Maintenance of a web site

Hi;
I would like to realize a procedure of rebuilding of a web site (J2ee application) at the time of phase of maintenance (updated of the database).
Have you any idea for that ? I must to use a filter servlet for locking all pages, two database in clustering for the update, etc ...
How the official site realize this maintenance processus (for example Sun site).
Regards;

What version of GoLive are you using? If CS2, behind the Files tab (left side of site window) there's a CSS tab that's pretty handy for that sort of thing. For instance, expand the Classes section and select a class. Then go to Window > Site > In and Out Links and it'll show the class in the middle, with any CSS files with rules for that class on the left, and any pages that use the class on the right.
Doing the same in the CSS Files section is great for seeing which CSS files are being used in which pages.

  • New to MAC - need advice on WEB site maintenance

Hello switched to mac from windows very recently. I need to find an easy to use wysiwygI software which will allow me to maintain my template based website , previously maintained in expression web. IWEB appears to only work with sites created in IWEB. I downloaded CODA which is nice but appears not to be WYSIWYG. Can someone recommend a really simple intuitive yet powerful web site editor with wysiwyg functionality. Appreciate any help

Try taking a look at RapidWeaver which is available via the Mac App Store. You could also look at Sandvox and Sandvox Pro from http://www.karelia.com.
You are correct that iWeb cannot open a previously published website.

  • Where to look for info about creation of a complex web site ?

I'm more of an artist and graphic designer than web site creator but one of my clients now want to have what I believe is a very complex enterprise level web site for e-commerce.
They have a fairly clear idea in terms of user experience and features and I can help them with the graphic design part of it but they and I have no idea what it would take and how much it would cost for the development.  I would like to know how to find this information and will appreciate any advice and tips for selecting developers.

    Hi safder husain ,
For troubleshooting, please take steps as below:
Take a quick look in Central Administration. If the Content Database has been taken "offline" then it will halt any database editing (typically used for maintenance such as backing up / restoring or major
    farm config).
Check SQL .This can also happen if the Transaction Logs are full .. or you've run out of disk space.
Check if you have set a Site Collection Quota ... if the site collection exceeds the "quota" size then adding new content will be restricted.Go to Central Administration -> Application Management ->
Configure Quotas and Locks. Set the Site Lock Information to "Not Lock" (it had been set to " Read-only (blocks additions, updates, and deletions)”).
Please inform me freely if you have any questions.
    Thanks

I know you have very little time :-) but it would be usefull to know
    1. Feature matrix for Standard and Enterprise editions and how add on
products fit in. Would be great to have a "Professional" version somewhere
    between Standard and Enterprise.
    2. I am not sure I understand what $500 maintenance gives us. Above you
state that all owners of 2.2.2 license are entitlet for 2.2.x bug fixes,
patches etc. (which is fine I would expect product to be bugfixed and
maintained until a new major version is out).
Then you say Maintenance ($500) includes all bug fixes / patches and minor
release upgrades (all version 2.x.x releases) that I do not fully
    understand. D
oes 2.X.x represent major release? I think you also need to tell people what
    period this $500 will cover?
If one purchased a maintenance plan I would expect to receive next major
release (you need to plan your release cycle) so people can budget in
maintenence cost and pay $500 a year for example to have latest and greates
    version of Kodo
    3. Is maintenence fee the same for Standard and Enterprise? It does not
really make sense as the price of maintenence is almost the same as new
Standard license and probably higher than license upgrade cost
    4. What about license upgrade cost?
Bottom line need more info :-)
Is 2.2.2 build available for download?

    David and group,
The answer to this really depends on what happens with the specification,
when it will be released, and how different the specification will be
compared to the current version of the specification (0.95). There are a
number of things that we are waiting for from the specification team
including a final version of the specification and the test suite. There is
simply too much uncertainty around the specification to give you a
definitive answer. I assure you that when the specification is finalized,
we will recognize our current customer base in some manner.

    Hi Neelan,
As you know, JDO 1.0 is not yet released. When it is released, I'msure that SolarMetric will
upgrade Kodo to support any changes between the final version of 1.0 andthe current PFD 1 that Kodo
is based on. Will this upgrade, indeed will all versions of Kodo based onJDO 1.0, be 2.2.x
versions or is it possible, or likely, that the follow-on JDO 1.0compatible versions will be a
    higher level rev?

I wanted to clarify one bit about one of your questions (Number 2).
Purchasing a license gets you all the bug fixes and patches associated
    with
the release. Say you purchase Kodo JDO Standard Edition 2.2.2 but donot
purchase the Support and Maintenance Contract. In that case, you willget
30 days of free Email Support. In addition, you will also get all bugfixes
and patches associated with the 2.2 release (all 2.2.x releases) e.g.,
    2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.2.5, etc., but not 2.3.0.
If you choose to purchase the annual contract you get the same EmailSupport
for 1 year. In addition, you will get all minor releases as well as bug
fixes and patches associated with the 2. release (all 2.x.x releases)e.g.,
the bug fix releases for 2.2 (2.2.3, 2.2.4, 2.2.5) as well as any minor
    upgrades related to release 2 (e.g., 2.3.0, 2.3.1, 2.4.0), but not3.0.0.

Please not that the above are not planned releases just examples.

  • Web site administration

Recently I have lost the ability to access my CC Business Catalyst sites. Anybody else having trouble with this? Any solutions?
    Dale

I used to have my web sites that I have on BC on the side bar of CreativeCloud.com.
But I did get a notice of BC moving to Amazon's servers.
On August 31st the Business Catalyst North American datacenter will be relocated to the new Amazon Web Services infrastructure. As part of the migration process all sites located on our North American datacenter will experience an offline maintenance window of up to 8 hours. Please see below the full details of the maintenance and downtimes expected.
BC does not appear on the CC Desktop App... yet.
And now the link to BC from CC.com is gone.

  • Quick-time behavior at web-sites

Quick-time fails to open on web-sites when I go on-line from my Intel Core 2Gz machine. I get a white question mark super-imposed on a faded blue Quicktime Q. This doesn't happen with my Mac book Pro. so its something in the computer. Any ideas?

No questions are 'stupid' - none of us can know everything!
    What are permissions?
Every file and folder on a Mac OS X hard drive has a set of permissions—settings that determine which user(s) have access to each item, and exactly what that access is. For example, permissions dictate whether or not a particular user can open and edit a particular file. But permissions also determine which items the operating system—or specific parts of it—can access and modify, and which files are accessible by applications.
    What does repairing permissions do?
The Repair Disk Permissions function—the process that actually performs the task of repairing permissions—examines certain files and folders on your Mac’s hard drive to see if their current permissions settings are what Mac OS X expects them to be; if discrepancies are found, the offending permissions are changed to match the expected settings.
(In Mac OS X 10.3 and later, repairing permissions also performs one other, unrelated, task: If the invisible /tmp symbolic link—which is linked to the /private/tmp directory—is missing, the link will be recreated.)
Why is it necessary to repair permissions?
If permissions on particular files are “incorrect”—i.e., not what Mac OS X expects them to be or not what they need to be for your Mac’s normal operation—you can experience problems when the operating system tries to access or modify those files. For example, you may have trouble logging in to your account, printing, launching applications, or even starting up your Mac. Similarly, if an application—from Apple or a third-party developer—needs access to a particular file or folder to function, and the permissions on that item have changed in a way that prevents such access, the application may not function properly (or at all). The Repair Disk Permissions function can fix such problems by ensuring that certain files have the correct permissions.
There’s also a security element here: Many system-level files have permissions set a particular way so that applications or users that shouldn’t be meddling with those files can’t. If the permissions on certain system-level files somehow get changed so that access to those files is no longer restricted, you’ve got the potential for a major security issue. Repairing permissions can resolve such issues by resetting permissions on those files to prevent unauthorized access.
    How do I repair permissions?
The Repair Disk Permissions function is part of Apple’s Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). After launching Disk Utility, select the desired disk—generally your startup disk—in the list to the left, then click the First Aid tab. At the bottom of the First Aid panel, click the Repair Disk Permissions button. (You could instead use the Verify Disk Permissions option to preview any potential repairs before performing them, but for most users there’s little benefit from this extra step.)
Permissions can also be repaired via the shell (Terminal) by using the command sudo diskutil repairPermissions /. However, it’s unlikely that the typical user will ever need to perform the task in this manner. It’s useful if for some reason Disk Utility itself won’t launch, or for repairing permissions on a remote Mac when connected via Remote Login (SSH), but otherwise you’re just as well served using Disk Utility.
How does the Repair Disk Permissions function know what the “correct” permissions are?
When you use Apple’s Installer utility to install software (such as Mac OS X itself or an OS X update), the installation package (the .pkg file you double-click to begin installation, or that Software Update downloads in the background for an automatic installation) generally leaves behind a receipt—a smaller Mac OS X package that includes information about every file installed, including the permissions each file should have. This receipt is placed in /Library/Receipts. When you run the Repair Disk Permissions function, it examines the receipts in the /Library/Receipts directory of the disk being repaired—which means the feature works only on volumes with Mac OS X installed—and compares the information in the receipt with the actual files on your drive. If the Repair Disk Permissions function finds a file with permissions that differ from what a receipt claims they should be, that file’s permissions are reset to their receipt-specified values. (If you’re curious about the information contained in a receipt, the easiest way to view it is to use the utility Pacifist; simply drag and drop the appropriate receipt into the Pacifist window and you’ll be presented with a list of all files installed by the similarly-named installation package, along with each file’s original permissions.)
It’s worth noting here that although the function is called “Repair Disk Permissions,” what is actually happening is that files’ permissions are being reset or restored to a particular state. It’s possible—though not common—for a particular file’s permissions to differ from what a receipt claims they should be without those permissions actually being “broken.”
Are all files affected by Repair Disk Permissions?
No. As you may have inferred from the above description, only those files installed using OS X’s Installer utility and whose installation packages leave behind a proper receipt in /Library/Receipts are affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function. This means that most of the files affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function are system-level files, application files, or system add-ons—not applications installed by drag-and-drop, and not your documents or other user-level files.
If repairing permissions is useful in general, why doesn’t Apple recommend it as routine maintenance?
    Apple does, quite explicitly:
It’s a good idea to repair disk permissions as a regular maintenance task after upgrading or installing new software.
That’s taken from Mac Help—in both Panther and Tiger—right on your Mac. Similar statements can be found in other Support articles.

  • Scott Weichert's exemplary web site

Two threads have been deleted or censored and closed due to the attempt
by a third party to disrupt the forum.
I want to reiterate that I sincerely held the link to
    Scott Weichert's web site as
a prime example of a very well built website.
This in connection to GB having asked me how I would present the material contained in another thread that had been closed, also due to the intervention of the same aforementioned third party.
This is some of what I wrote (and fortunately saved as a PDF):
I pointed out Scott Weichert's link as an example of how to do things right. Things are very nicely presented, the typography is excellent, the text is eminently readable and the pages load extremely fast even on a mediocre-to-slowish connection.
The attempt by the aforementioned third party to suggest that this praise was something else was and remains a malicious intent designed to smear our forum host and impugn his reputation.
Thank you for the opportunity to set this straight.

    >Two threads have been deleted or censored and closed due to the attempt by a third party to disrupt the forum.
As a matter of fact, which is often missing in these posts, I requested that
one of Ramon's insulting and false posts be removed. It was the option of Forum Operations to delete the entire thread and another thread that I never mentioned to Forum Operations. Ramon cannot criticize a
third party for a disruption when
he played a significant role in the thread removal. Let's stop pretending we're victims.
There was never a dispute that Scott's site was well-designed.
Gary, you may want to consider a content management system or themed template like Scott has created for himself (although there are ready-made systems that non-developers can use). It makes authoring and maintenance much easier. Updates to site style are a breeze. The web design forum here is a good place to get ideas for this.

  • Safari doesn't open certain web sites

    Hi there,
I'm a web designer working on a new site. My clients say that their Mac which is running Safari 5.1.5 won't open their web site which is: http://www.adventuress.us
I've asked about 5 other people to see if they could open it up on a mac using Safari.  So far, everyone can open it except for my client.
Can you help me troubleshoot this?  The site is created with wordpress.  It's not redirecting.
I'm really not sure which Mac they have or their operating system.  I just chose two so that I could submit this ticket.
What in the world would stop them from being able to see the site? They can go to other sites.
    Thanks.

    Hi...
What in the world would stop them from being able to see the site?
Ask if they have anti virus software installed ..
It would help to know for sure which Mac OS X they have installed. Click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen. From the drop down menu click: About This Mac.
I'm running Lion v10.7.3 with Safari 5.1.5 on one Mac without any problems loading that site. Same with another Mac running Snow Leopard v10.6.8.
I am using OpenDNS which may help your client and is suggested by Apple > Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser redirects, blocks the flashback trojan, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222

  • My hard drive crashed recently and i can no longer see my web site address in the iWeb side bar

I can n o longer see my web site address in the iweb side bar, how can I relocate it so i can edit my website

Let me start with the general advise...
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • Can not open a particular web site

Hi, I always tried to open one web site and it used to open well in Firefox and IE. but since last few days it stopped opening both in FF and IE. It gives error as
    1. The connection has timed out The server at www.eng-tips.com is taking too long to respond.
2.If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
