Many-to-many capability w/interactive server?

Good morning!
I am completely new to Flash server.
We seek to create a remote learning environment (distance learning) with complete interactivity.  In particular, a talk can be delivered simultaneouslty to 20 students.  The students can each see all the other students plus the speaker (as in a boarder of faces around the edge of the screen).  Each is free to converse with the class and teacher (unless capability is turned off by teacher).
Based upon what I have read Flash Interactive server will perform in a one-to-many mode.  Now, how about the many-to-many as described above?  What sort of requirements would be need to be met both at the server and on the individual laptops/desktops/netbooks?

What you've described is certainly possible, but may not neccesarily be practical. Having 20 always on video streams will introduce significant bandwidth requirments, and may prove to be a bit more load than the processor in the average netbook is equipped to handle.
Let's consider the 20 participant scenario you described, and let's assume each audio/video stream is published at 100kbps combined. That would mean that each particpant would be consuming about 1.9Mbps of downstream bandwidth, which may not be realistic for all of the participants. On the server side, you'd have 400 streams, and you'd be burning roughly 39Mbps. If you're only running one of these classrooms it may be workable, but if you're talking about multiple concurrent classrooms, the bandwidth requirements will add up fairly quickly, you'd need to expand to multiple servers after you reach the need for more than 3 or 4 of these classrooms, and you'd be burning data transfer at a rate of roughly .28GB per minute per classroom.
There's also the human element to consider. If everyone observes etiquette and people aren't trying to speak over one another, having so many partcipants at once may work. That said, if even a few of the users are talking at once, the experience will degrade pretty quickly.
It may prove more practical to allow the instructor or moderator to allow publishing on an as-needed or as-requested basis, having the concept of "hand raising" via user interface controls and only having a few participants actively broadcasting at any given time (let the moderator select the users who are being broadcast to the group). That way, you can more readily control bandwidth requirements, and the instructor/moderator has an easy means of keeping the experience good for all of the participants

    The detail here is this:
    You are asking about the 'virtual instance granting' license.
    - this only applies if Windows Server is installed on the bare metal with the Hyper-V Role added. (regardless of the edition)
    - this only applies to licensing, it does not limit the number of VMs that you can run.
    - If there is a cluster, all nodes should be the same edition to remove any licensing ambiguity.
    This is strictly OS licensing for the VMs and has absolutely nothing to do with how many VMs you can run:

    If you have a cluster - there can be a maximum of 8,000 running VMs
    If you have individual Hyper-V Servers there can be a maximum of 1,024 running VMs
    Do the math - you would need a minimum of ~8 cluster nodes to touch that 8,000 number.  But as you add nodes, you don't add HA VM capacity.  But you can run a combination of HA and non-HA VMs up to a the maximum of 1,024 running VMs per node. 
    In other words, mix and match if you want to push the boundary.

    The problem here is that at the receiving end, one cannot know how many
    bytes to read before unflattenning into the datatype.
    A method that works for *any* datatype (and any data transfer mechanism):
    Flatten the data to string.
    Flatten again the string to string; this adds a string lenght (U32) header
    to the string.
    Send the string.
    When receiving data, first read 4 bytes and convert to U32.
    Read this number of bytes.
    Typecast the string to the expected datatype.

  • Upgrade from FMS 3.5 to Flash Media Interactive Server no apps working

    I sucessfully upgraded from FMS to FMIS. In the Admin it shows that the license is now Flash Media Interactive Server r405 I believe.
    The live and vod services continue to work as expected.
    On a separate development server I have developed a number of applications that I want to move to the new production server. Nothing connects at all on the new server. In the Admin, all the applications show as being available.
    Is there something I need to do to make it work?
    I don't want to post details on line but willing to share if someone can help out?
    Boss really wants to make the $4000 upgrade work if you know what I mean...

    1. How did you upgrade - using license file or license keys - i suppose license key?
    License key. Just copied and pasted into the server admin's license screen.
    2. Did you restart your server after putting in the serial key? If not , please restart, for licensing changes to take place, you need to restart the server.
    Yes. I did, but I did it from the admin, not the start and stop applets.
    3. If you have restarted and you are facing same issue - can you check your logs and see what error messages are you getting, you can check edge.00.log,core.00.log and master.00.log.
    This is from the Edge.log. I am not really sure what it says, but it
    coincides with when I entered the key.

    Of course it has a little SWF that goes with it, but there isn't

    Hi, Im curious if we can publish on multiple sites, I have 5 websites all password protected for members, and I want all 5 members areas to be able to view my live video as I publish it. So can I embed the flash player on all 5 sites and have it pick up the same live feed.
    Also was wondering if interactive server supports or has a chat box, so students can type questions as I am explaining things live.
    And One last question Can I stream my video from different computers or can I only use one ( the one I register it on ) I want other teachers to be able to use thier webcams from there homes and publish live videos as I do on my sites. ( At different times of course )

    The first important thing to understand is that FMS has nothing to do with your website. Any .swf on any html page can connect to any FMS application. The two are completely separate
    As to your specific questions:

    Yes, but keep in mind that password protecting the HTML content does not protect the FMS application. If you need to protect the video stream itself, you'll need to employ some sort of user authentication on the FMS side.

    That type of functionality is supported, but it isn't automatically available. You'll need to develop an application to support text chat. There is a prefabricated chat component available at http://www.adobe.com/support/flashmediaserver/downloads_updaters.html (look for the flash communication server authoring components), but it's really oudated... the communications components haven't been updated since 2003.

    You can publish from any computer to an FMS application.

  • How to force authenication to stream live content FMS Interactive Server on Linux

    We purchased Flash Media Streaming Server Interactive edition in order to have the security featuers of not allowing unauthorized connections streaming live content to the server.
    Is there a document with procedures that details how to make this happen, the allowedHTMLdomains.txt does not work when you place in IP ranges that you do not want connecting.
    I need some help just to figure out a way to keep someoen from connecting to the server and not streaming live content.
    Has anyone configured this in Linux because the documentation is mainly for Windows.
    Any help/advice would be great since this seems to be a common problem for anyone who runs Linux.

    The FMS server does not the livepkgr application as its default. There is no default application as such.
    FMS server installer comes with few applications to make it easier to get started, the four applications live, vod , multicast and livepkgr , each one of these applications trying to give an easy way of implementing the different scenarios.
    live and vod are the basic RTMP live and vod cases, while multicast gives a sample implementation for RTMFP and P2P cases, livepkgr is the sample for HDS / HLS cases using HTTP Dynamic Streaming and HTTP Live Streaming for iOS devices. None of these are default, and all of them can be made use of , depending on your scenario.
    Each of these applications have the necessary files within its folder, a main.asc file that has the server side script which can include some business logic or authentication stuff (its not mandatory to have any of these files, that means, a blank folder would still /can still act as an application ! ). So, main.asc is specific to an application and it can contain the script to guide the behavior. None of these asc files are loaded by default, they are dependent on the application,
    The application can be loaded on server start up or upon the first connection to it. So unless there is a specific activity to load it up, none of the applications (and their corresponding script files) are loaded on the server engine.
    The applications, their script and other files are not specific to the interactive server, they are present and the functionality is same on all flavors of FMS and on both windows and linux.
    main.far file is just the signed archive of main.asc to avoid any changes to be made to it (the licensing process on the streaming server to restrict unsigned applications to be loaded is the reason to make this change), and hence if you make changes to the main.far , the application will not work. But this does not mean that you cannot make any changes. You can simply delete the far file and copy the main.asc (and edit it ,if needed) from the samples folder to make the applications work. You can also make copies of the applications.
    The documentation does not cover linux because there is no difference at all from windows, and what's true for windows should be the same for linux as well , in terms of its functionality.
    By default, FMS comes with only one virtual host : _default_VHost. I am not sure where you seeing the three virtual hosts.
    What query string you want to make work on Linux ? Can you please clairfy.

  • Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3.5

    Hey, I am thinking about making a web site that streams HD movies and videos that I have created myself. I was wonder could you use Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3.5 to do so I know i would have to buy a dedicated server and a fast one with a good load of bandwidth. The big question am asking is that can you base a website or content management system around the interactive server.

    FMS isn't reall suiatable for serving a website or CMS. I suppose you -could- use the included Apache installation to handle your HTTP traffic, but it would require installing a database, an application server, and whatever else you would need. You'd then need to maintain the installation yourself... FMS doesn't have any sort of package manager to handle updating Apache or anything else you might want to attach to it.
    I think you'd be better off using a package manager like Plesk or Cpanel, and let it take care of your httpd server and supporting services. My advice is to just use FMS for purposes that specifically call for it.

    Here is our problem:
    Playback of flv using Flash Player 10.1 and Flash Media Interactive Server jerky.
    Playback ok if using Flash Player 10.0 with Flash Media Interactive Server.
    1. Record live using Flash Media Interactive Server
    2. Attempt to play back resulting flv using Flash Player 10.1 and Flash Media Interactive Server.
      Video plays ok for a few seconds and then plays faster than as recorded -- very jerky.
    Audio plays at normal rate.
    OS: Windows 7 64bit (two different machines. All updates installed.)
    Web browser: FireFox 3.6.10 and IE8 8.0.7600.16385
    Flash version: 10.1.85.3
    Tried with hardware acceleration on and off.
    Note: Also had another person report the same thing on a Mac.
    We had been using Flex 3, so we tried building with Flash Builder 4 – had the same problem.
    This is a show stopper for us.
    Tried using Wowza and everything worked.
    We’re dropping FMIS and switching to Wowza.
    If someone can suggest something else to try, we would appreciate it.

    So if I understand correctly, your findings are:
    Flash Player 10.1.85.3 + Flash Media Interactive Server = Jerky Video
    Flash Player 10.0.x.x + Flash Media Interactive Server = Smooth Video
    Flash Player 10.1.85.3 + Wowza = Smooth Video
    And what about Flash Player 10.0.x.x + Wowza?
    Also, if you could check the network traffic to confirm if it's Flash Player causing the issue or it is receiving it like that from FMIS.

  • Flash media interactive server with redhat enterprise linux ?

    Was wondering if anyone was having issues trying to install
    the flash media interactive server on a RedHat Enterprise Linux
    machine. It seems that the installer that is packaged with the
    program in incompatiable. If so what are you doing to get the

    i check the dependencies and noticed that there was one that
    was not satisfyied " libasneu.so.1 as it was link to nothing. After
    moving the file to the /usr/lib and running the ldd command on the
    fmsmaster file i was then able to see the link between the two.
    When I try to install the program again I recieve the same error
    message
    "no package installFMS available"- this happens when i try
    using yum to install the program or
    ERROR: your distribution, unknown, is not supported by this
    Adobe Flash Media Server installer. - happens when ./installFMS is
    ran.
    anyone else know of any other tricks to get this installed ?

  • Streaming Server, Interactive Server, Development Server - can I get some clarification please?

    I've read the Flash Media Server 3.5 developer's guide and
    have perused various parts of the 3.5 Server-Side language
    reference, and now I am confused as to what functionality is
    available to which server products.
    For example, the XMLSocket class says its available to the
    "Flash Media Server 2". The name of the streaming server product is
    "Flash Media Streaming Server" and the other server product is the
    "Flash Media Interactive Server". So does that mean XMLSocket is
    applicable to both?
    Elsewhere in the language reference, the Netstream.time is
    said to be available to the "Flash Media Interactive Server" and
    the "Flash Media Development Server". OK, the first one is pretty
    clear, but I don't see anywhere on the Adobe site for the "Flash
    Media Development Server". Is that the "Flash Media Streaming
    Server" that Adobe allows to be downloaded for development? If
    that's the case, then shouldn't Netstream.time also be available
    for the "Flash Media Streaming Server"? In any case, this
    functionality seems pretty crucial to writing applications for
    streaming, why would it not be available?
    What I'm gettting at is that I'm trying to determine which
    server products our company needs for the project we are embarking
    on. The project is paid live streaming that authenticates a user,
    keeps track of his time viewing live streams, keeps track of which
    live stream he views, disconnects them when they run out of paid
    time, sends a message to them that they have run out of time, and
    shows them their time as it is ticking down.
    Can someone please clarify on the server components
    needed?

    If you want live streaming, authentication, and server side
    application logic, you want FMIS (interactive server).
    The development server has all the features of FMIS enabled
    but a limit of 10 connections. (eula is also different)

    You can load the files through infopackage by using Routines and pick the files based on date at the end of the file..***

    Create two folders in your BW in Application server level, in AL11 (ask Basis team)
    I call it is F1 and F2 folders.
    First dump the files into F1 I assume that the file name in F1 is "BW_LOAD_20090120.txt", using Unix code you rename the file and then keep in the same foleder F1 or move to F2.
    Then create InfoPackage and fix the file name (i.e. you renamed), so you don't need to change everyday your file name at infopackage level.Because in AL11 everyday the file are overwrite.
    To I get BW_LOAD_20090120.txt file in F1, then I renamed to BW_LOAD.txt and loaded into BW, then tomorrow I get BW_LOAD_20090125.txt in F1, then I renamed to BW_LOAD.txt....
    so in this way it will work.You need to schedule the Ubix script in AL11.
    This is the way how to handle the application server...I'm using the same logic.
