Mail 1.3.11 won't save sent mail

I have a Mac PPC G4 OS 10.3.9 and Mail 1.3.11. Have used Mail for years, no problems, but now it won't save sent mail, whether it's an e-mail I've generated and sent or a reply. I've gotten rid of most old mail, thinking boxes may be "overstuffed" but no change. I've set up rules to have mail placed in sent, but that hasn't worked. Ideas?

Found the problem. Out of curiousity, I opened Safari Preferences and before I could even think, the first thing I noticed was that for some reason my default browser was indicated as "Desktop DF" (?) whatever that might be (hopefully not some kind of spyware).
So needless to say, I just changed it back to Safari and now all my Mail links open up the way they should.

  • Mail won't save sent messages

I just got this computer- a hand me down from my boyfriend- and I am having trouble adjusting to Mail. It does not save the mail that I write, and in fact tells me so every time I start writing a new mail message. The preferences are enabled to save sent mail-- but the computer also tells me there's an error every time i start up the computer.
Can anyone tell me what I can do to remedy this? What is going on?

    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

This whole thing is very confusing to me and I'm sorry if I seem vague. This new computer is fabulous- but I'm used to my ancient blue G3 and Entourage.
I believe that my account is an IMAP account. I followed your directions, substituting "IMAP" for "POP." I sent a sample email, and a pop down menu did not appear and warn me that my mail could not be saved. However, it is not in the saved messages folder.
Just to clarify, on the left of the Mail screen there is an Inbox, with smaller subfolders: Drafts, Sent & Trash. These folders mirror what is on my account online. Under this is a little paper airplane icon that says Sent. This continues to be empty, no matter what I do. The preferences are set to Never delete sent messages. Also, if I hit "save as draft," I get a message that says, "The message could not be saved."
Would trashing the Norton stuff help? I'm not sure if that is related to this question.
    Thanks!

  • Mail doesn't save sent mail on one of my email accounts.....

Mail doesn't save sent mail on one of my email accounts. I have several accounts, but on one of them it just doesn't save any mail I send. Is there a hidden setting I've missed somewhere? I did delete the account and then reset it, but it took out all of my emails to that address so I'm loathe to do that again!

I'm lucky enough to have two Macs running OS X 10.9 next to each other, both using the same network, and sharing a common Exchange mail server. My corporate machine (an first gen' Aluminium iMac) has both Outlook and Mail installed. My personal machine (a 13" MacBook Air) has only Mail installed.
Neither install of Mail is guarenteed to write sent messages to the Exchange Sent folder (it might happen, it might not). Both write perfectly to other common mail servers (e.g. GMail). Outlook writes perfectly to the Exchange server, but generally functions less effectively as a mail client than Apple Mail.
The failure to write to the Exchange server only happened after the upgrade.
    It's quite frustrating.

  • IPhone 4 does not save sent mail?

    My 3Gs always did.
Now when I send a message from the iPhone 4, it is not in my "sent mail" folder. 100% of the time, sent mail isn't there.
I use IMAP, and mail sent from my Macbooks does show up in the sent mail folder on the iPhone & all other computers. Same incoming & outgoing servers are specified on the iPhone & Macbooks.
Why does any mail sent from the iPhone not show up in the sent mail folder?

Thanks to Weaverdrew. I could fix the problem with the guidelines provided by Weaversrew.
The iPhone 4 & iPhone 5 users may adopt the following line of action :
It's simple but really confusing, surprising, insensible & ridiculous. This may be the flaw or mistake in iOS 4 & 5.
Go to the advance settings of your email settings & choose the option - "on the server" instead of "on my iPhone" for all your junk, trash & sent folders individually & your iPhone gets synchronised with the server & thereafter your deleted mails get moved to the trash folder of your server & also the mails sent are shown in your sent folder.

  • Way to save Sent mail locally using IMAP?

I have my Mail accounts setup using IMAP and a my Sent messages are set to be deleted off the server every week so I don't exceed storage limits (I have a lot of mail with attachments). I have selected "keep copies of all messages for offline viewing" in the Mail preferences but after the week, the Sent mail is gone from both the server and my local computer. Is there a way I can ensure the sent messages are never deleted locally? I guess this would apply to my inboxes too.

you can create a local mailbox in "on my mac" section and move or copy your sent messages there after 6 days. same with the inbox. with a little work you can automate this procedure so you don't have to do it by hand. the easiest for the inbox is to make a rule that copies all incoming messages to a local mailbox as soon as they arrive. built-in Mail rules only work with incoming messages though. to deal with Sent messages you can use Mail Acton
    http://www.indev.ca/MailActOn.html
it lets you create mail rules for sent messages.

  • Settings won't save Yahoo mail after adding second verification?

My Yahoo email was hacked.   Most of the emails in my Yahoo account were sent a spam mail from my Yahoo account.
As advised, I changed my password and added some extra security - a second verification so no one can login to my account without additional security questions or verification code.
No problem adding email back on my android phone.   But my iPad and I can't figure it out.
I signed out of yahoo mail on iPad.   Deleted the account in settings.   Verified it was gone.
Added the account back in settings, or tried to.   I get the message server unavailable.   It won't save the new password.   It won't trigger second verification.
I went through Safari and I can login to Yahoo mail on Safari.
I am also able to add the account to the yahoo mail app and use it.   But my iPad is constantly asking for the password.
I'm hoping someone else has had a similar problem and solved it.

I hope I have a self answering question.... Thanks to the "more like this" side bar.
the problem comes from your second sign-in verification, go to your setting in your yahoo account then go to Edit your account info, then go to Manage your app password a new page come out, go to the Manage your app passwords box and write " my iphone mail" then press generate password, this will give you a long password this password you gonna use it ones in your iphone and ones in your ipad.
then go to your iphone open setting then go to your emails, contacts, calender. Then press yahoo account and go to your yahoo account information, erase the old password and enter the new long password and done.
hope work for you guys, did work for me.

  • Can't save drafts, doesn't save sent mail thru imap account

I learned what an imap account was when I signed up for my .Mac account. I like the idea of sent mail being saved on the server and shared to all my computers. It saves duplication of effort between the two of us working here. So, I've recently had my web guy switch my old POP account to an imap account. But there's problems.
Whenever I begin composing an email to be sent through my new imap account, I get a message that says, "This email cannot be saved." I can compose and send the email through that account, I just can't save it to my draft folder. When I hit the "Save as Draft" button, it seems to try to save. The "Save as Draft" button goes gray for a couple of seconds but, afterward, I can't find any trace of a saved draft. There's not even a Draft "mailbox" or subfolder under the main "Drafts" heading. Also, once the letter is sent, it doesn't show up in a sent mail folder, I suppose because, again, there isn't a sent mail subfolder for that account.
My web guy showed me how in his Thunderbird mail preferences he's asked to choose a folder in which his drafts and sent mail will be saved. I can't find a question like that in the Mac Mail preferences. Even if I were asked where I want the mails to be saved, those folders would have to be on the imap server for the contents to be shared between computers, right?
Two side notes, there is an inbox for this imap account, just no "Sent" or "Draft" folders and second, I'm on OS X 10.4.10, Mac Mail Version 2.1 (752/752.2).
Anyway, does anyone have any idea what's going on and how it can be fixed?
    TIA,
    Peter

Yes! Brilliant! When I followed the first half of your instruction (this account requires INBOX to be typed in Preferences, etc.) the imap server did indeed create the draft folder and when I sent the email it created a sent mail folder. Just what I wanted! Thank you. I'm so grateful!
OK, now a couple more questions based on things that seem to have started happening as a result of following the first instruction.
Now, instead of not saving drafts, it's saving two, three or four. Just as an experiment, I tried writing a letter to be sent through Mac.com. As I wrote the letter a draft appeared in the proper draft folder. When I changed the subject or added a recipient, that draft was amended to reflect my changes. In the new imap draft folder a new draft was added each time I made a change. They all went away once I sent the message so I see that as a small problem.
Second, since I saw the draft and sent mail folders appear, the inbox for that account is acting oddly. The little whirling icon that appears when incoming messages are being checked shows up as expected next to each box (subfolder). In the case of the account where the changes were made, the whirling icon freezes and does not display the number of new messages until I actually click on that subfolder. One other little issue that might be related; mail that appears in the new imap inbox doesn't always appear in the overall inbox (atop all the subfolder inboxes). If I click on that inbox subfolder, the mail will appear.
Third question/comment, the second half of your email suggested that if I succeeded in getting email to "save messages on the server, but maybe in a mailbox different from where you want them to be. To fix that, select the desired folder in Mail and choose the appropriate option from Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For. " Although it seems to be saving in the right folders I looked at the "Use this mailbox for" command and the choices are grayed out no matter which mailbox I choose, whether it's a subfolder mailbox, a main mailbox or a mailbox folder I've created. I don't care but I'm curious. Is that odd?
Thanks so much for your help so far! This is just great!!!

  • "save sent  mail on server" does not work

    Hello,
When I send a Mail by MAIL via my IMAP account MAIL failed to save the sent mail on the server. However I can see the folder where usually sent mails are stored I have send by web mail. In the preferences I positively checked the "save mail on server" box and chose to store sent mails forever
I also cannot save email drafts. I get always an error message that the mail cannot be saved.
I have a similar issue that deleted mails are not moved to the "trash" folder of my mail account.
    Thanks & Regards, Joe

That command is mentioned in the “Renaming, moving, or deleting a mailbox” article, for example, but you wouldn’t find it searching for a solution to your problem in Mail Help amongst other reasons because it’s not a solution, it’s a workaround. Doing that shouldn’t be necessary for Mail to be able to store messages on the server, only for telling it to use a mailbox different from the one it would use by default.
Mail should be able to create any necessary mailboxes on the server or realize that they’re already there. If it doesn’t, it’s because there is something amiss, the problem usually being that the server uses a NAMESPACE feature that Mail doesn’t handle properly and that causes server-stored mailboxes to appear as subfolders of the account’s Inbox, even though they really aren’t — see “Can't create folders, only subfolders of INBOX” in the Courier FAQ, for example. Those IMAP accounts require INBOX to be put in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix for Mail to handle them properly.

  • How can I get mail not to save sent mail on iphone?

I use yahoo mail for my mail acct. In yahoo mail I have the sent mail folder turned off. I do not want to save my sent messages. This used to work on my Itouch but now with my new Iphone it is saving the sent messages. How can I get this to stop? I have been through all the settings and can't figure it out. You may email me at [email protected] Thanks for your help!

Not sure how this used to work on your iPod Touch since there is no setting for an email account preferences to not save sent messages. With an IMAP account, there is an option to store sent messages on the server, or locally on the iPhone. There is no do not save sent messages setting, and the same for the email account preferences with a POP account.

  • Does the mail program on IMAC save sent mail in the sent box?

I recently got an IMAC and began using the OS-X mail program. AFter sending an email, i looked for it in the "sent folder" and did not see anything. Does the program save sent emails in that folder?

    It is supposed to.
Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • Mail.03 will download received mail from Gmai uising pop but not sent mail

After upgrading to Leonard, I decided to reconfigure my gmail with Mail.03 (hopping to eliminate the non sound issue when new mail arrives. Prior to this Gmail downloaded all received and sent mail. After, only received mail is downloaded but sent mail is No not. (Nor can I successfully send mail using Mail 0.3 through gmail.

    Hi Hector.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-” or “Mac-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Mail not being able to read inbox/sent mail??

    Hey guys,
I have a system that is running OS X 10.3.9 with Mail: 1.3.11 and it seems to constantly have issues reading the inbox and sent mail folders.
When I launch mail, it shows that I have messages in my inbox and my sent mail but when I go to click on the headers, nothing shows up in the preview screen. Rebuilding my mailboxes and also trying to re-import them into a different box does not help. When I try importing them, the file is not recognizable by the mail importer.
When I restore these mailboxes from back up, mail is able to read them for a few minutes, then it goes right back to the same issue.
Has anyone encountered this and know how to address it or can even tell me what it is?

    Hello,
I've same problem on Mac OS 10.2 system. Only in sent mail box.
Sent mail box appear empty but state bar says 782 messages.
Clicking on a ghost message show selection bar. Double click on subject and subject of message appears, same operation on date, sender...
    Inbox, junk mail work fine.
Other problem : Mail always crash down when I quit application (Application does not respond).
Sure I've repaired files permission, delete preference file, rebuild mail boxes but problem still here.
    Someone can help me ?

  • Drafts won't save in mail

I'm using Apple Mail with an IMAP service and whenever I try to save a draft I get an error that tells me that the draft cannot be saved. Do any of you know how to solve this problem?
I'm thinking maybe it has to do with my mail server (I'm guessing IMAP would try to save the draft to the server's online storage instead of just on my HDD)

I seemed to fix my own problem. I set Mail to save the drafts on my hard drive. I guess it was just the mail server not accepting the drafts
