Master file for several catalogs -

Please see "Have filled hard drive with 3200 images - now what ? http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c06058d/6 for the beginnings of this question:
I appreciate your time and input - let me see if I can explain myself a little better - if we relate each lightroom catalog to an old 4 drawer filling cabinet ( an original filling system and an antique to some ) - the size of the cabinet depends on the size of the hard drive but it will eventually get full - once that cabinet is full a new cabinet ( hard drive ) must be purchased - in the old days a whole new set of folders needed to be created to file your papers and/or images - such as a Job drawerr that contains your clients folders that contain the individual jobs etc. - or an art folder that contains art categories that contains dates etc. - once you have several of these filing cabinets filled if you don't have a general starting place ( lets say you are a new employee ) or a MASTER FILE - you will have to search through each cabinet to find what you are looking for - I don't find any way of creating a master file in lightroom - try making two new catalogs ( doesn't matter where you put them ) - in these new catalogs put 4 images - call them bozo1, clara1, emit1, and red1 on one catalog and bozo2 etc on the second - give them key words of findtest1 and findtest2 - now go back to your original catalog and try to find any of these files in the find window using file name or key word - I can't do it, the catalogs do not talk to each other - isn't this a step backwards in a large data management program - am I missing something - is there a way to open a new catalog with existing file folders and/or a master file system for all catalogs? Thanks again for your help T Etter

Lee, thank you for responding - LR does no support multiple catalog searches - is tis planned in another version at any time?
John,
using the store analogy - if I have 100 categories of books each on one set of shelves on one floor and the floor just has no more room to put any more books in any of the shelving - I add a new floor - I will either need to create all new shelving for each category ( ie 100 new folders and sub folders ) on the second floor - then put all my first floor categories in a first floor folder in the main catalog - then create a second floor folder with a remake of all the same categories - this will give me two floor folders each having the same shelving subfolders in the main catalog - or - I can move half of my shelving and books to the second floor ( drive ) so that I have room on both floors and can still use the original folders.
is there any way in lightroom to continue using the original first floor folders and have lightroom file my books on the second floor or third floor and keep track of which floor they are on using one set of folders.
if I move half of my folders - that will eventually fill up and require another split -
if I create all new folders that will also eventually require that I create them again when that floor (drive ) fills up - do I have another option ? Thanks again

  • Export as a master file FOR Youtube?

I want to export my videos for uploading to Youtube, however at the moment the file size is enormous (we're talking 6gb for a 4 minute video), which of course takes forever to upload.
I want to export it as a master file, rather than exporting it directly to youtube within FCPX, because I want to have an actual copy of the file on my computer, as well as the fact that I've been having some trouble with the youtube sign in through FCPX, so basically I've just been export in as a Master File with all the default settings for 1080p.
Anyway, what settings should I use to get a good quality video that isn't so enormous that it takes ages to upload?
Sorry, I'm pretty new to this, and kind of teaching myself as I go along.
When uploading to Youtube, it suggests uploading a different format for faster processing/uploading...
So I clicked the link to the help centre where it talked about how to encode the video. But I'm still trying to learn all this, so I'm not sure if this is something I need to do when i first start the Project, or if there are settings I should change when I export it as a Master File, or if there is something I've just missed altogether.
I'll include screen shots of Youtube's recommendations.
Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated Thankyou!

    My suggestion: keep it simple.
The simplest way is to export a master file AND also export to youtube. There is nothing preventing you from making several exports of the same material!
(As it happens, you can also do this "double export" in one fell swoop, using destination bundles - but, again, keep it simple; you can learn that later).
Anyway, you certainly don't need Compressor. Compressor is only useful if you need something specific that FCP X can't directly provide - but that usually means an experienced user who knows his/her way around the arcane compression options - in other words, complex stuff.
If you don't want to use FCP X to export directly to youtube: just export a Master File, but instead of the default (which is ProRes, and, as Karsten explained and you acutely felt, produces massive files), choose H264. Then upload via the youtube site.

  • Paraemeter files for several database

    Hi everyone,
I'm relatively new to oracle. I'm trying to create additional database after the default database has been created using command line sql statements.
I get an error that the name does not match the one in the parameter file. Does Oracle use one initialization file for all the databases created or can I create an initialization paratemeter file for every database I create, and if so, how do I tell the server which Initialization parameter file to use duirng the database creation process?
    Cheers
    dula

Every database should have its own unique parameter file or better yet use its own unique spfile. This is covered in the DBA Administration manual which has a chapter on how to create a database. See Ch 2 Creating an Oracle Database topic Step 3: Create the Initialization Parameter File (ver 9.2)
Basically Oracle by default looks in the $ORALCE_HOME/dbs/ directory for the spfile and if it does not find it looks for the default init.ora with the name constructed as initSID.ora.

  • How do I find where the master file for a version in aperture 3

I was wondering how to find where the original master image is in the aperture 3 library. For instance we have several images that are in different albums and folders but are trying to find where the original image is in the library.

Is your Library managed or referenced?
If your library is referenced, then you can reveal the master image file by selecting the image in the browser and selecting "File -> Show in Finder" from the menu.
If your library is managed you will have to open the Library package to see the master image files: Ctrl-click the Aperture library and select "Show Package Contents" from the Pop-up menu. Then browse the folder "Masters", but very carefully - don't change anything inside the package! The Masters-folder is arranged by date: year, month, day ...
But you can always look at the master image files from inside Aperture - much safer: Select any image and type "m" - that will show you what the master image file is like - type "m" again to view the version.

  • How do find the master files for backgrounds so that I can make edits to them?

for example - change the color using photoshop and then create a new template?
I want to create a custom background for students to use in our daily announcements at school.   I would like to have our school colors in the background and create specific masters for the kids to use.
maybe this is addressed in another discussion, but I couldn't find it.  Thanks for any advise!

What you would do is create a Master slide then save your designs as a Theme
    View > edit  Master Slides
select the blank slide and add your content
    File > Save Theme

  • Configuration file for servlets

    Hi, everyone
    I have one problem,I can't solve:
I want write configuration file for several servlets (by incapsulating my static class Config in DBServlet subclass), but I don't know how can I find this config file in runtime( it will be placed, as I think in root documents directory of web-server).
I can't use no method of DBServlet and HTTPRequest on its initialization phase (suche methods as getServletContext, getServerName, getServerPort and others), so
I can't get real path of root documents directory of web-server.
If I will read this file by URL like "localhost/config.cfg" there will be problem in web-server configuration with access permissions, I think.
Is there some standard ways to find and read in servlet runtime from file , which is placed in root documents directory of web-server.
    Thanks in advance, Ed

    Ed,
Your configuration file must be in your CLASSPATH.

  • Read raw files for nikon d5200 camera

I have given up using raw files for several Nikon bodies such as the d5200 on Adobe software since Adobe no longer supports these files even with the updates that are supposed to support these files.  I can open the raw files fine using Nikon software to work on them and then save them as a tiff or jpeg to be used in photoshop, but this seems rather time consuming plus I lose the advantage of working on raw files in Photoshop.  You would think that a company like Adobe would make it easy to open raw files for all cameras.  Some bodies like the Nikon d300 raw files still work fine on Adobe software.

ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) versions are specific to different versions of Photoshop.
According to this link on Adobe's website regarding supported cameras
The Nikon 5200 required at least ACR 7.3, but you need Photoshop CS6 to run ACR 7.3 It won't work with older versions of Photoshop.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
You can download the latest version of DNG Converter and convert your 5200 files to DNGs that can then be opened in earlier versions of Photoshop.
Here is the link for Windows: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 8.4
Here is the link for Mac: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh
The DNG Converter only works on folders of files, don't try to select an individual file to convert, Choose the FOLDER.

  • Segregate 3+ star raw and xmp files for cloud backup

    Hi,
I don't think there is a way to do this, but I thought I would ask.  I have  few terabytes of photo's that are cataloged in lightroom.  Only a few hundred gig are photo's that I rated 3-5 stars and are the only ones that I would want to be 100% certain I don't loose in a perfect storm data loss scenario.
I currently use windows 7 import everything into one master folder for my catalog, then sort and rate them all. Is there any way to direct lightroom to separate all photo's with a 3-5 star rating on my actual hard drive into a separate folder or duplicate them into another folder for cloud back-up?  I've tried showing the rating column in window, but it doesn't seem to bring my lightroom star ratings into windows.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Thank you for the replies, sorry for the delayed repsonse, I've been in an "Edge Network" area for 2 days.  I am going to check ou the Publish services and see if this will meet my needs.
You are correct that this is simply my "hell in a handbasket" back-up solution.  I have a very robust local backup, that includes raid along with on and offsite versioned back-ups, so this is simply there just in case.  If I lost everything but these photo's I'd still be okay, it's only 20% of so of my catalog so it's more practical to back up 400 or 500 gb though uploads.  Backing up the whole catalog might be an option, but it's a lot of extra time and bandwidth.  Perhaps it will become more practical in the coming months and years.
Having said all of that, I would prefer to simply back-up the 3-5 star photo's in their original folders rather than duplicate them though an export.  I get the impression that the Publish services acts like a real-time dynamic filter that throws the 3-5 star photo's in a separate location that I will tag as a cloud back-up.  If I have to do it that way I will, but it's just more storage and complication.  Still it does provide a solution that I don't currently have.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Using LR 5 on Mac w/ OS 10.9 have several catalogs on several externals with some duplicates and file name changes due to using NIK, elements, LR, etc.  would like to combine or merge into "master" catalogue

II'm new to forums so be kind and I'm also 70 years old so explain simply.

Hi rushbo. I am of the opinion that it is much better to save as much information with the files. Use Lightroom to organize and process the images, but keep the data with the images when possible. (There are tradeoffs to this approach, mostly speed and complexity, but it means that there is one place to look for information about a file, even if you have multiple catalogs).
If you agree with this, first read What Is Not Included In Lightroom XMP Files | Lightroom Fanatic to see what data is not saved.
Then I would go from the oldest to the newest catalog, and for each turn on "Catalog settings:automatically write changes into xmp" and then save the metadata for all the files in the catalog (Select All; Save Metadata).  You might also want to choose "Delete Rejected Files" to get rid of them permanently.
Do this for each catalog, and at the end every image will have the settings from the latest catalog (earlier values will be overwritten).
Then create a new catalog and import the files. This will bring in every image in your directory tree (wherever you store images on your disk). It might even discover some images that aren't in your catalogs. And each image will have the latest data. Finally archive your old catalogs "just in case".
This process can be slow, so put on a movie...

  • Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, it only allows 9 spaces for my new name, even though Aperature 3 allows many more spaces than that for version names. This creates a lot of problems and headaches for me.

Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, Aperature 3 only recognizes the first 9 spaces for raw .NEF files, even though it easily uses twice that many spaces for version names. I have a system in place that works really well for me, wherein by changing the file name I can recognize what's important to me just by glancing at the file name, no matter what system it is in, I do not have to open or mouse over anything to know what the file is. My files also arrange themselves in order no matter what file system they are in. Can someone please tell me if there is a setting, or something I am doing wrong, that prevents me from using a longer Master file name. I can't be the only person who would like to have his Master File names correspond to the name that appears in the Aperature library, and would like to use at least 16 spaces (numbers, letters, etc.)
    Thanks,
    Photo Al

    Hi Frank,
As you suggested, I am attaching several screen shots. In the first one you can see how I set up my preset. I used "Custom Name" and "Counter" with a dot between the two drag ins, followed by "D90". I also have a dot to seperate the 8 digits in the Custom Name and make it easier to read.
I then click "OK" which takes us to the second screen shot. Here you can see that in the Example File Name everything looks perfect, and you can see I have clicked on "Apply to Master Files".
In the third screen shot you can see that the version in my library did in fact change correctly. With the "mouse over" pop up screen you can see, however, that the Master File name was changed  to "1933.1017.NEF". It failed to carry the "12D90" and if I go to where my masters are stored that is exactly what the name was changed to.
In the fourth screen shot I attempt to export the master. You can see how my "Version Name" is set up.
And finally on the 5th screen shot you see in the File Name Example the name "1933.1017.NEF" once again, which when I export the master is exactly how the name will appear. Since I will export more than one file at a time , a (1) and  a (2)  etc., will appear at the end of the names because all the files are being given the same "1933.1017.NEF" name.
I hope this reply does a better job of clarifying my problem. I am anxious to see if this is something I simply misunderstood, or if I am simply doing something wrong.
    Thanks,
    Photo Al

  • Is it possible to make master pages with several  title in one file? & Can I define page range from

Is it possible to make master pages with several  title in one file? & Can I define page range from which page to which should be specific title?

While the number of master pages is not unlimited, you can have quite a few in any file. I've never seen the limit documented, but it's in the hundreds, or more likely thousands. There is, I believe, a page limit of 9999 pages per document, but I don't know if that includes the masters or if they are counted separately.
You can choose a page range in the Pages panel, then assign a master to them manually, and I beleive there are some scripts floating around that can assign a master page based on the appearance of a paragraph style (for chapter start pages, for example).

  • Sync LR Catalog between 2 computers but not master files

I have LR5 on my main iMac desktop system and on my Macbook Air.
The iMac is connected to a disk array which stores my master photo files.
I would like to sync this catalog (iMac master) with the Macbook Air and only be looking at previews on the Air,
so that I can choose selects on the road.
I would come back to the iMac to work with the master files.
Is this possible and easy? I'm not interested in having my files live in a cloud or cloud based sharing or anything like that.
Just Catalog with previews on the Air which sync to Catalog on the iMac.
    Thank you,
    Greg

    1. LR will create the preview and smart preview files alongside your catalog. I think you can change that in setting somewhere, but I believe Adobe says not to. So in my DropBox folder for Lightroom, I have my catalog (.lrcat), Previews.lrdata and Smart Previews.lrdata. But LR manages all that for me, and DropBox does all the synchronizing.
    2. From your computer's perspective, the DropBox folder is just another folder. The synchrozing all happens over the magic of the internet, but once everything is updated, its just local files on your local computer, so the speed and such depends on what drive you put it on.
Re: fast switching. Those previews and catalog files, at least on the Mac, are actually bundles of stuff. So when you make changes in Lightroom, dropbox has to process all that and send the updates back to the cloud. It can take a few minutes for a few changes, or if you import a huge catalog of stuff, that synchronizing can take more time. My point on that was just to make sure that DropBox had finished sending the changes to the cloud from your one computer and that DropBox has updated the changes on your second computer before you open up LR on the second computer and try to make changes. You'll wind up with "conflict" files on DropBox. It's not the end of the world, just a pain, so just make sure DropBox has done it's job before you try to make double edits on the same catalog on two different computers.
That said, if you let DropBox do it's think, you can (and I have) completely processed (keyword, select, and post process/develop) projects entirely using smart previews on my laptop, then just gone back to my desktop to export. The beauty of smart previews is that you can do all of that without having access to the original image files, which for me are only located on my desktop. It's magic.
    3. I'd leave the catalog where it is and either make a new copy of it, or export your stuff to a new catalog in a drop box folder. Worst-case scenario, your existing catalog is still intact. Backups are always your friend. Also, just be aware of the siz of your catalog. I have a working catalog on DropBox for active or recently active projects. That keeps the total file size down because you don't get a ton of space with the free account. Once I'm done with a project, I can export it to a static catalog on my desktop and network drive for archiving. Google Drive gives you more space but I personally don't need to carry my entire catalog around, but something to think about.
Again, LR doesn't know you are using DropBox. It's just a folder locally on your computer.
    Hope that helps!

  • Looking for some help with an error message when exporting master file. I'm stuck and would even pay to get this sorted out!

Hey guys, I'm really in a bind here and need some urgent help tonite. I would even be willing to pay for some actual help and not some vague information that i may not be able to understand if we could do something via skype or some other way that would be much quicker than a message board. Of course I have to have the project done by tomorow . so I'm new to fcpx, but have succesfully exported 2 other projects. I've also ran into this predicament before (error message not allowing me complete export) and have been able to solve that by converting the files i imported off my camera (canon g20) to a different file type (prores).
so where I'm at now: i have a 13 min short, all shot on my canon g20, imported and converted to prores422 with the brorsoft video converter with all the shots in a single event in fcpx. i'm using fcpx version 10.0.08. I have one main video track in my timeline that is completely full of very fast edits. (all quick 2-5 second clips, sped up shots in 2x, 4x, or 8x, tons of transitions, titles, and a little fx. theres 2 audio tracks, one is narration/speech and the other is an ongoing music track that constantly ducks everytime the subject speaks (tons of ducks/edits). Have you seen mtv cribs? Well i filmed an EXACT replica. So If you've seen one of those episodes, its literally the same exact same thing. I have all of my work completed, everything has been fully rendered, and i have it exactly as I want it.
I'm including all this information in case it may help. my successful projects ive exported in the past were rather simple, and this one is very complex and full of edits. here is what it looks like in the timeline:
Ive tried exporting the master file using almost all the different ways with no luck. My primary objective is to get it on youtube by any means by tommorow for a showing to a potential buyer (long story) and so I've been told using the h.264 is the best format for that. This, along with the other methods give me the same error message:
It think it gives this error message when i reach 24% everytime during export.
So first of all, what is that error message? Do i need to be concerned about the specifics of it, or is there something major that I'm missing? Like i said, i dont care how, but I need to get this video up on youtube tonite for an important viewing tomorrow. Conceptually, I think if i can figure this one out I shouldnt have any more trouble in the future doing something so basic, yet critical, such as exporting my 40+ hours of work for someone to see.
anyway, I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge with this software, and for my extremely long winded question which will probably have the opposite effect for me as most wont want to take the time to read all this, BUT i figured if i was as thorough as possible it might help actually getting a concrete answer, instead of a "read the manual, exporting is on page 37." or "use the share button on the right of the timeline then just click export master file and it will work everytime."
Cheers everybody, and thank you. Like i said if someone is up, and willing to talk via skype, phone, messanger or any other method that works for you I would be totally down and will compensate you generously for your time. thanks again.
    Taphabit

boom! that advice was correct and worked. i was able to export the full project as a quicktime movie and it can be uploaded to youtube.
NOTE, theres is definately quite a few noticeable audio glitches/lags/pops that werent there before doing this. I believe, and will test to make sure, that having a project such as this one needs to render before exporting. I'm not sure if the advice requires the project to be unrendered before exporting for a specific reason, because if it will export fine after rendering the project that's the way to go. like i said the edited version i have in my timeline plays back perfectly but this exported version has quite a few noticeable audio glitches (a few video glitches too). I'm going to retry doing the first few steps of your advice, but then at the end render, then export and compare the results...
OK, so this leads to a big question, Is this something that is standard for everyone when trying to export? If its not, what causes this error?
is there any way of preemptively avoiding it in future projects?
thanks again, and hopefully this information will help others as exporting seem to be one of the biggest problems in fcpx. any word on a new patch or firmware update?
