Mail replies won't send in OS 10.8.3

Replies to mail messages that have a link within the message won't "send" unless I delete the link and any other messages beneath the message I am replying to .  Message hangs up in activity window . I've checked with my ISP and all is fine there.  My older iMac running OS 10.6.8 mail works flawlessly .  What is going on here?  New messages "send" o.k.   So I'm clueless and bummed about what appears to be some mail glitch on ML.
Also, what is this new "envelope shaped" mail format with the blue border ?  Is there some option to change the format back to the regular " letter shaped" mail format ?
Thanks for any help !
Carolyn.  a.k.a. gladys2

So far, no big change, but I have figured out how to circumvent the problem by just deleting anything  I'm replying to other than the last message in a group of "back and forth" mail.  (if that makes any sense).  Its a minor hassle, but I'm not willing to risk messing up things by getting into areas where I'm not comfortable.... like messing with the Library.
I did run Repair Permissions a couple of times after I had tried everything else that was obvious, shut down, unplugged and restarted. I also sent an e-mail to Apple support and told them what I thought about Mail in ML.
It comforts me somewhat to see that there are a lot of folks out there with the same type problems, each with variations on the theme ! :-)
I do appreciate all you suggested.  If you come up with any other easy ideas, let me know.  You are a good guy to show concern and try to help !

Depending on what account your using, you may need to enter a password for your outgoing mail server, same password as your incoming mail server - go back into the mail account and check.

  • I recently updated to Mavericks and now all my e-mail accounts won't send

I recently updated to Mavericks and now all my e-mail accounts won't send. They all receive ok but when I send I get a message "sender address rejected by server" and " Authentification required" The passwords are still intact

Check the Mail settings for your account, especially the SMTP (outgoing) address, type of authentication, and entry of the proper email username and password. You can do this when you select the account then under the outgoing mail server use the dropdown menu to select the Edit option. Select your outgoing configuration in the list. Check the settings below, then click on the Advanced tab and check those settings.
If all is OK, then I suggest your reinstall Mavericks:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it isthree times faster than wireless.

  • Mail periodically won't send.

Three or four times a day Mail won't send an email. The other 40 or 50 attempts to Send Mail work fine. The whirling icon spins beside Outbox, and eventually (maybe three minutes) I'll get a message that Mail can't send the message using the selected server. If I click Try Again, it will typically send the message.
When Mail doesn't present me with the dialog, I have to quit the application. Upon relaunch, I see an email in the Outbox and I can select it and send it, typically without an error.
This is a sporadic problem, appearing with Leopard, and remaining consistent through all incremental OS upgrades.
I use Comcast as my internet provider, and my email is hosted at GoDaddy.
I have seen other posts with similar problems, but no solutions.
    Ideas? Thanks.

    Greetings,
It's very doubtful that it's the OS - I have 5 of my own machines, and hundreds at work, and there are no issues with sending mail. I move around a lot from city to city and from state to state and I have yet to have a problem of any kind, much less mail.
Do a Repair Permissions, and/or trash the .plist files for Mail, clean out the startup items in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items, and restart the computer. You could also do a "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly" to clean out the cache.
Some fools leave their computers on all the time, and this will shorten the life of any computer, or anything in general, for that matter. I shut my machines down if I'm going to be away from them or more than an hour or so. I will leave them on over night once a month to run the scheduled maintenance.
If you leave your machine on all the time, corruption can result in various parts of a machine, it's not usual, but it can happen.
I run nothing out of the ordinary, like application enhancers, APEs, GROWL, other haxies or any of that junk, nor questionable software, like open source junk, and most of it is just that.
The only true way to determine where the problem lies is to erase the hard drive and start fresh. Just use software like Office 2004 or 2008, the iWork and iLife stuff. Adobe CS stuff should be Ok, as well as any from the major software folks. Load no junkware.
Try your email and see if you still have issues. You can add software a little at a time and see when it breaks.
To say an OS is bad doesn't even make sense to any rational person - there are millions of satisfied users out there that never come to these forums, so that in itself should be a wake up call. There are software issues, from time to time, but by and large, those issues are addressed pretty quickly and Apple would never let something like that fester without addressing it. That's why we have updates from time to time. Most of the issues here, are self generated, one way or another.
    Cheers,
    M.

  • Outgoing mail suddenly won't send

For years I've had a POP account, using Mac Mail to send and rec ATT/Yahoo mail. In the past week or so, my account has decided it won't send anything and says the server can't be accessed. However, incoming mail works fine, and my wife's POP account on another log-in with ATT/Yahoo mail also works fine sending and receiving. I tried deleting my account and starting over, which allowed me to send one email successfully. Next time I logged in, though, it was back to balking. Any ideas?

Hey, I found a fix for Mac who use ATT / UVerse / Yahoo!!
The directions that are given by ATT are only good for setting up an ATT e-mail account on a Mac. If for some reason you need to use another provider (gasp!) their settings will NOT work. The workaround is to have an agent open up port 25 so that you can use another outgoing smtp server. In my case, my provider is fatcow.com (really!). So once port 25 was opened up I could add smtp.fatcow.com as an outgoing mail server. In that case, they do require password authentication. Your case may be simpler and you may not need authentication at all (Inisight, WOW, RoadRunner etc.)
So it is possble, despite the dearth of information on ATT's UVerse web site. : P
    Cheers,
    : )

  • My imac's mail programme won't send my mail!

The imac has my hotmail linked to it, and has never had any problems but suddenly it won't send mail.  It says it timed out when connecting to live.com.  I have tried reinstalling the hotmail account but it didn't fix it.  Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?  My iphone is working fine with the account and it also works with hotmail over the internet.  I am stumped!

I've had exactly the same issue over the past couple of days and this fix has just worked for me (thanks untzy) but I guess it hinges on you being with BT.
    1. Login to your BT home hub manager (this can be done using the router address located at: system preferences/network/advanced/TCP/IP)
    2. Input your router address into the web browser search bar
    3. Once on the access page you will need to input your wireless admin password (found on the back of your router)
    4. When you are on the home page, you will need to follow the following steps to change your device name:
    5. Select "A-Z" in the top right section of the page
    6. Click on "Home Network" from the available list of options
    7. Click on the Device in question (it should be showing as connected - I identified mine by the mac address, although it was named as 'unknown')
    8. Under Device Information, enter a new name (be sure this is memorable in case you need it again)
    9. Ensure Always use this address is set to Yes (it is by default)
    10. Click Apply.
You will then need to restart your computer - after this, hopefully the problem will be resolved....

  • Mail freezes, won't send

I know there have been several threads recently about Mail not sending, but my problem did not seem to match up with anyone else's, so perhaps I'm alone in this or there's some simple solution I've overlooked.
I have three Gmail IMAP accounts running through Mail; all have behaved fine until recently. Now several (related?) problems are occurring:
    1) After mail has been open for a minute or so, it does not receive new messages. New messages ONLY arrive upon opening Mail. Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
    2) Attempting to view/sort/search mailboxes fails after a minute or so of Mail being open. (i.e. When I am in mailbox #1 and I attempt a search or click on mailbox #2, Mail freezes and won't display a list of messages or the body of a message. Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
    3) When I'm composing an outgoing message, if I've taken more than a minute or two, Mail won't send the message. I click on Send and nothing happens. The window showing my draft disappears, but the "Sent" Mailbox never changes to "Sending...", the message is not saved to Drafts and is never sent. Essentially it is lost (You can imagine how much fun this has been). Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
Any thoughts on what's happening here? On an unrelated(?) note, I've had the same issue others have discussed, wherein Safari is not retaining cookies. Safari has also been freezing my screen and mouse several times a day, necessitating a hard restart. Don't know if this is related; one problem at a time.

Anybody? Any thoughts? Maybe a starting point...?

  • My Mail "replies" won't go out

When I try to reply to an email message on my phone I get the error:
Cannot Send Mail  A copy has been placed in your Outbox. The recipient "whateveremailaddress" was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying.
I used to be able to do this fine. but lately I get this on any reply I try to make.
My wife has a 4s as well on the same account and she can reply just fine.  What could be wrong with my phone and email replies?
    Steve
I can reply on my desketop at home and at work and my wife's phone on the same email server works fine. I just don't get it.

I've noticed in comparing my 4s to my wife's 4s that on mine the account says POP and on hers the mail account says IMAP. I haven't heard of IMAP. Could that be waht's causing my problem?  I don't see any way to change mine to be IUMAP instead of POP.

  • Mail app won't send attachments

A few days ago my macbook pro stopped sending email with attached files, and so did my wife's macbook (both running snow leopard at the start of the problem). Regular mail is sent but both sending an receiving is painstakingly slow. Progress bar appears but near the end the transfer rate slows to reach zero and stays there forever.
Webmail access to my account won't let me send attachments either.
Problem happens with yahoo plus, hotmail and workplace mail servers. Also from home (through broadband telephone access connected to an airport extreme base station) or from wifi access at work, at work downloading messages is fast though. Doesn't happen when sending through my ipad2.
I have reset the broadband modem and base station, rebuilt permissions in both computers, changed MTU settings and upraded my macbook pro to lion with no success.
    Any ideas?

I don't think so because I used to send 2MB or 3 MB files with no problem and now it won't let me send a 60K word document. It also happened out of the blue, no system updates or preference tweaking whatsoever.

  • Mail app won't send mail, but it will receive mail

The mail app on my macbook pro and iphone will not send mail, but they can recieve mail.  I deleted both accounts and reloaded them and they still won't work.  After that I ran repair permissions and it found nothing wrong.  Has anyone experienced this problem and how can I fix this?

I had same problem with my MBA and Mac Desktop (don't have iPhone)...could receive but not send emails after Lion upgrade.  I only experienced it at home versus at work (inconsistently on both on my macbook air and my desktop mac).
For me the solution was when you compose an email there are two dropdown listboxes next to From:  ...in the second one select smtp.me.com:yourusername   Until Apple makes a change you might need to do that each time you send or reply to a message.
I think it has something to do with if you don't do that then port 25 might get used which can be blocked by a lot of ISPs.
Apple support helped me solve this problem and said it was a known issue they are working on.
Hope this helps with your issue!

  • Mail app won't send messages out

I am logged into gmail on my iPhone 4 mail app. I tried to reply to a message yesterday and it wouldn't work. The message sat in my outbox saying "unsent" because I needed to go to my mail account settings and enter a password. Well I went to settings, mail, account, and my password was stored there. I re-typed it anyway to see what would happen. I went back to the mail app, and the message still has not sent. But now I don't have an Outbox folder on the main page either! The only way I know it's still unsent is because when the app refreshes, it says 1 Unsent Message on the bottom of the screen.
So my question is, what is going on, where did my outbox go, why did it tell me to enter a password, and most importantly, why won't my message send?!
I was connected to wifi, if that makes a difference. And does it make a difference if it was a reply versus a new message? I just tried a test email, connected through 3G, and it says it sent.

Something stuck in the cache? Try a reset. To reset the iPhone, press and hold the home and sleep/wake buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the slide to power off prompt).
