MacBook Pro 17" Solid State Hard drive issues

I have just brought a MacBookPro 17in as an upgrade for my 13in
Model Name:    MacBook Pro
  Model Identifier:    MacBookPro8,3
  Processor Name:    Intel Core i7
  Processor Speed:    2.3 GHz
  Number Of Processors:    1
  Total Number Of Cores:    4
L2 Cache (per core):    256 KB
  L3 Cache:    8 MB
  Memory:    16 GB
  Boot ROM Version:    MBP81.0047.B24
  SMC Version (system):    1.70f5
  Hardware UUID:    B33437F0-982A-5E30-84E2-61098856EA5B
  Sudden Motion Sensor:
  State:    Enabled
The problem I have is the solid state drive that works in my 13in does not work in the 17in
It works fine in an external case and in 13in but not 17in
I have tried reformatting it and installing a new system. Nothing works... after a few minutes all I get is the wheel of death and the laptop crashes.
I am assuming the laptop is faulty as I can't fault the solid state drive which is a OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD

My understanding is that the new macbook pro shipped with lion. And the only OS that will work on it is lion. The earlier ones that had the option of snow leopard could be set to run the older OS even if lion was installed. BUt not now. You still have the other hard drive with lion on it I hope. You might be able to make a clone of the lion hard drive and get it to install on the solid state drive. Someone on the discussions site should be able to tell you how.

  • 2011 MACBOOK PRO WITH SOLID STATE HARD DRIVE.

Hello everyone. I would like to know is it worth going with the 512 solid state hard drive or the 750 at 5400 rpm or 500 at 7200 rpm. My use is for Audio programs such as Serato, Logic and Protools. I would like to know if anyone has the solid state and how you like speed of the computer. Basically is it worth the 1100.00 extra.

No one probably wants to touch this because it really is about how high end a user you can afford to be. I suspect your audio programs will work fine with a 7200 rpm hard drive, depending perhaps on file sizes. I did buy a 512gb ssd and put it in my 2010 mbp. It has read and write speeds comparable to what Mac promises with the in-house drives (maybe a little faster). If you can afford an ssd you would never go back to a hard-drive. It removes a performance bottleneck that will always be there to some degree with a regular hard-drive. 512gb ssd's are a luxury at this point. Your call.

  • Solid State Hard Drive Issues.....

    Hello.
I had a Sattelite P-500 built by Toshiba last spring & it's beginning to give me trouble. It is a dual hard drive model, one 60 gig solid state & a 500 gig storage drive. My problem is that all but less than 1 gig is used up on the solid state drive, yet when I add up everything shown on the drive it comes to just under 29 gig. However on the "Computer" screen, the one that shows the different drives & devices, it shows that I have just  856 MB of 46.8 available on this drive. Also, when I run the onboard diagnostic tool, I get a "fail" on the hard drive.
    Any help will be appreciated

I called the Toshiba supprot line & the woman whom I spoke with, which I could barely understand, was less than helpful. Her only "advice" was to run the recovery disc & start over. When asked if this issue would return, she had no answer.
Somehow my 60 gig c drive is loading itself up. Why can't I see the extra space being swallowed up here?
Seems to be a LOT of very smart computer savvy people on this forum, could someone please help me out with this?

  • MacBook Pro 10.6.8 Hard Drive Issues

I ordered a new hard drive (The exact same) for my macbook pro and here is what happend. When I boot from the CD and I get to the Utility panel I don't see my hard drive, it is not listed under Disk Utility nor under the selec area. I have rester the NVRAM/PRAM at no avail. I finally used the Hard Drive as a USB and then I found it. I formated it and install the Mac OS X on it without any problems. When I unplugged it and put it back in the computer, it won't recognize it. I get a lock  symbole in the gray area but nothing happens. I've had similar problem in the past when I used a similar Hard Drive and I can't remember how i finxed it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot

If the HDD will boot your MBP externally but not when installed in the MBP, that usually indicates a bad connection.. Either the connecting plug is not seated properly, ot the connecting cable is loose or faulty.  Open the MBP and check very carefully for those conditions. To repair or replace connecting cable is not an expensive repair, even at an Apple store.
    Ciao.

  • Can I put a solid state hard drive in my older MacBook Pro?

Can this Macbook pro 2.2GHz MacBook Pro (MC723LL/A) be upgraded to a solid state hard drive?

Yes. Visit OWC for suitable SSDs from their 3G collection. Also, you may look into their DataDoubler that lets you remove the optical drive and install the HDD in that space. They also will have some installation tutorials.

  • What is a good solid state hard drive for a Macbook Pro (2007 model)?

What is a good solid state hard drive for a Macbook Pro (2007 model)? I imagine they're still expensive, but I'm curious which would be good picks if I were to go for it.

I am using the Corsair P256 (256 GB) SSD. It is actually a Samsung drive. It works well, but will only give you part of the speed advantage due to the fact that the MBP from 2007 only has a 1.5 GB/s interface, while newer MBPs have a 3.0 GB/s interface.
Impact on battery run time seems to only be an increase of 15-20%.
Boot time on my MBP is 40 seconds to login prompt. System seems very responsive.

  • I am buying a new macbook pro but i want to fit my own ram memory and solid state hard drive , will apple permit this without voiding the waranty.

i am buying a new macbook pro but i want to fit my own ram memory and solid state hard drive , will apple permit this without voiding the waranty.

yes you can do it and not void the warranty.  Those are the only hardware changes that Apple permits.  Instructions on how to upgrade the ram and remove and replace the hard drive are even included in the owners manuals for MacBook Pros.

  • Adding a solid state hard drive to a Mac Pro 3,1

I have two hard drives in my Mac Pro 3,1.  I want to add a solid state hard drive and upgrade Yosemite to it.  I will eventually use my existing drive as extra storage.  Does anyone know if this model of Mac Pro can support SSD drive?  Also, can I mix and match normal hard drives with SSD drives?  I know I will also need an adapter since SSD's are 2.5 inch.  The one I am thinking about getting is the Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD).  Any feedback that can confirm or deny compatibility would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

I have Mac Pro (4.1 2009 model) and I have Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB. There is an issue you you want to run Yosemite.  That drive requires that TRIM is enabled otherwise the perforamnce goes down. There is a Trim Enabler  that you can get but but default Yosemite rejects it and disables it so you end up with a driver with TRIM not eanbled. There is a hack that allows you to get it working again but it has some security implications.
    Just be aware of it.

    Many thanks lllaass,
The Touch Copy third party software for PC's is the way to go it seems and although the demo is free, if you have over 100 songs then it costs £15 to buy the software which seems not a lot to pay for peace of mind. and restoring your iTunes library back to how it was.

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac.  You should be able to set a password for it. Save it.  Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer,  I suppose,  back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity.  As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,
This handy article from Apple explains how
How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support''
don't forget to de-authorize your iMac if you don't want to play purchased stuff there
and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine  and go for it.  You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups  of your stuff.

  • Can I update my 2009 iMac to solid state hard drive?

I have a 2009 version iMac and am thinking about replacing its hard drive with solid state drive. Inspired by my new MacBook Pro with solid state drive.

I am assuming that your backup is the one provided by Time Machine to an external USB HDD that is attached to an AirPort Extreme base station. If that is the case, then yes, you can restore your data from this Time Machine backup. The easiest way to do so is to use OS X's Migration Assistant, and then, choose the Time Machine option.

Installed a cloned 500g solid state hard drive but unable to boot in macbook pro. Can only hear drive spinning quietly, no chime to launch OS. Total darkness. Can anyone help? thanks in advance!

    Hi Retired Engineer,
Yes, you're right. It is the Seagate Momentus XT and it does not spin. That was just a layman's term for computer illiterate like myself. After hours of inspection & a prayer, I discovered by pulling the 4 GB memory chips out I put in, replacing the 1.5 GB back in for the memory which I upgraded 3 years ago. Chime! It works! So it is the 4 GB memory causing the problem. But why? Does that mean my Macbook Pro does not support with more memory? The fan noise is now gone which I suspect it was caused the other overheating Seagate hard drive & eventually causing the crash. However, the top bar temp indicator shows 174˙F @ 000rpm. Does that also mean the fan on the left is not working? (the right fan on the board works). Do they work simutaneously? Or left fan is just a back up?
Thanks for your reply & kind gesture.

  • Solid state hard drive space problem

    hello to all,
my friend owns the macbook air, we bought the one with the 64GB solid state hard drive.... we checked all the folders within the user folder (application, library, music etc.) and they total a 12GB or so of space! but it says the hard drive is full and he has 1GB left..... what might be the problem???

You may wish to try this application: Omni Disk Sweeper
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/
It'll scan the HD for you and give a break down as to where things are and hopefully assist in resolving the issue.
At least then you can determine if the number it returns equals the number you expected. Also, is your friend syncing a local copy of his iDisk? Or a FileVault user?

  • Solid state hard drives

    Aloha,
Getting ready to dump my old MacBook Pro G4 and planning to pick up a new one -- came across the question of solid state hard drives for the first time. Any layman advice on these? I produce television -- not a computer whiz and I don't want to get caught (again) spending too much on stuff I don't need. I do use FCP Studio, Adobe CS4, and other pro apps with HD footage and high res stills so I'm looking for the most storage, fastest processing, most reliable, etc.
I have had a number of external drives fail on me losing years of work that I thought was "backed up" on the drives -- then the drives take a crap. I have a 2.5TB raid connected to my desktop that held all my archived video data for a time -- then when I wanted to use the material -- the raid crapped out on me too and I had to re-digitize hundreds of tapes.
I'm really tired of having to back up stuff to dvds -- getting the material back in order to use it is tedious and I have questions about quality after all the compression which takes place getting to the disk. Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Any new model with Core i7 for processing power.
SSD = YES. Buy as big as budget allows. Get enough to do your primary work on SSD. Store on external RAID disks when done.
RAID != BACKUP. Make multiple copies even when using a RAID. Look into a DROBO or QNAP. Buy a bigger chassis and add disks as needed. QNAP with occasionally attached eSata drives for backup is what I recommend.
