Macbook Pro 15" right fan making strange noise

I have a mid 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, 2.3 Ghz with 8 GB of RAM running 10.9.4.  About 3 days ago it fell on to tile floor from about 10 inches off the ground and hit the floor at a 45 degree angle.  There was no damage except for a small scratch near and under the charging port.  Everything was working perfectly until a day ago when I noticed the right fan was making a strange high pitched humming noise.  It's very quiet, I can only hear it when there's no other noise but it is extremely irritating when I can hear it.  Other than the noise the fan works fine, it speeds up when when the computer gets hot, and in Temperature Monitor nothing gets hotter than it should be.  The computer works completely fine, but I'm wondering what could be making the noise.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Macbook pro 2012 - right fan suddenly broken.

So i have a 7 month old Macbook pro, and all the sudden when i turned it on. the right fan started making the following noise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdQvf3WPKKA (not my movie)
Is this still under the warrenty? Because i don't think the fan really needs to sounds like this.

Ask the repair shop.   When you CALL AppleCare, request a loaner if the repairs will take a long amount of time.

  • Any way to stop new MacBook Pro hard disk from making loud noise??

I received a brand new MacBook Pro today, and I thought everything was fine. However, when I went to use it in a very quiet room late at night, I noticed an almost unbearable noise coming from the right side of the trackpad. From reading previous discussions, I realize that it is likely the hard disk which is making the noise, and a design flaw makes the noise seem louder.
For other people who have the same problem, is there anything that can be done to make the noise go away?

You can return it for a replacement within 14 days of purchase.

  • Macbook freezing, running slowly, and making strange noises

Hi. Just today my wife's MB froze while doing nothing more than playing music in iTunes. She had to leave so just closed the lid. When I opened the lid later, it came back from sleep eventually (playing the music), but was making an odd clicking noise. It sounded like it was coming from the upper right side under the keyboard. It didn't sound like the noises the optical drive usually makes, and there was no disc in it.
I left it charging, and when she came back to use it later, found that it was running really slow, taking forever to open applications (prolonged spinning pizza of death), and still making that strange noise. She restarted it twice, and the same thing occured after a reboot?
Any thoughts/suggestions? We have applecare, so we'll likely be giving them a call if it doesn't go away, but I like to check here first.

The same thing happened to my notebook last night, and I did some research. Apparently one of the reader arms in the harddrive separates from the drive and swings loose, digging gouges in the magnetic disk.
If it still boots, make sure you get all your un-backed-up information off of it before it crashes.
Mine is dead, and the only thing Apple can do is replace the drive.

    Hi,
Maybe you should take a look at your Firefox add-ons and get rid of the ones you don't really need. Also, you have two torrent items mentioned in your report. Downloading torrents runs the risk of bringing in malware.
Another thing to do as maintenance is to start into Recovery -- holding down Command and R keys together while booting up -- and using Disk Utility (bottom of the box that appears) to Verify your disk and Repair disk permissions.
    Regards.

  • MacBook Pro Hard drive is making weird noises and slow

its important that you understand what has led to these issues. I first was witing an essay on my MacBook. Whole thing dies, screen freezes and entire thing crashes. i have no choice but to force it off by holding the power button... Then the fun begins. I log in and it gives me a circle with a slash basically telling me no you can't use your computer.. Ok.... Let me just get apple support on chat... after 3 painful hours, they even had no idea what was happening... I erased my hard drive after 4 repairs and verifies.. looked fine sure... Redownload os x 10.10 bam, the issues begin, first you hear a weird high pitched noise that varies from just heard by me to my entire household... Lovely Sure makes doing college work harder in the morning as my roommate can hear it and he's under 40 blankets. Next the slowness, niw when I mean slow I mean every 5 seconds I get the pinwheel because it can't multitask correctly. I mean wow I can't even go to the apple in the top corner without it attempting to "load" the menu. even just on pages (which was a nightmare to download I'll get to that soon) Itll give me the pinwheel after a few words... App Store, broken. I tried to redownload pages iMovie etc. 40 clicks for each because they each showed an error occur.. Some right when I click some when it was downloaded... 1.99 GB and then it tells me it can't install... Then, it's a nightmare to log in because start up take 5 to 30 minutes depending on how ever much this machine wants to infuriate me. It's only 7 months old, there is no excuse for this, and I'm very disappointed, now before I take me and this machine to geek squad located in Best Buy can anyone locate with any knowledge why this thing is behaving so disturbinG. Please excuse the horrible spelling, I had to  do this on my iphone and download google chrome because Safari doesn't support apple community When asking questions.

Your storage device is probably faulty.  It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
    Ciao.

  • My macbook pro won't stop making noise! It sounds like the fan but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

my macbook pro won't stop making noise! It sounds like the fan but I'm not sure. Any ideas? It's really worrying me because I haven't had it for up tp 2months and last week everytime I switch it on it makes sooo much noise. And I treat like an egg so I don't understand whats going on.

    Hey,
My friend had a very similar issue to yours. The issue came down to the pins of the MagSafe not meeting with the MacBook perfectly causing the lights and the transfer of power to be wacko. I'm not sure if this is issue that your experiencing, but its worth checking out the pins and the MagSafe area on your MacBook for debris.
Troubleshooting Magsafe power adapters with stuck pins
If that is all clear, then I would suggest you call AppleCare or take it in to an Apple Store to have it checked out.

  • MacBook Pro fans making excessive noise?

So here's my problem: I play Minecraft on my 13" MacBook Pro (2011), and whenever I do, the fans start up.  For about 5-10 seconds, everything is fine. Then the fans start running (excessively loud) and the laptop becomes very hot. I know a lot of people's MacBook Pros have noisy fans, but is there any way to keep the laptop cool while doing tasks on my laptop (the fans usually start going while playing Minecraft or doing work for long periods of time.)? Would a cooling pad help? Is there any way to stop the fans from starting and heating up?
    Thanks!
    - Alex

Have you done an SMC reset? That can sometimes effect the fans running: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
When the fans are going full tilt, bring up Activity Monitor, and see if there's a particular program or programs that are driving high CPU usage.
Confirm that your system thinks it has 4GB memory, and that some didn't fail.
Check your print queue to ensure that there are no print jobs that didn't complete printing. OS X can put alot of effort into trying to reprint them.
    That's just a few ideas ...

  • Just installing a few updates from the Mac App Store for mountain lion on my 2010 MacBook Pro, during this it made a noise and then the screen and keyboard went off, like it is off. What happened, is it off...or should I just wait it out?

Just installing a few updates from the Mac App Store for mountain lion on my 2010 MacBook Pro, during this it made a noise and then the screen and keyboard went off, like it is off. What happened, is it off...or should I just wait it out?

    What kind of noise?
The only things I can think of that make noise are fans and disks. Fans usually will not cause the computer to shutdown as you describe. My guess is your disk drive died. I hope you made a backup prior to start the ungrade.

  • Macbook pro's exhaust fan

My macbook pro's exhaust fan has never came on since I have owned the computer, then suddenly is came on at full speed during boot up and now its off again?

Are there any fans other than the exaust fan cause I have "fan control" and it normally reads a temp around 120 F and a left and right fan speed of 2000 rpm but when it went haywire it said the temp was 32 F and -1 rpms.  I do hear the fans running normally, like now, hhbut they are very small sounding.  The fan I heard when there was a problem sounded completely different, it was moving a huge volume of air.

  • Does Macbook have a Right Fan?

Very excited to get my first Mac, its very ... shiny~. I noticed its always running at about 45 to 50 degrees celsius, so i got this Fan control program to boost the rpm of the fan. I noticed that the left fan rpm is changing as i change the settings, but the right fan rpm is always -1. Does MacBooks have a right fan? Should i be worried that the right fan rpm reading is -1?

As FM mentioned, there is only one fan in the MacBook. The MacBook Pro has two fans... which is why they show both in the app.

    Hi Frederick,
You're spending a lot of money.  I will add my 2¢ -- -- but you must, as I assume you know, fully research your options.
    Environment:
Start with your workspace (inc. lighting) and your clothes.
    Screen:
The iMac screens are lovely, but not, from what I hear, monitor-grade accurate.  For critical color work, use NEC or Eizo monitors.  I use NEC, with their SpectraView II software and an X-Rite ColorMunki photospectrometer.  At the time, this was the least expensive color-calibrated workflow.
    Printer:
Epson's are great, imho.  I use a 3880 in my studio and rent a 9900 by the hour when needed.  I have read of problems (iirc) with one of the printers in the 7000 line, however.  The take-home lesson that I filed in my brain was, "If you're going to spend the money on the 7000 line, just get the 9000 line."
    Aperture workflow:
Aperture is a fantastic workflow tool.  Since you are adept with PS, you should set PS as your external editor.  Use Apertures formidable tools for storing and organizing your Images, and its robust editing tools for either all your proofing, or all but your most demanding editing needs.  That said, allow a good bit of time to get the feel of Aperture.  It is not at all like Bridge.  But your important choice is which RAW converter you want to use.  There is, imho, no reason to use Aperture if you are going to use Adobe's (or anyone else's) RAW converter.
    Good luck!
    --Kirby.

If you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it.
OOW try the following:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

My macbook pro w/ retina makes a funny noise! Some kind of bird sound or water splash.
Maybe once every hour or 2 hours.

Rather than uploading the file, and await our responses, why not take the product back to Apple?  My guess is that you accidentally changed an alert sound but, since you claim you didn't do anything untoward, who knows.

  • Equium P200-1ED - Fan making considerable noise

I have had laptop approx 17 months with no issues but last week noticed what I think was the fan making considerable noise - as if the bearings have gone or the fan has been damaged and is now clipping something? A bit like a car - I know the noise was not therebefore and this worries me.
This noise is intermittent, more often at start-up and far less frequent when laptop is in power saving mode (which makes me confident it is the fan??).
Is this a common fault? Should I be too concerned -i .e. can ignoring it lead to something more serious? And how do I resolve?
The fan appears completely unobstructed and the vents are clear as far as I can tell but I have not taken the laptop apart. If it is the bearings, one would suspect this is a known problem??
    Thanks,
    Mathew

    Hello
I think its not easy so say what the reason is for this but in my opinion something is blocking the fan.
In your case I would try to clean the notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. You can buy it from a local computer store and its easy to use because therefore you must not disassemble the notebook.
    Its worth a try! ;)
I doubt that this is a common fault. In the forum I cant find may threads about this.
