Managing project to fit on DVD

I am new to FCEHD and have been working my way through Tom Wolsky's book. Question: I got carried away and imported and edited a project that has entirely too much content to fit on a DVD. Ultimately, I would like to make three separate DVDs (one for Halloween material, one for Thanksgiving, etc). Now that I've imported all the material and have edited it, what do I do to parse the relevant sections out so I can export to iDVD to eventually burn to a DVD. Sorry for any confussion in the question; it is difficult to articulate.

You can fit up to two hours of FCE timeline using iDVD.
Add chapter markers to segment it or export different movies from the timeline. The choice is yours.

Compressed Project won't fit on DVD

I edited a FCP project that ended up timing at 1hr. 59 minutes, and 27 seconds.
I exported the project using Compressor, and chose my presets as MPEG-2 120min High Quality encode (choosing "All" for both video and audio).
I then brought this into DVD Studio Pro and proceeded to make the menus and chapters, etc.
First Question: I was surprised that the compressed audio and video were seperate (an aiff and then a m2v). Is that supposed to happen? Did I do something wrong since I had to add the aiff file seperately to the DVD?
Also, now that I have both on there, I'm being told it's too large to fit on the 4.5 GB DVD. My MPEG-2 file is 2.92 GB and my aiff file is 1.28 GB. Plus the templates are using some minimal space.
Is this because my project's too long? Or did I choose incorrect settings?
I then tried the fast encode because I thought the file would be smaller. That didn't work.
One more question! What kind of discs are compatible to burn in the super drives?
I had some TDKs, but those didn't work on another project I tried to burn.

It sounds like you're using Compressor 1 (or some variant, like 1.2). Please confirm if that's correct.
If that is the case, your fix might be an easy one. Locate a program called A.Pack on your machine (it should be in the Applications folder) and use it to create a Dolby Digital file.
If you use the .ac3 file that A.Pack creates, and delete the .aiff file from your DVDSP project, that should save you more than enough space to burn your project onto a standard DVD-R.
As for what kind of discs are best with your SuperDrive, that's a bit of a crapshoot (because different products lines from even a single manufacturer aren't guaranteed). But anyway, I've had great luck with Verbatim's DataLifePlus series (I usually get them from B&H).

Project won't fit on DVD disc?

Just wondering if anyone can help me please?
I videoed my niece's wedding which was in the avchd format. I've now compiled the video for her which is 51mins 52 seconds long with quit a few effects/transitions in, but when I go to Share/Disc the bitrate is 5.89mbps when fitting to a DVD disc (4.37GB), apparently it needs 5.93GB of disc space for it to burn in the best quality (8mbps) in SD.
So my question is, is there a way that I can burn this project to a standard DVD disc as it is without losing SD quality, unfortunately BD isn't an option at this time?
I'm currently using APE 7.

Well, you are going from HD to SD, and there are two good ways to do that:
Follow Jeff Bellune's HD2SD TUTORIAL, using freeware to down-rez the material.
From PrE, Export/Share your Project to DV-AVI. Then Import that into a DV Project for the authoring.
Personally, I like John T's rec. to use DL (8.5GB) blank media, and I always ONLY use Verbatim DL's - DVD-9's.
If you still have problems with the size, and do not want to go much lower in the Bit-Rate, you might be able to "squeeze" the files a bit, with a program, like DVD Squeeze. To do that, you would choose the DVD-9/DL option, but then Burn to Folder. With DVD Squeeze, you would then process the resultant VIDEO_TS folder with the IFO, BUP and mainly the VOB files. You might be able to keep a good Bit-Rate, and get the size down to fit onto a DVD-5 (4.7GB).
Any DVD player with the "DVD" logo, is certified to play both DVD-5's, and DVD-9's, but with one big caveat - no DVD player is certified to play ANY burned DVD, though most do just fine. A few, mostly older ones, balk at any burned DVD-9's, but are certified to play all replicated DVD-9's. Most titles from Hollywood are replicated onto DVD-9 discs.

Too much info to fit on DVD?

Probably a stupid question, but when creating a project in FCE and then exporting to iDVD, how can I know when I am close to having too much "project" to fit on a DVD?
In other words, I don't want to keep creating projects on my timeline if I have already (unknowingly) filled up the space available on the DVD. Is there a guage somewhere that can be used as a guideline? Especially since I will also have a short slideshow as part of the menu in iDVD.

What matters is the length (in time) of your video. As a general rule, you can put up to 2 hours of video on a single layer DVD. To the extent that you add templates, menus, slideshows, etc. to your DVD project they will decrease the space available for video on the same DVD.
iDVD has meters that show your project duration and how much space is used & still available in your DVD project as you add menus & assets to your project. By the way, iDVD 7 has greatly enhanced reporting of space availability compared to iDVD 6 or earlier. FCE cannot tell you that information.
In any case, if you have already added your slideshow to the DVD, you could estimate how many minutes of video might fit by multiplying the remaining space in GB by 25. So, for example, if you have already used 1.2 GB in your DVD project, 4.2GB - 1.2GB = 3.0 GB remaining available. Multiply that by 25 mins/GB, and you could fit about 75 min of video in the same DVD project. (Note: 4.2GB is the estimated capacity of a single-layer DVD for purposes of these calculations, as is 25 min/GB. Also, this is only for purposes of calculating remaining capacity in your DVD project - the size of the file you export from FCE has no bearing on these calculations; only the length in time is relevant.)

How do I convert a VLC file to imovie. I have managed to download the mini dvd disc from the video camera onto a USB and have saved the file on my desktop but have no clue how to get it into iMovie so I can edit and send via email. Any ideas!!!

Not able to create a new project (i.e Manage - Project ) in 10g

I am trying to create a new project to implement Multi User Development Environment (MUDE) , but facing the below problems while doing so : -
a:> While Opening repository in Online Mode :-
I am not able to open open Manage --> Projects ( as Projects is disabled for me i. grayed out )
b:> While opening in Offline Mode :-
I am able to navigate to Manage --> Projects , but when the Project Windows opens and I am doing Actions --->New Project not able to do so ( as New Project is disable i.e grayed out ) .
Please guide.

Links to Documentation in a Solution Manager Project

Solution Manager Project Documentation has a feature that allows you to "link" to differnet levels of your documentation. For instance, if I attach a documentation template at the Process level of a Project and there are 10 process steps under that process, I can create links at each process step that will link to the document that I attached at the process level.
Is there a way to automatically build these links or must I create each link manually?

at least until solman version 7.0 ehp1 i'm not aware of any automatic way to do that. Maybe in the 7.1 could be any other option, maybe importing from any external tool.
I believe that the only things you can do in a node and replicate to the subnodes are the settings in the administration tab.

Has anybody used Oracle BPM for network management projects with millions of events?
Can Oracle BPM handle it?

Please follow this step may this solve your problem.
please modify any thing in process "ExpenseReporting" for example any transition or any activity to place some where else or any other modification and then save that process. Then clean the project and build and deploy it.
if this also not solve the problem then export that project to and import it again in your workspace (Create new workspace or change the project name in same workspace ) and then again clean, build and deploy the application then test in work space.

What Tools should i use in a Document Management Project ?

Opening projects that have a DVD menu.

I am unable to re-open projects that contain a DVD menu after I have correctly closed the project. Specifically, I have a series of MPEG videos (saved by Premiere Elements). They all open fine and run welel individually and collectively. I then put a DVD menu in with all the Chapter and Scene menu markers and then saved it and closed the project to come back to it at a later time. When I re-open I get the error "Sorry, a serious error has occured that requires Adobe Premiere elements to shut down . . ." and the whole program closes.
I have tried this twice with different videos and get the same result. I have never before tried to include a DVD menu in a Premiere 9 project. I have Windwos 7, 32 bit, plenty of memory and disc space, I have tried two different disc drives(both NTFS format) and reinstalled Premiere. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum, which is a repository for articles on how to do specific things in Premiere. Few general users stop by here, so there will be few, if any, "eyes" on your issue. Maybe our tireless MOD, Steve Grisetti, can move this out to the main forum, where many more users will see your post.
I do not recall anyone else having issues with Opening any Projects, with DVD/BD Menus and navigation. The addition of those elements should not affect the ability to Open such Projects, but in your case, they do. I cannot imagine what is happening to cause those Projects to fail to Open, but maybe others will have similar experiences, and can offer some help. If the post can be moved to the main forum, it stands a greater chance that those users will see it, and can help.

Solution Manager Project

When creating a project in Solution Manager (solar_project_admin) I am receiving an error when creating the IMG View for the remote system. The message states that I am not authorized to display the project even though I have SAP_ALL and SAP_NEW authorizations in both systems. When reading the extended help for the error (SPROJECT322) it states that I need the value 03 for the field ACTVT in the authorization object S_PROJECT, but I have confirmed that this is already set.
It begins the process of creating the IMG in the remote system but does not complete the link back to the Solution Manager project.
Are there any other reasons why this type of behavior might occur?

Thank you for your suggestion, but let me provide you with a little more information to see if this is still the correct action to take.
I currently have SAP_ALL and SAP_NEW authorizations in Solution Manager along with many different role assignments. In the satellite systems I have the IMG_CUS_ADMIN role for managing the projects when they are published to those systems.
In my most recent work I created a project in Solution Manager using 4 different logical components (BI, ECC, SCM, and SRM) for the systems that this project would interact with. With my current Solution Manager security and authorizations I was able to create the IMG view from Solution Manager to the BI, SCM, and SRM systems, but received my error message described above for the ECC system.
Based on that do you think I would still look at my security in the Solution Manager system, or a configuration in the satellite system?

Migrating Solution Manager Project ?

Hello .. has anyone had success in migrating a Solution Manager project from one server to another ? If so, can you share the details. I am aware it can be done via template, but havent tried as of yet...

My worry is not migration process.
That´s why you must have a certified migration consultant on-site to do the migration. If you do it on your own and you have problems after the migration you will loose support.
But after migration will solution manager configuration remain intact?

No - apart from a different OS and database configuration that must be taken care of during the migration.
Also Can you please suggest rough ( approx ) estimate for migration? Solution manager version 7.0 , Solaris 5.9 , oracle 10g.
It´s impossible to tell that.
It depends on lots of factors (processor number/speed, speed of I/O subsystem, database configuration...). A migration is usually done three times at least to get the optimal number of R3load processes and database configuration during the migration process.

Hi Simon,
It is true that the transport is easy if the connection for transport between the systems is created correctly.
But the consequences are delicate.
E.g. a project that is assigned to a released transport request cannot be deleted.
And there are difficulties to change the projects in both systems back to be local. Any change to the origin project needs authority to add the change to the transport if the project is not defined to be local ($TMP in transport tab).
To avoid this problem you can copy the project first by the transaction SOLAR_PROJECT_ADMIN and then transport the copy.
Another point of view is: If the origin project was defined to be local ($TMP in transport tab) some assigned objects may got lost (e.g. links, assigned users, testers). On the other hand: if you define the transport request first before creating objects to the project you enhance effort for maintaining the project. Because any change has to be added to the transport request. And the users need the authorities to do so.

Linking solution manager projects with CHARM implementation project

Hi Guys,
Currently i am working in CHARM implementation project, i have created one CHARM implementation project with urgent correction and i am able to create the Transport request and release the transport request succesfully and i am able to move it to quality system successfully. But my customer is asking to link the solution manager project to CHARM implementation project.
Earlier before implementing CHARM they have implemented project managent in solution manager, during that project they have created so many projects which are currently running, now they want those projects to be linked CHARM implementation project.
When ever they create a transport request through CHARM they want the TP to be saved under a respective project which they are using currently. but according to my knowledge the TP can be saved under CHARM implementation project only.
Now i want to know whether the projects created in SOLAR_PROJECT_ADMIN can be linked to CHARM implementation project. Pls give ur valuable inputs as it is very urgent.

We have implemented this with two systems landscape where in we have in place a Solution Manager Dev system and Solution manager Production system both are SOLMAN 4.0 with SP12. So the path for us to move the changes is from Development Systems to Production system.
We have ChaRM between the Dev and production. We reapplied the satellite system concept. For us the Solution manager Prod is a satellite systems all the changes that we move from Development system to Production systems is tracked with necessary documentation in the ChaRM process.
Yes, I agree with you that this is not any big magic. Working with two SOLMAN implementation, I strongly feel that SAP needs to have well rounded ChaRm processes. We have robust Change Management Process, but when we moved to ChaRM we were limited functionality of the ChaRM processes.
I had approached and did some research on how other companies are implementing the same process. Most of them have almost the same process for tracking SOLMAN changes. I am still look out for improved process to manage SOLMA changes.

Manage Project In: Why no ID tag in response?

I'm consuming Enterprise Services (from the Manage Project In Interface) on the ES Workspace. When I create networks or network activities with the "Create Project Network" or "Create Project Activity" services, I would expect to get the ID of the created objects in the ID tag, as announced in the WSDLs. Instead there is no ID tag in the response, although there was no error and the object was created (since it can be read afterwards). Here is an excerpt of a sample response from the      ProjectERPNetworkCreateRequestConfirmation_In service (unfortunately posting the whole XML leads to an error):

The question is: Why is there no ID tag and what is that "Individual check" the Log is talking about? Of course the given link (...sap.corp) is not available from outside the SAP network
Can somebody please clarify?

In the meantime I found out that:
1.) There never is an ID in the response. My solution ist to parse the Log tag and extract the created ID from there.
2.) The URL in the response is invalid, regardless which system you're on. I don't care any longer!
