Mapping with Flash

Hey all. I am thinking about creating some kind of mapping
application using Flash. I already have done a little bit, using
the bitmapdata class along with a mysql database to create some
small mapping apps. I draw everything pixel by pixel and do my
queries based on what pixel they click on etc. I was just wondering
if someone could give me some advice on whether or not there is a
better way to create flash map type apps. I have been hearing about
this Flex product lately and was wondering if that's the best route
to take.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The database was some exported thing I was given from a piece
of software a colleague uses...fun I know! Anyway. I did a little
searching and found something kind of similar to what I am wanting
to create although this example is way more complex. When I look at
it there is one thing I'm not sure of. How do they first construct
the image and break it down into counties. Here is a link of what I
am talking about:
http://www.geoclip.fr/an/p24_atlas.php
The top right USA map for example. When you mouse over the
counties, it changes the alpha/color or whatnot and gives you a bit
of data. How do you think they are able to tell what county it is
and change the color accordingly? We'd really like to do something
similar to just that but with the pixel by pixel data they gave me,
going through and coloring the whole thing is slow. Yet, in this
link I found the coloring is nearly instant. Any ideas?

  • Attempting to create an interactive map with flash - getting errors with my actionscript

    I'm currently having an issue creating a set of buttons that are supposed to turn individual layers on and off.  The layers I have are: fishing spots, facilities, trails, map elements, an aerial photo, and parking lots.  It is giving error #s 1119 and 1120.  Could anyone explain possible reasons I'm getting these errors.
    It might be worth mentioning that I used a tutorial made with Flash CS4, but I'm writing the code in CS5.  Here is the exact code I'm using:
    spots._visible = false;
    facilities._visible = false;
    parking._visible = false;
    elements._visible = true;
    aerial._visible = false;
    trails._visible = false;
    displayedSpots._visible = false;
    displayedFacs._visible = false;
    displayedTrails._visible = false;
    displayedEles._visible = true;
    displayedAerial._visible = false;
    displayedPark._visible = false;
    fsbtn.onPress = function() {
              if (spots._visible == false) {
                        spots._visible = true;
                        displayedSpots._visible = true;
              } else {
                        spots._visible = false;
                        displayedSpots._visible = false;
    facbtn.onPress = function() {
              if (facilities._visible == false) {
                        facilities._visible = true;
                        displayedFacs._visible = true;
              } else {
                        facilities._visible = false;
                        displayedFacs._visible = false;
    trbtn.onPress = function() {
              if (trails._visible == false) {
                        trails._visible = true;
                        displayedTrails._visible = true;
              } else {
                        trails._visible = false;
                        displayedTrails._visible = false;
    mebtn.onPress = function() {
              if (elements._visible == false) {
                        elements._visible = true;
                        displayedEles._visible = true;
              } else {
                        elements._visible = false;
                        displayedEles._visible = false;
    aebtn.onPress = function() {
              if (aerial._visible == false) {
                        aerial._visible = true;
                        displayedAerial._visible = true;
              } else {
                        aerial._visible = false;
                        displayedAerial._visible = false;
    pbtn.onPress = function() {
              if (parking._visible == false) {
                        parking._visible = true;
                        displayedPark._visible = true;
              } else {
                        parking._visible = false;
                        displayedPark._visible = false;

    Only thing i see is that you are using == instead of = , Fixed Example...
    fsbtn.onPress = function() {
              if (spots._visible = false) {
                        spots._visible = true;
                        displayedSpots._visible = true;
              } else {
                        spots._visible = false;
                        displayedSpots._visible = false;
    == Is used for equality.
    = Is used for setting a value or in this case checking a value.

  • How to use tile map with AS3?

    I have a file that contains a bunch of isometric tiles that I need to make a map with, much like a sprite sheet but not for making animations. So using AS3, how can I divide that file into the different tiles, knowing the coordinates of each of them. Or can it be done automatically in Flash itself, so I can access each tile from AS3?
    Furthermore I've been a programmer for a couple of decades but I am new to Flash. I know there are a ton of DisplayObjects like Bitmap, Sprite, Shape, MovieClip, Symbol etc. But which one would be better to use for that file? I need to access it from AS3 as described above, but I don't need it to react to mouse events, stretch or have children, just extract each tile and move it onto the stage with AS3.
    It seems to be down to a choice between Bitmap and Shape, since they're both lightweight, but I couldn't find out what the advantages and disadvantages of them are, as there was no comparison between those two on Google, though between a lot of the other objects. And Symbol seems like an idea too, since when I googled this, I found a lot of pages saying that you should convert a Bitmap to a Symbol, but I never found out why.
    Oh, and since I'm building an isometric map, all the tiles and all other graphics I'll be using, will be Bitmap and not Vector since I'm drawing the graphics in pixelart.

    create one tile symbol (movieclip or sprite so you can use actionscript to reference tile properties - like its x and y) and arrange them (using code or by hand) into your map.
    enable the cacheAsBitmap property of your map (that has some number of tile children).
    assign the mouseEnabled property of the map to false and its mouseChildren property to false.

  • Setting up a New Site and Having Issues with Flash SWF's

    Hello.  I just set up a new site definition, with a testiing server using MAMP Pro, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except that my swf's are not showing up when you publish to a browser from dreamweaver, instead you get the place holder message to upgrade to the newest version of flashplayer... besides the fact that my computers flash player is up to date.  At this point in time my two other websites swf components work just fine when I publish out of dreamweaver.
    I'd also like to mention that the Live View works perfectly and is displayinig the swf's as they should be.
    Thanks!

    I copied the associated scripts over to the site folder on the testing server and I'm getting the same results.  I'm sure this is something that is really simple.  Here is the code:<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

  • Google earth like map in flash

    Hello,
    I am studying land surveying and cartography and I am doing my final project. I am trying to make a google  earth like map in Flash.I allready have the map , in the form of swf  files. the idea is that  when the user will scroll, an swf is going to be substituted with another one   Can anyone give me any hints on how to do it?

    If you want to have one swf replqace another then you probably want to use some form of loader.  Which form you use is up to you, but the most basic is simply the Loader class.  A loader is only able to load/hold one loaded object at a time, but you can reload it with other content and replace what is there as you wish.
    You should Google "AS3 Loader tutorial" to get an idea of how to load external files (such as swf's).

  • Google maps for flash been Deprecated !

    Hello. i just wana notify the comunity about a serious step tooken from google to kill the maps for flash, because seems like they can not handle them.
    I would like to hear Adobe opinion - can Adobe do their developers a favor and asign a programmers to took close deal with google and continue the maps for flash ?
    This is not a simple issue, it will be a vital for the future development of many things connected to Adobe and Google.
    Please consider the question carefully.

    http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/flash/
    "Note: The Google Maps API for Flash has been officially deprecated as of September 2, 2011. The API will continue to work as per ourdeprecation policy, but we encourage you to migrate your applications to version 3 of the Maps JavaScript API."
    The statement is perfectly LOL.
    And seems like google can not pay 2-3 more developers to took care for thoose API,
    The forum comunity related to this API vould like to ask if can Adobe took care on it because they have proven as a good team of developers already.

  • Google Maps with AS2

    Hi all,
    Is there an easy way of embeding a movable google maps in Flash CS6 using AS2. The Google Maps API for flash won't provide anyone with new API keys anymore. I wondering if there is a way to use an HTML iframe in flash as then I would be able to somply embed the map in my Flash document using the code that google gives you.
    Thanks in advance

    you should be able to use the javascript api with actionscript's externalinterface to use google maps and as2.

  • Problem with "Building interactive maps with Flex" example

    I have been looking at the tutorial by Matt Sheehan Building interactive maps with Flex found at
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/interactive_maps.edu.html
    I have downloaded  Flash Builder 4.6 trial version and followed the example. I have also copied the source code from the example and pasted that into the file mymodestmap.mxml.
    In both cases the application opens a new page in Google Chrome but does not display any map data.
    No errors or warnings are displayed when I run the code from Flash Builder.
    Although I have got plenty of experience of writing software, I am a total beginner when it comes to developing web applications!
    Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong, I have attached the source below.

    Technically, it's Javascript, not Java :) TOTALLY different beasts. I wish they'd never named it Javascript, it's ambiguous. So anyway, on to the point of the whole thing...
    If you want quotes in your values, you'll need to write a function to replace " with \", and pass the values through it. So instead of javascript:passBack('#ENAME#','#JOB#','#SAL#'); you would have javascript:passBack(addslashes('#ENAME#'),addslashes('#JOB#'),addslashes('#SAL#'));. That would mean that ABC"DEF"GH would be passed to the function as ABC\"DEF\"GH and your quotes would stay intact. Search around on the internet for more specifics as to how to pass double quotes in javascript by using backslashes.

  • I can't access to Youtube and Google Maps with Safari

    Hello,
    I've a MacBook Pro and I can't go to Youtube and Google Maps with Safari. I've also tried with Firefox but the problem is still not solved.
    Actually, Safari (or Firefox) keeps charging the page but is unable to get it. I always see a blank page. It only happens with these two websites. Other sites are working perfectly.
    I've tried so many things like installing the flash, erasing cookies or cache, installing updates but nothing helped. This is really annoying. Just to give you an example, if I try to localize my MacBook I just can't see where it is as the map is not appearing.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you!
    Mac OS X 10.7.4
    Safari 5.1.7

    Hi CMCSK!
    Thanks for your answer.
    I bought my Mac in August 2011. In the first weeks, I couldn't see YouTube videos which was normal as the flash wasn't installed. I therefore installed the latest version of Abode's flash and it worked well. But maybe 1 month or more later, I don't know what happened: it began difficult or even impossible to load YouTube website. I first thought this was a problem with Safari. I downloaded Firefox but the problem remained the same: impossible to go to YouTube. I followed the instructions to uninstall the flash and to install it again. Nothing helped. I waited for an update for Safari but it didn't solve my problem.
    As I've already said, the browser (Safari or Firefox) keeps loading the page and after 1 or 2 minutes I see "Safari can't open the page because the server where this page is located isn't responding".
    To come back to this:
    if I try to localize my MacBook I just can't see where it is as the map is not appearing.
    Well I wanted to give you an example of the problem itself (with Google Maps here). If I go to iCloud and try to localize my Mac, I can see the green circle but the map is not loaded. I don't know why it isn't working. Whenever there is a Google Map on a website (e.g. a restaurant giving its localization with a small Google Map) I can't see it. I only see a light grey background with question marks everywhere. I also see this grey background when I go to the website of Google.
    I hope you see more what the problem is.
    Thank you

  • Creating custom maps with adobe flex

    Hi,
    does anybody have an example how to build a map with adobe flex that looks and behaves like the original xcelsius maps? I don't want to use the jpeg/alert-solution.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Kumar is using Google Maps in his Flex-Application. I think that BO isn't using Google in the Xcelsius Maps. But how is BO creating maps? With Flex, Flash in Flex? It would be nice if someone of BO could upload a tutorial with an example. Then many users can create there own maps.

  • Trying to get wireless remote to work with Flash Presentation... HELP!!!

    I know almost nothing about Flash or Powerpoint.  I was given a Flash presentation I need that I'd like to show at meetings using my new wireless remote, but I can't get it to move forward & backward between slides (works fine using arrow keys on the laptop keyboard - Windows XP Pro).  The remote works fine with Powerpoint presentations, so I know the remote is ok.  Is there some setting/command I need to allow my Flash presentation to work with my remote, or do I need a special remote?  I already talked to the remote tech support (Keyspan/TrippLite) and they were totally unfamiliar wirh Flash and simply said that their unit works with Powerpoint as advertised, which was true, but they couldn't help me with Flash presentations.  Can anyone out there help me??  Thanks very much!

    Hi, and thanks so much for responding!  I have the Keyspan PR-EZ1 and I don't think it allows me to "map" keys since when I called their tech support, they didn't mention that as an option.  I'm really new at this, but I just noticed - as I was sitting right here on my browser earlier, I pressed the remote's slide-changing keys and my web page scrolled up and down!  Just now I tried it and my insertion point cursor moved up and down!  So I guess these buttons must be "mapped" to the up and down arrows.  How nice it would be if I could somehow figure out how to switch them to the left and right arrows.  A colleague of mine told me just an hour or so ago that when she bought her Logitech wireless remote, it had the same problem with Flash presentations.  But one day, out of the blue, it "fixed" itself and now does Flash fine.  (I didn't ask her if it still does Powerpoint though.)  She has no idea how or why and doesn't care.  Her remote is a discontinued model though (sigh).  Anyway, maybe it'll be worth my while to make another call to tech support and ask about key mapping.  Maybe a more advanced model might allow this function.  Thanks for the spark!

  • Create New Map with GIS software?

    I would like to create a county map split by zip codes.
    Can I create a flash map in a GIS package that I can then use in Xcelsius.
    Thanks

    Datasavvytools.com offers customized maps with same features of default Xcelsius Maps. Gmapsplugin.com offers a google map based solution.

  • Errors on my web site started with Flash Player Release a few days ago (Mar 28, 2012)

    Hi,
    I have a Flash based video player on my website.  This was designed and implemented based on an article vy Lisa Larson-Kelley.  It has run flawlessly for several years.  But, when I installed the lastest release of Flash Player a fedw days ago (Mar 28, 2012), I am now getting really annoying issues with the Flash Video Player.
    I expect that I will need to place insturctions for users on how to roll back their version of Flash Player, since this latest version is broken.
    But, many of the people who visit my site are not tech oriented (they are mostly friends and family, so, I don't expect that they will really roll back their version of Flash player.
    I am 100% certain the issue is the latest version of Flash, since these errors never occurred until I installed the latest version.
    On my work laptop, I have an older version of Flas (10.x.x) and this probelm does not happen.  On my desktop PC at home, I have an older version of Flash 11 installed, and this problem does not happen (in IE9).  The version of Flash PLayer 11 where the issue does *not* occur is 11.1.102.63.
    On that same desktop PC, if I use Chrome, (which automatically defaults to the latest version of Flash which is 11.2.202.228, I get the problems.  So, there is no question that the issue is with the latest version of Flash and not my hardware or drivers.  I get the same problems on three different computers.
    My website has a username and password.  If someone from Adobe wants to replicate the problem send me an e-mail and I will send you the username and password.
    The videoplayer on my website is at this url:  http://www.jjjhi.com/TryMakingFlashVidPlayer/VideoPlaylist.html (but, you will need the username and password).
    The issue is that sometimes (not always) when you select a video to play, inistead of the video loading into the panel as it should (sized as 1025 x 578), instead, all you see is the control skin.  The video begins to play, but all you get is the audio.  It looks like this:
    You can recover from this error by using the skin control to make the image full screen, but, the video looks poor at fulls screen, because it is created at 1024 x 578.  You can then get the correct size by returning from full screen, but, I don't want the pepole who visit my cif\deo playet to have to go all through that.  Especially since most won't even know enough to try making the video full screen.
    This doesn't happen for every video on my web site, but, once it *does* happen once...it will happen for every video selection you make.
    This is unacceptable, and it absolutely a function of Flash version 11.2.202.228.
    Adobe:  Please fix this bug as soon as possible.
    I've implemented an HTML5 based video player and have begun populating it with mp4 versions of my video clips, but, quite honestly, the playback using HTML5 is much worse than with Flash.  I encoded the clips in the HTML5 player with the same Variable Bit Rates as in the F4V clips, and, in the HTML5 player, there are missed frames, and the audio can get out of sync.  So, I *want* to keep using my Flash Based video player, but...if Adobe doesn;t fix this, I will just dial down my VBR till I find one that is slow enough to play in HTML5 and ditch Flash.
    My HTML5 video player is here:
    http://www.jjjhi.com/TryMakingNewVideoPlayer/NewVidPlayer_option1_jth.html
    (again you need the username and password to use it, send me an e-mail and I will give them to you, I just don't want to post them in an open forum).
    Here is a bitmap of the page:  It is quite snazzy looking and is based on an excellent class from Chris Converse at Lynda.com.  But, even though it is 'snazzy looking' the HTML5 player performs poorly on an under-powered machine (like my work laptop).  It uses 100% CPU and misses frames and the audio loses sync.  The same videos encoded with the same VBR for Flash (F4V) play great, *except for the new issue described above!!!!)
    I Adobe can fix this issue with Flash Player 11.2.202.228  ASAP, else, I will  have to 'downgrade' to an HTML5 based video player, that, quite honestly does not perform as well as Flash.
    If you want to reproduce the problem contact me at my e-mail address: [email protected] and I'll send you the username and password.
    You can then prove that the problem does not exist with prior version of Flash player (before 11.2.202.228) but *does* exist with this latest buggy release.
    Thanks,
    John

    Thanks.
    I sent the username and PW to you and Chris.
    Cheers,
    John
