Hi
I'm looking to set up an automator action to send bulk emails - I just have no idea how to do it!
Basically I want the action to do the following:
Get a list of contacts from something like an excel spreadsheet
Create a new mail message for each contact
Insert text from something like a word document.
Attach 2 predefined files
Send off
I want this action to run automatically at a time period i can set (ie every month etc).
Any help?
Tried googling but I havent come up with anything yet.

None of the standard Automator actions will do this. The *New Mail Message* action doesn't accept variables for the contents, and the *Group Mailer* is designed for sending the same message to a group of people from your Address Book.
This looks like a task for an AppleScript - you might have better luck finding one of those.

    The CSS and html markup that is used in an email is different than what is used on a web site. At this stage muse does create web pages which are fully compatible with email campaign programs, so this would be something that you need to test for your self and see if the outcome is acceptable to you or not.

  • Issue with script timeouts - trying to send email mail shots - hosting recommendations?

    Background is this - I look after a site for a recruitment agency, which has a backend mySQL database.
    It includes a table of potential candidates, which the site owner can search based on various criteria and then send all the returned candidates an email about potential jobs they might be interested in.
    I'm using an off the shelf script to send the emails, and have jumped through a few hoops to get this to work, but it looks like we need to move hosting unfortunately.
    The script is able to limit emails so that the hosting company doesn't get black flagged as a spammer.
    I've set it up with a progress bar in a new window so the site owner can see progress, but easily get back to the rest of the site.
    But where we have come unstuck is the script timeout on the server - so even though its set to send emails slowly enough, ie under 500 emails an hour, because of that slow pace, it fails if it takes more then five minutes to send them all as the script times out.
    My understanding is that the script includes a line to reset the script timeout value to 0, so enabling the script to keep running until all the emails have been sent. But unfortunately our current hosting company does not allow the script timeout to be reset at the PHP level.
    So my question is this - is anyone doing anything similar, and if so, can you recommend any hosting company that does allow the script timeout to be reset at the PHP level?
    Because at the minute it seems like a frustrating catch-22 - slow it down to get around the spam issue, and it won't run long enough to send all the emails. Speed it up, and it falls foul of the script timeout.
    Any advise on this, or hosting suggestons most welcome!

    Although there is an AppleScript Forum, Automator can run AppleScripts, so sometimes things can go in either forum. In your script, other than not setting a recipient, you are just getting one of the persons. You need to get a list of your contact information, then build your outgoing messages from that list - for example:

  • Email Mail Merge using mail

    I run a small business and have 3,000 clients on my email database and i am having issues in sending large mail shots using mail. Before i changed to a mac i used to be able to use an excel database with outlook which i could send a mass email mail shot with a few clicks and it send each client an individual email.
    I can't seem to get this to work using mail so i have to send 1 email with 20 or so applicants per email(as my broadband supplier limits me to 25 applicants per email) which is very time consuming and also not as profesional.
    Is there a way round this at all or a program which i can run with mail?

    I've been wrestling with the same problem. I googled a number of related keywords, and found several programs that will handle "mail-merge" tasks. I downloaded two demos. The first is SerialMailer, and it can be found at http://www.falkon-ware.com/SerialMailer/ I gave it one trial and it appears easy to use and adequate to the limited tasks for which I need it. You can import e-mail addresses from Apple's Address Book, or a number of other formatted files. It costs $29.95. The other one I have only take a glance at. It is Max Bulk Mailer, and can be found at http://www.maxprog.com/site/software/internet-marketing/mass-bulk-emailersheetus.php
    It looks to be more flexible and powerful and a bit more polished that SearialMailer, but it costs $49.90 for the standard version and $59.90 for the Pro version. The cheaper program looked like all I needed so I didn't test the more expensive one any further. My guess is that one of these (or another you might find with a google search) will take care of your mail merge needs quite handily, and for not much money.

  • Sharing an address book over a local network - is .Mac required?

    We have a smal Mac ethernet network of 4 or five macs all running OSX 10.3 or above and all with Administrator access. Each mac is used by one member of staff only. One member of staff maintains our client/supplier contacts database as an Excel worksheet on one of the macs, for mail merging with Word, marketing mail shots and other correspondence etc.
    Other staff on the network need access to those up-to-date contacts on a daily basis and it is a pain accessing the Excel file all the time accross the network. I have my own pesonal .Mac membership account and I have successfully experimented with exporting the Excel file as a formatted text file (.txt) and importing the relevant fields from the file into Address Book. I intend empowering the 'contacts maintainer' to import the Excel contacts into her macs address book at periodic intervals....
    Based on this scenario, my questions are as follows:
    a) Can other staff access/share her address book contacts over the network in their local copy of Address Book without a .Mac account?
    b) If she is set up with a .Mac account on her Mac...
    i) I can subscribe to her address book through my copy of Address Book as I have a .Mac account already - how will this display in my Address Book (Will it automatically creat a new Group?)
    ii) Do other staff have to have individual .Mac accounts in order to subscribe to her Address Book contacts (and do they need the full .Mac Membership) – Could they not simply enter her .Mac member details in their macs System Prefs>.Mac>Account and then synchronise Contacts (and possibly iCal Calendars) as this is all they would require it for?
    c) Is there a simpler way to achieve all this at minimal cost?
    d) Is Directory Access>Contacts involved in a possible alternative solution or am I 'barking up the wrong tree'?
    Would appreciate some help with this ASAP!

    Hi Dozza,
    The good news is YES, sharing an Address Book group(s) is easily done without .Mac
    Since you are on an ethernet network, all you need to do is:
    1. Enable Sharing thru System Preferences from your "main" computer you wish to transfer data from/with.
    2. Drag your AB group(s) or individual cards to the desktop of your main computer - the one you have all the info in... (the cards will convert to vCards automatically.
    3. Place those groups or cards in your Drop Box folder which is: Hard Drive>Users>your "Home" folder>Public>Drop Box
    4. All networked computers will be able to access your Drop Box folder even if you do not want other info shared.
    Of course .Mac is pretty darn handy too!

  • Infinity rollout stopped at the end of my street ?...

    Hi all,
    This is my first post so here goes. Like most people I've been waiting for Infinity for a while now. I already know my exchange has been updated MYLOF, and that my street cabinet (CAB 15) hasnt been. My issue is that the rollout has completely passed by my estate. I've enclosed a map, my estate is boxed in red. All other areas on the map are eligible for Infinity.
    I've tried to have a conversation with BT, but that was too painful to describe and resulted in a simple "it's not available in your area". We've even had the entire estate mail shot by BT to signup for Infinity. My estate is a new build, although I've lived on it for over 2 yrs so now that new.
    Have we been simply skipped over?? Can anyone offer any suggestions or help?

    Within an exchange area there will be some customers who can't get BT Infinity. There are several reasons why this could be the case:
    Your phone line may be connected directly to the telephone exchange and not to a local street cabinet.
    Your line may be too far from the local street cabinet to have a stable BT Infinity service.
    Your local street cabinet may not be suitable for fibre optic cables.
    We haven't yet got the council's planning permission to do the necessary work at your local street cabinet.
    So, even though you may be within an enabled exchange area, it's possible that your particular line may not be able to have BT Infinity yet. at activation of an exchange not all street cabs are enabled at that stage there is a phased roll out of street cabinets 
    Our availability checker at www.bt.com/infinity has the latest detail about what speed your line can provide.

    I have created a trigger through which i am trying to send a mail.but it gives an error message as:
    ORA-30678: too many open connections
    Also when i run the same script at the SQL Prompt, it will send the email to mentioned recipients.
    Please help me in resolving this issue...

    That is a very wrong approach to use. The purpose of a trigger is to protect data integrity. It is not a do-everything-with-it-including-washing-the-windows tool.
    A trigger can submit a DBMS_JOB that in turn will do an e-mail shot. A trigger can insert an e-mail request into a table (queue) for a DBMS_JOB to pick up and process.
    But a trigger that performs external functions (like sending mail, accessing the o/s command line, etc) compromises the business transaction - and make it dependant on external and non-related factors to make it succeed. What if the e-mail address is wrong? What if the POP mailbox of the recipient is full/ What if the mail server is down for 5 minutes maintenance? What if that specific network router/gateway/switch is down?
    Fail the business transaction because of the trigger attempting to do what it is not suppose to do?
    External functions have no place in a trigger.

  • Need help to compress data

    It's generally considered a bad idea to send big files in a mail shot. It really annoys some people because it fills up their mail box. Good practice is to put the file on your web site, and send out a small piece inviting them to visit and read it.

  • Envelope failing to print from Address Book

    Previously had no problems printing to my Epson 1290S from AB but recently the command to print (generally to C6/7) is accepted and processed but the envelope simply passes through the printer without printing. Irritating!

    Address Book itself seems pretty stable (unlike me) and has, in the past, printed envelopes for my entire Christmas list. Now it is just the final part of the printing process that fails. Data registers in the printing pane, the blue bar fills and the printer goes through the motions and feeds the envelope through but without actually printing anything on it. Weird.
    Have checked through my addresses but some, by the very nature of my contacts and the information made available to me, do not always include a full address, merely an email/phone number - but I would not be including these in a mail shot any way.

  • (No Sender) mailshots!!!

    Since latest upgrade my mail has been downloading numerous inaccessible mail shots labelled (No Sender) (No Subject) This message has no content. This mail cannot be opened or deleted and is irritating. What is going on? It has coincided with screen freezing and sudden loss of picture. If it is a software pro how can it be fixed? I have a G3 iphone with 4.0.1 (8A306) software

    I feel your pain with the "no sender" e-mails that you can not delete. I have an I Phone 4 but was getting the same with my I Phone 3GS. I have Mobile Me and Gmail. I found a solution. All I do is go to "Settings", them "Mail, Contacts, Calendars", then select E-Mail Account (ie.... Mobile Me or G Mail), then turn off "E-Mail". Then I return to the Home Screen, wait for a few seconds, then go back into "Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Mobile Me / GMail" and turn the E-Mail back on.
    This procedure has been working to solve the problem 100% of the time. A little bit of a hassle but it's working until the Genius' at Apple come out with another update to solve the problem once and for all.

    My group was created manually on my iPad - after unsuccessfully trying to sync groups with gmail for the last 2 months...
    Groups seem to be a problem ... You cannot drag contacts into a group on the iPad... Well, I couldn't anyway. 
    But Mail shot Pro is easy to use.
