MacBook Pro audio issue

I've had my MBP for two weeks. It's the bottom-end of the brand new line, glossy screen.
Every time I put my computer to sleep (SafeSleep), then bring it back, the audio is crackly, and sometimes stops working entirely. This is even more apparent when I leave an audio application (QT, iTunes) running when I do so.
This problem is very annoying, and I see no simple solution to it. It's not just the audio applications, but I'm sure the sound card or intervening software. Since I'll be using my computer for (digital vinyl) DJing in the near future, this will become a VERY important issue soon.
Is there anything I should try before taking my computer in to the Apple Store techs?
As a side note, for a computer with better specs than my last, I expected better overall performance than my last (MacBook white original release).
Regards,
Dash

  • HDMI to Macbook Pro audio issue - help??

I've just bought a mini displayport to HDMI cable to connect my Macbook Pro up to my tv. When I play stuff through the internet (ie. YouTube) I hear audio, but there's no sound when trying to play a movie from my external HD... help anyone?

I've got a Mac OS X version 10.7.5.  When I play something such as a clip from YouTube from the internet there is sound through the TV, but no, not when playing something from the external or the laptop hard drives.  I've got a separate audio cable which I'm now using to make up for it, I'm just confused as to why I have to.  I'm playing videos through VLC which I consider to be a pretty **** good media player.

  • Macbook Pro Wifi Issue

I incorrectly posted this in the wrong thread this morning.
I'm hopeful you might be able to help me diagnose a problem I'm having. I'll provide as much detail as possible.
I have a first generation MacBook Pro. As of this morning I was running 10.5.6 and up until this week was using a linksys router and a comcast cable modem.
I used to have a great wifi signal throughout the house (always full strength), and around 12-18 months ago noticed the signal would weaken. The best I would get would be minus the top bar on the signal, and usually only if I was directly above or next to the room with the router. There were no new phones or devices added that might adjust the signal. On the other side of the house, I would have no signal at all.
My wife has a nine year old ibook and has no issues connecting through wifi.
When I bring my laptop to her parents' house or to the Apple store, where they use Belkin on N or Airport Extreme, I get a full signal.
I've recently suffered a hard drive failure and had a replacement drive installed. The problem persists despite the software update.
Not knowing if it was a router issue or an airport card issue or a combination thereof, I went to the Genius Bar. The genius recommended I upgrade my router to Airport Extreme, and if that doesn't work to return it and he'd focus on the airport card or antenna. I could get the flat rate repair (no AppleCare at this point) for $320+ to repair the problem if Extreme didn't work.
I installed the Airport Extreme router and got a full signal in the basement, far side of the house, upstairs - everywhere. Until around 10pm. The signal died from the basement. If I walked into the room with the Airport Extreme router, I'd get a full signal. If I left the room, I'd get a partial signal. If I walked any distance (10-12 feet), the signal would die. I restarted both the modem and router with no change. I reinstalled the linksys router and got a depreciated connection. I restarted the Airport Extreme again and got a full signal throughout the night, morning, through restarts, and when I returned home from work.
Last evening after using youtube extensively it died again. Linksys would barely work if I switched back, and no matter how many times I restarted I couldn't get the signal to last outside of the area of the router. I left it in the basement overnight shut down, restarted this morning, and had a full signal.
I'm looking for any potential guesses as to what may be causing the problem. I don't want to replace the card if it's the antenna or sink too much cash into a machine if it's a heat related issue linked to Generation 1 syndrome.
During all of this the ten year old ibook works fine. I know a lot of macbook pros have issues with their wireless and don't want to sink in the cash if it's more complex than that. Any advice is much appreciated!

  • Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue

Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue
    Running latest version of Mavericks.
    Followed the exact bootcamp proceduce.
Have official window 8.1 version on cd.
All goes well until I have to format the 65Gb partition. Disk=0 and partition=4
Can't get over it. Altough I formatted it via a hint found on the internet with "dislpart" in NTFS. Wich also went weel and give the labelname "BOOTCAMP". But still no luck.
    I have two questions:
1/ How to start my mac again in normal mavericks mode?
2/ How can I overcome the windows installation issue?
Tried already a lot of hints found on the internet.

First, make a time machine backup. You will need to erase ands reformat your hard drive. I had the same issue. The issue is that you can't install Windows using bootcamp without having the hard drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Do this from disk utility or recovery mode (hold down command and r at startup). Then you have to restore the backup to the hard drive. Then make a usb installer drive with bootcamp and then partition and install. Here's a tip: after you install bootcamp and are in the Windows desktop, go into the installer drive and then go into the bootcamp or support folder, then find a installer that contains the Apple bootcamp drivers. Also, you will need to convert the disk to an iso file. TO MAKE THE USB DRIVE FROM A DISC, USE THIS LINK

  • Macbook pro shutdown issue

Macbook pro shutdown issue when I push the power button it immediately goes into sleep mode

    Hello Marrio22,
Thank you for the question.  With OS X Mavericks, the power button has new functionality:
OS X Mavericks updates the power button behavior on Mac computers.
Using the Power Button to Sleep & Wake
Tap the power button in Mavericks to put your Mac to sleep or to wake it up:
Tap the power button once to put your Mac to sleep.
Tap the power button again to wake your Mac.
Press the power button for less than a half a second to sleep or wake your Mac. This duration is similar to pressing the Space bar or Return key to wake your Mac. The power button works this way across all Macs using OS X Mavericks, including both notebook and desktop computers.
    Accessing the Shut Down Dialog
Press and hold the power button for 1.5 seconds, to bring up additional options:
Forcing the Mac to Turn Off
Hold down the power button for 5 seconds to force the computer to turn off. Important: You may lose unsaved documents if you force the computer to turn off this way. Use this method of turning off your Mac only if it has become unresponsive for an extended period of time. Normally you should shut down the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu, or from the shut down dialog pictured above.

  • Is there a way to stream my macbook pro audio through itunes to basestation

Hey I love to stream my itunes through the basestation but, is there a way to stream my macbook pros audio so I can hear things playing from my safari or final cut or whatever other program to the speakers in airport??? Thanks

Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil should do just what you want. I use if for streaming things like Slacker and Pandora through my Airport Express. It's not free but it's well worth the price. You can try it out for a few minutes (then the sound degrades) to see if it works for you.

  • MacBook Pro Audio Jack Issues

    Hi guys,
So I’m having a really odd issue with my 2009 MacBook Pro 15”. Specifically an issue with my headphone port and my normal 2.1 Logitech speaker system.
I am hearing a buzzing/static/humming (can’t decide) noise from my external speakers when the headphone jack is plugged in. Without performing any action on my Mac, the sound will start, last for about 20 seconds and stop.
I can also manually manipulate this interference issue by doing a few things, like playing  audio from a website/media player; watching videos with a media player or opening any site and allowing a flash file to play (YouTube). These actions seem to manually start this strange sound.
Now for the fun part. Whilst the headphone jack is plugged in, removing my HDMI and Ethernet cables seem to stop the noise completely. Touching the outer port with the HDMI or Ethernet will make the sound return. And when I remove the headphone jack and hold the connector with one hand and touch my MacBook Pro with the other, the sound gets louder - more noise.
I have also tried headphones, I can still hear the buzz It’s just not as loud.
I’ve read that this could be a grounding issue. I’ve unplugged everything and changed MBP chargers. The only thing I haven’t tried yet is different HDMI and Ethernet cables.
    Any ideas?

    Hey there d3adm8n,
This noise you hear when you have coming from the 3.5mm jack sounds to me like it could indeed have something to do with a grounding issue. I would look at the information in the following article about that, named:

  • MacBook Pro performance issues w/2nd monitor and FCP7

I have this MacBook Pro bought brand-new in January 2010:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 6 MB
      Memory: 8 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
and until today had never attached a second monitor to it. Today I hooked up my Samsung 24" to do some dual screen editing in Final Cut 7.0.3. I was unable to play back my video at full speed in the second monitor, and after a few seconds of skippy playback I'd get that error message about unable to play back video at full speed and to check my RT settings. I was using a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter. My computer has no issues playing the video in the laptop's monitor at any resolution and any quality settings (I've never changed the RT settings or anything else in the menu ever but I tried every combination this time). I then tried using my TV as a 2nd monitor with an HDMI adapter. Same performance issues. I then tried my friend's newer 13" MBP 8,1 and it performed flawlessly with the same project & footage. I feel like my $3,000 computer should outperform a $1,200 one even if mine is a year and a half older. Any advice?
    Chris

Wow, you posted this perfectly to coincide with an identical problem, albeit using Logic Pro 9.1.5 rather than FCP.
Last week, I purchased a 23" external monitor to use alongside my "flagship" 2011 15" hi-res, 2.3 i7 Macbook Pro with 8Gb of RAM.
It is connected via a mini-DVI to D-sub analog (not that that should matter?) and all appeared fine.
The first issue I had was with my MBP's fan now running CONSTANTLY, when I have the second monitor attached. Even when the machine is completely idle.
When using the machine to record audio, this is a fairly hefty problem and not something I had anticipated - indeed why would I anticipate such a thing?
What is far, far worse though is that over the last few days I have had repeated problems with performance drop-outs and errors in Logic and I have trying to fathom out why. Realising that the only major system change made, was the above monitor connection, I ran some tests.
I restarted my MBP, no other apps were running and with my new 23" monitor attached acting as main display with MBP built in display on as secondary
I loaded up a fairly demanding Logic project which was hitting 40% to 60% CPU usage when using the built in MBP display last week
I ran activity monitor and had CPU usage history open
The above project now repeatedly overloads and playback halts in a given 8 bar section - with CPU at 80% most of the time
I disconnected the external display, no shut down, I just let the machine switch to the built in 15".
Started the same project, the same 8 bar section and hey presto - CPU usage back down to 40% to 60%
The above was reflected in the CPU usage history with the graph showing CPU use down by about a half, when running this Logic project WITHOUT the external display.
There is a very useful benchmark Logic project that has been used as a test by many users to gauge Logic performance on given Apple hardware.
The project has about 100 tracks pre-configured with CPU intensive plugins, designed to tax the CPU.
The idea is that you load up the project with tracks muted, press play and then unmute the tracks steadily until Logic us unable to play contiunously because of a system performance error.
On my MBP, with the external monitor NOT attached, I can play back around 50 of the audio tracks in this benchmark project.
With the monitor attached, I can get about 22 tracks playing.... which is actually a far worse a performance drop (-50% I think!?) than with the first example!
I did also try with just the external monitor attached and not the MBP display and performance was about 10% better than with dual monitors - so still extremely poor, to say the least.
This machine is the flagship MBP and has a dedicated AMD Radeon HD6750 GPU which should take care of most if not ALL graphics processing - I mean it's capable of running some pretty demanding games!
Putting aside the issue of constant fan noise, there is no reason AT ALL, why using an external monitor should tax the i7 CPU this way - it's not as though Logic is graphically demanding... far from it.
I am on 10.6.8, Logic 9.1.5, all apps up to date via "Software Update".
I will of course, be contacting Apple...

  • Macbook Pro/Silverlight issues

The most recent question & reply I can find in the Community is a year old, so I am asking again.
I have a Macbook Pro running OSX version 10.8.2 (purchased in December of 2012)
I had been watching movies, TV shows, etc. on Netflix for several months with no problem.  Last week while in the middle of a show, a screen popped up stating:
                                                                     Silverlight Installation Problem
                                                        Error code:  2103
I uninstalled & reinstalled as suggested. Quite a few times, actually.  I sent my question to Microsoft Silverlight Support, but did not get a response, of course.  I have read online about others with defiinite issues with Silverlight for Mac.
Last night I tried reinstalling once again, and that time it worked.  I was ecstatic, to say the least.  I have been watching a TV series, and very much wished to continue.  I watched a couple of episodes last night.  This morining I was able to watch a full episode (40 minutes) and most of the next episode.  THEN, the screen went blank, but the audio portion continued to work.
I know I can uninstall/reinstall Silverlight again and hope it fixes the problem.  But is it only a temporary "fix" as it apparently was last night?  I guess I really want to know:
Has anyone actually had any luck in REALLY "fixing" this Microsoft Silverlight/Mac issue?  Or should I just forget about watching Netflix on my Mac?
(Yes, I'm angry, sad and confused).

For all of you that's having this problem don't call microsoft or apple they are way too smart so they can't fix this problem.
    Here's the solution.................
Step 1; Turn your anti virus protection off.
    Step 2: Go to netflix
Step 3: After the movie comes on, turn your protection back on!
Thats it. I fixed many computer using this. You are welcome...

  • Connect iPod to MacBook Pro audio line-in port?

My 1st Gen iPod's Firewire port fried recently; it still delivers a charge to my iPod but won't allow it to mount. I can still listen to music with the headphone jack.
What sort of cable can I use to attach my iPod to the audio line-in on my Macbook Pro?

I also have this problem but with a slightly different twist..
I was using my plantronics (old ms gamevoice headset) with 10.5.2 and it worked, then installed the m-Audio Firewire Audiophile beta drivers and neither the audio-in or the m-audio audiophile line-in cause any VU-meter response (nor input) whereas the standard inbuilt microphone does.
After uninstalling the m-audio drivers the situation is still the same.
Oddly - if I plug in the headphones into the line-in (rather than microphone) then speak into them I actually get input audio (and VU-meter response) through the MBP's audio-in.
So the story about no power is used (hence the headphones create enough to register the sound) sounds about true... very annoying as I thought my old headset had died and went out and bought a new one.. that still doesn't explain the audiophile input issues..
Now I fully expect both companies to point fingers at each other.. I don't care - just get it fixed please.

  • MacBook Pro Audio Distortion

I have an August 2009, 15" MacBook Pro and while using the headphone output to run a recent show i noticed severe distortion when i turned the volume up above half way, has anyone else had the same problem and is it worth getting it checked at the apple store??

I completely sumbled across the solution to my similar problem. I hope it works for you..
Spotlight search for "Audio MIDI Setup" (Snow Leopard- but I think it was the same for leopard, too)
Change the box which says "2ch-24bit" to something else and then change it back again.
Completely solved my audio issues of slight to moderate distortion at high volume.
    Hope this helps

  • Macbook pro audio problems on some avi movie files

    Hi
I am a recently converted Mac user, having been PC all my life. I have loads of movies in avi format that play perfectly well on my Win XP Pro PC. I have tried playing them on my new macbook pro, 2.16ghz, 15" using Quicktime 7.1.3 and DivX player v1.0.4 The picture is fine but there is no sound. As I said, the files play fine on my PC, sound and picture. Can anyone help me please. Is it a codec issue? I believe I have the latest versions of the 2 players. Are there any other players I could try?
    Many thanks

    Hi!
Congrats on your mac purchase!!! It's a slippery slope into appledom now
Anyway. Your question. There's every chance that your XP codecs for divX contain the AC3 codec. However, DivX and XVID codec support on the mac isn't as good. You may get divx working fine, but as you've found out, no audio.
Have a look at: http://www.woggledog.com/mac/index.asp?subject=audiocodec as it contains a couple of links to AC3 codecs. However, I'd avoid all of that malarchy, including your DivX player, and just use the perian codec components. Contains loads of divx and xvid codecs and also the more important AC3 codec!
    Good luck,
    paul

  • Advice appreciated on a MacBook pro HDD issue

    Hello,
I've just suffered my first real system problem and even though I have a few ideas for how to fix it I thought I'd post here and ask for some advice to see what you guys think.
First the problem... Basically my MacBook Pro's HDD has an issue and won't boot. I don't think it's a physical problem with the hardware (although I'm open to advice on this too), I think it just needs a reformat and fresh install of the OS. But obviously I need to get my files off of there first and this is the problem, but read on for more details.
So that's the problem in a nutshell, but here's the full detail.
It's a MacBook Pro, late 2011, 17", 750GB HDD, 8GB RAM, bought in Miami September 2011 while I was on holiday there (I live in the UK), came with Snow Leopard installed, was upgraded to Lion a few days after purchase and then upgraded to Mountain Lion about a month ago.
Last week I was using it when it suddenly restarted itself. I let it restart, then began using it again and about five minutes later it restarted again, but this time it didn't boot properly.
It stayed on the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning clock-type wheel. There was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen, it took ages to move, then finally got to about 33% and the machine restarted itself again.
I tried lots of restarts but every time it did the same thing or it never even showed the progress bar, and just had the spinning clockwheel forever.
So I held down alt and booted from Mountain Lion's recovery partition instead. I launched Disk Utility and tried to verify / repair the drive but it came back with errors and said that it couldn't fix them. Apologies, I realise typing this that anyone reading would probably quite like to read the error long but I can't remember it and I'm not currently at home. If needed I'll run it again and post.
Anyway, the basic point is that Disk Utility is giving a message saying to copy all my files off the drive and reformat because it can't fix it. Incidentally the SMART status of the drive is fine / normal. Not showing any problems there, which is why I'm hopeful it's not a hadware issue.
So I need to copy my files off, and this is the real reason I'm posting this thread, because I don't mind doing a reformat / fresh install of Mountain Lion, but my last backup is a couple of months old (I know, naughty me) so while it wouldn't be the end of the world to copy files back from that, I would lose a bit of data so would like to get them off the MBP's HDD now.
At this point, let me list the kit I have at my disposal:
    - At home I have the aforementioned patient (MacBook Pro), a 2TB external HDD with USB2 / FireWire 800 and a NAS box that sits on my network. I also have one of those cables that lets you connect an internal HDD via USB (more on this later, as I suspect it's going to be my best hope).
    - At work I have a Windows 7 PC which I do not have any admin rights to, A Windows XP PC that I do have admin rights to and an iMac that is running Leopard (10.5.8) and cannot be upgraded due to various boring work reasons I won't go into here.
So the first thing I tried was booting into the recovery partition, launching Disk Utility and trying to clone the HDD over to the external 2TB drive I have. Cloning the drive like-for-like gives an error message (again apologies, I can't remember it) and trying to copy to an image file on the external drive gets all the way to the end (takes ages because Disk Utility keeps going to sleep) but then when I try to mount the image it gives an error and fails, so I don't trust this method.
So booting to recovery and using Disk Utility seems to be no good.
I thought about trying to take the MBP to work and launching it in target disk mode, then copying files, however I read that you can only have one FireWire device (the target computer) connected when doing this and my iMac at work doesn't have enough internal HDD space to copy all my MBP's files off, so I would need to have an external drive connected to the iMac in addition to the MBP, which sounds like it's not a good idea, or not supported by Apple anyway.
I thought about making a bootable Mountain Lion USB stick as I have a 16GB USB stick I could use for this, however I don't know how to make the bootable USB using my iMac as it's on Leopard (can't be upgraded for work reasons) and doesn't even have the Mac App store on it for me to re-download the Mountain Lion install file.
I think I have the Snow Leopard DVD that came with my MBP so could probably boot off this, but does that allow me into Finder or anything that would let me copy docs from my internal HDD properly over to the external drive? Or is it just going to look similar to the Mountain Lion recovery partition, with Disk Utility and a few other options?
I don't know whether the Mountain Lion recovery partition lets me install Mountain Lion onto my external drive? Or a USB? I was a bit scared to start clicking through options to see whether it would ask me which drive I wanted to install to, just in case it doesn't and begins erasing the main HDD as one of the first things it does.
So this leaves the cable that allows me to connect internal drives via USB. This cable has saved my bacon in the past and I suspect it may be my best option once more. Obviously this means I'm going to have to open up the MBP and remove the HDD but I installed the extra RAM myself and I've installed full-size (3.5") HDDs in the past so I should be able to handle that, unless there's anything radically different with 2.5" drives I'm not aware of.
I've heard people mention DiskWarrior in the past but to be honest if I'm going to spend that sort of money I'd prefer to just put it towards an new, larger HDD, probably a 2TB model.
So there we are, thanks for reading this far. If you have any advice about another (or better) way to get my files off the MBP I'm all ears.
I've never actually done a fresh install of Mac OS before either, only upgrades downloaded from the Mac App Store so any advice around that might be handy too, but mainly it's the file copying I want help with as I'll probably just boot from the recovery partition to reformat and reinstall Mountain Lion.
    Thanks
