Mapviewer 10.1.3.3 & 11g Database (Mixed Case Passwords)

We have an 11g Database that enforces the use of Mixed Case passwords via a Database policy applied to individual schemas. On our 10.1.3 Application server we have deployed the 10.1.3.3 Mapviewer ear and are having issue configuring the JDBC connections.
It appears that when you enter your Password in the XML config file using "!myPassword" this gets hashed but any case sensitive values are ignored meaning the connection fails when trying to establish a connection to the database i.e. the database is expecting "myPassword" and Mapviewer hands of "mypassword".
The only way around this is to use a lower case password at the database level so that Mapviewer can connect.
Is this a know issue and if so, are there any plans to use a Case Sensitive hashing algorithith in a future version of MapViewer?
Regards
Duncan

Is this the latest MapViewer kit (10.1.3.3, WebLogic certified)?
One work around is to use container data source, assuming the container (Oracle AS) can handle case sensitive database passwords.

  • Mixed -Case Passwords?

    Is it possible to create users with mixed-case passwords? For example, CREATE USER "User01" IDENTIFIED BY "SaMpLePaSsWoRd";
    The documentation for Oracle 9.2 says this is possible and recommended but running the command above via SQL*Plus does not seem to work because I am able to login to the database no matter if I type it exactly as above or all UPPER CASE or lower case.
    If there is no way to do this then my application cannot comply with our security standards and I need to choose a database other than Oracle

    Oracle does not actually store the password anywhere. The value you see in the password field in DBA_USERS is a hash based on the user name, the password suplpied and some "magic salt". When a user logs in , the username and password supplied plus the salt are hashed then compared to the value in the password field. A basic test shows:
    SQL> CREATE FUNCTION verifier (userid_parameter IN VARCHAR,
      2                                       password_parameter IN VARCHAR,
      3                                       old_password_parameter IN VARCHAR)
      4  RETURN BOOLEAN IS
      5
      6  BEGIN
      7     IF UPPER(password_parameter) = password_parameter OR
      8        LOWER(password_parameter) = password_parameter THEN
      9        RETURN FALSE;
    10     END IF;
    11     RETURN TRUE;
    12  END;
    13  /
    Function created.
    SQL> CREATE PROFILE pwtest LIMIT PASSWORD_VERIFY_FUNCTION verifier;
    Profile created.
    SQL> CREATE USER jtest IDENTIFIED BY MyTest
      2  PROFILE pwtest;
    CREATE USER jtest IDENTIFIED BY MyTest
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-28003: password verification for the specified password failed
    ORA-28003: password verification for the specified password failedSo, the function sort of works, but obviously, Oracle is changing the password to all one case (I would bet UPPER) since
    SQL> CREATE USER jtest IDENTIFIED BY "MyTest"
      2  PROFILE pwtest;
    User created.passes validation. Oracle will never change the case of anything within double quotes. However, it appears that the profile only enforces the rules at password creation time, not at login since:
    SQL> GRANT CONNECT TO jtest;
    Grant succeeded.
    SQL> CONNECT jtest/mytest;
    Connected.So, it would appear that you cannot really enforce mixed case passwords. You can however enforce almost anything else, such as minimun length, combinations of letters, numbers and some special characters, or almost anything else that does not depend on the case of the password.
    Given the many other security and auditing features available with Oracle, not to mention power of the product itself, I would hope that the lack of mixed case passwords would not cause you to choose a different vendor.

  • Oracle 11g database stores CAS number incorrectly in chemical database.

    Hi,
    I have an issue in Oracle 11g database. I am working on a chemical database which handles chemical structures ,formulas, CAS numbers, ACX number. The database has a compound table which stores compound attributes like chemical structure, molecular weight, CAS number and so on. The CAS number is of type varchar2(15) and will be in the format 50-50-0. All the CAS numbers will be in this format.
    The issue which I found specific to Oracle11g database is that when a CAS number is edite and saved from the application it changes into some random characters like AEAAAA8AA in the table. With Oracle 10g version there were no issues. Can anyone please help me to understand what could be the reason for this? Looking forward to your replies on this.
    Thanks

  • Mixed case table/col names and JDeveloper?

    I am thinking of trying to use mixed case table/column names in my Oracle 8i database.
    My hope is to achieve table/column names consistent with Java conventions (which I am happy with).
    Would this work with Jdeveloper 3.1? 3.2?
    Will JDeveloper/BC4J then generate mixed case names?
    Will I cause my self lots of pain and suffering? (I don't consider having to enter a correct mixed case name a pain; I do consider always having to quote it and/or use TOUPPER, etc. a bit of pain)
    Thanks

    I do consider always having to quote it and/or use TOUPPER, etc. a bit of pain)<<<JDEV isn't as much the issue. If you have simple applications and don't intend to change things over time, or create lots of interfaces, or support multiple development tools against the same database, mixed cases seem to work fine.
    To give yourself an idea of how cumbersome things will be, go in and
    create "myTable" ( "myField" varchar2(20) );
    now DESC ribe the table,
    select myField from it.
    Putting doublequotes around things all the time gets very irritating. Remember it is also for having special characters and embedded spaces... and I don't know of any PL/SQL SET ( other than the opposite: SQLCASE that forces just about everything to uppercase ).
    Oh, and then you get to encounter fun things like ODBC and JDBC drivers that may or may not like it. Or if you MOVE/EXPORT the data around, your target may or may not be happy.
    Working at several diversified, large organization with MANY database products/targets, I've become very disenchanted with making mixed case attributes and table names!
    All tools should support mixed case correctly. Reality has returned a mixed case of results. grin or not, as the case may be.

  • Confused about Mapviewer and SQL in OBIEE 11g.

    I read in another post that you cant use mapviewer unless you have an oracle database.
    Here is my confusion. The mapviewer product comes with OBIEE 11g, Correct?
    If I use Google Maps, and load the map information into an SQL data base, why wouldnt I be able to get it to work?
    I cant believe that Oracle, who makes a big deal about how OBIEE can work with "Any data source", would provide a key function
    that would only work with an Oracle data base, thereby purposely excluding many of their customers from using that key function.
    Someone please clear this up for me because we need to use maps and we use SQL Server 2008  for our data warehouse.

    Hi katherine,
    FILTER(count(distinct("customer info dimesion"."customerID")) USING ("TradeType Dimesion"."TradeType" = '001'))I think your formula there is mistake like many braces...instead type this in your f(x)
    =>Filter(count(distinct customer_id) USING trade type='001')
    This filter function is same like a case statement,if you filter still gives error write a case statement
    CASE WHEN TradeType Dimesion.TradeType='001' THEN count(distinct customer info dimesion.customerID) ELSE 0 END
    Will it be helpful?,follow this etiquette http://forums.oracle.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=939

    Whenever an ORA-600 error is raised a trace file is generated and an entry written to the alert.log with details of the trace file location. Starting with Oracle Database 11g Release 1, the diagnosability infrastructure was introduced which places the trace and core files into a location controlled by the DIAGNOSTIC_DEST initialization parameter when an incident, such as an ORA-600 is created. For earlier versions, the trace file will be written to either USER_DUMP_DEST (if the error was caught in a user process) or BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST (if the error was caught in a background process like PMON or SMON). The trace file contains vital information about what led to the error condition

  • What should i do with an Oracle 11g Database, MySQL database and a dump file.

    I just joining to a new work field, almost about a database and i know "NOTHING" about this field.
    My company has a system that running by Oracle Database, the problem is that Oracle Database will cost a lot of money when my company expands.
    So the quest is converting Oracle Database to MySQL database.
    Of course i cant try to convert it in the main Database, so i create one Oracle 11g Database on my LocalHost, and it already actived in " Localhost:1158 " etc.
    I have another Sever test that already set up MySQL database, and a dump file from the system.
    So I want to ask these 2 questions :
    1. How to create an new Oracle Database from that dump file ?
    2. Is it alright if i use tool to convert Oracle Database into MySql, or i should do it manually ?
    Thanks alot.

    I just joining to a new work field, almost about a database and i know "NOTHING" about this field.
    My company has a system that running by Oracle Database, the problem is that Oracle Database will cost a lot of money when my company expands.
    So the quest is converting Oracle Database to MySQL database.
    I predict that converting to MySQL will cost your company more as it expands. As you expand managing contention becomes more important - Oracle does this for you. I do not think MySQL does, so you'll have to write more code to deal with this, costing the company money. A big part of making application scalable and reliable is to use stored procedures, how good are MySQL's compared to PL/SQL's. What other features are there that MySQL has that will benefit your company that Oracle doesn't. What do you need to think about as your company expands that need to be taken care of in the database. I would have thought a migration from MySQL to Oracle would be more common to deal with expansion.
    As you know "NOTHING" you need to think about what each database can give you for the next 10 years to cope with you businesses potential requirements, and extimate how much it will cost to implement these requirements, then make the decision

    Use SQL*Plus to execute SQL, PL/SQL and SQL*Plus statements.
    Usage 1: sqlplus -H | -V
        -H             Displays the SQL*Plus version and the
                       usage help.
        -V             Displays the SQL*Plus version.
    Usage 2: sqlplus [ [<option>] [<logon>] [<start>] ]
      <option> is: [-C <version>] [-L] [-M "<options>"] [-R <level>] [-S]
        -C <version>   Sets the compatibility of affected commands to the
                       version specified by <version>.  The version has
                       the form "x.y[.z]".  For example, -C 10.2.0
        -F             Enables the failover mode for a RAC environment.
        -L             Attempts to log on just once, instead of
                       reprompting on error.
        -M "<options>" Sets automatic HTML markup of output.  The options
                       have the form:
                       HTML [ON|OFF] [HEAD text] [BODY text] [TABLE text]
                       [ENTMAP {ON|OFF}] [SPOOL {ON|OFF}] [PRE[FORMAT] {ON|OFF}]
        -R <level>     Sets restricted mode to disable SQL*Plus commands
                       that interact with the file system.  The level can
                       be 1, 2 or 3.  The most restrictive is -R 3 which
                       disables all user commands interacting with the
                       file system.
        -S             Sets silent mode which suppresses the display of
                       the SQL*Plus banner, prompts, and echoing of
                       commands.
      <logon> is: (<username>[/<password>][@<connect_identifier>] | /)
                  [AS SYSDBA | AS SYSOPER | AS SYSASM] | /NOLOG | [EDITION=value]
        Specifies the database account username, password and connect
        identifier for the database connection.  Without a connect
        identifier, SQL*Plus connects to the default database.
        The AS SYSDBA, AS SYSOPER and AS SYSASM  options are database
        administration privileges.
        <connect_identifier> can be in the form of Net Service Name
        or Easy Connect.
          @[<net_service_name> | [//]Host[:Port]/<service_name>]
            <net_service_name> is a simple name for a service that resolves
            to a connect descriptor.
            Example: Connect to database using Net Service Name and the
                     database net service name is ORCL.
               sqlplus myusername/mypassword@ORCL
            Host specifies the host name or IP address of the database
            server computer.
            Port specifies the listening port on the database server.
            <service_name> specifies the service name of the database you
            want to access.
            Example: Connect to database using Easy Connect and the
                     Service name is ORCL.
               sqlplus myusername/mypassword@Host/ORCL
        The /NOLOG option starts SQL*Plus without connecting to a
        database.
        The EDITION specifies the value for Application
        Edition
      <start> is: @<URL>|<filename>[.<ext>] [<parameter> ...]
        Runs the specified SQL*Plus script from a web server (URL) or the
        local file system (filename.ext) with specified parameters that
        will be assigned to substitution variables in the script.
    When SQL*Plus starts, and after CONNECT commands, the site profile
    (e.g. $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/glogin.sql) and the user profile
    (e.g. login.sql in the working directory) are run.  The files may
    contain SQL*Plus commands.
    Refer to the SQL*Plus User's Guide and Reference for more information.

  • What are the privileges required for explain plan in Oracle 11g database

    I am facing the problem in doing a explain plan for a view in Oracle 11g database. When I select from the view like this:
    select * from zonewisearpu
    It does a select on the view but when I give explain plan like
    explain plan for
    select * from zonewisearpu
    I get the error like insufficient privileges.
    Please let me know if things are getting missed out as I guess system level privileges are required to execute this.
    I hope, my question is clear.
    It’s a humble request to revert urgently if possible as I need to complete a task and do not know the way out.
    Regards

    Thanks for your reply. I have found out that an explain plan is possible on the user's own objects and is not possible on the granted objects from a different schema. For eg, if I do a explain plan on a view querying on tables from a different view, it would not allow the explain plan to proceed. This could mean that explain plan needs different privileges than just a select.
    Requesting for a revert to this.
    Here is a simple test case that I have perfomed
    SQL> create user test1 identified by test1;
    User created.
    SQL> create user test2 identified by test1;
    User created.
    SQL> grant connect, resource to test1,test2;
    Grant succeeded.
    SQL> create table test1.tab1 as select * from v$session;
    Table created.
    SQL> connect test2/test1

    SQL> show user
    USER is "TEST2"
    SQL>
    SQL> explain plan for
      2  select sid,serial#,status,username from test1.tab1 where username<> '';
    Explained.

    So, as can be seen I am able to do a explain plan from user test2 for tables belong to user test1.
    As far as privileges are concerned, following is the list

  • How to monitor oracle 11g database sessions on Windows 2008 server?

    Hi Experts
    How to monitor the Oracle 11g database sessions on Windows 2008 server (other than SQL Developer tool), which procedure or query is taking more time with Java application.

    Recently i found this tool- myorasql on the net to monitor the performence of database, easy to setup and check the performence.  i never tested it but seems impresive.  It is free and i think it would be use ful to you.
    http://myorasql.com/
    You can also use Quest - Toad or sqlplus if you are very good at sql commands and all dictionary tables or OEM/EM grid if it is configured .
