Macbook pro - Please advise HDD upgrade

Hail, my Macbook Pro brothers and sisters!
I know this question has probably been asked a gajillion times, but I'm gonna ask anyway.
I have a Macbook pro ( mid-2012 model ). I tried looking on the internet for a 2 to 4TB internal HDD for upgrading my Macbook pro. Does anyone know where I buy? All I have found in that size are external HDD But I do not want an external drive. I want an internal upgrade. Please advise. Replies are much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, you can clone one drive to another using Disk Utility:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • Macbook or Macbook Pro - Please Advise

    Hi Guys,
I would normally not ask such a trivial question, but I really am in a muddle over this one!
I currently have a Macbook, 1.83Ghz, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD etc and have been using it for iWeb and iPhoto and plan to use photoshop on it when I got the RAM up to 2GB, as I am buying a digital SLR this Christmas.
I currently use an iMac G5 for photoshop as it runs native, and also store all of my music on here.
I have just been offered a Macbook Pro at about £900 ($1500 maybe) and it has 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, 1.83GHz processor and lots more programs installed onto it than my macbook (Aperture, Logic Pro) and I am wondering whether I should make the switch. The Macbook pro is actually being sold to me from a friend who works for a certain computer company, so he just had a brand new trackpad fitted and the keyboard air cleaned just because he can (for free).
What do you guys think? Is the 15" still portable? Would it be a real improvement over the macbook for photo editing and other tasks? Is the matte screen better or just as good as my macbook's glossy one?
Please let me know opinions or views, no matter how large or small as I am in a real pickle!
    Many thanks,
    Martin

some serious quotations from Matrix would be appropriate. Most of all "I can only show you the door. You're the one that has to walk through it"... anyways, if it's not the 2nd generation MacBook Pro with the Core 2 Duo but the first one, and especially with the same processor clock speed, i'd say you're good with the one you already have and upgrading your ram... I mean, the only thing that MacBook Pro has better is the graphics card, which would help you a lot in your photoshop, but i've had MacBook for few days now, the 2Ghz one and can't complain about running anything... the other xtra feature is the illuminated keyboard, but i'd say it's not worth it.. even with the graph. card MacBook has the Photoshop should run just fine, on MBP it would be a lil faster, but thats it. MacBook is great with the 4hrs it can run on battery, on MBP i guess you can make it 2hrs if you try hard... these are the facts... (plus, the MBP has more USBs and some other ports that are more or less for regular user not important)... So to sumarize, If you prefer faster way of handling your pics in Photoshop, and also want to play games smoothly and you are willing to sacrifice the battery time for that, MBP is the choice.... On the other hand, if you prefer portability, MacBook is the one. As I said, MacBook with even 1,5 gb you wanted would be almost as fast as MBP really, so I'd say your choice already lies on your table...

  • Upgrading Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) HDD

    Hi friend,
I want to upgrade my Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) HDD. I need to improve the capacity and speed for my recording music and digital painting. The problem is I don't know what type(s) are suitable or a good place(s) to get one (I live in the UK) I've been looking on amazon.co.uk.
Suggesstions, links and instructions are especially welcome. Thank you.

    Hi,
Not really a suggestion as such, but I have just installed a WD Scorpio Blue 500gb HDD myself. Unfortunately I've been having some issues with it and started a topic on this site to find an answer:

  • How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?

Hey, I know there are other posts on what enclosure you can use and if it's a possibility, but I haven't seen any that tell me how I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, I am wondering if this really is a good idea, using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive? In other words, I would like to get a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and my current HDD is only 500GB.... I am a musician and need a lot of storage for musical purposes. I use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9, Office, and Photoshop.... My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15.4' 2.2ghz quad core i7 8gb RAM. Oh yeah and a mother thing is, I think I should get an enclosure that has a thunderbolt port with usb, what are your thoughts?

How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?
Get an externel enclosure at the same time.
    You can order from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Put the SSD in the externel enclosure and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner,  to clone the internal drive and all it content to the SSD.  Then swap them out.
Always good to have more than one backup.

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with 1T hdd 8GB Ram and ran Maverick without problem...Yosemite installation has me completely frozen, nothing works but the spinning ball...I had to force shutdown last night, and haven't turned it on again...what do you advise?  During installation emptied cache, etc. Backed up using time machine, fortunately.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Brand new Macbook Pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram lagging in the simplest tasks

I received a brand new 13 inch macbook pro (early 2015) with upgraded ram (16 gb) about two weeks ago. I was expecting it to do tasks faster than its predecessors (the macbook pro which came directly before it, which my father owns, and the early 2009 which is now a family computer), but became dissapointed when it began crashing basically as soon as i started using final cut pro, and ever since it has been lagging everywhere else! I have check my activity monitor regulary due to this issue and have noticed "kernel_task" taking a large percentage of CPU (when im not using the computer all that much around 10%) and it uses 1.5gb of ram upwards constantly without fail! I am aware that this is the operating system so i dont really want to fiddle around with it but it does sound a little bit high to me. Originally it was slightly tougher work on final cut that would crash it, hence why i haven't seriously questioned it until now, but currently i cannot even move my curser around without getting the spinning beach ball of death! Please help me!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • HT201475 I am currently running OSX 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade straight to Yosemite and if I can what issues will I face?

I am currently running OSX 10.6.8 on my MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade straight to Yosemite and if I can what issues will I face?

    1. It depends on what Mac model you have. If it's incapable of running Yosemite, installing an intermediate version won't help with that.
    2. You'll lose the ability to run PowerPC software, and some other programs may also be incompatible. If something goes wrong, you might lose data; back your computer up first. There aren't any issues specifically associated with skipping versions.

  • Help only have 14 gb left of 500 gb on MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade to 1Tb?

Help only have 14 gb left of 500 gb on MacBook Pro. Can I upgrade to 1Tb? (I purchased it August 2010) If not any suggestions to increase storage. Majority of my 500 gb is Desktop (assuming that is mainly snow leopard?) pictures and music. Don't really want to delete any of that.

    extremely easy, see ifixit.com  on a 10 scale its a 2
And mende is right, dont consider data archives of important info via wifi, and its slow.   That you "can" doesnt mean you "should"
#1  You can just CLONE the original internal drive, you dont have to "install" anything.
grab carbon copy cloner or superDuper CLONE app.
2 attach target clone drive via USB in an enclosure or HD dock. Firstly format the target (external new) HD or SSD in disk utility in “Mac OS extended journaled”
3 clone internal HD to target HD or SSD (external) [takes about 40 mins depending on size]
    4. Boot ONCE from external (go to sys. preference to boot from external) to TEST the new Clone
5 open bottom (see videos on ifixit or youtube on same) and remove old, install new.
(this video is for a 2012, look at this site for YOUR specific year / model)
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replacing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Hard+ Drive/10378/1
Done    (FIRST TIME after installing, boot will be SLOW,...normal and ignore that).
    Clone APPS
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request.
Currently that's the only information available. I suspect more will be posted as we get closer to launch.

My MacBook Pro mid 2010 was upgraded to mountain lion os x and then my wifi started saying no hardware installed

    Hello Harrisonhcue,
I would be concerned too if I was getting the message "no hardware installed" when trying to use Wi-Fi on my MacBook Pro.  For a message like this, I recommend resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
