MacBook randomly shutting down

My mac will shut down without warning when Im using battery power. Sometimes it won't turn back on until I attach it to the power cord. My battery is always charged when this happens.
Whats wrong with it?!?

Hi there,
I have had battery and random shut down issues as well.
Got my Macbook last July and loved it until about April, then...
It started with the battery light switching from orange to green repeatedly. I tried re-calibrating the battery (which I do every couple of month as instructed in the user manual)and noticed that it would just shut down when the battery got low rather than give me a warning.
I took it in to an apple technician store in Montréal Canada to see what was up, they changed the logic board. They did nothing to the battery. They said it was a logic board problem. I brought my repaired macbook back home and everything was fine for a few days.
I started to experience random shutdowns in the following days, and the battery problem re-appeared. I brought it back in and they replaced the logic board again. They did nothing about the battery. I brought my repaired macbook home and everything was fine for a few days... And then it started random shutting down and doing all sorts of weird battery stuff again.
Is it odd that the apple store just kept replacing the logic board, eventhough it seems quite obvious that this is a battery problem?
Would calling AppleCare be wiser than going back to the technicians (I subscribed to apple care recently as I don't see an close end to the problems that I am having)?

  • MacBook randomly shuts down while watching streaming video

I've been having a problem lately with my MacBook randomly shutting down. I initially thought it was due to overheating which was logical considering I was using my MacBook in bed and the computer was very hot when it would shut off, but I've recently started using a TV-Table top for it to sit on when I'm using it in bed. My MacBook continues to shut down and the computer isn't nearly as hot as it was prior to using the TV-Table top, it is just warm. It's definitely not a battery issue because this happens when I'm using the power source as well. *I think I've noticed that this only happens when I'm in Firefox watching online streaming video on sites such as YouTube.* I never use Safari so I'm not sure if the problem would occur in Safari or not. I tried installing the MacBook SMC Firmware Update v1.1 but it said my computer didn't need it.

I have the same problem, every once in a not-so-blue moon my macbook pro shuts down while streaming video. It only happens when streaming video. Just watched some of the new south park episode, and it shut down on me! It really ticks me off!!!!!

  • MacBook randomly shut down, and won't turn back on

First of all, hello. Secondly, I've got a problem with my MacBook: about half an hour ago, it randomly shut down and when I tried to turn it back on, it didn't. Instead, the backlight kept flickering at the tempo that something inside the computer was "clicking", and the longer I held the power button, the more "clicks" there were. Needless to say, I've tried charging the battery, resetting the SMC, and to no avail: I still can't power it up, even when I don't use my battery. Whether I use it or not, the MacBook still "clicks" during my pressing of the power button and stops "clicking" when I release it. My MacBook is a year old. Can someone help me out here?

Me too. Any resolution? I don't want to take it to my local apple place because they're retards, but according to the info on my warranty that's the only place available. Can't believe they don't have an RMA service direct to Cupertino, what a joke.

  • Macbook randomly shuts down after installing Mountain Lion.

I have a late 2008 Aluminum Macbook; as of last week I have installed Mountain Lion finally and I've come across a rather irritating problem: the laptop keeps randomly shutting down. I've noticed it primarily likes to go down when the battery is at 89%. I've never had battery trouble before, this happens even when the computer is not over-heating, so I'm fairly certain it's not a battery issue. After restarting the computer all the applications I was using are still open and any progression I had made on documents have been saved since the time of the crash.
I'm really at a loss as to what's going on with this. Has anyone experienced something like this or have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

    Hi ppl again :)
I found that screen is not disabled, it is only have a very low brightness. So I begin to wait because I saw that actually installer is still running. Finally, Mas OS was installed and after that I change brightness using keyboard (it didn't worked while installation). Now all is ok. I also tried to reboot and system loaded correctly.
I hope this will help. Unfortunatelly Apple support was unable to help me by a phone call.
    Have a nice day!

  • Macbook randomly shuts down while in use. still has batter power.

About six weeks ago I posted this same problem. It seemed to go away on its own but now has happened again (once today and once just two days ago). I couldn't find any thread that had the same problem as mine.
I have a Macbook that I bought in January, 2007 and I've had very few problems with it. Starting last early spring, after a little over a year, the battery started taking less time to run out. It also occasionally took a longer time to come out of sleep mode, usually only a few extra seconds but a few times it took nearly a minute, and once it was nearly ten minutes). I know I need to replace it, but overall, it isn't drastic. It just runs out maybe 25% faster than it used to (and hasn't really increased since), and rarely has problems with coming out of sleep mode.
Three times now my computer has randomly shut down for no reason while I was doing things. Once in August and twice in the last couple of days. It isn't related to a particular program, as I was never always using the same thing. The last two times (today and the other day. And I think the first time, too, though I can't remember), I had my computer unplugged and it had been being used for some time unplugged (once it was around 50%, once around 40%, when it shut off). When I try to turn it back on, it just shuts off again and only stays on when I plug it in again.
I am UP TO DATE on all programs. Is this a common symptom of a battery dying? I'm wondering if maybe the gauge that tells me my battery power is screwed up somehow and isn't giving me accurate numbers (though when this happens, the lights on the bottom still appear as if to say I have battery power left).
Basically I'm wondering if this is a simple battery problem I can solve by buying a new one or if there is a more serious problem with my computer. IS THIS NORMAL? Please help. I love my Macbook.

Mine does that. Around 40-45% battery life it just dies.

  • My MacBook randomly shuts down.

    Hi there:
My 13" MacBook (2009?) keeps shutting down at random intervals, but very frequently.
I followed instructions to reset SMC - no change
The battery is fully charged, and retains it's charge.
The Energy save modes are at 15 mins computer/display sleep
The odd thing is, if i keep moving the mouse/trackpad or keep typing, the laptop stays functioning. As soon as I stop working or turn my back, it shuts itself down.
My next step is to start looking for Gremlins!
Any support or advice you can provide would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Jo

Try using the Console app for diagnosing the random shut down issue.
Go to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Open the Console app then follow the instructions here >  Mac OS X: Using Console to Troubleshoot Problems

  • MacBook random shut down (again)

My MacBook has been randomly shutting down for the last week, regularly but unpredictably. It's a number of years old at this point, but has rarely given me problems. The battery is long since dead, so I have had to have it constantly plugged in. I've tested with other adapter cords, but the shut-downs still occur. I anticipate it must have something to do with overheating? Any insight for how I can fix this issue, or whether doing so is even worthwhile?

  • Guess how many times my macbook randomly shut down on me today.

Well I am working on getting a replacement unit after 2 "repairs". How many times do you think my macbook has shut down on me.

No I have never had my MacBook shut off and I bought it the day it came out.
That's insane that it has shut down 17 times in one day though.
    I would go crazy!!!
You should take it to an Apple store if you can so you don't have to wait as long for Apple Care to fix it.
    Bummer man...

  • Macbook randomly shuts down

For the past week or so my Macbook has been shutting down randomly. As far as I can tell it's not something I'm doing, but it's completely random. It's happened while only using iChat, and sometimes while running Firefox. I don't think it's due to overheating, either, as one time it happened almost immediately after I turned it on from being off all night. Sometimes it happens several hours after I've woken my macbook up from sleep mode, sometimes less than a minute after. It has even shut down while running Vista on Bootcamp if I remember correctly.
Any ideas? Hopefully it's something I can fix from home as I've already been to the Apple store in the past 2 weeks to have the wrist rest and keyboard replaced... heh.

I actually have this problem, when I'm running on battery power, and it gets down to around 40%, it randomly will just shut itself down. You can power it back up, and it will tell you that it has about 35% battery left, and then that will wear down and you'll get the low battery notice like you're supposed to.
    VERY disconcerting.

  • MacBook randomly shut down and isn't turning on anymore.

Hi. So yesterday my mid-2012 MacBook Pro died on me. It was on my bed charging and just quit. Now, it definitely wasn't overheated because when it died the bottom of the laptop was very cool. When I plug in my charger, I only see a dim green light and it flickers from orange to green real fast. I know it's not my chargers fault because it still charges other MacBooks besides mine. I was also attempting to charge my phone at the time with a very weird charger.. But I'd charged my phone with the same charger the previous night using my MacBook and there were no issues.
I have a feeling that my battery is kaput because recently the battery life had been dying quickly that's why I always had it on charge.
I just hope it's not the motherboard because I don't have AppleCare and my 1 year warranty is up. I would like some advice on what it could be. I'm gonna try to find a nearby apple store because there are none near me-- but idk how long that will take.
I've called the apple hotline and we tried the SMC restart but that didn't even help at all.
I'm hoping someone could give me a bit of advice as to what this may be because I'm a college student and I bed my laptop to start working ASAP because of all the work I have on it. And I also don't have a real big budget. Help?

I would like some advice on what it could be.
Hard to tell unless we can examine your computer ourselves.  Could be any number of things.
I'm gonna try to find a nearby apple store because there are none near me
Apple Stores are not the only places that repair Macs - AASP's Outside of the USA
How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP)
but idk how long that will take.
Ask the repair techs.  Only they would know after they find out what is really wrong.

  • Macbook randomly shut down

    Hi everyone!
I just recently got my Nov 2007 macbook back from having the motherboard replaced due to my computer not being able to turn on properly. Today for the first time, while watching some videos on Youtube, my computer just decided to turn off. It had 98% battery charge and also was plugged in at the time. I am hoping that everything is okay with the computer and that I haven't gotten myself a bad computer. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated as to how to resolve this issue. Thanks!

Update: Called Apple Care and they claim that the battery is going bad. They didn't even consider that there might be something wrong with the computer.
The girl on the phone looked at the battery charge count and said that it was high.. so she suggested getting a new (140$) battery.
    So we'll have to see.
Perhaps the battery will do the trick. I'll post some updates once that's done.

  • My macbook randomly shuts down (2.4 intel core 2 duo 2 gb ram)

my macbook turns off in the middle of use. when the macbook is powered on the fan starts up full speed and stays that way for a while.
then 15 mins later is turn itself off in one second. what could be the problem.
    thanks

This seems to be an obvious over-heating issue.
How old is this? I'm guessing it's a bit old and perhaps has the main fan obstructed with dust, etc.
Could you give us more info please? Also try to get some cpu temp apps if you don't already have one and let us know how hot it's getting.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Shuts down...SMC Reset only temporarily

I have a somewhat concerning problem with my 2011 Macbook Pro (15").
It started two nights ago, didn't happen yesterday, and happened again today.  It has also fried two iPhone chargers.  Here's the story:
On Sunday night, my Macbook randomly shut down.  Wouldn't restart, nor would it even charge (the LED on the charger didn't even come on).  So after trying everything I could (namely, PRAM, SMC, etc.), I finally took the bottom of the computer off, unplugged the battery internally, did a hard reset of the SMC, and everything was back up and running.  That night, I got a strange error when I plugged my iPhone in to charge:  USB is using too much power and has been disabled, or something along those lines.  Weird--but my computer didn't shut down again, so I shrugged it off.
Fast forward to tonight--all worked fine until I plugged a NEW iphone charger into the computer.  This same cord worked fine this afternoon, but I got the "USB drawing too much power" message and then nothing.  The computer shut off, had to unscrew the bottom and do another hard reset, and here I am.
I've tried to figure out just what might have caused this.  I did buy a charger from my university's bookstore that I do not think was Apple branded.  Is it possible that it somehow fried my battery? Or do I have a bigger issue - motherboard, RAM, etc.? The computer (when I get it to finally power back up) works fine and no files have been lost, so I don't think it's harddrive related.
If anyone can shed some light on this problem, please let me know.  I've searched for a long time to find a problem similar to mine and haven't found any answers other than the generic "Reset SMC," or "Reset PRAM."  I know how to and have done both of these things.  Do I need a new battery? I ordered a charger directly from Apple and have only used it since the first shut down.

There's only a limited amount of things you can do on a laptop repair-wise: tiny and tightly packed components are a far cry from yesteryear's huge boxes with individual removables.
Is the USB error coming in regardless of which USB slot you use? Have you reproduced this error with other USB devices that draw a charging current or significant power?
If the problem is indeed that USB is drawing too much power, it could be a short in the USB circuitry, or it could be a short with your phone. Try charging someone else's iPhone. The concept with current is that it's "pushed by voltage" and "drawn by a resistance in a closed circuit." If the voltage is too high, or if the resistance is too low (short circuit), then you will end up where you're at.
Also, it could be helpful to review your system log. In spotlight, write "terminal" then type in the shell prompt (without the quotes) "cp /var/log/system.log ~" this will put a file on your desktop that you can open with a text viewer, search for the word "USB" towards the end of the file, and see what you can make of it. Post anything here that seems suspicious. Warning: it'll be cryptic and hard to read!
    So,
    - Try different USB slots on your computer
    - Try different USB power-drawing devices
    - Try different iPhones or iPods
    - Review the system log and post any suspicious lines

  • Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, random shut-downs running Mavericks,

Since the last two Mavericks OS updates, beginning April 21st, I am experiencing random shut-downs on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, any suggestions? I've seen posts regarding the known logic board issue, I had no problem before the last two OS updates. Seems to be related to sleep/wake. Running 10.9.2

Hi Andy, would you take more look at this log. . . random shut down happened again, look at 11:54 am and before, I re-booted at 12:02. Had suspected my external monitor at the office, laptop does not do this at home, ran for three straight days, no issues. No monitor connected today as a test. Plugged in at the office for just over three hours and bam. could be the battery thing, will try AHT or Apple Diagnostics, could it be a Time Machine related issue? Thanks in advance.
