MacPro vs Aperture

I have had my MP for about 6 weeks now. I am running the base 2.66 with 3GB of RAM, 2 of which are from OWC. Runs OK but I would have expected a bigger WOW factor coming from a Dual QuickSilver 1GB with 1.25GB of RAM. I do run all of Creative Suite 2 and Office. All of which are huge Rosetta memory hogs. System was just about unusable with 1GB of RAM. I did download the 1.5 version of Aperture demo. I noticed that with all this running my ITunes would break up and even when I quit Aperture, it still would affect iTunes. I tried Activity Monitor to see what processes were running and it would not even launch. Something based around Aperture was taking almost all processor power even after Apperture was shut-down. Dock jumped and open apps were unusable. I had to restart to clear the problem.

System was just about unusable with 1GB of RAM.
I think the concensus here is that 1 gig is extremely inadequate especially when Rosetta is added to the equation.
I've noticed and others have mentioned similar findings and that is rosetta doubles the memory requirements. That is if an application ran nicely at 2 gig on a g5, then it will run nicely on a MacPro with 4 gig thanks to rosetta.
Overall you'll see a large increase in speed if you go beyond 2 gig. While Aperture relies heavily on your GPU, I suspect have so little memory is dragging down performance.
I have 2 gig (wished it were 4), my gpu is the X1900xt and aperture's performance is faster then what I was experiencing on my G5. Now I was able to use Aperture and photoshop (at the same time) on my G5 with 2 gig with little effect on performance, with only 2 gig on my MP I choose not too. In a pinch I can and will but I hear the drive swapping quite a bit.

  • MacPro for Aperture

    Hi,
    I have in shipment MacPro - 2,66 Hz, 4GB RAM, X1900XT, 2x500 GB HDD
What are your experinces with such set-up running Aperture? My Library
is about 25 K pictures. So I expect much improvement.

I use exactly the same configuration for one month now with a 23" Apple screen. It's much much faster than on my Mac Book Pro and start to be satisfactory, but not yet as fluid and responsive as one would expect. I still have that colored wheel on some operations. What I don't measure is wether the acceleration has been coming from Aperture 1.5 or from the Mac Pro ? They both arrrived at the same time ... I'm really eager to see a v. 2 !

  • Sapphire HD 7950 on a 2009 MacPro - Aperture Performance

    Hi,
Read a few palces here and in other forums but no definite word on the increase performance of the Sapphire HD 7950 over the ATI Radeon HD 4870 on a MacPro 2009. I wonder if someone that made the upgrade would mind comenting. I made a few upgrade to my current tower (SSD drives, 32RAM and USB3 card) so I can wait a couple more years to get a new MacPro. I wonder if it is worth the graphic card upgrade. This machine is for Aperture mostly (iMovie, Pixelmator, iWork, Web etc) and I don't play any games.
    Best regards
    Raf

Thank you for your answer but I have read all these topics before and I didn't find the information about the resolution supported with this graphic card on OSX (with the display port)...
Yes this card is able to be Up to 3840 x 2160 resolution at 60Htz, but only on windows because apple driver can not support this resolution for this card (for now).
I just want to know if I can connect a monitor with a resolution of 3440 x 1440px at 60Htz on mini Dipslay Port 1.2 with the last version of OSX 10.9.4.
If I ask this question on apple support, it's because I didn't find answers on the web and Sapphire support told me to ask my question here...
I will be sad to buy this monitor if I can not use it on OSX...
Thank you very much and sorry to be insistent.
    Alexis.

  • How to migrate Aperture library from PowerMac to MacPro

I copied my Aperture library from my old PowerMac G5 (10.5.8) to my new MacPro (10.6.2) but Aperture on the MacPro could not display any of the images included in the the library. It properly displayes the previews but instead of an image in the main window it always shows the info unsupported image format. Only the images that are references to files outside the library can be displayed.
So what is the proper way to move an Aperture library from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac?
    Thanks in advance, Martin

If it's a managed library you can just copy it: It's that easy.
If it's a referenced library it's a lot trickier, as you can move the library and not the images.
Which do you have? It's probably easiest in the case of a referenced library to consolidate it, move it, and then move it back to referenced, if your library is of a moderate size.
But there are details on how to do this in the Aperture documentation; I suggest you have a read for the best practices on this.

  • Macpro config for Aperture

    Hi guys
I have the very first macpro ever released, the old 2 x dual core 2.66ghz xeon 5150's and 16gb ram. I have the nvidia 8800gt which i bought a while back when my old ati 1900xt card died.
    I'm running 2 x 30" screens.
I'm thinking now is the time where a new one would give a bit of speed boost.
Can anyone suggest a ideal config for Aperture? My cameras are 1Ds mk3's and my aperture library is around 1.4tb at the moment.
I'm thinking the (obscenely priced) 2.93 8 core with 16gb ram from transintl.com and the radeon 4870.
I have lots of hard drives already I can put in it.
    thanks

Your existing box (the same as mine) is still very good. Personally I would wait to replace it; at least until we see real-world Aperture performance on the new boxes for a month or two to help determine optimum configuration.
The CPU clock upgrades above the 2.26 8-core are ridiculously expensive, probably not cost effective. Wait until the end of the year and I bet we will see price drop and/or speed bump.
The Radeon 4870 is alleged to perhaps work on our 2006 Macs. Wait and see if it does. Barefeats.com will have tests.
My guess is that careful RAID array of fast hard drives & Library configuration (Referenced Masters Library perhaps?) might help performance on the existing box a great deal.
Wait too for memory tests before you add RAM to a 2009 MP. Early reports suggest groups of 6 rather than 8 DIMMs. Again, barefeats.com will have tests.

  • Aperture an old MacPro and a new iMac

I migrated my Aperture 3.4.4 to my new system.  Aperture wants my serial numbers.  I have the recent one but not the original.  How can I proceed?
    Jim Turner

I have the recent one but not the original.  How can I proceed?
You mean, you have the Aperture 3 serial number, but not Aperture 2 and 1?
Then contact Apple for a replacement serial number, see:
    Pro Application Replacement Serial Numbers
You will need to provide a "Proof of Purchase", as explained in the support article.

  • Major slowdown causing Aperture to become unusable on MacPro

I posted this message back in September 08, but the thread has been archived so I cannot reply to it. But the issue is on-going.
I'm at my wits end with Aperture on my desktop Mac (Mac Pro, 2 x 2.66 Ghz Duel Core, 9GB Ram, Radeon X1900 512Mb video card).
My library is currently running at over 115,000 managed images divided into projects each around 100-200 images, these are organised into folders for each month of the year, residing in folders for each year. Images pre-2006 are JPEG and the rest, around 31,000, are RAW files.
When I go into a project and try to edit a caption, select an images, make an adjustment, or just 'Select All' I get the spinning beachball of death, sometimes for up to 5 minuets. Even just clicking on an image to select it in browser mode results in a SBBoD for 20-30 seconds. Adjustments are painful and frustrating. This happens with no other apps running and without Aperture doing any background tasks.
My library of managed images used to resides on a dedicated 1Tb drive installed in an internal bay of the Mac Pro, vaulted to a third drive. The was rather full so recently U have RAID-ed two drives together to provide more storage and now I have 476GB free, about 1/3 of the drives.
There is quite obviously something wrong, as once in a while I can edit a project fairly swiftly, making adjustments, using the sliders fluidly and use full-screen mode etc. However, most of the time it is as slow as described.
It has got to the point when I am editing on my Mac Book Pro (which only contains a few projects, around 500 RAW files) and then transferring the finished project to my Mac Pro for archiving purposes. In fact I have recently exported a project of 1800 RAW files to my laptop to edit, and when finished re-imported to the Mac Pro library as just selecting just a few images to export was taking me half an hour.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be casing the colossal slowdowns and any tips for fixing it? I have already rebuilt the library and moved it to a drive with more free storage.
I'd like to hear from users who have over 100k managed RAW images in their libraries and hear what performance is like on certain systems. I'm convinced that Aperture is capable of running fast and smoothly with this size of archive and that I have a more than powerful set-up.

There is quite obviously something wrong
We agree that something is wrong. The problem is that with heaviest-graphics work almost anything or any combination of things can compromise performance as described. So...
    • What version of Aperture?
    • What are the files (e.g. mostly 20 MB Nikon NEFs or whatever)?
    • What do you observe long term watching Activity Monitor?
    • What exactly are your hard drive setups including how full, what types of arrays, what lives on what drives, what connectivity, etc.?
    • What routine maintenance have you done on the box since it was new? Not just what you did last week, what was done 2007/2008? Have you ever "migrated" an install?
    • What kinds of apps are on the box? Any free ones? Plug-ins? Any bargain buys that potentially could have been pirate versions carrying malware? Any other users with access to the box?
    • Does this happen after a reboot with only Aperture open and after all hard drives are for sure up and fully running? A common problem is one or more hard drives spinning down, perhaps intermittently. That would exactly describe your symptoms. Note also that some small apps and most plug-ins get installed to auto-launch, so verify that none are running.
IMO running a Managed-Masters-Library with 100k image files probably requires a perfect RAID array setup for the Library running perfectly along with additional arrays to properly back it all up. Personally I use a RAID0 Library arrayed on two internal drives but use a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives to keep Library size reasonable. (Note this para is just an observation, we have a lot more to discuss in order to troubleshoot)
Buy Disk Warrior (be sure to get the exact version appropriate for your OS) and run it if you have not yet done so.
Try creating and running as a new user.
    Trash Preferences and restart.
Repair Permissions immediately before and immediately after any installation that asks for the admin password.
Although repairing Permissions is not a fix for poor performance, many of us on the Photoshop forums do find that religiously repairing Permissions immediately before and immediately after every installation of any kind helps keep a graphics box running more smoothly. In any event repairing Permissions does no harm, only good.
If we do not come to a solution I will lend you a new unused HD2600 XT graphics card to try in the event your 1900 card is flaky (which is not uncommon). I bought it but it requires OS 10.5.x and I still use 10.4.11.

  • My MacPro crashes every time, while I'm installing Aperture 3.4

With updating Aperture 3.3 on the MacAppStore my computer shuts down in the last minute (the package was installing).
I tried it again and it was the same experience. So I deleted Aperture and tried it again but it won't work. Now I don't have the App Aperture on my Computer but when I open the MacAppStore there is shown to continue with updating Aperture. If I click on that, the whole package will be downloaded and in the last minute I get the same result.
I tried it with an older Version but it's the same

The installer crashes and causes a kernel panic. This does not look like an Aperture problem but more likely a system issue.
The first thing to try: Restart  the system, if you have not done son and reset the PRAM: see
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 When to reset NVRAM or PRAM
Also, you have some non-standard kernel extensions installed, for example "Paralles": Is this a Mt. Lion compatible version? Try to start into safe-boot mode and to run the installer in safe-boot mode:

  • Aperture just got 16 times faster on my MacPro!

    Hi everyone,
I had been rather disappointed about the Aperture speed until 15 minutes ago. A friend pointed me in the direction of this app:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Expansion Slot Utility.app
That came up with this grim information:
    http://homepage.mac.com/refsvik/X1900_before.png
Upon changing the card from slot 2 to 1, this happened:
    http://homepage.mac.com/refsvik/X1900_after.png
    ...and suddenly Aperture screams!
A heap of thanks to Matt for letting me know, and please make sure you check your settings and slot-placement of your GPU-card.
    Best,
    Kjell Are

Thanks for this information, but I can't get this utility to run. I gave myself the required permissions, but no luck. How did you get it to run?

  • How do I get custom book themes to appear in Aperture?

I want to create two custom book themes in Aperture - A4 Landscape and A4 Portrait - so that I can print them on A4 photo paper. However, after creating the custom themes, they do not appear in the custom theme list which is preventing me from creating an A4 sized book. I closed and restarted Aperture and I have also closed and restarted my MacBook.
My Aperture version is 3.5.1 and I am running Mac OS X 10.9.1.
Folders for the two custom themes I have created do appear in Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes.

Folders for the two custom themes I have created do appear in Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes.
    Schof,
I will try your suggestion of creating a new Aperture library and let you know what happens.
If a new library does not fix it,  there is probably a permissions problem with your user library, or a problem with the "Books Theme" folder.
I'd try to trash the "Books Theme" folder:
    Quit Aperture.
    Delete your "Users/MacPro/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Book Themes".
    Log off and on again.
    Create a new Custom Book.
Can you now see it in the "Themes" drop-down menu?
If that does not help, trash the preferences as well:
    Users/MacPro/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
and log off and on again, or restart the system.

  • Nvidia 8800 GT not the best for Aperture use?

I've been reading from barefeats ( http://barefeats.com/harper10.html ) that the 8800 GT is not the best graphics card for Aperture. Actually I don't think they actually tested Aperture, but Motion 3. The Nvidia is a more expensive option than the ATIs, yet it would be worse for Aperture? Has someone specifically benchmarked Aperture 2 (not another pro app, and no synthetic tests of core image) with the 8800 GT against the other cards? Would Apple update Aperture to make it take better advantage of the 8800 GT's strengths (when available in a system)? I hope so. I already got the Nvidia, and am waiting to get a Mac Pro in the summer.

Here's my prelim findings (as posted in another thread). Will come back with more detailed comments after I have a chance to test some more:

I've just put one in my first gen mac pro, too. I can confirm a great deal of improvement over the stock 7300 gt. My prob was when an image had been straightened, cropped etc if I then attempted edge sharpening it was just awful - beachballs in abundance, crappy panning, slower than Capture NX. Now, though, it is fast and pleasant to use. That's the good news. The bad news is either:
    1. Apple put such a puny graphics card in a Mac Pro (sic) in the first place (although it copes with everything except its own Pro photo software)
    2. Apple wrote such idiosyncratic software (leaning on the on-graphics card memory so much) that meant Mac Pro (sic) machines hardly more than a year old couldn't cope without a new graphics card when running Apple's own pro photo software. That and the 7300 is still on the "recommended" list of cards for running Aperture 2.
    Ho and, indeed, hum.
    Cheers

  • Can't open Aperture in Leopard

    Hi,
I cannot open Aperture now that I have installed Leopard. I have the latest versions on a G5 Dual. The icon bounces then I get a dialogue that says, "Aperture quit unexpectedly do you want to report...". I have tried using a different user...same thing. I have restarted and repaired permissions. I also have Photoshop CS4 which works great and iPhoto is fine. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Rob

Same here. I cannot launch Aperture. Icon bounces about 6 times in the dock, then nothing. The startup window just stays there until I force quit.
I, too, have repaired permissions, thrown away aperture plist (preferences) restarted my MacPro. My lastest attempt was a reinstall of Aperture.
    Still nothing.
I know its not totally a Leopard thing as I have been able to launch it on occasion. I have not been able to pinpoint why it works every once in a while (about once every dozen or so attempts)
This has me puzzled. Its also very irritating.
    Anyone?

  • Few 5DmkII RAW files do not open with Aperture, but OK with other software

Hi, I have two RAW files which I cannot import with Apple Aperture. The files open fine with Canon Digital Photo Professional, Raw Photo Processor and dcraw (and with various programs on my Windows 7 laptop) and I'm able to create TIFF files from the RAW files with every other software.
    Detail about the files:
    A. they are two first frames of burst (used auto bracketing, which takes 3 images in burst mode, to create HDR image)
    B. there is nothing strange in the files, they are normal RAW files and file size is normal as well (other 28.4MB and 32.7MB)
    C. both files process OK in above mentioned softwares and there are no blocks missing from created TIFF images, also preview JPG in the RAW file is OK
    D. Mac OS X Quick view (press spacebar in Finder) and Preview do show these two RAW images well (I assume they use the embedded JPG image)
I have installed all the updates available in "Apple icon" -> "Software update..." function. Therefore I have Apple Aperture version 3.0.2. Computer is MacPro:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 12 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
    SMC Version (system): 1.25f4
How I can submit the files for Apple to create fix? I searched for Apple Aperture support but there is only this forum, no email address or anything. Do they read this forum?

Some clarifications and answers to your questions:
    First to Tony Gay:
I try the feedback later today even they claim "Please know that while we do read these submissions, we cannot guarantee a personalized response.", which is original reason why I'm why I wrote this question here. The url you provided did not work but this should:
    http://www.apple.com/support/feedback
This is not relevant to sRAW files, I did not change the between camera taking automated bracketed shots the image format for 2 shots to sRAW and took 3rd with RAW, that is not even possible.
I have copied the images from card to hard drive, not trying to read from the card itself. However now you mention tried also from card = exactly same result. Tried desktop (different HD) and external USB and external eSata, all same result.
Get info doesn't show anything wierd for the images. All other 192 RAWs from same shoot were imported with exact same methodology (as well as 60000 images before that).
    Then to gosuk2:
There is no HDR setting in camera, I took the images FOR HDR, but did not use any specific setting, just used 1 1/3 stop bracketing and 2 second times when camera automatically takes 1 1/3 underexposed, correct exposure and 1 1/3 overexposed image (the order of images can naturally be changed via custom function in camera). All this is unrelevant since I shoot quite often HDR with this method (=more than 500 images each month) this way and they have always been fine before these two images.
I see the files in import panel and I the don't use import dublicates setting so that doesn't affect the situation (why it would, Aperture things files are broken).
Again HDR cannot be combined in 5DmkII, it's just automatically shoot 3 bracketed shots.
No I don't get same result no matter what I do, it's just these two files. My other ~5000 HDR bracketed RAWs are importing fine as well as all burst/shots taken in continous shooting mode.
I'm very aware how stacking of images works, but I do not understand relevance to this issue. I can not import the images at all to Apple Aperture, after importing all images Aperture displays dialog saying that following files could not be imported to Aperture, then displays list with both of these files in the list and gives possibility to locate the files in Finder.
I have used Aperture since version 1 and I have 70000 images imported successfully to Aperture. Earlier I have seen this dialog "Aperture could not import image" only after hard drive/card failure. However then images cannot be used in Canon's DPP (Digital Photo Professional) or any other RAW software - now the problem ONLY EXISTS in Aperture all other RAW converters are able to open and process SUCCESSFULLY these images.
So I'm not whining that Aperture is not good, but if it starts to work only part of the images in future and I have to process rest of the images with Canon DPP (that program is really lousy on usability standpoint) then I'm not so happy with Aperture anymore.
Will report here if I get any comments back from Apple through the Feebback tool.

  • How do I consolidate multiple iPhoto libraries on multiple machines into a single Aperture libraries?

    Hullo all,
I run a smallish studio at a University, and I have inherited multiple Macs (2 Powerbooks, 2 Mac Pros) running multiple OS (2 on Mavericks, 2 on 10.7) and multiple versions of iPhoto. These have been used for photo and video work over the years, and each has its own stash of content, project files, etc. In an effort to organize, I wish to consolidate all the various iPhoto and Aperture libraries into a single library. I have a 16TB Pegasis RAID available via Thunderbolt to hold the material. Can anyone tell me the best way to go about this? My background is 20 years production work in film and video and I am rather new to still photo work and as such, do not know much about maintaining archives etc.
If I read correctly from other questions, I need to update all versions of iPhoto to be the same, establish the library on the Pegasus, then export all the files to that library? Is this correct? I am not sure I can update all computers to the current version (one is a late 2009 MacPro) Is there any easier way to do it? I am happy to purchase software if that makes the process easier.
    Cheers! Thanks for any info!

iPhoto does not support to merge libraries into one.
The utility  iPhoto Library Manager can merge libraries -
    download here: iPhoto Library Manager
If you have access to Aperture, you can also use it to merge your libraries (see: Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries), but if you need to buy a tool, iPhoto Library Manager would be the more economic solution, and it is a must-have with iPhoto anyway.

  • How can i use an aperture library on a 2009 white macbook?

I made a set of 6 Aperture libraries on my MacPro Westmere using latest version. These open on my MP in iPhoto as well.
A colleague needs these libraries (organisation related photo categories).
They would not open on his white 2009 MacBook -- OS 10.8 with 4GB RAM and oodles of disk space -- with his version of iPhoto - 9.1.
Downloaded latest version 9.4.1 -- Installer says that OS 10.8.2 is required.
Downloaded and installed version 9.3.1 -- claims to be compatible with Aperture library.
File will not open -- Incompatible ProKit message.
Software update does not show any system updates available.
    Downloaded 10.8.2
Tried to install -- failed -- Not compatible with this volume
    Sigh (repeat x10)
Am I missing something -- I have read lots of slightly similar but different installation issues with 10.8.2 -- all very dispiriting.

    Thanks again
    but...
As I said in my post...
    Downloaded 10.8.2
Tried to install -- failed -- Not compatible with this volume
I should have said the 10.8.2 Combo
As I said, it would not update -- it reported that the update was incompatible with this volume!
Yet the minimum specs for 10.8 (now running the machine only installed two weeks ago) and 10.8.2 have not changed.
I might add that I have been working with Macs from day 1 and on Apple ][s from almost day 1.
