I don't know what is the meaning?? SPAM-Attack?
What can I do to stop it?
It is also impossible to start ServerAdmins maintenance-tasks...
Thank you for your assistance,

Hi again!
I tried to do a backup of my mailsystem with "mailbfr -b".
The backup started fine and gave me a lost of messages like this and after almost an hour mailbfr quit with an error message:

mailbfr was aborted. The process was NOT completed successfully.
Starting Mail Services
Cyrus IMAP successfully started.
I still can't access the ServerAdmin maintenance section of mail.
Until now the mail-service seems to work fine but every few seconds I get messages in the mail.log like posted in my first posting.
Should I give mailbfr a try to repair the maildatabase?
Greetings from Germany,
Peter.

  • Blank Mail Logs - Postfix - PHP

I need a really simple solution but all the instructions I've found so far involve setting up extra stuff I don't need. So I'm hoping someone can give me a quick bit of info.
Basically I have a site that sends email notifications at times (using PHP mail() function).
I have Postfix installed which I assume is handling the sending of these emails.
But no logs are being made. All the /var/log/mail.log files are completely blank 0Kb files.
I need them to log each email sent out by the server with a time. I enabled the php mail() logging function in php.ini but that doesn't include timestamping. So I need the fuller logs Postfix can do.
But the instructions I've found all want to set up full blown email servers. I just want some timestamped logging.
    Can anyone help me out?

In fact most of my log files seem to be empty. Any idea why??

  • E-mail logging over SSL on ASA?

    Hi There,
Is there a way to do e-mail logging using SSL/TLS on a Cisco ASA? SMTP seems straight forward, however, I can't do SMTP (Port 25 TCP) outbound as my ISP has it blocked.
    Thanks in advance!
    Matt

    Hi Donny,
I am not using an ESA, I cannot seem to find any Cisco documentation on how to configure e-mail logging on an ASA using SSL/TLS.  Does this documentaion exist? I am not having inspect issues, my pcaps show no 465/587 TCP traffic leaving my outside interface when a logging event occurs.  When I configure e-mail logging using SMTP I see port 25 TCP traffic leaving, so I must not be configuring it correctly for SSL/TLS.
    Thanks,
    Matt

What is likely the cause?  How can I fix/stop it?
These Macs have ssh locked down with hosts.allow and sshd_config configured to only only certain subnets and users so I don't think they've compromised via ssh.
    Thanks

Update: It turns out those postdrop errors in the log were actually only 3 errors that kept repeating. I ended up killing those three processes since SMTP was working properly and I figured that those must be processes that were stuck and for some reason wouldn't end. After that, no more repeat errors in the log, but I am getting messages about:
Warning: database /etc/aliases.db is older than source file /etc/aliases
I issued sudo postmap aliases, but got the error: postmap: fatal: open aliases: No such file or directory.
    Any ideas?

  • Mail: postfix/pipe : warning: pipe_command_write: write time limit ..

Anyone run into the following situation:
    1) "postfix/pipe : warning: pipecommandwrite: write time limit exceeded" error messages start showing up in system.log
    2) The postfix queue starts filling up with mail to be delivered for a particular user. User reports that mail is not being delivered.
    3) The user has a hung IMAPd process that refuses to die. kill -9 <pid> does not work for the process, and a hard reset of the server is needed (push the button since shutdown hangs due to the hung imapd process) to get things back in order. Also, a reconstruct of the users mailbox seems to smooth things out after the reboot.
The postfix/pipe message seems to indicate that postfix is unable to deliver the mail, which is why it's sitting in the queue. I'm guessing that the hung IMAPd process has locked out the users mailbox, or something of that nature.
Right now, I have a script that tails the system.log, grep's for these messages and sends me an email with the contents of the postfix queue. This helps alert me to the situation, but it would be nice to either fix it or get a better idea of what's going on.
The user usually affected by this is using Mail.app on 10.4.11.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Flatrack

YESSSSS!!! I am having this same problem on a server that I'm administering. Talk about incredibly frustrating. I'm seeing the exact same behavior:
One user's IMAP process gets hung up and gradually takes down the entire service. No amount of Force Quitting or "kill"-ing will work...that process just keeps on staying hung up. And soft restarting is ineffective.
In my case, it is the same user every time. I had it happen once in January (while I was out of town, of course), then not again until 3-4 times this past Thursday-Saturday (yep, the server knew I was out of town again). End user told me today that he'd had to force quit Mail several times recently...during the same timeframe as the hangups. I have done some major cleaning up, overhauling, and mailbfr-ing of this user's account, and will be watching it like a hawk for some time to come, but the main problem I see is:
*SO WHAT* if a lone user's account gets corrupted?!?! Or if the end user jerks the rug out from under Mail by Force Quitting?!?! In NO WAY should that cause such a problem that the server won't even soft restart or allow that IMAP process to be killed. This is causing me a large Mac OS X Server credibility headache right now. My tech liaison and I have been gradually transitioning from PC + Exchange Server to Mac + Leopard Server, and having a single user's fouled up email account bring down the whole works is NOT acceptable.
What can we do to further fix/debug/repair this? Of course the user account can be rebuilt, but this should not be taking the entire IMAP service down and then not allowing the server to restart or kill off the process.

  • 10.7 SMTP Mail Logs send email address- Assign Postmaster?

How do you assign the SMTP mail log email address? I received an email this morning from another System Administrator (who previously administered this server), that he received the following message (I should be receiving these notifications, not him. To add: I was already the "Alert Email Address." Is there another location, where the SA's email address is set?):

I am having the same problem. I also can't send anything with attachments at all. Mail Just hangs there endlessly. This is a HUGE problem for me right now, and I don't feel like using entourage mail because it is not really reliable either. Does anyone know how to get a direct hold of Mac Telephone Support or engineering? I need to fix this problem like right now. We need to go back one level of code. Mr. Logic... This is my third day since I downloaded this code revision too, so please let me know what you find out, and I will do the same for you. I should have known better than to install this code without reading up on the issues and fixes.

Since downloading the 10.4.7 update I've experienced
the mail problem wherein emails can't be sent to the
smtp server. I've read all the discussions on all
the various fora, and tried all the fixes (e.g.
downloading the combo update instead, trashing mail
preferences, repairing permissions, setting up mail
again from scratch, looking for the SOCKS proxy,
resetting the PRAM, etc. etc. etc.) but all to no
    avail.
Note that in my case the SOCKS proxy checkbox was
NEVER ticked/checked and so I couldn't uncheck it
(which was the fix that seems to have worked for most
    people).
Anyway... last night I thought would try setting the
SOCKS proxy checkbox myself, so that I could then
    uncheck it. (you never know!)
However, when doing this I noticed that any changes I
made to the proxy checkboxes in the Network system
    preference panel ARE NOT SAVED.
i.e. If I tick one or more of them and Apply the
changes, then exit the Network Preferences panel, the
relaunch the Network Preferences panel, they are all
    UNCHECKED again.
Is this related to my Mail problem? Any clues?
This is my 3rd day without the ability to send email
from the Mail client in 10.4.7. Not good.
    Any help/suggestions appreciated.
    Mr Logic.

  • Postfix/smtp[8437] Operation timed out can't send mail to 1 address

server 10.4.5 running mail, filesharing and website.
The mail server has been up for months working fawlessly. We have one address (domain) where we can't send mail, and users at that address can't send us mail.
All other mail functions on both ends seem to be functioning fine.
They seem to be running exchange as a mail server, but i don't have other details from their side. DNS/MX records all look like you would expect.
    This has me stumped.
i turned debug level loging on and got the following smtp message written to the log when i tried to mail to an address at that domain.
    Feb 23 20:45:10 fileserver postfix/smtp[8437]: 775401AFD61: to=<[email protected]>, relay=none, delay=31, status=deferred (connect to anhc-mail.anhc.org[24.237.2.213]: Operation timed out)

    Yes, good luck to them.
    relay=none
    doesn't look so good.
Of course, a successful outgoing message should look something more like:
    Apr 8 11:41:05 server postfix/smtp[2300]: F1D4D3B8A27: to=<[email protected]>, relay=mail.someobfuscatedserver.com[6x.20x.148.1x6], delay=5, status=sent (250 2.0.0 k38FYfDS023848 Message accepted for delivery)
I take it you can send to any/all other mail addresses (servers) ?
    Here's a thought:
Some time ago, I had to edit the helo_checks config of postfix, for a windows mailserver because their AntiVirus was horribly mangling their outgoing mail, helo-ing as <fix-your-dns>.local
Point being that .local anything is not a viable tld for anything in the public realm, and certainly won't work with the rest of the world in terms of DNS.
That might be the work of Norton's break-it-for-you addon for Windows Exchange mailservers, not sure.
    Please post the output of:
    postconf -n
    on your server,
and the mail.log file content when they try to send you an email (confirm via telephone and watch for it).

  • Passing Mail through postfix to EIMS

    Hello,
I need help in trying to configure my OS X 10.4 server with email services. I am running EIMS (Eudora Internet Mail Server) 3.2 for email services and would like to continue to do so. My problem is that I have some php scripts that need to send email. PHP assumes you are using the sendmail command or equivalent. How do I configure postfix to just pass the email from php to EIMS? Currently postfix realizes it is trying to send mail to the same server and considers it a mail loop and refuses to forward the email to EIMS. (I have also tried the EIMS command line tool baqut it doesn't support the -t option so it doesn't work.)
I would appreciate any advice you have.
    - Brent

    Hello,
I have to revisit this topic now because I have changed my server to use open directory and in the process, I had to change the hostname of my server from shenzhenparty to shenzhenparty.com. Now postfix is able to detect a mail loop again.
I have found out that I should be setting up what is called a "Null Client" so that postfix delivers mail to another server and doesn't try to deliver mail to itself. I got the instructions for the null client from here:
    http://www.postfix.org/STANDARDCONFIGURATION_README.html#nullclient
The problem is is that I have the EIMS mail server running on the same machine and so when postfix tries to connect to it, it still is able to detect that it is sending to the same machine and thus it refuses to connect to the other mail server as in the log below:

Postfix seems to have an option for everything, doesn't it have an option to disable this loop back check? i have looked through all the options and have not found a way. Below is my postfix configuration in case that helps:

    1. The max line length is 998 characters, plus cr/lf
    2. If you're getting the error message, then whatever that message was composed with is broken, and emitting lines longer than that.
Messaging Server has configurable choices. By default, it simply truncates the lines. You can choose to "wrap" them.

    Hello,
Our setup: Mac OS X SERVER 5.2 - LEOPARD SERVER

We try to find such assistance in configuring your Mac book
    OS Server at your service.
We set our server with a local area "domaine.intranet"
We created users with the interface, and have an address
    "[email protected]."
Our messaging system works internally with the client MAIL.
We also have an Internet domain "domaine.fr", this area is hosted
    In online.net.
We have personal e-mail addresses such as "[email protected]" always
    Hosted by online.
We can check our e-mails via the client MAIL by IMAP.
However, we do not send emails to the outside world, and especially
    "Domaine.fr" or "[email protected]."
    In the console admin Server:
-- LETTERS: we have turned the SMTP protocol allowing mail
Entrant, authorizing "Relayer outgoing mail over the host:
    Smtp.orange.fr "
At the tab relay, we leave the config classic 127.0.0.0 / 8
    And 192.168.1.0/24.
In the history of mail, there are "postfix / postfix-7563]: fatal: the
Postfix mail system is not running, why then that the service operates on
    Priori!
How can I be able to send emails to the outside knowing that we
    Use addresses' [email protected]. "
Please tell us a direction to follow or procedure.

  • How to use Message FIlter to log postfix authenticated sender header

I'm trying to log the username from the postfix authenticated sender header information.
Here is an example of the header:
    Received: from [123.123.123.123] (client.domain.edu [234.234.234.234])
(using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client
certificate requested) (Authenticated sender: [email protected]) by
postfix.domain.edu (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id DE8A3E9429 for
     <[email protected]>; Thu, 12 Jun 2014 12:16:56 -0700 (PDT)
And here is the message filter I'm working on:
    if (recv-int == "OutboundIP") {
    if(header('Received') == '\\(Authenticated sender: .+@ad\\.domain\\.edu\\)') {
    log-entry("Authenticated Sender: '$MatchedContent'");
Everything is working except for the $MatchedContent variable.  It is creating the custom log entry but it is only showing as "Authenticated Sender: "
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the $MatchedContent variable to work or another way to log that username?

Try taking out the ' from around your '$MatchedContent'...
    My example:
    dictionary_match:
    if (dictionary-match('not_allowed_words')){
    edit-header-text ("Subject", "^", "Notice Content Matched on: $MatchedContent");
    log-entry("#---# This email had: $MatchedContent #---#");
    notify('[email protected]');
Sent an email with a known "secret" in the email body... and "secret" is in my "not_allowed_words" dictionary... so it'll trip my "dictionary_match" message filter...

  • Barracuda spam filter not downloading mail to xserve - smtp problem?

    Hi-
We just had to upgrade from 10.3 to 10.5 last week (a nightmare that seems to be continuing). We seem to be up and running but there is a weeks accumulation of mail on our barracuda spam filter thzt is not coming through plus any new e-amil from outside the network. Mail seems to be working okay from within the doman. I did a serveradmin check on mail and it is running. In looking through other posts I tried to telnet into the smtp port. I get a timeout when I try to connect from another machine. When I try through localhost I get:
    sh-3.2# telnet localhost smtp
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Can't assign requested address
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Can't assign requested address
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
    Connected to localhost.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    220 xserve.testeq.com ESMTP Postfix
    quit
    221 2.0.0 Bye
The mail.log file does show that the Barracuda is connecting but possibly intermitently?
Of course there could be another problem involved but does anyone have an idea of what may be happening?
    Thanks,
    Alan Husby
    Test Equipment Corporation
Any ideas as to why this should be happening?

Okay - I found a problem with /private/anvil, added anvil line to master.cf and then ran the /etc/postfix/post-install script - Are there any other post install scripts that no one saw fit to put in the documentation that need to run?
I can now connect to the smtp port from another machine. I still get the above errors when I connect to localhost (but it does connect, I forgot to mention above). Still no sign of the weeks worth of mail backed up on the barracuda...

  • Sending php mail(); using postfix. Authentication failed.

Trying to set up my localhost to send php mail() using postfix.
    I did the following:
    Created the sasl_passwd file
    Created the sasl_passwd.db file
Edited mail.cf in the postfix folder to include relay host: relayhost=smtp.live.com:587
I'm trying to relay through my hotmail account. The mail.log returns the following:
    Jan 24 13:17:30 Richards-MacBook-Pro.local postfix/error[927]: E75CCE40EE4: to=<[email protected]>, relay=none, delay=1580, delays=1580/0.07/0/0, dsn=4.0.0, status=deferred (delivery temporarily suspended: SASL authentication failed; server smtp.live.com[65.55.162.200] said: 535 5.0.0 Authentication Failed)
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

    Ok problem solved :)
Problem was between oracle and MS exchange server. Live server oracle 9i is on linux, and testing server works on windows.
So the problem was with configuration. Our admins corrected it and now works :). I don't know details.

  • SOLVED: Mutt & Postfix SMTP

i have setup a mailserver as follows:
getmail - to receive mail from my isp (2 accounts received into seperate maildir directories)
dovecot - to serve the two maildir's over imaps
postfix - to relay my emails to my ISP smtp
On my laptop & desktop I am running Claws-Mail, and everything is working fine (receiving, serving, and sending). However, I decided to setup mutt on the server for checking email quickly via SSH. I have been able to setup mutt to check my mail via imap, but have been unable to get it to send mail. While trying to send an email I have had tail running on the mail.log and found that postfix is not even registering that mutt is trying to send.
How do I go about setting up mutt to send mail using postfix?
I have spent the last week reading different how to's and forum threads, and can't get it to work.

I have 2 .muttrc files for my two email accounts, which I then specify when opening mutt. Both are setup the same, other than the account details. Here is my smtp related lines from one of my .muttrc files:
    set record = "+SENT"
    set postponed = "+.Drafts"
    set smtp_url = "smtp://localhost:25"
set sendmail = "/usr/sbin/sendmail -oem -oi"
    set reply_to = yes

  • Can't get emails- someone is accessing queue directly according to mail.log

I have been unable to "get mail" on this computer since the spring and can't figure out why not (I can get it on my iMAC still).
Today I was looking under mail.log and found some entries from about the time this all started:
imac-g5 postfix/postqueue[856]: warning: Mail system is down -- accessing queue directly.
This message was repeated on 3 other dates as well.
Where would this have come from? I suspect this may have something to do with my problem.
I'm suspicious because this started just after I signed an online petition.

Hi bljay, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I don't think that message is connected to your problem, see...
