Many Chapters - How Best to Setup Project in Encore?

Im starting work on a DVD of footage ripped from a clients family VHS tapes. Ill be doing the editing in PP2 and then authoring in EncoreDVD 2. I do not have the structure of the DVD planned out yet, but will probably have a few dozen Chapters, of their two daughters growing up. My question is what's the best way to set up and plan for the Project in Encore. Yes, Ill be drawing out a schematic, as I will want the viewer to be able to go to each daughter, or to, say Christmas 86, or to whatever.
Heretofore, Ive usually had one Timeline for a single Project with essentially a Play All button, etc. Or, if I have had Chapters, Ive Exported to individual AVIs, and set each one up on its own Timeline. With these, Ive usually linked Play All to a Playlist for the entire Project, then done a Scene Selection Sub-menu(s). No problem at all. Now, Im interested in getting input on the +/-s of doing it with one Timeline and trying to structure the Chapter Points. Any compelling reason to do it that way, or is the multiple-Timeline method the better/easier to work with, even though I may well have 4-5 Sub-menus for Scene Selection? As several Chapters could be accessed from different Sub-menus, I will probably do Chapter Playlists, if I go the separate Timeline route. If its the old 6-of-one, half-dozen... , then Ill probably stick to what I have always done and just do separate Assets with respective Timelines. I just want to find out how the experienced users would tackle it, before I choose the wrong method and have to re-do the Project, especially the Export from PP2.
Thanks for your thoughts on my biggest project to date,
Hunt

I also want to add that I've seen Neil Wilke's comments on Dolby Encode sound sync drift, and several other comments addressing individual problems. All of these have been printed out to help me decide, so I will not waste time requesting details, just overall comments.
Thanks,
Hunt

  • How best to setup a Mac Pro with two hard drives for 1st hard drive or OS failure?

My first Apple, a Mac Pro,  is to arrive on Monday (1/7).  I will be putting Win7 on Bootcamp and installing Parrallels.  It will have two 1T hard drives.   I would appreciate
any advice on how best to set it up for best recovery in case of a hard drive or OS crash.   You can tell I have experience with Windows.    It looks like my best choices are
either disk cloning software or just installing OS X from the recovery disk  on the second drive.   Apple says it is legal to do another installation.   I know the disk cloning will not work on the bootcamp partition which I plan to use for the Parallels program.  Can OS X have an option to boot from two differnet disks and OS installs?
What I am really wanting to do in the event of a crash,  is to just boot up on the other disk and keep working.     I try to keep data on a separate partition  with backups so
that a disk or OS crash doesn't cause any data loss.

    I do not use windows.
However on my Mac Pro for cloning/backups/bootable backups i use Carbon Copy Cloner.
It has an ability to clone entire disk (unless specified differently) so I can boot from another disk or restore back if I want to.

There is no feature for that in Premiere Pro.  I suggest that you keep a project log either in a spreadsheet, database, Notepad or Wordpad file, or a hand written one.

  • How many years do you typically setup in an HFM Application

This is more of a survey...
How many years do you typically setup in your HFM applications? Of this total, how many of these years are populated with historical data?

Originally we did 15/5. We are reimplementing with 15/1 and may add 2 more years of history data soon after launch.

  • Got a problem? Here's how best to ask for help.

Working with video editing on an NLE (Non Linear Editor) program can tax the most robust computers. Depending on many factors, this can be a daunting task, at best. Many of the components of one’s computer can be stressed, more than with almost any other operation, that it will ever perform.
Getting help on the forum can seem almost as daunting, as the first thing that a poster is likely to encounter is a list of questions, before any answers. This is the natural flow, because people are trying to help remotely. They cannot come to your office and sit behind you to determine your computer system’s capabilities, and observe just what you are doing, when and how you are doing it. Do not be put off by these questions, as they are very necessary and will very likely give the respondents some clues on where to look for your problem.
Problems can normally be broken down into these categories:
    1.) System
2.) Assets (the Audio, Video and still images)
3.) Project (how it is setup and with which Preset)
4.) Workflow (what you are doing, and how you are doing it)
If you prepare a checklist, before you post your problem, it will save everyone a great deal of time, and will likely yield your answer much more quickly. The more detail that you furnish, the fewer questions will remain, that have to be asked. Remember, you have to be the "eyes" for the others on the forum, if they are expected to help you. They could be thousands of mile away, in other time zones, and will not know about your system, your Assets, your Project or your workflow, until you tell them. Help them get started quickly, by telling them in your first post. Do your "homework," so they do not have to ask questions for the first five responses, and can start giving you answers much more quickly.
Forum regular Bill Hunt offers these recommendations:
    System:
Be very specific about your computer. Just saying that "I have a Dell" doesn’t tell them much of anything. List your CPU type and speed, i.e. Core2 Quad Q6700 2.3GHz. Same for your RAM, i.e. 4GB of DDS. Also, list your Video Card, type, connection and driver number and date. Same for your Audio System. Note: most of this data can be found in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager. Pointing people to a URL on your computer company’s Web site isn’t a bad idea, but giving the exact details of your system is far, far better. It is likely that that Web site will have the general configuration, and who knows if that is exactly what you bought. List it for them, so they do not have to go and guess, and write down the specs. of your system.
One of the most important aspects of your system will be the I/O sub-system. What is that, you might ask? Well, it’s your HDD’s (Hard Disk Drives). The important info is how many physical HDD’s do you have. List their size, their speed, their connection, the amount of free, defragmented space and how they are allocated. This would look something like this: "3x 200GB SATA II. Drive C:\ OS, programs and Windows Virtual Memory with 185GB free, D:\ media with 120GB free, E:\ Project files, output and Scratch Disks with 150GB free." If you have any drive partitioned (not a good thing nowadays), let everyone know and give details. If you have a RAID, give full details on how it is managed, the type and how it is used in your system. [As an aside, most RAID’s should not really be considered for a system drive, unless one has built in redundancy in the RAID, i.e. 3, or more, physical disks. Remember, this info can be critical. If you have CD/DVD burners, list them and their connections. If you have external HDD’s, list them with the same details as for your internal HDD’s.
Next, tell about your Windows Virtual Memory (Page File). How large is it, where is it located on your system and how is it managed, i.e. dynamically by Windows, or static? Again, this can be critical. For info, you will need to go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>Performance and look. In the Settings>Advanced, you should see things like Process Scheduling, Memory Usage and Virtual Memory. This is where you will find the answers. Note: depending on which OS one has, the exact location and syntax may differ.
While we’re on the OS, list the exact OS that you have, i.e. Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP-2 with all updates and hot-fixes.
What version of the NLE are you using and has it been updated, i.e. PE3.0.2.
Finally, list any other programs, that might be in use, while you are editing, such as MSN Messaging, etc. These can be critical, even though you are basically editing video.
    Assets:
Give full details on your Assets. Just saying "a bunch of .AVI’s" tells people nothing. Be very specific with the details. Same for your Audio and for your still images. Size in pixels, file type, etc., are very important for the stills, and file type. Sample-rate and sample size are important for the Audio.
    Project:
How is your Project setup? Which Preset did you use? What is the Duration of your Timeline. This gives someone the "lay of the land," so to speak and is very important. Note: your Project Preset should match your Video Assets. You can always Export/Share to some other frame size, or format, but your Project should match your Video Assets.
    Workflow:
How have you arranged your Assets on the Timeline allows someone to "see" your Project in their mind. Information such as one 00;10;00;00 AVI (remember, you will have furnished complete details on those AVI’s, or MPEG’s when you listed your Assets above) on Video Track 1 (VT1) with its Audio on Audio Track 1 (AT1). One AVI used as a PiP (Picture in Picture) on VT2 with its Audio on AT2. One MP3 soundtrack for the full Duration on Soundtrack and my Narration on the Narration Track. List any Transitions, or Effects used. If you have Titles, list them. If you have any Keyframing used, list where and what they control.
List exactly what you are doing and to which Asset you are doing it, when your problem occurs. If you are doing something like Export/Share, list the full settings (Presets) used, and be sure to mention any other tasks being performed by your computer, while you are doing the Export/Share.
If you have already done some trouble shooting, list what you have done and the complete results. Were there any error messages? If so, give the full description. To say, "I had error messages," tells people nothing. What exactly did they say?
This information will help people get right to your problem and will get you up and running much more quickly.
As an aside, think about the title of your post. Saying "Problem" is not good enough. Instead, something like "PE7 Fails on Share to MPEG-2" would be better. First, you are trying to let everyone know something about your Problem, so they will see it, and be interested in helping you. If you are having an Audio issue, mention "Audio" in the title, so the right people will find your post. Not everyone knows everything about all aspects of Video. You want the right people to see your post and to be working with you, to fix your problem. Also, later on, it is good to have a title that will be easily found by others, who may have the same exact problem. If you get an answer that works, please post back that success, so others, finding your post, will know what worked, and what did not. Note: do not put your entire post into the title. That is just tough to read and understand. Use a few words, but make them the right words.

  • Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long

Exporting From FCE to IDVD With Chapters How long will the DVD hold??? if i have an hour and 40 minutes of HD footage all cut together with FCE and has been saved as a movie file, how many hours will IDVD let me burn to it?
if i run over the allowed amount will it say i need to drop quality, i am editing loads at the moment and dont want to get to the end and it come up with an error message. also will idvd include the chapter markers if i export with them?

    Sure, no problem.
    1. Go to Project > Project Info in iDVD.
    2. Make sure "DVD Type" is set to a single-layer DVD.
    3. Under "Encoding," choose "Best Performance." Is the arrow solidly in the green portion of the quality bar? If so, go ahead and burn your disc.
    4. If not, choose "High Quality." Again, go ahead and burn your disc if the arrow is solidly in the green.
    3. If the arrow still isn't in the green, select Professional Quality. If the arrow's in the green, burn your disc. If not, you'll have to delete some of the menus (scene selection, etc.) or menu content and check again. You should be able to burn up to 2 hours if you don't have a lot of other menu content.

  • Setup Project installs but does not become active

    Hello all,
My task for my work was to transfer over a macro that I made that would process and delete incoming emails to a specified mailbox in Outlook into a Visual Studio project. This is required because we want to be able to give out the code to clients, which
is quite cumbersome with a macro. I want to be able to use Visual Studio's Setup and Deployment to create an installer for the Add In.
I have spent hours trying to figure out how to get the installer to work. From everything that I have read and all of the youtube videos that I've watched, I just cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm missing.
My problem is that when I build the setup project and move it over to a machine I want to install it on, it installs just fine. I even check the windows event logs and it displays no errors, stating the installation was successful. The files are even placed
where I wanted them to be. But when I open Outlook expecting the add in to run, it's not there. Not under active, disabled, or otherwise. When I debug the project, it runs just fine and Outlook has the add in as active. Thus, I even tried moving over the literal
vsto file with the installer (because that was the file location shown in Outlook during debug), and still the installer runs successfully but it doesn't affect Outlook. When I double click the vsto file though, poof, Outlook has the add in. But that doesn't
appear to be the setup doing anything, I'm just installing the add in from the VSTO directly, I believe.
Apparently I cannot add images to the body text, which might have made this easier.
I'm creating my project (Outlook add in) and copying my macro code over. When I debug the project, it's shown as an active add in and works fine. I then add the setup and deployment project (Visual Studio Installer -> Setup Project). From the videos that
I've watched, I haven't noticed anyone do anything more than add the Primary Output and then alter the Deployment Project Properties (company name and etc.).
As I said previously, running the debug does just fine at causing the add in to be active and seen by Outlook, but no such similar thing appears when I run the setup installer on the other machine. Nor when I run the installer on the same machine as I was
    running the debug.
I'm at a complete loss as to what I need to do to fix this and would appreciate any help you can give me.

    Hi Brady Schwandt,
    >>I want to be able to use Visual Studio's Setup and Deployment to create an installer for the Add In.
Which VS version did you use? So you use the InstallShield LE, am I right?
I found some blogs which shared some information about it here:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/emeamsgdev/archive/2013/11/21/outlook-deploying-an-outlook-2013-add-in-using-installshield-le.aspx
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mcsuksoldev/archive/2010/10/01/building-and-deploying-an-outlook-2010-add-in-part-1-of-2.aspx
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/mcsuksoldev/archive/2010/10/01/building-and-deploying-an-outlook-2010-add-in-part-2-of-2.aspx
As you said that the project has no any issue, so the real issue is related to "how to create the setup project with InstallShield LE for outlook add-in".
You know that actually we didn't support the InstallShield LE, it has his own third party supported site now, if above blogs no help, I suggest you post this issue to this site:
    http://community.flexerasoftware.com/forumdisplay.php?133-InstallShield

  • How do you setup GNU/Linux on an iMac G4 with Panther OS X 10.3.9 ?...

How do you setup GNU/Linux on an iMac apple computer
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_G4
    with Panther OS X 10.3.9
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSX10.3 ?...

There is a Ubuntu 10.4 version for Mac with PPC architecture; not sure
how that would work in the computer you may consider running it in.
Some leads on that kind of discussion can be found by using a Google
search, and the words: *ubuntu for PPC G4 Mac* + read through results.
Or choose to search using these terms: *Open Source Linux PPC G4 Mac*
A few results point back to Apple Discussions, where there were inquiries.
Note the version of a Linux-type of OS, compatible with Mac PPC hardware,
on the following page-link: *• Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx)*
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/10.04/release/
{You would have to put the image, as downloaded from such a site, on a CD
    for use as an Installer; then follow any instructions as available to install it.}
An old page (from 2007?) with some details, some not up-to-date,
may be of help to a limited degree, from here: Ubuntu PPC wiki
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#Is%20Ubuntu%20supported%20on%20PowerPC?
    Or: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ
See their home page to look for other information on the site: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/
These wiki groups are like communities, with rules & other such considerations; you
may be able to also find +Open Source+ sites with information and builds of suitable
Linux versions capable of running well in an older PPC Mac. There are newer ones
that would have no problem on a newer Intel-based Mac, of course.
    • Mac Linux Links: (perhaps too dated)
    http://lowendmac.com/linux/index.shtml
    • Comparison of Linux distributions:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparisonof_Linuxdistributions
Hardware support in the older PPC G4 Mac computer should be considered, in order
to have the better experience possible with the Linux-based OS; and some specs in
an old Mac may not be ideal. The graphics processor unit and amount of dedicated
RAM for the graphics alone, could make a difference; depending on what you had in
mind when running a Linux-based OS in a PPC Mac. So consider hardware specs.
Some hardware in the computer may or may not be supported by the Software; and
then, there may be some problems implementing a Linux OS version in your Mac.
If you had an old Mac Mini (PPC or early Intel) & considered running Linux, there's
a page of general ideas worth a peek: http://sowerbutts.com/linux-mac-mini/
You may not have enough room on the existing internal hard disk drive inside the
iMac G4, for a complete OS X 10.3.9 or Later OS X, and a partition for Linux in it.
And, you may find through reading further, if you need to (or don't) start fresh and
have a partition for each different OS, or not. For organizational purposes and ease
of removing one system or the other, a partitioned hard disk drive may be best.
There probably is a way to have Linux on an external bootable hard disk drive; &
that would have to be compatible with the Mac hardware requirements to be seen
and used by the computer, and also the ability to restart from Linux into Mac OS X
would have to exist in the system software. Hopefully without incident.
You will have some degree of a learning curve in this matter, from reading up on
the details of any viable Linux versions, through the ones likely to work in your
old PPC G4 Mac, and then if there are more than two or three good ones, of those
what one would be most likely to be worth the additional effort to attempt to use in it.
Depending on the version and specifications of your iMac G4 computer, there could
be different versions of linux systems capable of running it. However, some items
may not be supported which you would need to have working, such as wi-fi internet
and sleep mode, etc; among others. Searching the net does bring up more info.
{You may find, that going to OS X 10.4.11 would be more worth the effort, in that
most everything would 'just work' and you can still find many good software bits
and some fine freeware or low cost shareware to run on it. Linux versions vary
    so much on what they can and cannot do, I would not recommend running it.}
Since I am not an expert in the matter, hopefully someone with a experimental time
and results in a similar vintage Mac as yours will reply and give you insightful info.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I setup Flash Builder To Connect To A Remote Server ?

    Hi All  ...
Ok i'm  coming back to Flex after a time away and have  Flex installed in  Eclipse on a Linux Box.  I have just setup a Lamp  Server running in a  VirtualBox that i am using as my development server
My question  is how do i setup my  project so the Server Location is pointing to my  remote development server instead of having to have apache installed  locally ?
    Many   Thanks

    David
What type of manual work? Should I be developing with local running mysql/php and then when I want to test WAN functionality just change the connection variables in my flex/air application to the wan php gateway?
Can I do flex/air applications using LAMP/WAMP without AMFPHP installed on the server side? I assume AMFPHP would be doing the same function as the Zend framework?

  • I need to know how best to import .mod files into elements 7

I need to know how best to import .mod files into elements 7

    lornamarieslade
Are you working with .mod standard or widescreen?
If .mod standard, less problematic. The file just might import without issue. Worst case would probably be changing the file extension from .mod to .mpg just prior to import.
Now .mod widescreen is another story that revolves around maintaining the 16:9 flag that scretches the video for display after encoding. Some have said that the 16:9 flag is lost in the transfer to computer; some say certain editors such as Premiere Elements just cannot read/recognize the flag. Whatever the case this is what you should consider in your Premiere Elements 7 Windows.
    a. If you need to rename the file extension from .mod to .mpg, do so prior to import.
    b. Import the .mod or .mpg counterpart into your Premiere Elements 7 project using the project preset NTSC or PAL DV Widescreen (NTSC or PAL depends on your location of interest). You will probably see that the video does not fill the space in the Edit Mode Monitor (you will probably see standard 4:3 looking image rather than widescreen 16:9 looking image).
    c. Right click the file in the Project media area, select Interpret Footage, and, in the Interpret Footage Dialog/Pixel Aspect Ratio section, dot the Conform To: and change the setting to
    D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2)
    or
    D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1.422)
depending on your location of interest.
A while back there used to be a program called SD Copy that did the job of file name change and adding the 16:9 flag prior to import of the .mod widescreen into Premiere Elements. But, I have lost track of the SD Copy and suspect that is it no longer available. I have dealt with this issue many times at a forum that I formerly frequent. Most have reported back that this workaround worked for them. It is worth a try. I am looking forward to your results.
If you do opt to upgrade to Premiere Elements 11 Windows (please go tryout before purchase), I am eager to learn how your .mod widescreen is handled by version 11 in your computer environment.
    Thanks.
    ATR
Add On...I just came across this download for SDCopy. It does not give the appearance of the original the link to which is broken. I have not downloaded and used the following since I do not have any .mod widescreen. So, no guarantees. Please let us know the outcome if you try it if Interpret Footage does not work for you.

  • Too Many Chapters

My FCE video has a bunch of chapters. iDVD usually allows only 12 chapters per menu page. I have tried to use more than 24 chapters but iDVD does not want to generate a third menu page. How can I get a third page? Thanks

Usually, iDVD generates a set number of scenes(chapters) in submenus; the exact number varies with the iDVD themes, and can be from 6-10 per submenu. 12 is pushing it a bit. If you have over 24 chapters, where did iDVD put them initially? My experience has been that iDVD generates enough submenus to accomodate all the chapters you have set in your movie. Most of my movies have chapters; most have many chapters, from 20-80. I have never found that iDVD would not create submenus if needed.
I just made a DVD with 38 chapters, and the iDVD theme I chose put six to a submenu automatically. Because the last submenu had only two, I copied two from the previous submenu and pasted them onto the last one so that each had 4 instead of one with 6 and one with 2.
If iDVD does not do that, something is not right because the chapters should be somewhere within the iDVD project.
However, you can add a submenu from your second submenu, by selecting the + button at the bottom left of the main iDVD window and choosing to 'add submenu' You will see a button that lets you navigate to another submenu, and you can copy/paste the chapters into it.

  • One Computer, Two Accounts - How Best to Proceed with MacOS 10.8.2?

My wife and I want to share our new iMac, and I'd like some advice on how best to do this without messing things up.
We both have iOS devices to sync, and we both are using the same iTunes Store Account. However, we each have our own iCloud account. We each have our own email accounts, Hotmail accounts, and Yahoo accounts. We each have our own account for the iMac, which I assume you would need if you wanted to maintain two different sets of Mail accounts and two different Facetime "accounts," what to speak of different desktop customization options.
Things we would like to share without duplicating files include: iPhoto library (~100 GB), iTunes media files (over 300 GB), Contacts list, (maybe) Calendar, and (maybe) Safari bookmarks. We do NOT want to share e-mail, Reminders, Facetime. Ideally, I would like for her to be able to sync her devices entirely through her iMac account. However, I am not opposed to her syncing her iOS devices through my account for some things and through her account for other things, if that is not easily avoidable.
Regarding the iTunes library, I could go either way on her having separate library files with separate ratings & playlists or just sharing the same library setup that I have. However, I would want her to have access to the same metadata that I have for all music and video files, since I have lots of custom album art as well as lyrics loaded in. Do we have to use the same library file in order to have access to the same metadata, which will be updated on a regular basis?  If so, then is there a way to do that via two different computer accounts, or does she pretty much have to sync with my account?
Now regarding iPhoto libraries, I wouldn't mind us sharing the same "library" as well as the files, including ratings and albums. I would like for the "faces" setup to be the same for both of us, if possible, so that she does not have to repeat the process of face tagging. I read in an older article that sharing the iPhoto library could be accomplished by sending the iPhoto library file to an external hard drive, but as that seemed to be an older approach, I thought I would ask here if that is still the ideal approach. I might want to send the iPhoto library file to an external HD anyway for space considerations. But if I do this, and we are both using the same library file for viewing photos, then does she still see the same albums, events, and tags that I have created already?
Is there a way to share contacts and calendars without having to share other things like Notes and Reminders? I suppose I could have her sync this information via my account, but I'd be greatful to learn of a better way if there is one.

You can share out both the iTunes library and the iPhoto Library in their respective preferences. However, the sharing account must have both iTunes and iPhoto running. You can keep the account running with those things open in the background using Fast User Switching. Enable that in the Users & Groups system prefs and then never log out, just switch to the login screen or the other account using the Fast User switching menu.
I haven't done much actual use in either, so I don't know what the limits are (like making a playlist out of the shared tracks, syncing with iPhone/iPod, etc). For iPhoto, all the photos are available, but if you want to edit one, you have to import a copy into your own library. Another option might be to not keep the media inside the Library, but store it in the /Users/Shared folder. Then, set up your Libraries to leave the content where it is (Preferences). However, I don't think you'd get the metadata for the iTunes music. I believe that is all stored within the iTunes Library.
You can share iCloud calendars so the other person can see your calendar by right-clicking on the Calendar name. There will be an option to share the calendar, there. Also, you can do so from the iCloud web interface.
I've got nothing on sharing contacts. Not sure of a good way to do that besides maintaining two sets. You can start from the same source, but it will diverge over time as contacts are added and removed individually.

  • How best to migrate from MacPro to iMac w/ SSD and extrenal drives

Currently I have a MacPro with 4 drives - 3 1TB and 1 2Tb, the 2TB drive is my main hard drive, so it has system, apps, documents, itunes etc....and it has been upgraded and migrated from one computer to the next as long as apple has had the ability to do so (and before that by moving over targeted drive manually). I currently am running 10.6.8 on the machine. I have ordered a new iMac w/ an internal 512gb SSD drive, and after speaking with an Apple rep, I got a THunderbolt enclosure to house my current 4 hard drives. Now my question is how best to get my preferences etc into the new computer w/o dragging along all the old stuff...(ie old apps not compatible w/ Mountain Lion, old system folders, etc). Here is what I would like to do:
    1. setup SSD with OS, fresh installs of Apps, and my fonts (i am a designer and i have a gazillion fonts and they always take way to long to load into my font app).
    2. I would like my 2TB drive to eventually just include my home directory where all my files, and such will be stored. But I would like to keep the drive as is to make sure everything is working just in case, I dont want to have any down time during the upgrade process (ie if a client calls me and needs something while I am still setting up I could boot off the 2tb drive and work). But after all is working properly then I would like to make it just the home directory and main place for all files etc
    3. My remaining 3 drives are broken up for manual backups of my work on 2 of the drives, and then photos and mp3s on one, and movies and tv shows from itunes on the other. I dont currently run Time Machine or Retrospect or RAID....
I see most people saying to create 2 admin accounts, one that would stay on the SSD drive and the other which could be mapped to the 2TB drive and have its home directory there...but what do I do about moving preferences etc? is there a way when setting up that will let me import my current account and let me keep it on the external drive as is? should i move the files that i want to keep off the 2tb drive, wipe it to get rid of the old apps and system and then put back the home directory??I don't want to run into trouble with permissions, and I really dont even want to create 2 accounts because I hate having to close everything and log out for simple installs and updates...i have 2 on my macbook pro now and i run into errors all the time of i cant update this or that because of admin account...even though both accounts are set as admin.
I want to keep the whole upgrade simple, but I would like to keep this fresh system clean as  am sure there is way to much left over garbage from upgrades past. So just not sure how best to do any of it.....

I purchased the DataTale RS-M4t SMART 4-Bay Thunderbolt RAID storage enclosure. But it can do both RAID if you get their data manager software download, or it can just mount the drives and be used normally. So basically I can plug all 4 of my current drives into it...and it into my iMac and it will be same as if I had it in my tower....so really not moving over a ton of stuff. I will load all apps fresh onto the brand new iMac - so the SSD will be a clean install...my worries are trying to get access to home directories etc on the current main drive and have things get setup correctly, keychains, bookmarks, etc...as well as my iTunes which has iPad and iPhone backups, etc. I am just not sure as how to best setup the SSD to get the most of its speed while being able to get my current account working but on the second external drive.
