MacBook Pro started running slow
Hi. My mac started to work slowly yesterday.
Mac info: MBP Mid 2012, OS X 10.9.2, 16Gb RAM, 500Gb (118Gb free) HDD
It both boots slowly, and have frequent short freezes (either short lag for the active program or longer full-system lag with spinning ball, and no software or window manager reacts at all) during regular workflow - like text printing or scrolling. Also several freezes occurred while in Recovery mode.
Nothing new was installed beforehand, and no system settings changed (explicitly at least).
According to system monitor:
IO operations works in normal threshold, about 5 writes/s, 20 reads/s
CPU load is around 5-15% (85-95% idle), and not corellated with freezes - nothing like load spikes, etc.
RAM about 8Gb from 16Gb is free, and shouldn't be the issue - freezes starts right after fresh boot and browser load.
What I have done:
- SMC reset with Ctrl+Opt+Shift+Power for 10 seconds;
- Booted in Recovery mode and check the hard drive - report didn't show bad sectors or anything;
- SMC reset with unplugging from power cord, removing battery and pressing Power for 5+ seconds;
- Removed several mostly idle items from startup list;
- Removed all files from the desktop just in case;
None of this helps.
What I plan to do:
- make a backup (is TimeMachine good for this?);

So, my MBP is up and running. Problems returned by Friday morning and show no dependency on temperature. My available 90Gb Kingston wasn't even found by Disk Manager (this may be cured in theory if you have compatible external rack), so I've stuck until received new ssd (240Gb Crucial M500).
Then a day of black magic (tried fresh install - and then profile migration which failed due to insufficient disk space), data moving, and finally CCC copy when the installed Toshiba HDD was emptied enough to be cloned did the work, and the system works well in the mean time.
I need to mention this is not because mac works better with SSD - 16Gb ram gives pretty smooth sailing - but because of poor basic components and/or assembly quality. This is my first mac, and while I found Mac OS pretty impressive and handy, the hardware is far from that good, including HDD, leg brake and ripped in 2 places power cord in less than 1.5 years.
Thanks for Vestan for CCC advice, this tool is really handy and fast when the source disk is available, and saved a good amount of time.

You can try resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller;
You can try booting into Safe mode, to see whether it runs just as slowly (and freezes up) then;
You can try disabling your antivirus software, to see if that makes a difference;
You can download, install, and run EtreCheck, and include in your reply the output from an EtreCheck run, which might help identify software which should be uninstalled or updated. -
Problem started after I unintentionally downloaded some adware 4 days ago. After lots of aggressive ads slowed down my browser I downloaded and ran AdwareMedic which seemed to do the job and browser was back to normal. Then, possibly a coincidence, everything on the computer started running slower. I've backed up everything and have run a EtreCheck report.
When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

MacBook Pro Lag, running slow and to much time to start.

Need some help, my MacBook Pro is running slow it takes like 10 - 13 minutes to start, most of the times when I'm going to type something, it doesn't matter which app do I use (Facebook, messages, search on google, it get stuck once in a while and the beach ball appears for a few seconds and then works again, or when I navigate between apps and tried to click on something it takes a while and beach ball comes up I just reinstalled OS X Yosemite again and ran CleanMyMAc and got almost 2 gb deleted, but still the same problem, I use this computer for work on java apps. I ran the EtreCheck and this is the result. Any help on how to kill spotlight? or any suggestions??

My Macbook Pro started running really slow
This week my Macbook Pro started running super slow, taking ages to open programs and giving me the color wheel alllll the time. I've never had problems like this before! I'm not running many applications or doing anything unusual but it's just running extra slow. Once or twice it has also totally gone to sleep while I was in the middle of using it, and I had to wake it back up. It has also been getting really hot and the battery life seems worse...! This is all new, I'm using my computer just as I always have but it suddenly has issues.
The only thing it has been doing for a while is sometimes the screen will go blue - this either corrects itself within a few seconds or if I close my Macbook and then reopen it, the screen is back to normal. This is very rare though and I don't know if it's related to the slowness problem.
What can I do to fix this??

My MacBook Pro started running very slow. I did disk utility/repair and it helped but still very slow. Repair gave me this message, "SUID file 'System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent has been modified and will not be repaired." Any suggestions on this message and/or what else I can do to get my computer back to the way it used to run? Thank you!
It says 199.15 GB free of 499.25 GB. Can I remove the Remote Management program to solve the other unrepairable problem?

2010 Macbook pro is running slow in Mavericks. Do I need more than 4gb ram?
My late 2010 13" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro is running slow since upgrading to Mavericks. I currently only have 4gb of ram. When I boot up It takes quite awhile (nearly 5 minutes or more) before the system is usable. Or it takes almost as long to switch to another user. Once I let it sit, it runs fine. I'm mostly using Safari and possibly MS Word at any given time. I looked at the Activity monitor and I believe I'm using aboiut 3.6 - 3.9gb of physical memory and over 4gb of virtual memory. Swap is using 0 at all times.
Do I need more RAM? Wipe my drive and do a fresh install? I'm reluctant to do the latter, because I don't want to have to reinstall all of my apps (even witha TM backup).

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.

Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck. You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is. MacBook Pro is running slow and All applications getting not responding after every 30 seconds. I have tested by hardware test nothing wrong with hardware. I am worried Because I am totally stuck with my macbook pro Help me Please !!! I have tested by creating guest account and also new account as administrator. same thing happened. apps running. Thanks in ADVANCE !!!First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
Macbook Pro still running slow after reformat
So my Macbook pro, which is about 3-4 years old now, just started running slow after the latest update i did, whichever the latest one was. Possibly a security update or whatever it was. So i decided it was time to reformat and just clear out the stuff on my computer so i erased the HD and reinstalled Snow Leopard. After all that it still lags and is slow. Its slow on things like scrolling down a web page, or opening programs, or when i use expose, it isn't super smooth like it normally is.
My MBP has 4gb of ram and 2.2ghz. I have also tried to repair the disk permissions, but didnt seem to help drastically. Any suggestions?Hi there,

Don't you have any clue from Console logs?

Macbook Pro 2011 - running slow after installing Yosemite
Can anyone help me - my late 2011 Macbook Pro is running very slow since installing Yosemite. Also my Microsoft Office for Excel is not allowing me to type into cells - I can copy and paste but not add new text.
I have run the Etre diagnostic app (as suggested on another thread) and these are the results I get. Can anyone help - or do I have to uninstall Yosemite and how would I do this?

MacBook Pro is running slow. Please help!
Hello,
My MacBook Pro is slow to boot up, slow to open applications, and takes awhile to process actions (like clicking a link or selecting a field in which to type). I have posted an Etresoft snapshot of my system in hopes that perhaps it can help diagnose the problem. If possible, I would like to increase the over all speed of my system. I believe some of the errors are due to failed/corrupt apps that launch on start up, but I am not sure. Any help that this community can offer would be very helpful.

Macbook pro 13inch running slow and losing connection (had it for only a year)
Will someone please help me.. I've only had my mac book pro for a year only and few months ago I started experiencing that my macbook has been running slow lately.. I still have alot of memory in it because I only use it for browsing the net and saving some pictures on it and some videos and it. I have another laptop with me(Toshiba) and it works perfectly fine.. Honestly, I didn't switch to apple to get this kind of issues! Will someone help me please.. I seriously don't want to pay $50 just for them to trouble shoot it.. & I'm not the only one experiencing this problem... Alot of people I know that uses macbook are experiencing the same issues. I hope someone can help me, Thanks!
Post a panic log so that we can see exactly is going on. Be sure that it includes the hardware profile at the bottom of the log.
