MacBook Leopard Bugs

These are the bugs I have so far discovered in Leopard since I got it last night. I should note that I did an Upgrade install.
AirPort Disk
- Accounts do not work, only shows shared account. Does however accept user name and password for log in.
- Application deleted during install, non-functional after reinstall
(Airport Extreme Model # A1143, LACIE Hard Drive Product Code: 301103U (Journaled HFS+ formatted)
Movie Widget
- If a date is selected with no movie listings for your city an inescapable loop begins with the widget asking for the user to find a city with listings for that date. Restart of widget is an acceptable temporary workaround for this bug.
Printer
- All Printer's deleted during install of leopard
(HP OfficeJet 6310)
Disk Utility
- Unable to unmount disk, even when booted from install cd
- Unable to repair or verify disk (due to above error)
- Unable to verify or repair disk permissions
(TOSHIBA MK8034GSX, AH303B)
Spotlight
- Hitting return to select something found in a search leaves the menu bar active and so as you move your mouse it selects everything else in the menu bar until you click your mouse.
Safari
- Typing text in an active field on the top and bottom line causes a disruption in the glowing blue border around that field.
Feel free to post your bugs as well. Oh, and to all the Apple Engineers reading this thread, sorry to ruin your weekend...

Have the same problem with the Airport Disk. I can see the disk in Finder, but can't access it at all - even after "connecting" with a password.
I did not have the same problem with my Airport account data; all remained intact for me - only the shared HD problem.
I was able to use my Airport connected HP2600n printer without any problem, after the upgrade.
Saw other complaints about Leopard being slow/sluggish after upgrade and I've seen that too. Just searching files with finder is very slow.
Lost my installation of Google Earth after upgrade.

  • Faulty unit or Leopard bugs?

A couple of weeks ago, I bought one of the new speed-bumped black MacBooks with Leopard pre-installed. It was great, except for one issue -- the caps lock key would intermittently not work.
So a week after buying it, I stopped by the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store believing I had a had a faulty keyboard, but they took the view that it was symptomatic of a possible logic board problem. On that basis, they swapped out the machine for a new one.
However, I have been having the same problem with the replacement . So I'm wondering whether this might be a Leopard issue?
On one other occasion, the entire keyboard on the new model wouldn't work -- although that was cured by a restart and it hasn't reoccurred.
One other incident on the new machine: I was deleting some pictures on iPhoto and the machine suddenly started to "auto delete" about 50 pictures on its own, one after the other -- making a slight "electrical" sound as it did so. I was able to recover the pictures from the trash, but it was disturbing. Later that day, Apple released an iPhoto update to improve Leopard compatibility. I haven't had the problem since reinstalling it, but, then again, I had used iPhoto on the new model for a while before the "auto delete" incident occurred.
I'm still within my 14-day period (assuming that was zero-timed when I got the replacement), and wonder whether I should swap out the unit because of a hardware defect or whether these are Leopard bugs?
The machine is still a "virgin Mac," incidentally, with no third-party apps or hacks. The same applied to the first machine. So none of these issues could have anything to do with compatibility issues. The caps lock issue continues after the Leopard update that has just been released.
Other than these issues, it's a fantastic machine -- fast, quiet, and a pleasure to use.

However, I have been having the same problem with the replacement . So I'm wondering whether this might be a Leopard issue?
Other people, along with me, are having similar problems also. I would say it's a Leopard bug.

  • I am using a macbook leopard why can't i bring songs from my playlist to my ipod i get an error message saying ipod can't be synced disk not found this just started happening

i am using a macBook Leopard and suddenly I can no longer ring my songs from my playlists to my ipods. I keep getting the message Ipod can't by syncd disk cannot be found. this has never happened before and I have 4 ipods that cannot be upedated or changed.

This happens with ALL of your iPods?  So, it's probably not a problem on the iPod side of the connection.
If you have not recently (at least since this problem occurred), be sure to restart your Mac.  At the same time, you can also Reset your iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
A Reset just restarts the iPod (it is not a Restore).  Then try it again.
If that does not help, select the iPod in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, on the Summary tab, if Enable Disk Mode is currently NOT checked, see if checking it and clicking Apply makes any difference.  This is more of a test.  If that setting makes a difference, it may provide a clue for the actual cause.

  • Fix for BT headset nightmare in VMWare Fusion? (Macbook Leopard)

Appreciate any help after struggling for over a day trying to connect a top Bluetooth headset (Jawbone)...
    Thanks,
    Mark
    Openworld.com
    CASE:
    2 GB Ram Macbook
    Leopard OS
Fusion 1.0 running WinXP Service Pack 2
    Jawbone Bluetooth Headset
Bluetooth headset works for sound input/output when paired and turned on -- in Leopard OS (only)
Bluetooth Enabler installer for Windows successfully installed (as prompted by VMWare) from the Leopard CD drivers folder
VMWare's Sound, USB Bluetooth menu items in Fusion confirm association with Leopard
VMWare window Bluetooth icon (at bottom) shows Bluetooth link to Leopard remains OK
    PROBLEM
Bluetooth control panel (in Mac OS) disappears for the entire time that WinXP is launched in Fusion
In WinXP, sound input/output to Jawbone headset does not work, even though the sharing icon for Bluetooth at bottom of VMWare Fusion window remains active (showing blue rather than black)
On exiting WinXP, the missing Bluetooth control panel in Leopard system preference reappears -- but a working link in Leopard with Jawbone headset can only be restored after a Macbook retstart
FIXES TRIED WITH APPLECARE (all unsuccessful)
Removing Library preferences (main and user-specific) for bluetooth and restarting
    Zapping the PRAM
Creating a new user with Admin privileges, and creating a new linke
    Removing the battery
    NEXT STEPS
Please suggest any troubleshooting ideas ... Applecare tech support reps' concluded (after 3+ hours on two calls) that this may be a a VMWare Fusion 1.0 bug

This is no Mac, Leopard or Headset issue - I experience the same on a MacMini DualCore, OS 10.4.11, VMWare Fusion 1.0 and Win2K.

Hi, does your MacBook have Firewire, or just USB?
FW is far faster if you have that.

  • Problem with "date -d" function in bash script. Leopard bug?

I have this really nice rsync bash script that I use to make rotating snapshot backups of my different Ubuntu servers to a single backup server.
I am now trying to use this same script on my Leopard machine, but it seems to have a serious problem with the following lines of code:
    lday=`date +'image-%Y-%m-%d-%H' -d '1 day ago'`
    lweek=`date +'image-%Y-%m-%d-%H' -d '1 week ago'`
    It generates the following error:
    date: illegal time format
    usage: date [-jnu] [-d dst] [-r seconds] [-t west] [-v[+|-]val[ymwdHMS]] ...
    [-f fmt date | [[[mm]dd]HH]MM[[cc]yy][.ss]] [+format]
It's clear that it doesn't like the "-d '1 day ago'" part in my code.
Is there a different way in Leopard to get yesterday's or last week's date in a bash script? Or is this a Leopard bug?
Could someone please help me out? I've be trying to research this for the past 8 hours, but can't seem to find any solution to this problem.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mybook Studio Edition external drive shows in macbook leopard but not imac

I have a Mybook Studio Edition external drive that I am using to store files and as a backup for my macbook leopard using time machine. I wanted to add files from my imac tiger but it does not show up in disk utility and the system profiler says unrecognized drive. I don't remember formatting it - it was just plug and play out of the box. Does this mean it is formatted for Leopard and won't work on tiger?
Is there something that time machine does that it will only be recognized by macbook?
    The imac is:
    2.4 ghz
    3gb ram
    300gb drive
    10.4.11
    the macbook is
    2.4ghz
    4gb ram
    300gb drive
    10.5.6

    Hello,
On the iMac ... Try repairing disk permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Want to take reinitialize MacBook (Leopard) from departed employee

Have a former employee's Macbook (Leopard) and want to repurpose but it still has her password protecting the machine. I'm happy to reinitialize the entire hard drive and have a retail Snow Leopard disk but not the initial start-up disks that came with her computer. Is there an easy way to do this or do I need to go to the Genius Bar. BTW - I'm the CFO of the company and the purchaser of all our computers.

You can reset a password using any install disk. Just boot to the installer and when you can select the Utilities menu, you will see an option to change the password.
The Snow Leopard disks will allow you to erase and install, also. Just run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu when you can get to it.
If you don't have the original disks, you can get replacements from Apple (Call AppleCare) for a small fee. If you ever intend to sell the computer, part of the Software License Agreement is to pass along all software that came with the computer. If not, and you have the disks from identical machines, they will work to restore it to original condition.

  • HT1446 Macbook Leopard (Black) Battery Issue

I just bought a battery for my Black Macbook (Leopard) and after one cycle, the battery isn't charging. The wattage of my A/C charger is fine because I bought a new one maybe a year ago from the Apple store according to my computer. The orange light of the A/C charger goes on, but the bottom lights of the notebook don't blink. Help!
I can prove that I just bought this battery with a purchase confirmation. I'm in Thailand (Not Bangkok) for the next few months, so I can't just go to an Apple store any time I want.
    Any input would be helpful.

  • Buying a new macbook/leopard..

i was wondering with all the things i've read about problems with leopard should i buy a tiger based macbook and wait to install leopard or buy a new macbook that comes with leopard pre-installed?? thanks for info

This happens with every upgrade. Some people have problems, scream loudly, and suddenly there are a dozen new posts here saying, "From what I've read Panther/Tiger/Leopard is full of problems!"
Really? What have you read? Where? What problems and how many people seem to have them? Because my installation of Leopard--on THREE computers--went without a hitch and I'm using it with no problems whatsoever.
You have to keep in mind that people who have trouble free upgrades are far less likely to write about it. Those with problems will write a lot about it, and make it seem like the OS is full of bugs. From what I am reading, Leopard is terrific. Everyone I've talked to has had trouble-free installation and no problems.
In answer to your question, however: are these problem with Leopard that you're reading about happening on newly purchased Macs, or with Leopard installed on Macs running Tiger? If the later, then keep in mind that every person's computer is configured differently. You don't know what third party software these people have on their Macs, how much RAM, how much Disk Space. You don't know if they've added in third party RAM or attached other devices, nor, unless they said, do you know the age of the Mac, or if it's had prior problems.
The first version of any major OS like this is bound to have some bugs. That's the nature of the beast. But a new computer with nothing on it, a blank slate, is less likely to give those bugs a chance to manifest because the computer, itself, hasn't been compromised by the tinkering we all do with these computers, software or hardware wise.

  • Reinstalling OSX on Macbook leopard 5.8

Hi there, I was thinking of doing a reinstall, I know I would need to back up and all of that, I have a macbook 2008 with leopard 5.8, my question is what else do I need to know, there were many updates over the years, how does that all work?
    1) will the updates still be available to me?
    2) when updating, would I be redownloading every update, or is there just one most current one that covers everything, like if there were 3 or 4 bug fixes for an application or utility or something, would I just need to download the most recent or all 3 prior as well?
    3) I know it may be hard to guage but any loose estimates regarding how much time will be needed or some outline of what to expect would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks.

    Hi Niel,
I followed your advice and installed the OS 10.5.8 combo updater and Safari did not appear.  Next I downloaded Safari again and reinstalled it.  It kept crashing so then I downloaded the 10.5.8 update and now it is running but no browser window appears.  When I select File>New Window or File>New Tab it crashes and asks to relaunch.  I have also asked Safari to reset itself but that didn't help either.
    Any further advice?
    Thanks.

  • A Leopard Bug?

I believe there is a bug with OS 10.5. When I have Apple Works running for a while, the widow disappears, but the program stays on, I just can't see the session. I do see and can muse click on File, Edit, Format, etc. I quit and restart Apple Works, and it's the same thing. I have to restart the computer to get it to work properly. This also happens with Logic 8 and iCal. I didn't have this problem before I upgraded to Leopard. Please Help!!

I too am having problems with Appleworks after updating to Leopard. I am not able to open Appleworks at all. I get an error message: The application Appleworks quit unexpectedly. the options are Ignore, Report or Relaunch. When I try Relaunch I get the same message.
I made sure I updated to 6.2.9 Appleworks and have restarted my computer (MacBook) several times. I still can't get Appleworks to open.
Anyone have any ideas? I have a lot of files in Appleworks, they will not open in Pages, since they are drawing format in Appleworks.

  • Macbook Leopard Update- Hard drive not recognized?!?!

Question- What do you think caused this problem, and how can I best fix it?
    (See below for information)
Well, I finally decided to update to Leopard. I put the disk in my Macbook, and everything went smoothly as it verified the installation DVD- until the end of the verification, that is. A message screen would pop up telling me the disk was dirty. "Okay," I thought,"No problem." I was a bit puzzled, though, because the installation with the same Family Pack disk went fine on my father's Mac. I cleaned the disk, and tried again. And again. Each time, I was greeted with the same message at the end of the verification. Frustrated, I took the disk and my laptop to Best Buy, hoping someone could help me there. We ran the installation again... to no surprise, the same problem occurs. This time, though, when we quit the installer and try to reboot, after the gray screen with the apple at the beginning, we are greeted with a black screen with one command line. NOT GOOD! We rebooted the computer again, this time starting up with a disk to check the permissions and hard drive. The diagnosis: The permissions on my Mac are screwed up, so it's not recognizing the hard drive. The Best Buy guy claims the permissions have been messed up since I bought the Mac, and everything will be just fine and dandy after I transfer the data to another computer, install the Tiger disk that my Macbook came with, update to Leopard, then transfer the data back to my Mac. I'm taking my Mac to the closest Apple store (about 2 hours away) for advice from the pros on Saturday. Until then, I'm hesitant to even turn the thing on, out of fear it will spontaneously erase the data or something to that extent.
Question: (in case you forgot)What do you think caused this problem, and how can I best fix it?

    Unplugging worked!!!
I have no idea what PRAM is but someone said that unplugging your computer resets it so, I thought I'd give unplugging a shot. So, I shut down my computer and unplugged it. I also unplugged the power on the HD. (because I wasn't sure which one they were talking about.)
Anyway, I went away for about five minutes.
I came back plugged in the HD power first. Then, I plugged in the power cord for the computer and turned it on.
As soon as I logged in I was asked if I wanted to use my external HD for Time Machine backups.
I saw the icon for the HD on the Desktop where is belongs. I can open the drive and access the files with no problem.
Try this if you haven't yet.

  • How I got my L7780 Direct Digital Filing to work on MacBook Leopard 10.5.6

My situation was that I had miraculously been able to get Direct Digital Filing working once, but couldn't remember the exact steps I made to get it to work. I then had to clean reinstall my MacBook. And even when I put the exact path name that I had used originally in the web server for the printer (EWS?) and had set the network settings the same way I had originally. I was unable to get DDF to work.
I was able to set up the L7780 wirelessly. I was able to print and scan from my MacBook wirelessly. BUT I couldn't get Direct Digital Filing to work.
Neither Technical Support nor internet forums helped me entirely. I just took good tips here and there and finally got it all working together. Had a nightmare of a time figuring it. I called HP Tech Support and they told me I had setup everything on the L7780 correctly...only it just wouldn't working. Tech Support didn't offer to send me a new printer, but only suggested that I could do without Direct Digital Filing???
    What I did...
Uninstall everything, the HP software from laptop. Making sure that all traces of the printer, or its drivers were off computer. Reset Network settings to default on printer. Reset factory defaults under Tools Menu on printer. Reset my wireless router.
    1. I turned the router on
    2. I turned the printer on (at this point, it is not connected to the network at all, either ethernet wire, or wireless, it has no IP address)
    3. I turned my MacBook on
    4. Connected my MacBook to L7780
    5. Installed the Printer software that I downloaded from HP website on MacBook. (Installed L7780 as USB)
    6. Tested the printing, and the scanning from my MacBook to make sure it works.
    7. Downloaded the Software Update from Apple that always comes up to update the HP driver after installation.
    Then for Direct Digital Filing,
    8. From the L7780 I selected the Setup Wireless Network Wizard or something like that. After that, the printer was connected to my network, and had an IP address.
    9. (Unable to get DDF working on my MacBook, I made a last ditch effort to see if it worked on my Windows Vista Laptop that had worked before as well) I turned on my Windows Vista Laptop, opened up Command, and pinged the IP of the printer. It worked.
    10. I created a folder and configured it to share for the printer. After configuring it. It will tell you the Address that you use to type into the Direct Digital Filing speed dial path to the folder. I did that. I tried DDF to the Windows Vista folder and it worked on my Vista laptop. Encouraged...
    11. I then tried it on my MacBook. I got into Terminal. I pinged the IP of the L7780. Strangely, I got an endless ping result list, it wouldn't stop. You have to press CTRL+C to stop it.
    12. Then I created a folder in root directory of my MacBook Hard Drive. "Scan." Went into Systems Preferences. Went into the Sharing Tab. Clicked the + sign to add a shared folder. Selected the new "Scan" folder. Made sure the Option was for SMB sharing (Must type in user ID & password). Made sure "File Sharing" was selected.
    Voila it finally worked!!!!
    NOTE:
In the EWS? (web embedded print server by typing in the IP of the printer in your web browser)the Path is as follows: \\HARDDISK\Scan
type in user name & password
leave PIN blank, or erase it if there is anything there
(If you have it in your Documents folder, it would look something like this... \\HARDDISK\Users\Username\Documents\Scan ..... However, becareful in the EWS if your path name is too long, you can't type in the entire path .... ALSO the original time that it was working (I don't know how)... I had my path as \\192.168.1.5\Username\Documents\Scan .... For some reason I was able to use my IP address of my MacBook, and then skip to my User name without the "Users" path before it .... However, since I reinstalled my MacBook, that address no longer worked for some reason.)
    NOTE:
Either After I got it working on my Windows Vista Laptop, or after pinging the printer from my MacBook. I noticed a strange change in my Networks in the System Preferences. There was a new Location ncamed "hp nct temp set" instead of the original "Automatic" location that was there before. On the left, all "Airport" icons, "Connected" & full signals, instead of a variety of icons, Bluetooth, Airport, Ethernet, etc that the original Automatic location had. Either way, it seems to be making the Direct Digital Filing working, so I won't ask why. Further details in "Advanced" showed nothing different other than under "Airport" "Preferred Networks:" there was an additional Network Name "hpsetup" other than my home Wireless network. All other settings seem to be the same.
    SUMMARY:
(Like I said, I'm not sure if Direct Digital Filing started working on my Macbook running Leopard because I got it to work on my Windows computer first, or because I used Terminal to ping the printer.)
    but...
    1. Setup L7780 wirelessly by making sure your Wireless network is working, and then turning on the printer, and then select "Wireless Setup Wizard" under Network on printer. It will give you a list of wireless networks from which you choose yours, and then type in the security password. After that is complete and it says your printer is now connected to the network, select display wireless network settings to make sure the L7780 has an IP address.
    2. On your Mac, open up Terminal and ping the IP of L7780. CTRL+C to stop it from pinging if it doesn't stop automatically
    3. Create and share folders on your Mac (making sure it's SMB with user id and password, and that the path to the folder isn't too long)
    3. Then setup Direct Digital Filing speed dials in the EWS by typing in the printer IP address in your web browser and going on the "Settings" tab.
    4. Test it from the L7780 by pushing the Direct Digital Filing button under Scan!
I wrote this out for all those people that must be having a hard time with this as I had myself, and not getting any help from the internet or from Technical Support. I hope I figured it out for most of us.

I found this post and the HP instructions for setting up digital filing to be extremely frustrating, because nothing worked -- UNTIL I tried shutting down my Mac and rebooting after entering the settings (a simple restart would probably have done as well). Digital Filing then immediately worked like a charm. For the benefit of others like me who find abstract paths useless, here is the specific path setting that works on my Mac (you will of course have to use a different path on your Mac, but this will give you a real-world example of a path that works) -- this is on an HP Officejet Pro L7780:
    \\BillCheesemanG5\cheeseb\Public
    In abstract terms, this is:
\\<computer name from Sharing pane of System Preferences>\<short user name>\<folder named Public in my user domain, which comes already set up for sharing when you install Mac OS X>.
    I hope this helps somebody.
