Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

How can I install Snow Leopard on my 15" MacBook Pro without using its DVD drive?

I'm assuming your dvd drive is broken? if you have a thumb drive large enough (8GB or better), you can use another computer to make a bootable image from the install dvd to the thumb drive. then you can install from the the thumb drive.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro sometimes restores its RAM when I open it, even though it did not run out of battery?

Sometimes when I open my MacBook Pro, it restores its RAM, as if it has run out of battery, even though it has not run out of battery and it has been charging. Why does this happen, and should it be happening?

It's similar to hybernation mode in Windows.
If you put your laptop to sleep, after X amount of hours it will move to the "deeper" sleep level (save memory to disk and shut down...), to save up battery.
Otherwise if you left your laptop asleep in the evening, you could wake up to a dead battery. Not a great surprise when you in hurry to leave the house with your laptop...

If you experience distorted video or no video . . . take your affected product to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store to determine which service and support options are available. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
No, it has not cost anything in the past.
Note: as of Dec 7th 2012, it is unlikely products qualify for this extended repair coverage.
That does not mean it's an automatic "no."

First to find the STOP code that is rebooting the system, i need you to reboot your system and tap F8 repeatedly before the Windows XP splash screen. And select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure", then wait for your system to randomly reboot and report back here with the STOP Code.

Can anyone help me with any suggestion?
    Thank you in advance!

Go to the Apple Store - it's rather difficult to solve those kind of problems on these forums as they may be hardware or software related. Apple will be able to run diagnostics not available to mere mortals.
One thing that you'll want to do before taking your machine in is to have a backup. Whether Time Machine or using one of the cloning applications (personally, I use both Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MacBook Pro often unresponsive in Mountain Lion. Should I upgrade to Mavericks?

Hi, I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard about a month ago. Since then, my MacBook Pro has often become unresponsive, giving me the spinning beach ball -- or doing nothing at all -- when I have just a few applications running. (Typically, these may be Mail, Safari, iTunes and sometimes Adobe Lightroom 5.) I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 and 4GB of factory-installed RAM. It was a snappy performer in Snow Leopard. I'm wondering now if I should try upgrading to Mavericks, and perhaps get a boost from the memory compression. Or will this potentially take whatever problems are slowing me down now and make them worse? Interested to hear your opinions, thanks.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal.

  • Is putting my Macbook Pro down on its frontside bad for it.

Before you write that my question is probelly the most stupid question you have ever heard then please hear me out.
I am deeply happy for my new Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch, probelly the best computer i have invested in, but also the most expensive, so beause of the price i am really concerned about how its doing.
But often when i sit it down at its backside of my table it feels like i put it down with a bit too much strengh and because of that i look at it on its other side/ on its frontside just to see if it has any damage on its backside, luckily it doesn't, but what my question is if it is bad to turn my Macbook on its frontside to much? will this sort of thing damage its inside (like for examble the motherboard, or graphicard) Will that sort of thing make its lifespan shorten?
Or should just relax all of these wonderings?

Hi. I'm running 10.6.8 snow leopard and I downloaded and am running SMC fan control.  http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23137/fan-control Overheating may not be the issue, but you can run this and see.

  • Macbook Pro Keeps Rebooting randomly?

    Hello,
My Macbook Pro started ramdomly rebooting when I installed OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 a few months ago.  It rarely rebooted so I figured it was some old kext that kept breaking.  I recently upgraded to Mavericks and did a clean install of it.  It now reboots much more often and has a weird kernel panic.  I am not sure whats wrong?
    Please Help!

    Hello Mikey-Bot,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Pro was getting recurring kernel panics.  I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" in the article below to help isolate and troubleshoot this issue:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

  • MacBook Pro Random Reboots!

    Hey,
I need help with my MacBook Pro. It's the first unibody, from october 2008, 15 inch.
Its running Mac OS X 10.6.8.
The problem is that it just shuts down randomly. Afterwards, it reboots. I can't do it on purpose and sometimes it happens twice or three times a day, sometimes it doesn't happen for a couple of days. Sometimes late at night under no load, sometimes under normal use.
Do you need any crash logs or more information? Where can I find them?
    Thanks for any help,
    Marvin

Boot into Safe Mode. If the problem ceases then you need to remove Virtual Box and the software that installed com.bluecoat.kext.bckd 4.4.1f20. If this does not fix the problem then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

  • After updating to Mac OS X 10.9.5 my MacBook Pro 2010 reboots constantly

Every update makes more problems. First 10.9.2 introduced the randomly dis-functioning of my external monitor and now after updating to 10.9.5. my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) is rebooting every 30 minutes. It drives me crazy.
Does anyone experience the same problem and even better has found a solution or a tip where to look at?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

The crash is caused by a GPU kernal panic:

  • My macbook pro keeps rebooting. What is the problem?

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro that I bought in August 2010.  Performance has been awesome until this past month when I noticed it getting slower.  This past weekend for the first time ever it would freeze and reboot itself.  I took the action to clean up large files, unloaded some apps, etc. all things they say to speed up your mac in the youtube vids.  Cleared up alot of space and it was moving faster for a day.  Then this afternoon it froze again and rebooted, but never successfully rebooted and now is just rebooting constantly.  I cannot even get to the log in screen anymore or turn it off completely....I am going to wait for the battery to die out, but what is the problem?  What can I do to solve this? I downloaded the newest IOS X update this past saturday, thats when I think the rebooting started, but the computer was getting noticeably slower before that.
Thanks for the help, really dont know what I am doing here

Time to see about the PRAM battery.
By the way iOS and OS X are different systems.
iOS is the operating system for iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch.
Mac OS X is the operating system for Mac labelled computers.
