Maintaining the column widths in Columns View.

Is there any way in OS X (Leopard) to have Finder windows remember the column widths when in Columns View. Can dimensions be associated with directories?
I think I must have stretched the 2nd and 3rd columns out from their default to read long filenames 100x a day since I started using Tiger / Panther. There are commercial Finder enhancing apps I've never installed one but if there is one that can do this I am interested.
Thanks In Advance

This worked well for me:
1) Add a Content Editor Web Part
2) Click Source Editor
3) Enter the following code:
[css] <style> .ms-viewheadertr { display: none;} </style> [/css]
4) Select Save
5) Go to Layout and Select 'Hidden'

  • Is it possible to set default column widths in list view when using a finder window in Mavericks?

    The default 'document' column is way too wide and forces you eye to track all the way across the screen to read info like "date modified', 'kind' or 'size'.
    Tried several times to create a narrower default 'document name' column with no results. Couldn't find anything in preferences or view options. Tried dragging column headers while holding the down the option key with no results.
    Every time I open a new finder window, all columns except the 'document' column affixed to the right side of the window. Also, when you grab the bottom right corner of a window to resize smaller, the lists become re-affixed to the right side of the window when opening the window back up.
    Experiencing the same problem in Mavericks 10.9.3 on an iMac and Macbook Pro Retina.
    Thanks if you've made it this far:)

    This was a great place for me to start
    Thank you
    I took profdant139's suggestions a bit further as my real goal was to have the "Document column" narrower. The goal to be able to see all the other document info that was usually hidden way out to the right
    To achieve my results I right clicked in the upper bar with the column names and chose from the drop down box "comments" column (as suggested). I then dragged it to the far right. This pushed all the other columns over.
    In the end of the day I ended up adding "Size" and "Date modified" columns as well to get my desired results.
    Remember one can move different columns around to be in the order you need by clicking on the column to get it active and then left click and drag it to where you want
    Another great thing is that by default (Using Mavericks) the date modified, opened,created columns have date and time. One can shrink them down to xx/xx/xx format by manually adjusting the column width like one does in Excel - click on column separator up top and drag
    Once all that is done, at least on my box, I closed it out and opened up a new finder window and everything was as I wanted.
    Thank you for the help  from the above helper to get me here

  • Edit Column Width in Expanded View

    I'm not too thrilled about the new iTunes, mostly because of the loss of easy navigation.
    My library is full mostly of classical music, and the track names are often very long [eg. "Couperin: Pièces de Clavecin, Onziême Ordre - Les Jongleurs, Sauteurs Et Saltimbanques, Avec Les Ours Et Les Singes"].
    The library songs display isn't good for me because it's difficult to keep track of which album one track is a part of, or I'll be looking for something in a specific album which is very difficult to find since each track has its album listing. I liked it before where each album had its array of tracks in one easy bloc.
    The difficulty with the albums list is that the text under the albums is cut off before I can see which album it actually is [eg. I see "Bach: Organ Wor...", which isn't good for me because I'm looking for "Bach: Organ Works [Disc 9]"; so in order to find the one I want, I have to count up to number 9. And then when I finally find the right album, I can't distinguish between track names in the expanded view because the columns are too thin to display the often lengthy track names.
    It looks something like this in "expanded view":
    Say I'm looking for the the Menuetto of Haydn's String Quartet #70 in the album Haydn: String Quartets [Disc 20]:
    Album: Haydn: String Quar...
    1. Haydn String Quartet #70, Op....
    2. Haydn String Quartet #70, Op....
    3. Haydn String Quartet #70, Op....
    4. Haydn String Quartet #70, Op....
    How can I find it when the columns are too thin to display the entire track name?
    It seems like the "songs view" and the "albums view" have their own difficulties. So I have two questions:
    Is there a way to change the size of the album boxes under "album view"? Now, seven albums fit in one row [in full screen mode]. If I could change it to four albums per row, then I will be able to read the full album names.
    Also, in the "expanded view", is there a way to change the width of the columns? If I could increase the column width, then I will be able to read the different track names.
    If these things can't be done, then the album view is useless to me, and since the "songs view" is also difficult to use, then this version of iTunes is useless to me and I will have to find another media player.
    It's unfortunate that iTunes 11 can be so difficult for classical music listeners, but I'm sure other people have difficulties with this too.
    Thanks for the help!
    Kind regards,
    Actuary87

    As far as I know.. no.

  • Possibility for automatic column width in column view

    hi there,
    i would like to ask if anybody has an idea to fulfil my desire.
    i work in column view in the finder of os 10 and it is not handy that i can not read some of my file names due to the column view.
    is there a possibility that the columns change their width automatically? or does anyone knows a shareware to solve this problem.
    i want to open a new window and all columns change themselves.
    thank you very much. kind regards,
    michael

    While this isn't a solution, if you double click on the column width adjustment button (under the arrows of the column you are looking at) the column will increase width to fully show the widest name in the column.
    However, it would be nice to have a Preference available that would let you choose to always have columns displayed with columns at sufficient width to show full names.
    I think this issue is a remnant of a small screen psychology. Large screens are now so prevalent that wide columns would not be a significant issue.

  • AUTO_RESIZE jtable set column width by column header

    Do I need to use one of the AUTO_RESIZE methods, the TableColumnModel, or another method in order to set the default width for a column based on the width of the column header.

    This is a simple question with an answer. In a JTable, how do you set the width of a column depending on the width of the column header?

  • How do I change the border width of a table column?

    Hi I am using Studio Edition Version 11.1.1.3.0.
    I want to set the border width of columns inside an af:table to something different than the default still haven´t found a way to do this. I have tried setting Border Width property in Style tab of the column but it has no effect. I would apprciate if someone could tell me how to do this or point to some tutorial or blog where I can see how this is done.

    I tested it a little more and it seems like what I did is working on normal columns and the reason it isn´t working in my case is because I have two grouping columns (that is two columns containing other columns) and on those columns code like
    <af:column sortProperty="BillRef" sortable="true" headerText="#{bindings.Bill.hints.BillRef.label}"
    id="tblBillC1" width="85" inlineStyle="border-width:2.0px; border-color:Red;">
    has no effect for some reason.
    It is the group columns borders that I want to make a little wider so that it is easyer for the user of the table to see the where the table is split into groups.
    I will make an example to better descibe what I want to achieve.
    If you look at the code below and observe what is achieved when it is run you will see that the borders of the inner columns become green and 10px while the outer columns don´t get blue and 20px and it is the outer columns border that I want to change.
    <af:table >
    <af:column headerText="Sosial eyðmerking" id="sosCol" align="center"
    inlineStyle="border-color:Blue; border-width:20.0px;">
    <af:column sortProperty="something"
    headerText="something" id="c5"
    inlineStyle="border-color:Green; border-width:10.0px;">
    <af:outputText value="something" id="ot2"/>
    </af:column>
    <af:column headerText="#something" id="c7">
    <af:outputText value="something" id="ot3"/>
    </af:column>
    </af:column>
    <af:column headerText="Rokn eyðmerking" id="roknCol" align="center"
    inlineStyle="border-color:Blue; border-width:20.0px;">
    <af:column sortProperty="something"
    headerText="something" id="c8" filterable="true"
    inlineStyle="border-color:Green; border-width:10.0px;">
    <af:outputText value="something" id="ot4"/>
    </af:column>
    <af:column headerText="#something" id="c9">
    <af:outputText value="something" id="ot5"/>
    </af:column>
    </af:column>
    /af:table>

  • Open / save dialog boxes - customizing column widths

    When i open or save a doc in any of the CS5 apps, for mac, in column view, the left hand column where my projects are listed is too narrow. i see 9-10 characters. can the default width be changed so that this column will always be wider when i open those dialog boxes?

    What version of Mac OS X are you running? I just did a test in InDesign CS 5.5 running on Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.3). In Lion, the open dialog window is "sticky". When you drag the column widths in column view, they continue to open that way when you open them again.

    How can I Set Column width in query
    I understand you can set column width using
    column col1 FORMAT A5
    select col1 from table1;But this only works in SQL*Plus
    I want to be able to do this in a regular SQL query window (not in SQL*Plus), how can I do it.....
    I am using a 'SQL window' in PL/SQL Developer IDE
    and when I use this syntax it says:
    ORA-00900: Invalid SQL statement
    Any suggestions are appreciated...
    thanks,

    Did you try using RPAD or LPAD functions? They fill the unfilled part of a string with character you provide... either on right or left side depending on what function you use.
    e.g.
    SELECT RPAD('Smith', 10, ' ') Name FROM dual;http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/ora/sql/rpad.html

  • Default column width in Address Book

    When I compose a new message in Mail and call up the Address Book, the first column containing the groups is always very narrow. I can widen it manually and it stays wide for the session, but the next time I start Mail, it shows up narrow again. Is there a way to set the default width of the Address Book columns?

    Greetings,
    The width of columns in the Address Book pane in Mail can only be changed on a per-session basis; after you quit Mail, they will revert to their original values. There is no way to set the default width of columns for Address Book.

    No, because you can't set a columns view default.

  • Finder List View: Maintain Column Width

    OSX 10.7.3 - I prefer to use the "list view" option in Finder. With that said, I find it maddening that when I re-open Finder following a session where I had resized the column widths, I have to once again resize column width in order to see the full name of a file (instead of it being truncated.). Is there a way to set up Finder so that the columns stay resized each time I reopen a Finder window.

    There's something in your Finder prefs...
    I tested that and it works as expected.
    Have you tried creating a new account and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.)
    Open System Preferences > Accounts > "+" make it an admin account.
    If this works, then log back into your problem account and Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Then, restart, or log out and in again.
    (You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • How can I change the width of columns in (e.g.) the week view in Thunderbird / Lightning?

    As it currently displays, the Lightning display of a week doesn't fit in the window, so I'm forever scrolling left and right. I'd like to reduce the width of columns so that all 6 or 7 days (depending on whether it's a work week or full week) can be displayed within the window's width, without scrolling. There seems to be no standard way to configure this to happen.
    I have the calendar pane on the left reduced to its narrowest (I still need this for navigation, so I can't just get rid of it).
    I have tried zooming out, but all this does is reduce the height of events etc. within the columns, it does not affect the width of the columns.
    Thanks.

    While they may auto adjust to what it thinks is a correct width, far too often it allocates way too much room and that causes lists with 4 columns to be much longer than they need to be and without the ability to adjust them, lists look strange.
    http://twitpic.com/23ro09/full is an example of the first column having been allocated too much room.

  • Permanently Widen Finder View Column Width

    I am familiar with the method to get a full/wider view of a Finder column when I'm there, but the column width goes back to its original width when the Finder is closed. Any way that anyone knows to set and maintain a wide column view after closing Finder?

    It should remain at the size where you left it.
    Maybe some fuzz in Finder prefs.
    Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash com.apple.finder.plist
    Then, restart, or log out and in again.
    (You might have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
