Making a kernel PKGBUILD

Hello,
I tried to make my own kernel package with the abs system. I studied the wiki documentation (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cus … n_with_ABS)
After making all configurations in the PKGBUILD, I copied the "kernel126.install", kernel-config-file and the patches in /var/abs/local/kernel26-sn-client-04"
My PKGBUILD:
# Contributor: Flasher <[email protected]>
pkgname=kernel26-sn-client-04
pkgver=2.6.13
pkgrel=1
pkgdesc="The Linux Kernel 2.6.13.4 for sn-client-04 withpatches for softcam"
url="http://www.kernel.org"
depends=('module-init-tools')
install=kernel26.install

  • Kernel PKGBUILD naming

    Hi archers!
    I finally managed building a working kernel config and building the kernel with this PKGBUILD and it works fine so far.
    The only thing that disturbs me, is that the custom kernel's "name" (uname -r) and the /lib/modules dir are named "kernel26-custom-custom-custom" (note the three "-custom"s).
    In the PKGBUILD I only set "_pkg_base" to "kernel26" and "_cfgname" to "custom".
    During kernel configuration, I set "LOCALVERSION" to "-custom" as well.
    /boot files and everything is named just fine, but as I said, the kernel name is always screwed up with the triple "-custom".
    I'm not really good in bash but I think it's caused by these lines in the PKBGUILD:
    # set EXTRAVERSION to help use unique /lib/modules/ subdirectories
    _ker_make_ver=$(getvar "VERSION").$(getvar "PATCHLEVEL").$(getvar "SUBLEVEL")
    _ker_extraver=`echo $_idstr | sed "s|^$_ker_make_ver||"`
    # update EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile by adding our (for modules location)
    _oldline=$(cat Makefile | grep "^EXTRAVERSION")
    cat Makefile | sed "s|$_oldline|EXTRAVERSION\ =\ $_ker_extraver$_patchset$_cfgname|" > tmpMake
    mv tmpMake Makefile
    now, is this behaviour intended, did I just make some input mistake or is there an error in the pkgbuild?
    Thanks very much in advance!

    All right, I figured out that the first two "-custom"s are caused by this line in the PKGBUILD:
    cat Makefile | sed "s|$_oldline|EXTRAVERSION\ =\ $_ker_extraver$_patchset$_cfgname|" > tmpMake
    ( $_ker_extraver contains one and $_cfgname, of course, the other)
    The third one seems to be appended by the LOCALVERSION config setting, which should actually be the only one to be added I think.
    So would it be possible to just omit all of the PKGBUILD code quoted in the post above and let the -LOCALVERSION do the work for a unique name?
    EDIT: This actually works quite well, but I suppose problems might occur in other places then. No bash expert here?
    EDIT 2: When trying to compile the nvidia module afterwards, I also found out that
    # copy files necessary for later builds, like nvidia and vmware
    cp arch/i386/Makefile.cpu $startdir/pkg/usr/src/linux-$_idstr/arch/i386/
    was missing, but exists in the stock kernel PKGBUILD.
    Is this one acutally somehow out-dated or am I just too stupid to make it work correctly?

  • Kernel PKGBUILD force make menuconfig (SOLVED)

    Using an ABS kernel26 to build my own kernel package, but stuck on making menuconfig!
    I have my kernel, patches, PKGBUILD, etc... all collected in a directory on my desktop (ALL SET, READY TO GO)
    So, here's what i'd like to be able to do:
    #makepkg... [[ when makepkg runs i'd like to get to a terminal and make menuconfig before the process continues ]]
    Therefore i'd like the PKGBUILD file to specify that i complete make menuconfig myself before the makepkg continues:
    Okay, got it the sources have to be available to the makepkg script in order to do a make menuconfig!
    I'll collect all this together and produce a mini howto ASAP.

  • Making own kernel patches?

    Dear archers,
    I had to change a file (saa7134-card.c) in kernel source to make my Avermedia TV Tuner work. But i must try to change some code in the file several time. It's not a problem if i'm compiling the kernel by traditional way, but if i follow the arch way, it's so time consumed because i had to extract the original kernel source and then edit saa7134-card.c file again. Then, some questions pop-up in my mind...
    1. How do i edit a file in kernel source tarball and put it again in the tarball?
    2. How do i make my own kernel patch?
    3. Do pacman always extract the sources tarball and overwrite files in $startdir/src when i do makepkg? is it possible to skip that step in makepkg process?

    Your best bet would just be make a diff file and add that to your PKGBUILD. Just make the changes and save it under a different file name. Use diff to create the file and then use patch to apply it in your PKGBUILD. Here's how I do it
    patch --ignore-whitespace <$startdir/right-click.diff $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver/src/adesklets.c

  • 2 kernel PKGBUILDs in wiki?

    Hi all
    I'm thinking of trying my first custom kernel (I'm after the hdaps_protect patch), so went to the wiki, and found these:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … n_with_ABS
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cus … n_with_ABS
    Both pages give a PKGBUILD but I'm not sure which one is better, indeed both pages seem to be written as though the other doesn't exist.
    So, is there one page that supersedes the other, or are the two PKGBUILDs designed for different tasks? And in that case what's the difference?
    Jack

    Here the one I linked to you
    #DO NOT CHANGE INSIDE THIS BLOCK
    pkgver=$_kerver
    if [ ! -z "$_extraver" ]; then
    _scratch="_$_extraver"
    pkgver=$pkgver$_scratch
    _extraver=`echo "-$_extraver" | sed 's|_|-|'`
    fi
    pkgdesc="$_desc - ver: $_kerver$_extraver;"
    pkgname=$_pkg_base
    if [ ! -z "$_patchset" ]; then
    pkgdesc="$pkgdesc pset: $_patchset;"
    _patchset="-$_patchset"
    pkgname="$pkgname$_patchset"
    fi
    if [ ! -z "$_cfgname" ]; then
    pkgdesc="$pkgdesc cfg: $_cfgname;"

    pkgname="$pkgname$_cfgname"
    fi
    pkgdesc="$pkgdesc bld: $pkgrel"
    _idstr="$_kerver$_extraver$_patchset$_cfgname"
    Then after md5 check you get build() {
    Where as with the other one it enters build almost straight away, but as said I'm far from sure.
    build() {
    echo "_pkg_base: $_pkg_base"
    echo "_patchset: $_patchset"
    echo "_cfgname: $_cfgname"
    echo "_kerver: $_kerver"

    So I'm currently compiling a kernel from ABS, and its been running som docbook stuff for 2-3 hours now which I've never seen before when compiling a kernel with ABS.

    wow, thats good to hear. Took ages compiling with it there.

    is this possible? and is there a how-to , or does anyone have concise directions.. I would like to install wine to run a few of the windows apps I like.. but wine32-bin is a pain to install and maintain, plus if there's strange issues, since the repo is unsupported, i dont want to get in a bind if something goes haywire during an update..
    or is there a 64bit version of wine yet? even an alpha,beta?

  • A PKGBUILD that allows multiple installed kernels

    Hi All,
    I've had so many people help me with so many things here at Arch, hopefully this will be useful to someone.
    What is it:
    I've got a kernel PKGBUILD file that allows me to build and install as many different kernels as desired, as long as each one has a unique $pkgver-$pkgrel setting.

    for i in `find . -name "Kconfig*"`; do
    mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/usr/src/linux-$pkgver/`echo $i | sed 's|/Kconfig.*||'`
    cp $i $startdir/pkg/usr/src/linux-$pkgver/$i
    done
    cd $startdir/pkg/usr/src/linux-$pkgver/include && ln -s asm-i386 asm
    cd $startdir/pkg/usr/src
    # create a unique subdirectory under /usr/src/
    mv linux-$pkgver linux-$pkgver-$pkgrel
    chown -R root.root $startdir/pkg/usr/src/linux-$pkgver-$pkgrel
    cd $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/$pkgver-$pkgrel &&
    (rm -f build; ln -sf /usr/src/linux-$pkgver-$pkgrel build)
    How it works:
    The primary thing I've usually done is wipe out my custom kernel by inadvertantly overwriting the loadable modules in the /lib/modules/$pkgver directory with a pacman -Su.
    The reason for this is that the current arch kernel build does not set the EXTRAVERSION variable in the kernel top level makefile. Therefore all kernels of the same $pkgver use the same /lib/modules/$pkgver/ subdirectory.
    The above PKGBUILD sets EXTRAVERSION to the $pkgrel variable.
    This causes the loadable module tree to be in a /lib/modules/$pkgver-$pkgrel/ directory.
    There are two other places where kernels experience file conflicts:
    /boot/
    /usr/src/
    The /boot/ files: vmlinuz, System.map and kconfig are given unique names by appending the $pkgver-$pkgrel string.
    The /usr/src/linux-$pkgver/ directory is moved to /usr/src/linux-$pkgver-$pkgrel/.
    This allows the loadable kernel, the loadable modules and the stripped source headers to be in a unique place for each different kernel. Therefore multiple kernels can be loaded concurrently and the desired one may be chosen at boot time by grub.
    The only thing a little weird about this, is the $pkgname variable. pacman will only load one version of each $pkgname, so for multiple kernels to be loaded, they each have to have a unique $pkgname. This is accomplished by appending the $pkgver and $pkgrel to the $pkgname. This is fine, except it gives a slightly weird name for the resulting kernel package file. It has the format:
    kernel$pkgver$pkgrel-$pkgver-$pkgrel.pkg.tar.gz
    That is, the $pkgver and $pkgrel appear in the package file name twice. This also shows if one issues:
    pacman -Q | grep kernel -
    Which yields for me:
    kernel2.6.6custom1 2.6.6-custom1
    kernel2.6.61 2.6.6-1
    kernel26 2.6.7-1
    This command could only have shown one package before, now it shows that I currently have installed: a custom 2.6.6 kernel, the stock arch 2.6.6 kernel built with the above PKGBUILD and the current arch kernel26 package.
    I may choose between any of these at boot time with grub. And as an added bonus, the next time I pacman -Su I won't wipe out my custom /lib/modules subdirectory 8-)
    All of this assumes the supply of your own custom config file as in the arch wiki Building the Kernel in ABS instructions.
    Idle thoughts:
    It would sure be nice if something like this could be adopted for the stock arch kernels. Unlike most other packages it is often desirable to have multiple versions of the kernel package installed at once.
    I wonder if it is practical for pacman to allow multiple versions of the same $pkgname to be installed concurrently if the $pkgname-$pkgver-$pkgrel string is unique and the different versions do not have file conflicts?
    The other major package I could see this being applied to is gcc. It would be really cool to load different cross and other configurations of gcc concurently.
    I find one of the most diifficult things needed to get a workstation running is getting all of the correct kernel modules built in. It seems that most PCs today have all the major features built in to the motherboard chipset: graphics controller, sound, usb, ethernet, etc. If it was possible to build a database of custom kernels, one for each major chipset, then one could be chosen by hardware detection at install time. This would provide the benefits of a custom kernel in an autoload fashion.
    Just dreaming...
    Conclusion:
    I'm not sure how this strategy fits in with the bigger pictiure of running pkg repositories, building dependent packages, who knows what else.
    The thing I hope to add next is automatically adding and removing entries into: /boot/grub/menu.lst when the kernel package is installed and removed. The $pkgdesc string is perfect for serving as the title line.
    Hopefully this can be useful to others, it has helped me clean up my multi-kernel mess here.
    Thanks Again for such an awesome distro...

    p.s Arch Rulz!

    Thank you, I tried to set something up like this in the wiki, but never tested it and it didn't work for some users. You've tested it well?
    If so, you can copy it over to the wiki (edit or overwrite the Kernel compile with ABS wiki entry), or I can.
    Thanks again, its much appreciated.

  • Kernel-fglrx-custom: Please could someone check/improve my PKGBUILD

    I decided to share a script as it has been very useful to me.  I have never written a PKGBUILD before and it took some attempts to make a working one, so please could someone check the PKGBUILD over and let me know how horrible it is and what I should do differently
    https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/kern … ustom-git/
    It installs fine on my PC, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not using the PKGBUILD file properly.
    Last edited by windows_me (2013-08-27 17:18:45)

    There's a couple of things I would change:
    1) The name doesn't really tell the user what the package is for. "kernel-fglrx-legacy" would probably be more helpful.
    2) Rather than pulling a script that will then pull down the kernel package, why not use the existing kernel PKGBUILD in the ABS? You can easily modify that PKGBUILD to apply your script/patches.

  • Manual Kernel Compilation

    Hi, I'm trying to patch and compile my own kernel, in the hope that I will be able to then transfer the process to makepkg, but I keep getting an error during "make" or "make bzImage". The last few lines that give the errors seem to be to do with bfs, with some unused variables.

    The best route is definitely making your own PKGBUILD once you feel comfortable trying that.
    I've made one for my own personal kernel package (being very pedantic about such things), if you'd like to take a look and mod it to your liking.  It's a bit cleaner than the `kernel26' PKGBUILD.
    Be sure to track http://projects.archlinux.org/linux-2.6-ARCH.git/ and http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … l26/trunk/ for new Arch patches and config file changes.
    I don't remember why I commented out the firmware packaging and don't want to look into it right now
    So yeah, in case it helps you.

  • Kernel The Arch Way

    Hi,
    after some problems with alsa and #archlinux irc talk I decided to try and build my own kernel. As I see it's lot of learning. I already read The Arch Way, ABS - The Arch Build System, The Arch package making HOW-TO - with guidelines, man makepkg, dependencies thread, makepkg/abs tutorial thread, PKGBUILD help, Arch CVS & SVN PKGBUILD guidelines, Arch Packaging Standards, Kernel Compilation, Kernel Compilation with ABS, Custom Kernel Compilation with ABS, Kernel Patches and Patchsets. And at last I read this thread and I feel the same... Btw I thing kernel compilation also has lots to do with mkinitcpio, right?
    I want to build kernel that would have all necessary stuff for my hw configuration built in. Thats the fastest boot, right? But actually all this wiki stuff got me more confused than I was before .
    What would be the best way? I know all the hw details, so just do 'make menuconfig' and select everything as built in (*), maybe add some patches and automate this using one of example PKGBUILDs?
    I'm still reading forums and googling but I believe some of you can point me faster.

    It is a bit of learning at first.  Once you understand how it works it's very simple.  There is no shortcut, I'm afraid, it seems like you're looking for one...  If there was one it would be outlined in the wiki most likely.
    As far as building kernel with all the hw stuff built in...  IMO, it's not a good idea.  This is something that needed to be done in the past when there was no way to autoload system specific modules at boot.  Boot time benefits would be negligible.  The kernel wouldn't be any faster either.  And you would have to recompile every time there is a kernel update if you wanted to keep up with Arch repos - the net result would be wasting time and speed.
    Kernel compilation itself has nothing to do with mkinitcpio - mkinitcpio is only necessary to generate boot image which happens after the kernel is already compiled; pacman will do it for you completely automatically if you customize the Arch kernel PKGBUILD instead of compiling manually.

  • Attn: ALL APPLE PORTABLE OWNERS -Macbook Pro, MacBook Air Apple portable slowdown / kernel high CPU solution

    Attn: ALL APPLE PORTABLE OWNERS -MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini slowdown kernel / high CPU use problem and solution.
    YOU COULD FRY YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU DO NOT FIX THIS PROBLEM SO PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE!
    YOUR MAC WILL THANK YOU
    Hey all.
    Like many of you I've got a newer Apple portable which slows down to an unusable level for an unknown reason. In my case a 13" mid 2009 Intel MacBook Pro Core 2 duo laptop. After many failed attempts to figure out what this nutty problem is I have discovered the problem, the solution and I have solved this for my own MacBook Pro. Since this fix it has been working immediately and consistently -without issue
    I am sharing this with you in hopes that you to can fix your Apple portable yourself or so you know what to tell the Apple techs so they can quickly fix your Mac from this wacky and unfortunate kernel CPU hogging problem.
    User Software Symptoms :
    Your Apple portable computer periodically for an unknown reason slows down making everything frustratingly slow. This happens even when running previous apps that were never a problem; things that your Mac should be able to handle easily but for some reason now it can't.
    Slowdown most often happens during high CPU use such as gaming, video playback/editing, etc. or when running multiple apps (even non CPU intensive apps) at the same time.
    Possible Hardware Symptoms:
    Your computer is making more noise than it did previously.
    Your computer occasionally makes more noise but then gets quieter.
    Your computer is always extremely quiet (too quiet) even during high CPU apps -worst case scenario.
    It feels hotter than it normally does. Test: After several minutes of the slowness/high kernel CPU touch the computer to feel if it's hotter than normal.
    Looking at Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder) shows the kernel_task is going bonkers eating up CPU but you have no idea why.
    After trying many different things to solve this problem such as :
    PR ram reset, SMC reset, fresh OS install of 10.5 and 10.6 on external hard-drives, calling and speaking to various Apple tech people who had no ideas/solutions, etc. I had no luck.
    Btw, if you're having the symptoms I've decscribed above I would not run the Apple Hardware check (read below as to why). You could fry your Mac!
    After much testing I found the problem :
    It is my belief that "recent" Apple portable computers are using low quality internal fans which soon stop working!
    Fail time period seems to be about 1.0 years to 2.5 years of use but this fail rate could vary depending on use.
    First noticeable symptoms (depending on what you notice) could be computer slowdown or your fan is making more noise than it normally does. This is your fan's lubrication slowly eroding making your fan spin slower and less smooth resulting in the louder noise and slower rpm spin speed. The slower fan spin speed means less cooling is happening for your computer. The effect on your computer is that the CPU and other chips are heating up! Overheating to be more specific. When your computer's chips overheat they get wonky and screw things up. Most often this seems to have the effect of making the kernel hog CPU resulting in a frustratingly slow user experience! Heat kills computer chips and it is extremely bad for them. Extreme overheat or repeated overheating has been said to shorten the life of computer chips or in extreme cases even fry them completely!
    The longer this goes on without being fixed your fan loses more lubrication and spins slower and slower cooling lesser and lesser resulting in your CPU heating up more and more possibly shortening the life of your Mac! Eventually your fan will stop completely and you could fry your chips! My fan stopped completely and my MBP was running very quietly, too quietly. Luckily I did not fry my chips because I was avoiding using high CPU apps because I knew something was wrong due to the massive slow down and wonkiness when I'd run them.
    Side Note:I'm a bit concerned about all those Mac mini servers which may be using the same defective low quality fans which cannot be easily serviced by their owners as they are co-located in some server facility. One positive thing is those facilities are usually well airconditioned keeping temps low.
    I suggest you do not run the Apple hardware test if you suspect your computer is overheating because the hardware test can seriously heat up your Mac! I tried running this test and my Mac got so hot I had to shut it down forcefully and I was concerned I damaged the chips. If you want to run the Apple hardware check make sure your CPU temperature is ok and that your fan works well before you run the test.
    IF YOU DON'T FIX THIS PROBLEM YOU COULD FRY YOUR COMPUTER DUE TO HEAT DAMAGE!
    DO NOT IGNORE THIS PROBLEM YOUR MACS LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT!
    First you need to properly diagnose this problem and see if your CPU is getting to hot and you need to see if your fans are spinning at high rpms giving proper cooling, or if they are spinning at low rpms when running high intensive apps as your CPU temp increases.
    TEST IF YOUR FAN(s) IS WORKING CORRECTLY :
    Unfortunately Apple does not include CPU temperature reading software nor fan rpm speed software that I am aware of.
    However, There are two free ways that I know of to check your CPU tempurature and your fan speed :
    One app shows fan speed, and CPU heat, etc.
    One app shows fan speed, CPU heat and allows you to adjust your fan speed settings.
    One app is a dashboard widget, the other is a system preference.
    I suggest you download both of these to check your computer statistics.
    http://www.eidac.de/?p=134
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
    http://fan-control.en.softonic.com/mac
    I am not exactly sure what proper CPU temperatures are for the different Apple computers and this will change given different CPU loads.
    My MBP doesn't seem to function properly with anything around 90 degrees or higher (celcius).
    It seems when the fan is operating normally the CPU temp should not stay above 78 degrees even under heavy load, at least with the apps I'm running in the room temperature I'm in.
    I can post back later with more specific temps under longer load, etc. but I wanted to get this post up for people to read as soon as possible so they don't fry their Macs.
    If a bad fan is your problem :
    THERE ARE ONLY TWO SOLUTIONS FOR THIS PROBLEM :
    Fix or replace your fan so it cools the CPU and other chips properly.
    I fixed my fan myself and I didn't need to buy a new one. Total cost was about $8.00 because I had to buy a #00 sized screwdriver and had it shipped to me. Price includes shipping.
    On my mid 2009 model MacBook Pro fixing the fan was incredibly easy :
    Before I started doing this I wasn't 100% this was the problem so I decided to try to fix my fan instead of ordering a new one and replacing it. As it turns out I didn't need a new fan, I only needed to clean the existing fan and relube it's axl so it could spin easier like when it was new.  It also didn't make sense to buy a brand new fan from an Apple authorized parts reseller selling me the same low quality fan for $49.00 which would probably fail in 2 years again. Prices for new comparable fans from different manufactures range from about $15.00 USD + shipping to around $49.00 USD + shipping depending on where you order them from and what brand you get.
    How to fix / replace your internal fan on a mid 2009 MacBook Pro :
    Please note : I am not a hardware technician, nor expert. If you decide to fix your Mac yourself you do so at your own risk through no fault of my own. Prior to opening up your Mac you should google around and learn how to do it correctly and safely so you won't damage your Mac. For example, it is possible for you to damage your Mac by static electricity from your body. To avoid this I believe proper procedure is that you wear a 'ground strap' (around your wrist) which  you clip to your Mac's metal body so your body will not excude a charge into your Mac. I believe the idea here is to keep your body's charge level and your Mac's similar. Since I do not have a ground strap and fixing/replacing the fan doesn't require touching any chips I did not wear a ground strap during my fan fix. What I did was periodically repeatedly touch the metal case of my MBP hoping that would be enough and it was. Avoid unecessary actions that can build up a static charge in you. Once I started the repair I did not walk around the room building up an electrical charge in my body. Walking on carpet can often build up a large charge in us so it is better to be avoided while working on your Mac. Certain clothing can build up static charges. Combing hair, etc. If you need to get up from your repair when you come back make sure you first touch the Mac's metal case and not anything inside.
    Now that we're done with the scary paranoia, below you will find some instructions on how I fixed my MBP's internal fan
    Before you begin:
    Check out someone's video (not mine) on how to remove / replace the fan (but not take it apart and repair it):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AghE9newvbs
    Check out someone's web page (not mine) on how to replace the fan in a mid 2009 MacBook Pro:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-MacBook-Pro-13-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2009-Fan/ 1338/1
    How to repair your mid 2009 MacBook Pro fan:
    Make sure you are in a 'secure' environment. No pets, no kids running around, no drinks near the Mac, etc.
    Make sure your computer is unplugged from it's power supply and turned off. NOT slept. Totally off / powered down.
    1. Get a size #00 phillips screwdriver (Hobby store, Radioshack, Amazon).
    2. Open up your MBP by unscrewing the bottom (yes flip it over so it's resting upsidedown). Note where each screw goes because some are different lengths. I placed each one around my MBP where they go, insuring I know their order (don't jumble them up). Note which direction your MBP is facing when it's upside down so if you spin it around while working on it you still know where the screws go.
    2b. Some recommend removing the MBP's battery but I didn't do this step. You probably should, just to be safe. Follow the online instructions from the web page I listed about disconnecting the battery.
    3. Unscrew the fan's 3 holding screws.
    4. Unplug the fan's electrical connection (lift it straight up off the board). If you need to you can try to pry it up while you lift with a non metal/non electrical conductive object like a spudger if you have one or -perhaps a pen cap. Before you remove it, look closely at how it's attached so when you put it back on you won't wonder if you're doing it correctly. There's only one way it can go because it cannot fit 'the wrong way' but looking at it closely will make you feel more confident popping it back on when the time comes.
    5. Remove the fan - it easily lifts out.
    6. Take the fan apart by unscrewing it's one screw then unlatching the  plastic clips which hold it together.
    7. Seperate the fan blades from the housing. Lift the fan blades off of the fan housing by pulling it straight out away from the housing.
    8. Clean off the dust that's gathered. A can of compressed air helps here (I didn't have one). I used a little brush from my electric shaver kit which worked well. Once you've removed all the dust from the fan and surrounding areas proceed to the next step.
    9. Reapply new lubrication. You need less than 1 drop. Be sure it covers the entire fan blade axl as this is what needs to be well lubricated. Make sure there isn't excess oil that will fly around when the axl/fan spins at high rpms. I used the only oil I had which was olive oil (for cooking!) but I do not suggest this. At the time I was doing this I didn't know my fan was the problem so I wasn't even sure I was going to relube it. You should probably use something more appropriate perhaps like 3 in 1 oil. A good idea would be to call the manufatures of these little fans and ask them. Maybe a hobby store knows of good lubricants for these purposes?
    DO NOT use things like WD 40 as it's not a long term lubricant or so I've read.
    10. Once your fan is now clean and oiled (make sure there isn't too much oil) reassmble the fan.
    Push the fan blades/axl back into the housing shaft. Give it a few spins with your finger.
    Screw together the fan housing then reclip the clips.
    11. Place the now reassembled fan back into your Mac and screw it in place (3 screws).
    12. Reattach the fan's electrical wiring by gently pushing it into place. Make sure you've got the right end facing down before you push it in place.
    13. Once your Mac's internals are clean and reassembled, place the rear cover back on your Mac and screw it in place.
    14. Double check you didn't forget anything like screws, tools, etc.
    15. Boot up your Mac and monitor the temperature and fan speed using those programs.
    Compare the previous temps/fan speed to the current temp/fan speed.
    Run a high CPU intensive app where your computer has been slowing down.
    You should now have a happy Mac
    If you have this problem and this solution fixed it for you please post in this thread letting me and everyone else know!
    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.

  • MacBook pro 8,2 late-2011 after series of kernel panics and video glitches stopped booting

    Hello, friends... I am shattered, my MacBook Pro stopped booting today. It all started two days ago, when I came to India and got USB modem dongle from Tata Docomo. It was making Lion kernel panic whenever it was connected to Internet, but had no effect while disconnected or unplugged from the laptop. Then yesterday I had a kernel panic while playing a video in VLC, then while using Skype, and after a while I figured out the pattern, it would crash every time computer switched on the graphic card instead of the on-board CPU graphics. It would also crash with striped blue screen and misplace it horizontally. All this time I was looking for the solution on the internet, and ran two hardware tests, both normal and extended, both showed no issues, tried booting into safe mode getting the striped blue kernel panic screen after the progress bar filled. Resetting the ram also didn't help. Now it will not boot at all, only the hardware test is still working. After the logo screen in normal mode it just goes power off or hangs in grey screen for infinity.
    Please, I need your help guys, I'm desperate, went to India for a few months and laptop breaking down almost straight away, and I'm also a dj, so its like a musical instrument to me, that I cannot work without...
    Again - MacBook Pro 8,2 Late-2011, 2,4 ghz, 750gb hdd, 4gb ram, ati 1gb graphic card and running Lion 10.7.3, thanks!
