I own Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro 4.5) which I have installed on my Power Book G4. Now I own the Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.26 GHz and I can't install Final Cut Pro 4.5. Instead I get the message: "This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing. "Power Macintosh G4/350 megahertz, or faster. AGP graphics card."
But it is important for me to work with Final Cut Pro 4.5 on my new MacPro.
Even if I would upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 it says at the system requirement that it needs or doesn't work with An AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors).
How do I get about this issue?

You don't have an AGP graphics card - you have a PCI Express card which is better. Your system is compatible with Final Cut Studio 2 and upgrading would be the recommended option.

I am submitting a 12 minute film to festivals and need to convert it from 14GB to around 2GB for best quality results in order to upload it to IMDB so that it could be streamed. I use FinalCut Pro 7 but the compression/export settings for the file are proving to be tricky.

What settings do I choose to have the file be closest to 2GB and have the audio and video synced perfectly, maintaining the good quality of footage shot on Red?

Codecs: Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), Linear PCM, Timecode
Color profile: HD (1-1-1)
Duration: 11:59
Audio Channels: 2
When I converted it to DVD: I got a DVD .m2v file around 465MB, it that the highest quality I can get for a DVD version?
Also, When I set the settings to 1280 x 720 it resulted in a file size of 275.4MB, when I wanted it to be around 2GB

Export a full quality file....FILE>EXPORT>Quicktime Movie. Self contained, sequence settings.
Take that file into COMPRESSOR. Look for the Quicktime 7 Streaming options...choose the H.264 LAN preset. SUBMIT.

I am not familiar with FinalCut, but to get images out of LR, you have to export them. In the Library, select the images you want to export, and click Export.
The export dialog presents you with a number of options, one of them is Metadata, where you can select All Metadata.

FinalCut Pro 5.1.2 - droped frames - MacBook Pro

Hello, every time I try to record from my Sony TRV900 DV camcorder via FireWire to my new MacBook Pro 17" (Core 2 Duo) FinalCut Pro 5.1.2 slows down and stops the recording and brings an error message: encountered dropped frames.
Same FireWire cable and camcorder works fine with FinalCut Pro 5.1.2 on my old Mac G4.
What can I do?

Welcome to the forums.
Are you capturing to an external drive that is NOT your main system drive? If you are capturing to your system drive, most likely you will encounter dropped frames. Your system drive is busy doing things like managing the system, so it will access system resources and stop the capture. Sometimes this happens a lot, sometimes very infrequently. But it is best not to capture to your system drive.
And while I would recommend a firewire drive, your computer has only one firewire bus and often this too leads to dropped frames, but not all the time. Happens for some, not for others. You can solve this by getting a PCIexpress firewire adapter to add a firewire bus, OR...the another option is to get a CalDigit eSATA drive and PCIexpress card.

If you're looking for improved performance, you should move your events and projects to an external FW800 or faster drive.
The FCP X application itself should reside in your Applications folder on your system drive.
If you're talking about backing up to another drive, I use a cloning application (SuperDuper) to clone my working drive to my backup drive two or three times a day.
If you want to install FCP X on another computer, simply download it again from the App Store (using the same Apple ID you used to purchase the app).

I am presently using FinalCut Pro HD v4.5 and compressor 1.2.1. The only upgrade opportunity I have found requires me to have a FCP v5 serial number. Does someone know a path that would me to upgrade easily?

What do you mean "Leave them my laptop again"? do you mean you have had it worked on before? for the same problem or a different one?
You need to take it in to Apple ASAP. No matter how long they have it, you want it fixed and fixed correctly.

FinalCut Pro 5 on OS10.5

I teach video and web design. We have licenses for FinalCut Pro (which we've been running on OS10.4). We just got in 8 new iMacs. But we are unable to log & capture footage (we use Maxtor external hard drives and upload via firewire from Canon ZR-model cameras).
Anyone have experience with this? An experienced video/finalcut teacher advised me to revert to OS10.4.

Are you using 5.0 or 5.1? As far as I'm aware, 5.1 is compatible but 5.0 isn't.
Unfortunately Apple's disc exchange program for 5.0 > 5.1 has ended so you would have to buy it on eBay or something, at which point it might be easier to just upgrade to FCS 2.
Btw, it is generally not a good idea to downgrade machines to an older operating system than they shipped with. The Tiger installer will probably refuse to install on those machines but you may be able to do it by taking out the new machine's hard drive, putting it in an older iMac, installing Tiger on it, and then putting it back into the new one again. Of course, the success of that all depends on the age of your older iMacs.

I canot change an .img (video) file to a .mov file. It ends in .img no other endings. It plays on my computer but not on my blue Ray player TV. It came from Finalcut Pro as a home movie. Any help?

FinalCut pro crashes upon start.

Tried re-installing even after deleting existing prog but it doesn't help.
It happens when getting the video effects n the err msg says that it might have something to with a some Ozone plugin.
FinalCut v is 6.0.1 and runs (or refuses to) on a macbook pro with os 10.5.8
come to think of it, did a quick cleanup with mcKeeper as a tryout not long b4. Can it have deleted some file finalCut needs? which in that case?? If that's the case finalCut is the only prog affected ...

Finalcut pro studio or finalcut express

I've the new mac mini : 1.5 Ghz, Video 64 Mo and 512 Mo of Ram and a macway firewiredrive. Can I use it to make a video from 1-2 hours with final cut ? Would like to use final cut pro studio 5 or finalcut express hd. What is the best for such config. Is it possible to do it ? How do u think is time compared to a powerbook g4 1.67 ?

Nick is right on both points.
FCE is the way to go.
You can always bump yourself up to more robust hardware and pro in the future. Hands-on FCE use is the best way I know of to get experience in the "Final Cut" family. Once you are proficient in FCE then the move to pro and faster hardware will be smooth.
But I will share that I do wedding videos professionally and I find that FCE actually meets most of my needs at this level.
Maybe when I start my independent movie I may need to switch, but for now I am all set.

SSD w/FinalCut Pro/Express

Hello. I'm up to get a new MBPro. I need to do some video editing when I travel. I was planning to get a MBPro with the full amount of RAM: 8Gig with the 512MB video card. Now I'm stuck with the choice of a SSD or a standard 7200rpm SataDrive. Is there a down fall of using SSDs in video production? Anyone using SSDs with FinalCut?
I do plan to do burn discs, and I'm hearing that SSDs have a slower write speed. True?

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro with a 7200RPM drive, and a 2009 Macbook Pro with the SSD. If you have the budget, get the SSD. All of the statements above are correct, but not entirely analyzed, probably because the posters don't have the new SSD in their computer. I was lucky enough to have my company pay for my computer, so I got the SSD. It's way better. Yes, all apps load faster. The computer starts faster. I have less issues with waking from sleep mode. I NEVER overhear, as there are less moving parts in the computer. Acutally, Photoshop and Motion are the only apps that get me close to hot, as the graphics card still gets hot. But there is no added heat from the HD. Also, it's SILENT. When you are accessing files from the system drive, watching movies, whatever, there is no noise. It's quite enjoyable. Looking at the new cameras for both consumer and pro, solid state is the way we are going. More reliable in the long run. Greater read and write cycles, not damaged by shock, low heat, small footprint... there are a lot of benefits that are not FCP specific, but just make the computer perform easier. If you got it, flaunt it... get the SSD and brag that you had the cool toy before everyone else!

FinalCut Pro: lots of Sound Problems...

i have several problems with sound in Final Cut Pro 6.0.2, i will try and list them all:
1: I had two mp3 soundfiles in my sequence that were on different tracks, and also had a different sample rate (44.1) than than the sequenz (48KHz). So i had to render them, but final cut would not render everything only one part of the overlapping region. The rest stayed unrendered, so i selected the soundfile again and hit "command-r". Now FCP rendered the other part of the region, that was not rendered before, but to my surprise the parts that were rendered fine the first time, now were not renderd at all! Any idea what i can do against that bug. I just cannot render everything...
2. Again i was working in a sequenz and pulled in the soundeffect "Impact Metal.caf" from the SoundtrackPro library. Had to render it, everything fine so far, kept working. But after a while the soundeffect got muted. It was still there in the timeline, but it made no sound. Even deleting the Audio Renderfiles and rendering it again did not work. Any way around this bug?
3. Normal sequenz, with video and sound. Also one sourround effect with surround i guess because it has 6tracks, also from soundtrack Pro. I want to solo one track of the sequence, but its not possible, why not?
4. I load an mp3 file into the sequence that has 44.1 khz as opposed to the 48Khz of the sequence. i render it, everthing is fine. later i grab the and of the soundfile and make it longer. So I have to render the rest of it too. Fine i do it, but now the beggining of the soundfile is different, as if i would have slided it to a different position, which i didnt... Any idea?
I am getting a bit crazy around here, to many bugs..

Do not use MP3s in FCP...and audio at 44.1k will also be a no no...so to have BOTH is a big no no. Convert ALL of your MP3 files to AIFF 48k 16bit stereo files.

To get music into FCP, it needs to be an AIFF file at 48khz, 16 bit stereo. So if you want a song from a CD, you go into the iTunes Preferences, click on ADVANCED and set this up under the IMPORTING tab:
AIFF
Sample Rate - 48.000 kHz
Sample size - 16 bit
Channels - Stereo
If you have an mp3 that you want to use, then you can convert it thru iTunes as well. As long as this is chosen as your import option, when you select a clip and click on the ADVANCED menu, CONVERT TO AIFF will be an option.
If the piece of music you want to use is something you purchased thru iTunes, I'm afraid I can't help you there. There are copywrite issues that prevent files from being converted into the format that FCP can recognize.
