Mail displaying recipient not sender

Hi Mac Mail is showing the recipient of the email (invariably me ) in list of emails the middle pane rather than the sender. How do I chnage it to show the sender other than revert to Classic layout. Seems a silly way of laying out essential summary of list of emails sent to me.
Maybe I am being dumb!

Hi thomas bananus!
I believe you are referring to the Message Attributes in Mail for Mountain Lion. More info about this can be found in the following article:

After trying lots I found now in 'Airport Utility is 'unable to detect any airport wireless devises.....'
There is no provider to be seen in airport utility and only 'rescan' is an option with no results...
even so I am connected and can browse the net receive mail etc. and the outgoing 'mail server' is set to the internet provider I am connected to.
Can you enlighten me what can I do I need to use my e-mail program urgently !!!
    Thanks for your help

I'm not sure what "IPS wireless" is, but unless you have an Apple Wi-Fi base station (such as a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Express), AirPort Utility won't see anything.
You might try defining a new SMTP server to see if that will work any better.

It sounds like someone has your email login info and is using it to send spam. Any time you think your account might have been compromised, it's a good idea to change your password and secret question/answer to something new and complex, and run a virus scan.
The SMTP blocks are usually in place for 24 hours, so 24 hours after you stop the intruder, you should be able to send again.

  • My (postage stamp icon) mail program will not send outgoing mail - only receives, what's up with that?

My (postage stamp icon) mail program will not send outgoing mail - only receives mail.
Says the outgoing mail server is wrong, but Comcast says it's right - what's up with that?
Is there a way to reload the standard (postage stamp icon) mail program?

Clearly there's something wrong with the configuration. Reverting to some other mail application (whatever the 'standard' one is...) won't help.
What does the Connection Doctor (Mail -> Window -> Connection Doctor) have to say about it?
Chances are your username/password for your SMTP server are incorrect.

Mail.app will not send (att) mail. Web mail and Thunderbird can send.

I'm having the exact same problem on my iMac. I can receive email from imap.mail.yahoo.com, but cannot receive from smtp.mail.yahoo.com. I have not changed these settings in years and as of a few days ago they stopped working. These settings work fine on my iPhone and iPad.
    So far I have:
    -Deleted accounts and reestablished them
-Deleted the Mail preference file ->com.apple.mail.plist

  • Mail clients will not send password

I posted a question in the eMac discussion group, but realize now that I should have posted it here. So I hope I shall be forgiven for posting it again here.
I have three different mail clients: Apple Mail, SeaMonkey, MS Entourage. I recently had some trouble unconnected with mail that necessitated my switching my computer off by its power switch. Thereafter none of the three mail clients would download mail, all saying that sending my password did not succeed.
The password itself is correct. The e-mail system of my ISP (www.btinternet.com) is web-based, and I have no problem displaying my incoming mail in any of my browsers (Safari, SeaMonkey, Firefox), so this shows that my password is accepted by my ISP.
I therefore did the following: I ran DiskWarrior to rebuild the hard disk directory; I used Onyx to check the S.M.A.R.T. status, to correct permissions and to reset the LaunchServices database; I reset the PRAM.
None of these actions solved the problem. Finally I reset the Open Firmware. Hey presto, this worked.
By an unlucky chance, a few days later there was a brief power cut in my part of town, and once again none of my mail clients would send my password and download mail. So I went through all the above procedures again, with the addition that I used Onyx to verify my startup volume before going on to permissions and the LaunchServices database.
This time nothing, not even resetting Open Firmware, has restored my mail clients' downloading capacities.
What can I do now? I should be immensely grateful for any advice.

Yes, I understand (and understood) that, too, Kurt188. But when I referred to being able to read my mail in my browser, I was not referring to logging in manually (by typing my password). When I open my web-mail in my browser, my password is recognized by my ISP automatically. This must be achieved by software in my computer; otherwise anyone who knows my e-mail address would be able to read my mail without using a password just by going to btinternet.com. Thus my password must be stored in my computer and automatically sent to btinternet every time I go to my mail page on btinternet. That, surely, is a similar process to my mail client sending my password to btinternet.
Admittedly, the password that my mail client sends is stored somewhere associated with that mail client, because when I set up my account in the mail client I had to type my password into the account-setting page (and I had to do the same with each of my backup mail clients). To that extent it is a different process. But the point is that both the web-mail (browser) process and the mail-client process originate in my computer, and both terminate in my ISP recognizing my password (or not!).
The only thing I can think of to account for my problem other than a fault in my software is the supposition that my browsers encode my password differently (perhaps by their particular kinds of encryption) than my mail clients, and that my ISP temporarily recognized all the three browsers' encodings but not the encodings created by each of my three mail clients. It doesn't sound likely to me; but if this is what you meant, I am prepared to bow to superior knowledge and accept your explanation.

  • Some received an e-mail i did not send! have i been hacked? what do i do?

Someone just asked if I sent an e-mail to her...and a lot of other people that are in my address list were sent it as well. I DID NOT send it! What do I do? Have I been hacked? Help please.
    Thank you!

Was it some kind of spam?
One possibility is that someone has access to your account. The best thing to do about that is immediately change your password.
Another possibility is that there is malware on your computer manipulating it. This article lists a variety of tools you can use to supplement your regular security software in checking for and removing malware: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
Another possibility is that at some point, someone got a copy of your address book, but they are sending the messages from a different account. Unfortunately, it is easy for spammers to "forge" your name and email address as the sender of a message.
Or maybe it's a coincidence and spammers are randomly mixing and matching from and to addresses to see if they can slip past the filters?
I think without more information from the recipient(s), it is difficult to know which of these is the case. For example, the recipients could compare the message headers for a real message and a spam message and compare the servers the messages passed through. Spam sent by automated means from elsewhere on the internet usually travels through a different set of servers between the sender and recipient. That's what I would expect to find. If they are identical, then I would be more concerned about malware or an intruder on your account.

  • IPhone 4 Mail receiving but not sending

Hi all ... I have seen a couple of other posts on this topic but my situation seems a little different, so here goes for a new thread.
I have just set up my new iPhone 4 32GB, including my POP/SMTP email account. Receiving mail worked instantly but I have not yet managed to get Sending mail to work.
First time I set up the account I did not enter any username or password for the SMTP server as these are indicated as "optional". Kept getting a message saying that iPhone could not connect to the SMTP server, so went back in and added the username and password (same as POP server). iPhone then took an age to connect but seemed to be sending mail (displayed a "Sending mail" message + progress bar at the bottom of the screen). However sending mail systematically failed, with the unsent messages remaining in the Outbox.
Tried deleting and reinstalling the account - this time added the username and password for the SMTP account at the outset. Am now getting the "connection to the SMTP server failed" messages again !!!
Any further suggestions as to what I might try to troubleshoot this would be much appreciated ... this is a basic POP/SMTP mail account that I have been using for many years without issues.
As you'll have gathered my technical know how is near-zero!
    many thanks in advance

Hello Dave. I'm not far from you - I live in Fleet.
I think the difference between your situation and mine is that I'm using an email service from a cable provider (Virgin Media) whereas yours is from Google (Gmail). Virgin Media appear to have put restrictions on using their SMTP server via other means than their own network. Gmail's network is the internet, and no restrictions for accessing them via a 3rd party like a telco network.
I've actually fixed my problem by setting up a gmail account in order to use the gmail smtp server for outgoing mail!
However I've also posted the queries on the virgin media website and I'll post any responses here as well.

  • PSE 9 Adobe E‑mail Service do not send to some mail adresses

    Background:
My 64 bit Win 7 home premium PC do not have any mail client and I'm using only the IE brower for mailing [my mail is hosted by one.com] . So for PE sharing (mail)  i'm using the organizer mail client Adobe E‑mail Service.  In organizers sharing preferences I'm suposed to enter my own mailadress for verification of the mailing adress for Adobe E-mail service.
    The issue:
If I enter my own private mailadress  [email protected] there is no mail send out.
My mail host provider, one.com, has verified that there is no record in their mailserver logs of any incomming mail what so ever = no mail has succesfully been send by the Adobe organizer mail client.
AND IF I use my work mail adress [email protected] in the preferences and as mail reciever every thing works fine.
I also tested having [email protected]  noted in sharing preferences, but having my priviate mailadress [email protected] only as a mail reciever. Well same negative result. There is no registred mail in the mail server logs at all coming from .[email protected] or send to [email protected]
    My questions
    1. Is there any PE logs to look at i the PC
    2. How do I make Adobe support to seriusly take on this issue. The somewhat disapointing answer the give me are like "not our fault, ask someone else. case closed"
    3. I have once, non-PE elsewhere, experienced a SW that did not recognice a '[email protected]' adress as a mailingaddress. Anyone know where to find the list over what type of mailadresses PE recognizes?

I hope you receive some replies as I have a very similiar situation. I wish I could help but obviously I cannot.
    \Good luck!

  • HT1277 Mac Mail receiving but not sending. smtp not working

I have been using Mac Mail with my Gmail account without any trouble for the last few years and just for the last 2-3 weeks I cannot send any e-mails. I am receiving without any problems, but no matter what I do it won't send, not even an e-mail to myself. My Calendar is set up to send my notifications and those won't even go. I have verified my settings (time and time again), I deleted and reset-up my account, in the last two weeks I have done everything I can, but can't figure it out so I am getting kind of desperate. I am sure that it is something to do with smtp but all of my settings for that are right too (in accordance to the Gmail and Apple sites). What I have done is just read and responded to my e-mails (when I do it offline) and then I have to log into my gmail account and copy/paste ALL of my e-mails manually, which I am sure you can imagine is extremely inefficient. Thank you to anyone who can help!
Running Mac OS X 10.6.8 with Mail 4.5 and accessing Gmail

Here is a screen shot too, not that it says much, but this is what I always get, no matter the settings (since they are all correct! OH! I guess I should also mention that I currently live in Africa and that I am using my Blackberry Bold as a modem to get internet on my computer, but I have been doing that since last year and never had a problem until now.
Also, I did just very recently (as in a couple weeks ago), insert a new modem to my computer to try a second method of getting the internet on my computer other than my phone, and it didn't really work so I am back to just the phone again... would that simple installation have anything to do with Mail not sending e-mail? I can't imagine that it would, But I have seen stranger things.

  • Mail, receiving but not sending

Mail is playing up after I installed a new Snow Leopard system. I can receive but not send. As far as I can tell I have all the right settings. My (don't tell anyone) PC laptop works perfectly. Can anyone tell me where I should be looking?

Open Mail and look in Mail menu item "Window". In the drop-down select "Connection Doctor" and before checking in Connection Doctor look at the bottom of it's pane and show the read out print, then click on check server connection. This way you can see what the server is telling your Mac. Maybe you didn't set up the SMTP server settings correctly.

  • Can receive mail but can not send mail

With IMAP AT&T Account I can receive emails with no problem but can not send out emails.  AT&T says it is a Mac Mail issue because I can send and receive with no problem on the internet.
Can someone please help me with the settings that should be put into the Outgoing mail server SMTP settings.  It always shows the server as 'Offline'.
    Thanks

They (AT&T) needs to provide you with the proper Outgoing Mail Server setting.

  • Mail recieving but not sending on Yahoo account!

    Hi,
I have had my Yahoo email set up and running fine through Mail for the last year or so. However for the last couple of days I can receive email's but not send them.
I have three yahoo accounts and it's the same on all three. I've tested the connection settings and they're all fine. I've even deleted the accounts from Mail and set them up again from scratch.
    I get the following error:
*'Sending the message content to the server failed.*
*Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.'*
    Anyone else getting this problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Steve

In order to prevent spam and address spoofing, some mail systems are now being set to disallow 'relay'
That is, sending to another host via an intermediate account.
Example: Your mail account is [email protected]
You are popping mail from [email protected] You get a message at your yahoo address from [email protected]
When you try to reply to the yahoo message from your host.com account, you are trying to use host.com as an intermediate to yahoo.com, which will in turn send the reply to [email protected]
you are thus asking host.com to relay a message from [email protected] to [email protected]
In reality, host.com has no idea who [email protected] is.
So it refuses to allow an unknown user from a foreign system to use it's mail server to send to a 3rd mail server. This is considered relay, and it's a favorite tactic for spammers.
That may be why you are told to "select a different outgoing server"
