Mail Spell Check started underlining all words as incorrect
Hi Folks.
This is my first post/question. I have searched for the answer on these forums and elsewhere but can't locate any suggestions. Forgive me if I have overlooked anything useful already posted.
My question relates to Spell Check in Mail.
For some reason, my spell check has started underlining all words with red squiggles with the exception of a few common words (eg 'the' 'and')
I'm not the best speller - but I'm not getting 98% of my word wrong. But Mail spell check thinks I am.
Does anyone know why this has started to happen and how it can be fixed?
Thanks
Thanks Tom. That solved the problem.
How strange that the dictionary switched to Spanish overnight.
Thanks again.

I recently turned off the function for spell check to underline words it feels are misspelled. Instead I opted to have the email spell checked after I press send and correct from there. I figured a few "changes" and a few "ignores", and off it goes.
Unfortunately I find that the spell check proceeds to correct my email and the email I am replying to. This prolongs the spell check beyond what I had hoped to do: correct my mistakes and my mistakes only.
I know my aging parents don't spell very well, but is there a way to tell the spell check function to only correct my reply? I don't need to correct the email I am replying to as well.Thanks--I found it interesting! Especially when Spell Check quit working for me, too.
Very weird.
I went back and selected 'Correct Spelling Automatically' in Text Edit-- that works, but I don't like it either. Whoops, only intermittently. I just looked again and that's not working now. Wow, no restart of computer and I hadn't closed Text Edit-yet it stopped working.
Spell checking seems to be behaving badly. It will not underline in mail--until I change a misspelled word....and then only sometimes. At the best it's intermittent.
I hope someone found it interesting enough to fix w/the next system update... -
After downloading Firefox, my e-mail spell check doesn't work
for years I had used IE. I recently installed Firefox and now my e-mail spell check doesn't work. The dictionary is loaded but cannot figure out how to resolve this. It still works when using IE, so am assuming it's a Firefox glitch.
Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?
* You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
* Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
* Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
* Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
You can look here for dictionaries:
* https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/language-tools/

Spelling Check underlines all words
Hello everybody!
I have a problem which had appeared just recently.
Whenever I start writing in Mail, or in some internet applications, like the Text Edit, all words appear underlined with Red, as if all of them would be misspeled.
Here is the picture of how it actually looks:
or this one:
I wonder what might be the cause of this problem and how can I resolve it.
It seems to me, that possibly some aliases to the Dictionary, or the grammar library have been lost...
Well, thank you very much for any idea!Thank you very much!
Your answer hit right into target! And the problem was so simple undercore, but without your advice I, probably, wouldn't guess it! I have been looking into the System, trying to find something there and, in fact, never looked carefully into the "Show Spelling and Grammar" menu. So, I actually have made an important discovery for myself, too.
Thanks again! -
Mail spell check hangs on last misspelled word
Hi everybody,
I have a bit of a dilemma that is quite annoying, and I would love it not to be. My spell checker in Mail (OSX 10.4.10) hangs on the last word when spell checking a message. I am able to check my spelling and choose Ignore/Guess/Correct etc. but when it reaches the end of my email it stops. Spell check will identify the misspelled word, but will not allow me to make corrections or ignore the word like it used to. The familiar tone and empty spell check box is no longer to be found.
But this does work in textedit! No problems what so ever. I have tried to scour these forums and tried a few things, but still nothing. I have also noticed this problem occurs in another user account.
I have checked the Ownership and Permissions of the spell checker file, deleted preference files, re-installed Mail by itself, performed an archive and install, completely reinstalled OSX and still nothing.
So now if any of you have an idea please let me know.
Thanks in advance,
SebastianYou're welcome.
I do not have that checked
Well, you should. Leaving messages on the server indefinitely may end up clogging up your mail account there and cause this kind of problems. Just specify After one week or After one month if you don't want messages to be removed from the server immediately. -
I'm having an issue with Mail in Leopard - when I first open Mail and start to compose a new email the spell checker (usually) works. However, after Mail has been open for a while, the spell checker stops working - without any error displayed.
I have the check spelling while typing option checked.
The spell checker does not flag miss-spelled words while I type and it does not recognize miss-spelled words if I try to spell check with Edit - Spelling and Grammar - Check Document Now.
I can typically get the spell checker to function again by quitting and restarting Mail.
Anyone else run into this?Something similar just happen on my computer. Not only will Spell checker not show up at all, in any way, for Mail but also doesn't show up in Text Ed.

Spell checking in Mail on my iMac has recently quit working. All the settings are enabled the same as they always have been to check the spelling as I type, including that setting in Mail Preferences. I am using the most current OS and Mail version 4.3.
No matter what word I type misspelled, even the most obvious misspellings, it WILL underline it in red but when you click on it, it says No Guesses Found. Meanwhile, spell checking works just as it should on my MacBook.
Any ideas anyone?Yes, that seemed to work. Thank you!
Sorry--in my first post, I said "I have it set to check mail as I type. " and I meant "check spelling as I type."
Thanks again. -
The spell checker identifies incorrect spelled words, however when I right click or control click the word the spell checker only highlights in yellow the first word in the email and gives a dialog with the spelling and definition even though that word already correctly spelled. This is version 33.1 on my mac desktop running 10.10. Spell checking works properly if I use Safari.

Mail spell check goes through the ENTIRE email looking for misspellings
Is there anyway when you use spell check in mail that it won't go through the ENTIRE message and just use the part that you have typed. Example: When you respond to an email from someone it spell checks their email as well. Any suggestions?
Hi,
In Preferences under "Composing" you could check "Check Spelling as I type". that will hold it in your reply only. You can either correct it right away (it gets underlined), or wait till later and do them all at the same time by going to Edit> Spelling> Check Spelling ( or the Command-semi-colon keys hit together) they will come up one-by-one for correction.
This is about the easiest way to do it.

Spell Check Marks Correctly Spelled Words
Does anyone have this problem on their iPad? I'm getting correctly spelled words marked with red underline as misspelled. For example I have had the word "that" marked as misspelled. When I click on the word "that", it does not give me an option for the word. I could go on with several examples of common words that are spelled correctly, but the iPad is marking them as misspelled.
Thanks! I'll check this out.
And yes that seems to be the problem. The international button is a toggle that goes through all languages set up on your iPad. I have English, Russian, and Spanish. It seems that I have accidentally toggled to Russian and then when I toggled agin, it went to Spanish, which I thought was English.
So the next question I have is if I have the Spanish keyboard on, does it spell check in Spanish? -
Non - American English Language Mail Spell Check?
I am curious, is there a way to set up spell check in Mail so that it corrects for Canadian English instead of US English? Pages, does this - and in fact for numerous languages - nicely, but I haven't seen where one can do this in the Mail app. You know, odd items like "travelling" vs "traveling" or "colour" vs. "color". That sort of thing. Our British friends must have encountered similar issues, come to think of it. What do you all do?
Thanks,
johnSpot on, Tom! Good that you mentioned the 2 parts to the solution, because when I only changed the spelling in Prefs/Language, etc. nothing took place. I needed to also go to Edit/Spelling etc. as you point out. Also, I shut down and re-booted to enable everything.
Thanks kindly,

Spell Checking Text with All Capital Letters
Is it possible to change a spell check option in Adobe, like you can in MS Word, to include words in all capital letters? we have thousnads of documents that require all text to be all capitals and spend an appreciable amount of time spell checking by copying to MS Word to discover errors. No one I've talked to seems to have an answer.
As I understand it the spell check in Acrobat is for text in annotations only.
It does not check PDF page content..
Such content needs to be spell/grammer checked before converting to PDF.

Is it possible for pages spell check to not flag words that are found on wikipedia?
I'm using Pages 5.2.2 in OSX 10.9.5 and type lots of medical and science words into pages. These words are not found in the default dictionary and are thus flagged as misspelled words (red underline). They are found on wikipedia and I have enabled wikipedia in the dictionary app. For instance, the word "epiglottitis" is flagged. When I right click on it and select "Look up 'epiglottitis'", the dictionary popup opens and the word is found.
Is there a way to adjust the spell check settings so that it does not flag words that it can find on Wikipedia? If this could be done in iOS as well, it would be fantastic. Thanks! Thanks! I also discovered that I can add dictionaries for the spellchecker in "Library > Spelling" and then go to "System Preferences > Keyboard > Text > Spelling > Set up..." and select them there, so that may be a faster way to add words to the spellchecker.

Mail Spell Check Needs a LOT of Work
How do we get Apple to make major improvements to their MAIL Program? I love the program and it's ease of use, but the SPELL CHECK adn GRAMMAR CHECK leaves a lot to be disired. I will NEVER say that Outlook is a better mail program BUT it does a superior job in handling these two functions.
This has cause me infinite problems as I always do NOT have time to go back and FIX what Apple has changed.
Presently I use my MacBookPro and my Mac Pro, and both have the problem. I just upgradedto Mountain Lion on my Notebook and it is no better.http://www.apple.com/feedback/
