MacBook Air '11 - Grey Power Button with "You have to restart your computer." message. I reopened it and looked @ the details and it said panic and then a bunch of code.

Basically I was playing my  game and running Skype, talking to friends and the display flickered and then a grey box with a power button and a message that said "You have to restart your computer." It booted up fine, then I looked at the details and it said something about a panic report and the one program it mentioned was Skype. I haven't downloaded anything off of Skype. I'm scared because I just got this computer as a gift and I don't know what to do and I don't want to make it worse. It's been about 15 minutes and it seems to be running fine. I haven't started up Skype again.

Read about Kernel Panics here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742
Most are the result of conflicting hardware drivers or faulty memory, but in your case it seems Skype may have been the culprit. Make sure you are using its latest version.

  • When Waking From Sleep: 'You Need to Restart your Computer' Message Appears

About once a month, when my computer goes to sleep and I wake it up again I get the dreaded 'You need to restart your computer message'. Like I said, it only happens about once a month and not every time I wake it up.
I did upgrade my memory to 8GB a few months ago but I don't suspect that this is the cause since I only get this message once in a while.

Can anyone interpret this crash log and help me find out what's going on?

What would help more is the panic.log entry. See, Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Superficially, I'd say uninstall your Shockwave and/or Flash plug-ins.

  • "You Need To Restart Your Computer" Message every time I try to boot up

I recently installed Mac OS X 10.4 onto my Mac Mini after a licence became available in my home. All was working fine and I updated to 10.4.11 updated safari, flash all that kinda stuff I was missing with 10.3. There was a mega (20.4GB) log file called ARDAgent.crash.log that was clogging up my 80GB Hard Drive leaving it with very little free. This file was there in 10.3.9 but I didn't delete it there and then. After installing 10.4 (I thought maybe it would sort it out - it didn't) it was still there so I tried deleting it. "In use". So I restarted with it moved and as another help topic said I deleted it using terminal. Computer seemed to be running normally and after updating Sockwave Player and a few other things I decided it was time for a restart.
I restarted and 75% the way thru the blue OS X launch sequence I got the "You Must Restart Your Computer" message. Oh Dear thought me. Ah well, do as I'm told. Next time I didn't get as far. It got to just before it loaded OS X bar and then did the same. So, try launch from the 10.4 DVD - worth a try. Did so and for some bizar reason gave me a blue screen. Ok. So what next? I tried the 10.3 restore CDs that came with the Mini and it looked great. It got to the stage of clicking continue to do tests / install OS X and it crashed giving me the restart the computer.
I've reset the PRAM and PMU.
It now crashes with the Grey Screen and Apple logo with the loading sign at the bottom after about 15 seconds after bootup.
I've got a backup but for some crazy reason it's not bootable :'(. I've got other backups but they're of 10.5 and 10.6 so I doubt the mini will even boot into them so I can have a look at the HD to diagnose any further.
Any help would be really appreciated as taking it into a Mac Store is near impossible.

  • "you need to restart your computer" message comes up during shut down

    hey everyone
I seem to have this problem of when I shut my computer down, A box pops up that says i have to restart my computer. This doesn't happen all the time, mostly when i shut my computer down a few minutes after i start it up, like if i just need to print something out really fast. If anyone knows a way to fix this, please post. Thanks.

Yes, you are getting kernel panics. A leading cause is memory, however, there are other causes. If you haven't read this, it may help: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

  • My macbook shows 'you need to restart your computer' message?

    Hi,
Recently my macbook has been occasionally freezing and then coming up with a message in a few different languages saying that I have to restart my computer. I've heard that this is called a kernel panic. It only happens after I reopen my macbook after it's been sleeping. I have no idea what is causing this or how to fix it, it happens about once or twice each day. Any help?
Thanks. I'm pretty new to macs so any help would be much appreciated

Eileen123, welcome to the Forums: this is indeed a kernel panic. The fact that you are able to reproduce it may help track it down and I would suggest you look at Dr Smoke's FAQs on the KP: he puts it all much better. I would suggest, however, that restarting after a KP may just be making things worse and some maintenance would be advisable. If you have the (grey) startup disks, insert Disk 1 and after selecting the language, use the Utilities menu and find Disk Utility. Using that, try and repair the disk, noting any messages that appear (in red).
Have you installed any new software lately or added memory (these are a place to start). Also add some more details to your information as to which MacBook (processor speed) and how much memory.

  • You have to restart your computer...

only had my macbook 2 weeks and i turned it on this morning, opened safari and then this message pops up saying you have to restart :S
    should i be worried?

If the screen looks like this it is a kernel panic.
Disconnect all peripherals, only Apple keyboard and mouse and test. Often connected peripherals cause kernel panics. See isolating issues in Mac OS X. for troubleshooting steps.
It may have just been a glitch or may indicate something is wrong.
Repair Permissions: This should be done after all software installs and updates.
    1. Navigate to Utilities/DiskUtility and launch Disk Utility.
    2. Choose your volume (usually the second icon)
    3. Choose "First Aid" tab
    4. Click on "Repair Permissions"
    Also run "verify" disk.
If the disk needs repair Run Repair Disk:
    Steps for using Repair Disk:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.
    Let us know.

  • You Need to Restart Your Computer Message on 2005 iBook

There are numerous articles already on this and other threads but they don't appear to resolve the problem I have.
Why bother I hear you ask? Well it is for a poor kid I am trying to help who can't afford anything better!
I have reinstalled OSX 10.4 with updates - there are no files, third party software or hardware or peripheral devices.
The iBook only has the in-built 512 mb RAM and the HD would appear to cope with web browsing with Safari and has been through at least 5 restarts without reoccurring until now.
I was able to copy the Kernal Panic message.

I do not think it is the logicboard as the iBook is stable via ethernet cable and offline until I switch to Airport.

The computer is running via ethernet as I enter this data so would be interested to learn what is causing the issue.
Certainly agree it is not economic to repair. I am trying to ensure that I have exhaused all options to fix this problem before throwing it out.
    Many thanks

The panic is related to your Cisco software, apparently as com.cisco.nke.ipsec was identified in the dependencies.

  • Can't get past a grey "you need to restart your computer screen"

    Hello,
I have a few month old iMac 27" i7 quad core for music use and did an update this morning which consisted of an itunes update and update to the screen firmware and two other things I can't remember. Do the usual install and restart business and am now met with the following error:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x558271): "Unable to find device driver for this platform: \"ACPI". \n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.3.12......................
    Debugger called: <panic>
Backtrace (CPU 0) , Frame: Return Address (4 potential args on stack)
7 lines of numbers and letters (please let me know if you need these)
BSD process name correspoding to current thread: Unknown
    Mac OS Version:
    Not yet set
    Kernal Version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 10.3.0...............
    System uptime in nanoseconds: 322691563
This is on the grey screen with the multi lingual "you need to restart your computer message"
Holding shift on startup bypasses the screen and allows me to eject the disk and boot in safe mode or whatever it's called but the bar down the bottom fills up and I'm just left with the rotating bars and the apple logo.
I have tried a few different suggestions I have found on other threads about holding a certain key to start in safe mode or something to that effect but nothing has worked.
I have inserted the OSX install dvd that came with the computer and restarted but that did nothing and now I cannot eject it.
I have backed up a lot of the stuff on there but it will be a huuuuuge inconvenience if I lose the data on this thing.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Stephen

This is called a "kernel panic" (the multi-lingual restart screen). Solving them can be tricky. From the sounds of it, you can probably rule out hardware, but you probably have pretty severe system damage, probably caused by bad hard drive damage. But without more information, it's hard to say. Try looking over [the X Lab FAQ on resolving kernel panics|http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html].

  • "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for seve..."

    Hello,
I have recently been getting this same message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." whenever I start up my computer. It happens about 95% of the time. I have been reading on different forums that I should reset the PRam and the NVRam and I have been doing so and it does help as it does EVENTUALLY start up (sometimes takes me 5-10 min. to get it to start up).
I have also read that it may be the RAM that is loose, so I did check that and made sure that the ram is properly placed (which it is).
I don't know what else I can do. Should I reformat and reinstall Mac OS X?
Here is the exact error form the dump:
    IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 64:87
    AppleACPIPlatformExpert::start failed
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x55c095): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"Macbook 2,1\".\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.26/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:1389
    Debugger called: <panic>

Well just got around to installing the new HDD and RAM yesterday, and I am sad to say... that the problem persists. :/
I reseated the memory and made sure they were in there properly, and I also installed the HDD and ran DiskUtility before I erased/reformatted and installed a fresh version of MacOSX Leopard, then updated to Snow Leopard.
As long as I am using my computer everything works fine, the problem occurs when the machine is shut off or put to sleep for a long period of time. Because when I shut it off and turn it right back on a few minutes later it works, or if I shut the lid and open it 10-20 min. later everything works fine, it's only when the machine is off or asleep for long periods of time.
So, I do not know what else can be wrong.
Should I try to take out the old RAM and just leave the new module in and see if that works out? See if that specific module is faulty?

Your MBP may have had a kernel panic.  If so, post the kernel panic per these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546
An Apple Hardware Test may be useful:

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.
    Ciao.
