Macbook pro only boot with R key
I have a problem with a macbook pro .
I have snow leopard and after running onyx my computer only boot with the R key pressed , I have tried option-command-PR , reset SMC , repair permissions without success .
I have an external apple led cinema but with or without the error continues .
Any help would be appreciated.

Why did you try booting with the R key pressed? From what I recall that key simply resets the screen settings, and shouldn't have anything to do with your system starting or not. I would remove it from the external display until we can get this resolved.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with your NVRAM. Try booting with this key sequence cmd-opt-n-v.

Mac Pro only booting with option key down
I have an 8-core mac pro that is great except for some odd booting issues. I have 3 internal drives, one with OSX 10.4.9 on it, the other with just files and the last with windows XP. I also, at times, have USB drives (or an iPod) plugged into the mac. When I restart, even if I have selected a boot volume in the startup settings, the machine will just go black. Sometimes it will play the startup chime multiple times, other times only once or not at all. The only way to get it to boot up into osx or windows is to hold down options. Even then, it only seems to work if I unplug all external drives from the machine. Any ideas whats going on or how I might fix this?

15" MacBook Pro only boots some times with SuperTalent 256GB SSD
I just bought a new MacBook Pro and it works as it should. I put an SSD in an external enclosure then plugged it into a USB port and cloned my MacBook Pro's drive to it. It worked and boots and runs from that external drive, wither via USB or Firewire.
Next I installed the SSD inside the MacBook Pro and it will only successfully boot one out of 5 times or so, it is random. When it does boot it works fast and well. I can put it to Sleep and wake it later and it is still working correctly. But why will it only boot one in 5 times or so?
It will always get the gray apple and usually the spinning gear but if the gear lasts more than a few seconds it will not boot regardless of how long you let it try.
I have tried OS 10.5.7 and 10.5.8. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Go read the topic with 71 pages about the Macbook Pro and SATA II. It is more than likely due to the latest firmware update that Apple released than crippled MANY hard drives.

MacBook Pro only boots in safe mode with pink vertical stripes across screen.
So on Friday night I was using Chrome on my MacBook Pro, when all of a sudden little squares of light flashed randomly across the whole screen and everything but the mouse froze. I thought that was weird, so after a few minutes I forced my computer to shutdown. I waited a little and then turned it back on, and opened Chrome again. The same thing happened again, so I forced shut down, backed up Time Machine and ran a virus scan. Nothing came up, so I put it to sleep and and went to bed. Then Saturday morning I went to open my laptop and it was off, which was weird, so I went to turn it on. After the apple logo and spinning gear went away, it booted to a light blue screen and stayed there. Again I waited and nothing happened, so I held the power button down until it turned off. I tried again but the same thing happened, so I booted in Safe Mode.
This time there were inch long vertical bars of horizontal lines, kind of confusing but here are two pictures I took of the screen that hopefully help. http://imgur.com/oj2WbZL and http://imgur.com/O1hwJ1B . When it finally loaded I had another issue, I had 6 pink vertical bars across the screen and a box of pink horizontal stripes around my pointer, http://imgur.com/BJBzu74 . I performed an extended Apple Hardware Test and after 17 minutes it found no issues, and as it performed the test the lines got whiter and made the screen harder to see http://imgur.com/XahBD3s .
I got my laptop June 2011, so it's not that old. I just want to know what this problem could be. I don't know if it's the connection from the screen to the computer, the hard drive, the logic board or something else. I'm really worried that it's something major, so any help is greatly appreciated.

It's normal that you see that the problem is random, but the fact that your Mac is only starting up in safe mode indicates that your Mac can only start up if the VGA driver is used. Moreover, if you open Console, you should start seeing "GPU Debug Info Start", which indicates a GPU failure.
As you have a backup, take the MacBook to an Apple Store or reseller. In the case of the MacBook Pro, the GPU is soldered onto the logic board, so the whole logic board has to be replaced, being a very expensive repair.

My macbook pro only boot from external drive
Hi, my macbook pro had a problem, some day way extremely slow, and i restarted it, when it was booting the little apple turned into a a circle with a slide cros and then into a folder ... and then into the apple.. and so.. many times... i tried to start in text mode.. and it said fail loading kernel..
and i tried everythin but couldnt make it work... until i extracted my hard drive, and plugged it in the same macbook pro using a usb adapter... and it worked.... does anyone knows what the **** is going on??.. and how can i fix it.. is a middle 20009Did you run fsck while booted into single user/verbose mode?
Run Repair Disk:
First check the S.M.A.R.T.status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in thepanel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look atthe bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says“Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”
If S.M.A.R.T.status is "Verified," run Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insertdisc > restart > immediately hold down c key and keep holding it untilyou see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language andclick Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > open DiskUtility > select your HD in the panel on the left side> click Repair Diskat bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until itsays “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need astronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyondrepair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repairutilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). Whenthis is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Oncebooted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and runRepair Permissions. -
Macbook Pro only boots in Safe Mode
Hello,
I've read a few discussions about MacBooks only booting in Safe Mode, but my circumstances are a bit different.
Yesterday I installed a new piece of RAM. The installation was careful and went well. When I went to restart the computer, however, it would not load after the gray screen with the apple appeared. So I restarted it in Safe Mode and it worked fine (abeit there is no sound, can't use the disc drive, etc.)
The interesting part is that while in safe mode I clicked on the apple in the top left corner, clicked "About This Mac," and it appears that the computer accepted the new ram (I originally had two 2-gig sticks [4 gigs total], and I swapped out one of the sticks for the new 4-gig stick [therefore I have 6 gigs total]). So the computer recognizes the new RAM, which is good news, but I've still got a problem.
I've tried rebooting several times, and have even tried the Apple Hardware Test, but it froze shortly after I started the test (the same thing happened about 4 times).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

According to MacTracker the Mid 2010 models with i5 processors can accept 8GB of RAM.

Amazon and eBay are not good sources of top tier reliable and tested RAM, your just going to be spending more money returning it.

It's a MBP mid 2010. Last year it had some problems and an Apple authorised shop changed the HD and upgraded the OS from Snow Leopard to Lion. After that it seemed fine. Recently it started getting very slow and apps (e.g. Chrome, Flash) would crash. At some point it seemed stuck so I gave it a hard shutdown - bad idea. After that it would only boot in Safe Mode. I ran repar disk and repair permissions from the Disk Utility and it booted normally again but extremely slow. I upgraded to OS X 10.8.2, but didn't solve it. I tried booting with Command D to have a hardware diagnostic - it wouldn't boot and now it only boots in Safe Mode.
All data is backed and I have an external HD (but not an OS X Disc). Ready to anything. Help please!

Also you can perform #1 and #2 as these occur before Safe Mode, so you just reboot again with Shift key if you need to enter Safe Mode again.
At this point it sounds like your hard drive is dying or some sort of other hardware issue which I can only advise this.
Try to install OS X on a external drive and boot from it, if it's fine then you know your internal boot drive is dying.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
You can replace your internal drive yourself.
OtherWorld Computing is pretty good about providing drives and tool kits to perform that function yourself.

I start my MacBook pro up the apple logo comes on then a grey screen comes down from the top and it say hold down power botton for 7 seconds and restart but when I do it does the same thing all the time now
Your Mac is suffering from kernel panics.
I would suggest booting from the Install DVD and running AHT.

Macbook Pro only starts with back cover open
My macbook was not detecting it's internal hard drive and therefore wouldnt boot any OS. I carry my macbook with me often when im on my bicycle so I thought maybe an internal connection was loose.. so I opened it up and made sure everything was snug. I turned it on to make sure it worked and everything was fine -- --- until I screwed the back cover back in. It shows the same error now ( cant find my hard drive ). Why is this happening?? Would very much like to use my macbook without all its internals showing. If anyone could help me with this it would be really appreciated.

I loaded disk utility from the internet recovery option (which was my only option) and disk utility could not find anything besides the image that it was running on.I would look very carefully to see if there is anything that seems to be 'hanging' when you orient the MBP in the correct direction. Perhaps electrical tape in the right locations may be a temporary fix. A genius bar visit is still the best option.

MacBook Pro only Boots up into the Recovery partition ?

All of a sudden MBP will only start up into the Recovery Partition ?
When it first start you see a Grey Circle with a band across it ( like no entry sign ) then it just boots
into the RC, as mentioned above.
I did a DU check on the HD and it comes up fine, running 10.8.4 or 5 ( can't remember ).
Anyway does anyone out have a solution Please
Steve ( UK )The drive has either failed to the point the hardware can't find the OS or the OS has gotten so corrupted that it no longer functions.
From that Mas OS X Utilities screen open Disk Utility and post a picture of the top level item selected on the left and the partition tab so we can see what the partition layout looks like. -

Hallo guys, i have a big problem with installing Windows 7 professional 64 Bit on my MacBook Pro Retina 15 with Boot Camp. No matter what i try i get a black screen after partitioning or get a message like " No bootable disk" or " No System Disk availabe".
My Mac has : OS X version 10.8.2, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB memory, 2.6 GHz Intel i7 and is only a week old
My Boot Camp is version 5.0.1
My Windows InstallingDVD is one year old now, i needed it to build a PC last year, hope that doesnt make a difference, its a full version, so not just for upgrading.
From what i saw in the apple support it should work on my macbook. I hope someone can help me.

Somehow an USB-stick makes problems while Windows wants to install, i dont know why. So i just made everything over DVDs and now everything works fine. -
I have installed Windows 7 into my Macbook Pro 15 inch with Lions as operating system. (current model with 2.2 GHz i7 processor, 500 GB HD ad 5400 rpm). When I started with boot camp, the system promped me to create a disc, which I presume is for the drivers for windows 7. Now windows is intalled. What do I do with the CD that the system created for me? Also, why does the system automatically start in Win7 instead of Lion. I need to pression the option key to have it start in OS X. I thought it was supposed to be the opposite.
Insert it while you are in Windows, if it does not autostart run setup.exe.
Choose your startup disk using Apple>System Preferences>Startup Disk (in OSX) or Control Panel>Boot Camp>Startup Disk (in Windows) -
Im having trouble getting my macbook pro to boot up after a fail safe boot, im getting as far as the grey screen with the apple loggo. so im trying to run a disk repair but is saying the disk is locked, how do i unlock disk??
Some clarification may help.
You say you cannot boot normally. It shows a gray screen with the Apple logo.
Did you say it will boot successfully in Safe Mode (boot, then hold down the Shift key)?
How did you boot the machine to run Disk Utility? (Which keyboard combinations)? -
i have backed my iTunes with over 10,000 songs on a hard drive and than i reset my computer to factory settings because my email was hacked, when i downloaded the music back to my macbook pro only 2030 were able to be downloaded . how can i download all my music back?
michel p.I usually err on the sideof caution when someone says "downloaded" and take it to mean anything fro actually downloaded, to copies, to imported, to moved (frolder to folder), but even if they were "downloaded"... if the old email was hacked, and subseuqently closed out, that leaves the downloaded files "orphaned" if you will, belonging to the old ID. So, while they may be on the HD, they're inaccessible now.
One of the biggest reasons I NEVER keep anything in my library with DRM employed in it. I bought it. I own it. I'm not going to get locked out of it. -
My macbook pro is infected with VBS.Lys.M. Unfortunately, bitdefender can only quarantine it and it keeps reappearing. Is there any way to remove it from my computer?
That's Windows malware, so it cannot be infecting your Mac. It probably is on your computer as an email attachment. To remove it, see:
