Malware on firefox?

So I was just browsing the Internet using Firefox and I got this popup:
The first pop up screen:
Notice: if your computer has been running slower than normal, it may be infected with Viruses, Adware or Sypware.
MalwareAlarm will perform a quick and completely free scan of your system for malicious programs.
Download MalwareAlarm for FREE now!"
I didn't know what to do and it scanned for "viruses" but then I closed it and did not do any repairs. I honestly have no idea what this was. How can I check my computer to see if it's clean? I am new to Mac and did not even know that this is an issue. Are there programs you can run to clean your system or at least check and see if anything got on it?

Expanding on what Mike said, such messages are indeed a scam, intended to try and panic you into buying their antivirus/antispyware product. Some such sites are known to actually install spyware on your Windows systems (Macs are at present unaffected) when you run these "free" cleanup services, and then charge you for their "protection" software to remove it. Ignore any such messages you get when surfing the web, regardless of whether you're running a Mac or a Windows system.
At this time there have been no confirmed Mac OS X viruses (subject to the semantic debate about whether the iChat exploit is properly classified as a virus or a trojan horse), very few trojans and no adware or spyware. I therefore do not feel that antivirus or antispyware software is necessary at this time. It's never wise to become complacent, though, so security precautions are not wasted. In addition, it's possible for someone to inadvertently forward a Windows virus to a PC user though you'd have to do it manually, and said Windows virus cannot infect the Mac.
If you do decide you wish to run antivirus software, I think that the donationware clamXav that Hiten suggested should be more than enough provided you remember to scan your system from time to time.
If you are running Windows on your system, either via BootCamp, Parallels Workstation or another solution, then that copy of Windows is subject to all the myriad exploits common to the Windows world, so you need to take full precautions, including running both antivirus and antispyware software.
Regards.

  • How to remove blinkx popup adware/malware from Firefox?

This morning I noticed that my Firefox browser was constantly being interrupted by in-window popups for a site called cdn.blinkx.com/uvp-0.2.1/applications/blank.php. It opens these pages about every 20 seconds, but since updating Firefox it appears to have slowed down. Still, I would like to find the adware responsible and remove it for security reasons. The site itself doesn't appear to do anything - just a blank black page - but it is very annoying and can make the browser almost unusable. I have strong reason to believe this is adware or malware. I have not really done any unusual downloads recently, and my antivirus software ClamXav did not spot it. If anyone could help solve this problem I would be very grateful.

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:

    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Malware and Firefox automatic update. Safe?

I have the same malware problems as everyone else. It seems that Firefox is especially prone. The popup windows that ask to update Firefox are annoying but they can be handled. I am worried about the automatic update. Is it safe? If Mozilla can communicate with my computer automatically why can't a malware installer? As of late I am having problems with options changing. Why would an update change my options settings? They get changed. I am just worried about the level of security afforded by Mozilla. Maybe it's time to move on!!

hello, automatic updates happen over an encrypted secure connection with a update server at mozilla - downloaded pieces of update are checked for integrity and won't be installed otherwise. this is no infection vector for malware...
also updates won't change your settings in most cases. you didn't describe in particular what kind of setting changed but if its the homepage or your search provider this is usually a sign of adware/malware present on a system:
#please go to the firefox ''menu ≡ > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
#also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
#finally, run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner], which are specialised in adware and browser hijackers.

  • Australian federal police malware/virus - firefox

2 days ago I bought a brand new MacBook Pro, last night I tried to open Firefox and the Australian Federal Police Malware/Virus blocked the page asking for $300. I turned it off by holding down the power button. i turned it on today and firefox opened and couldn't recover the current page 'AFP' and now all seems fine. I'm aware there probably is still something in the background. How do I find out and how do I get rid of it. All of the instructions I can find online are for PC or for Mac but using the safari browser.
    PLEASE HELP

Thanks for the checkmark, but now I must post an addendum thanks to an apparent dumb move by Mozilla today.
They released Firefox v23 and removed the option to disable JavaScript via Preferences->Content, so...
I haven't fully tested this yet (since I haven't found any of those infected sites yet), but in order to disable JavaScript in Firefox you must now type "about:config" without the quotes in the address (URL) bar. It will give you a warning about voiding the warrantee, whatever that's supposed to mean, just agree to "be careful".
Now type "javascript.enabled" without quotes in the search window and double-click the word "true" in the Value column of the first line with that Preference Name, changing it to "false".
After backing out of the infected page go through the last two steps again changing "false" to "true" to re-enable JavaScript.

  • Malware infected firefox after i opened a email

Back around September 21st i opened an email in my Yahoo spam box thinking it was a legitimate email about my mortgage application when all of a sudden my computer and Firefox stopped working for a few seconds. I knew something malicious must have been installed. Ever since, my computer has been running slower and every once in a while will hang up. I have to wait a few seconds before the computer is responsive again.

I'm going to guess this coupon was a PDF file. There are two things you can do:
Wait until Friday, and update to Firefox 29.0.1 which fixes this issue [[Update Firefox to the latest version]]. I recommend this if you can wait two days to print PDF's
If you can't wait, [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]] can help you change your PDF viewer to one that can print.

  • Firefox.exe suddenly only 2 KB (and IE 1 KB) & flagged up as malware

On January 13 (2015), I was surprised to find my Kaspersky anti-virus software (Pure 3.0 at the time) flagging up the following as malware (trojan):
    firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe HEUR:Trojan.WinLNK.StartPage.gena
    iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe HEUR:Trojan.WinLNK.StartPage.gena
    eBay Sidebar for Firefox.lnk C:\Users\David\Desktop\eBay Sidebar for Firefox.lnk HEUR:Trojan.WinLNK.StartPage.gena
I followed the instructions to quarantine and re-boot. No problem. After re-boot, I could not access Firefox and discovered that it had indeed been quarantined - along with IE (which I rarely use) and eBay Sidebar for Firefox (which I haven't used in a long time). On restoring these, they are again identified as malware. Further investigation revealed that firefox.exe was only 2 KB in size - and IE was only 1KB.
Kaspersky advised to upgrade to Total Security, which I did and this stopped identifying the files as malware. Full virus checks, including from safe mode, revealed nothing. Running a suite of recommended anti-malware programs did pick up a limited number of bits and pieces (and which I deleted) that Kaspersky didn't, although my research on the net points to them all being the kind of things that produce unwanted adverts on browsers .... not anything that would wipe or rename programs (I didn't see any unwanted ads, though, possibly because of my settings in Firefox, Kaspersky and NoScript).
Kaspersky feels firefox.exe was corrupted (well at 2 KB, it's certainly not right) - although what corrupted it is another question. All other files in \Mozilla Firefox seem to be there, and I have no issues with any other software or files on my PC (just these three). Yet the same thing happened to IE at the same time. That makes a failing hard drive very unlikely indeed - but it does make me suspicious that there was *something* that deliberately did this, which Kaspersky did not pick up. However it would be unusual for decent anti-virus software like Kaspersky to miss something. Further, the same issue should have been occurring widely around the same time, because if everyone around the world were losing their browsers it would have made the news - not to mention advertising malware that corrupts both browsers being rather self-defeating!!
Incidentally, the desktop shortcuts have been replaced by the default Windows icon for programs that don't have a custom-made shortcut. And clicking on what was the Firefox shortcut opens a DOS box, that closes immediately; IE does the same but a "16 bit MS DOS Subsystem" error box appears (those were the days!) with:
    C:\Users\Public\Desktop\Internet Explorer.lnk
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS: 123f IP:012d OP: 8f af 9f 6e ba Choose 'Close' to terminate this application.
[Clicking 'close' or 'ignore' both close the DOS box - and that's it. No virus or anything similar is picked up and four anti-malware programs I'm using now show my system to be clean]
    So my questions are:
    (1) Any thoughts as to what happened?
    (2) I need to get Firefox working again. Can I simply copy firefox.exe from another machine and replace the existing 2 KB firefox.exe, and everything should be fine, as it was before .... or is it not as simple as that?? (I understand Firefox keeps preferences, etc., in separate files).
Thanks in advance for any comments.
    Dave

Sorry you have had this problem
It my be possible and work if you overwrite the problem ''firefox.exe''
However that could cause problems and the usual solution would be to download and install Firefox again from an official site, and using a clean install involving deleting the existing program files. (CARE leave the Firefox profile folders and files alone. In fact it would be worthwhile, as a ''belts braces'' precaution; locating and backing them up first )
    * See [[Firefox keeps crashing at startup#w_try-a-clean-install]]'''_try-a-clean-install'''
    * [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
** [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_finding-your-profile-without-opening-firefox]]'''_finding-your-profile-without-opening-firefox'''
As for what happened, you have given a well reasoned and intelligent summary but after the event it is going to be almost impossible to pin it down. Sometimes AV does flag false positives especially temporarily &/Or if not fully updated.
    ===Clean Reinstall ===
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from [https://www.mozilla.org mozilla.org] (or choose the download for your operating system and language from [https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ this page]) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click the close button [[Image:Close 29]]).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [[Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems#w_5-reinstall-firefox|here]].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your [[Profiles|Firefox profile]] data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>

This is probably a genuine offer to install Firefox 5 beta. You mention that you are using Firefox 4.0 beta 4, those who have installed a beta version of Firefox 4 are being offered the beta version of Firefox 5.
Firefox 5 is due for release on June 21st.

I noticed the file "mswsock.dll" mentioned so I looked for issues with it. Apparently there are issues with malware and Firefox and that file. I have scanned and it found nothing, plus this issue has existed in three formats of my drive and windows re-installs (for other reasons, I didn't format and re-install just to make sure there was no malware) so I'm pretty sure there are no problems with malware.
I am running a Minecraft server and I have a static IP set up, but I've been doing this for three years without issues so I don't think that's the issue either.
I have tried disabling all plugins. Still crashes and crashes Windows with it.
I have run Memtest86+ and the windows memory tester. Not a memory issue.

Like I said before, sorry if this is vague. Let me know if you need more info and hopefully I'll be less impatient with this site then.
I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit. My full specs are here: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/FfJxFT (I've upgraded to Windows 8 and replaced the dead hard drive now. My new drives are a 120Gb Samsung 840 EVO and a 1TB Seagate Barracuda).
    Thanks.

  • Firefox is not showing up at all, I will click on the application and it start to work but then after 2 seconds, its stops working.

I will try to start firefox and then it stops working. It will work for about 2 seconds and then it goes to a blank screen. The screen is transparent and i can see my desk top threw firefox. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it and firefox still will not work on my computer. I have run scans on my computer as well to see if it was a virus that was preventing it from running. If anyone could help me I would be very greatful.

hello see-saw-sally, [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/940393#answer-377118 from another user] we found out that this might be related to malware active on your pc. please close all firefox windows and try [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|running firefox in safemode]] (by pressing the shift key while you're starting it). in firefox safemode go to firefox > addons > extensions and remove the entry named "Codec v1.0" or any other addons that look suspicious & you have not installed intentionally. afterwards see if you can run firefox normally again...
please also do an in-depth scan of your system with the security software already in place and/or a different tool like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & keep firefox and your plugins up-to-date in order to stay safe on the web.

  • Firefox crashes as soon as I open it, it stays open long enough to see that a bogus toolbar was added on and I suspect that's the source of the problem, but how can I remove the add-on if I can't get FF to stay open long enough to get to the tool bar?

I downloaded Vuze last night and I think it must have installed some malware because firefox hasn't worked since and a Vuze tool bar has made its way into the browser. I am running a malware scanner but its not coming up with anything. Is there any way to manually delete add-ons or plug-ins or whatever they are without being in the program itself? Thanks!

I don't have a good sense of what is going wrong.
Was Firefox stable in step 3 -- open with no sessionstore.js file and then exit?
If that was stable, it might be easiest to cull the open URLs from your sessionstore.js file and re-open the most important ones manually. You will lose the ''detail'' of your session on those pages (e.g., data you had entered into a form), but if that's okay, it might be the next step.
I found a script on mozillaZine that will extract URLs from the sessionstore.js file; I just changed the formatting of the output. To run the script:
    (1) Return to your profile folder and rename sessionstore.js to sessionstore.old again, then copy it to a convenient location
    (2) Start Firefox (it should be in a new session)
    (3) Open the following link, select all (Ctrl+a), copy (Ctrl+c) to copy the script to the clipboard: http://dev.jeffersonscher.com/sessionstore_reader.txt
    (4) Open the <s>Error Console</s> <u>Browser Console</u> (Ctrl+Shift+j), click next to <s>Code</s> <u>the caret (>>)</u> and paste, then press Enter <s>or click Evaluate</s>
    (5) A file selection window should appear. Navigate to the convenient location and open sessionstore.old from there.
    (6) As long as the file is not corrupted, a new tab should open with a list of all the URLs the script found in the file. You can save this page for future reference if desired. Also, you can close the <s>Error</s> <u>Browser</u> Console now.
