBook.
Since my 2nd day of owning it, in January 2007, I installed BootCamp Beta that corrupted approximately 20GB. THinking it'd be no concern to me, I've lived with that until today when Parallels doesnt always function properly.
Today my friend recommended me to use smcFanControl to see my heat and fan settings, and alarmly varied 80-85 degrees CELCIUS with my fan going constantly over 6100rpm. I only have firefox, mail, adium (a messenger-type thing) and msn.
THe bottom of my MacBook is immensely hot and the fan blows out hot air like my heater.
Putting it over my tower fan at full blast will bring it down by up to 5 degrees however it is still very hot and the fan is loud and fast.
Previously this heat and fan speed only happened when performing extremely heavy tasks on both OSX as well as my virtualPC running windows XP.
When I open photoshop and go into Preferences, it lets me allow photoshop to use up to 1.6GB of my 'remaining' ram, meaning that not much of my ram is being used.
To make sure there isn't any hardware failure I inserted my grey installation disc and performed the hardware test. It came out perfectly clean.
Currently I'm looking for a resolution and have boiled it down to a few possibilities:
Processor capabilities (Simply weared down after 2 years of moderately-hard usage) It's not replaceable right?
T7200 2.0GhZ, 4mb cache 667MhZ bus
RAM performance
People say I have to boot 200 times for it to function at its best and usually I only put it to sleep overnight and when not used during the day. However I think this has deteriorated when I booted.
2GB from Apple, 667MhZ DDR2
Graphics Performance
Don't know how to relate this to a problem when no graphical-type apps are open however it does show its weakness when games or video-editing apps (such as imovie and final cut pro) are running.
It's a 64mb Intel GMA 950. However Disc Utility and Hardware Test mysteirously detects it as a 256mb. =/
Hard Drive Performance
It's the standard (and pathetic) Hitachi 5400rpm 16mb 1.5GBps 80GB
It might be the fact I'm running out of space (14GB remaining)
Or the slow speed (5400rpm) that no one else seems to be complaining about
Or the fact it's Hitachi.
I really don't know.
Fan Malfunction
Occasionally I perform very heavy tasks on my MacBook such as running various iLife iWork and CS3/4 apps simultaneously. I'm not sure if extended use of these apps have simply caused the Fan to go conkers.
Or if there's something wrong with the fan because of my traveling with it (And running around town in the rain and jumping down mass flights of stairs) However Apple Hardware Test didn't say anything.
OS
Everyone says Leopard runs better and takes up less space.
So is it worthwhile upgrading (Eitherb uying it, stealing it from friends.. etc etc)
I've got 10.4.11 - no one else seems to be complaining
So what do you think?
Thish appens both running off AC and battery. It heats up like a uhm... a monkey on a stove.
I didn't get extended AppleCare and the only qualified apple technician I know is overseas for the next few months and didn't leave me with his contact while he's there.

Did a quick google search--kinda tired right now, not sure how much more info can be found.
According to this thread (it's a bit old):
http://www.codeweavers.com/support/tickets/browse/?ticketid=308635;ssubject
the wineloader process will stick around if one of your Windows programs crashed while exiting the program. It's fine to use Activity Monitor to kill it.
If you've got the time, it may be worthwhile to try targeting the Windows program that crashes while exiting. The way I'd do that would be to run one program, then quit CrossOver and watch Activity Monitor for wineloader. Of course, this may not happen every time you use Crossover.
pmtool is part of Activity Monitor so once Activity Monitor is closed that process will stop. Oh, and here's a helpful hint. If you're not sure what a process is or what program "owns" it, highlight it and click "Inspect."
Kernel_task is a system process so you shouldn't force it to stop. Is it gobbling up your RAM/CPU?
One last note: Firefox can be a bit of a CPU hog, but only if you don't have another program running which needs the power. It will use less if you launch a program that needs it.

P.S. Thanks for the star

  • MacBook Air shuts down when idle or sleep, while on batt or power.  Brand new, bought July 2012!

After allowing an upgrade to Lion and installing Verizon card - book shuts down every time goes to sleep.  This is a brand new air!  What can I do to find a fix?

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 drops Wi-Fi connection when idle/asleep.

My MacBook Pro OSX 10.6 has begun to lose Wi-Fi connection when idle. I can't re-connect unless I shut down computer and re-start. Worse, the system appears to lock up--I can't force quit, must press the power button to shut down. This problem occurs wherever I am using my laptop, not just with one particular Wi-Fi network.

I have been having the same issue for the last two weeks. No real indication as to why it ever began other than I had turned off my router and Airport Extreme Base Station off for a weekend while I was away from my place.
iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, all have no issues at all with my Airport Extreme Base Station. Can stay connected throughout my living room, bathroom, bedroom, no issues whatsoever.
My 5 month old MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7 Airport is sometimes perfect, able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue. Then, for no reason, I won't be able to join my wireless network, or when I can join, I can't pick up an IP address. And then it will connect, pick up and IP, and then it won't browse. No real rhyme or reason to when this will happen, or when it works.
I thought that it was an issue with my MacBook Pro, but then my sister visited with her brand new MacBook Pro 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, and while a month ago she was able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue, this weekend she had all of the same issues I was having.
My XBOX 360 and MacBook Pro have absolutely no issues with the wired connection. Only my WAN seems to have this issue.
Did you ever find anything more to this?

  • My MacBook Pro overheats when connected to Thunderbolt Display

I've had these since August 30 of this year.  I switch to Mac and brough home two Pro's and two Thunderbolts.  They have been doing fine, not a problem yet.  Until Friday, when mine started overheating.  My MacBook Pro Retina runs fine on it's own.  But I came home, plugged it into the Thunderbolt, and immediately it started overheating.  It did the same thing, when I woke up Saturday it was so hot, I could not pick it up with my hands.  I found another thread with similar problems, but it was four pages of "I have this problem, too".  It's not sitting on a desk, it's in the stand sold by Apple, and I"ve had it plugged up to the Thunderbolt 80% of the time since we bought it, but never had a problem until five days ago.  Clamshell mode in a stand with wireless Keyboard and Track Pad, all the newest releases of Pro Retina and Thunderbolt. All the updates, everything.  Any ideas?

Connecting an external monitor/display turns on the high-performance graphics adapter which can generate significant heat.  The base-plate can get pretty hot (Apple states this and for this reason says to not use the MacBook Pro on your lap.  They don't even refer to them as laptops.).  Just make sure that nothing is blocking the cooling ports under the display hinge.  If the MacBook Pro actually overheats, it will shut down.  So, don't worry yet.

  • High CPU Usage when Idle

    Hello Crew!!!
I have been using a ThinkPad Z60t, running the OS WinXP Pro that came bundled with the Thinkvantage Software. I have had no problems with my computer for the two years I have been using it. I use it as much if not more then a traditional desktop, covering all aspects of my life, from business to gaming (although it is not a gaming comp, it does me fine). Recently, within the last week or so, I noticed a huge lag-like spike every minute or less, including when the system is idle and isn't playing anything. I ran McAfee as well as AdAware and found no issues out of the ordinary. After reading a few forumn posts, on other websites, I ran a processes check, with Microsoft based software "Sysinternals" and found that over 50-80% of my processor was being used by Deffered Procedure Calls (DPC's) and Hardware interrupts. I chose to reinitialize my entire system, back to factory settings, wiped it all. Guess what it is still doing it!!!!
I have completely updated my OS, and other forumns suggest that there is a hardware issue, or intermittent signal with the CPU or Motherboard, what can I do to test this theory or to find solutions, please help me!!!!!

...but considering it's normal it's ok I guess.
It is not "normal" and cannot be "normal". Programmers like that must be fired immediately.
It's like iTunes - scroll cover flow fast enough, and you can get memory usage up to 1GB (!!?) which is even not fully returned after you stop scrolling.
And those people are making jokes about Windows? Yes, it is ugly but when they have blunders like this, at least they correct them. Just returned from the shop, wanted to buy 27" iMac. 3.06GHz model was running Parallels with Vista, processor usage continuously like 3-5%. iMac was cooking - if I put my face 0.5m from the screen, I could feel the heat!
I don't know about iTunes... some of the recent Mac apps (Safari, iTunes) are so slow/inefficient I stay away from them. However, Logic's CPU use when idle is completely normal for a "real time" application that starts approx 20 threads minimum. All DAW application do this to some extent, some more than Logic.
What's not normal is how much heat the new Macbook, MBP and iMacs are generating, the folks over on the Macbook forums are starting to see heat related failures.
As a side note, Windows 7 is much more efficient than Windows XP_Professional, that's saying something as XP is a good real time DAW OS. After Vista I didn't expect much but Win_7 is a nice OS.

  • Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?

Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?
I have a macbook 6,1, 4gb of ram, and my os seems to be spinning the rainbow quite often and laggy. I watch my activity monitor and it never drops below 90% cpu available. Is this normal? if not what can I do to clean up my os. Does anyone have any resources or help? Thanks

    Hello:
    Answer - no.
The activity monitor should indicate what is consuming the processor when your system is idle.
I just looked at my own system with Safari running and the usage is about 3%.

  • Why is itunes using 94-97% of my cpu, even when idle?

i am running a 2.53ghz macbook pro with snow leopard, and whenever i have itunes running, it hovers around 94-97% cpu usage, even when idle. Whats wrong?

Try initially deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist file and the /Home/Library/Caches/Firefox/ folder. If you have installed any Firefox extensions/plug-ins be sure to upgrade them to the latest versions or uninstall them.

  • I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS. Tried synching my phone through iTunes (11.0.1 I think... on a 2009 Macbook Pro). Now when I connect to iTunes, it says it does not recognise the content on my phone. Is this because my phone (and laptop) are too old?

I have a 16GB iPhone 3GS. Tried synching my phone through iTunes (11.0.1 I think... on a 2009 Macbook Pro). Now when I connect to iTunes, it says it does not recognise the content on my phone. Is this because my phone (and laptop) are too old?
Also, when I tried to Restore the settings, an Error Message pops up that says " The iPhone software update server could not be contacted. The requested resource was not found.
I'm trying to free up space on my phone by removing [literally] thousands of old photos which were originally synched to the phone, because I had forgotten to uncheck the photos button when I synched it ages ago.
I have also tried synching it on my 24" iMac (running OSX Snow Leopard). But again, when I try restoring the phone through itunes, it says the file is corrupted. It sggests unplugging the device, and then plugging it in again. I have done this numerous times with no success.
I'm guessing it must be because my phone (and versions of iTunes, and OSX) are all too old.
    Please can anybody help.
    Cheers,
    Dan_nz.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • Hello, I have a macbook pro late 2011 15 inch with 4 gb ram. My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Is there a fix?

My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Furthermore, when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank and I sit here frustrated. Anytime i wake up my computer, my keys don't respond and I've waited at most 3 minutes untill i can type in my password. Even sometimes when i type in my password and hit enter, it takes forever to open up my mac. I have barely used any storage in my macbook, since i only use it for college, and I have run clamscan wiht no viruses showing... Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
