Master Form Defaults

Question

I am struggling with defaults on a Master/Detail form. Numerous columns on the Header table are foreign keys to other tables. I am attempting to populate these columns from items such as LOV and/or SQL.
When I click on the Create button to write the Header row I am receiving messages that the item value is NULL or that I have violated a table constraint on one of foreign keys yet the session state items values have the necessary data in them.
Is there subsequent code that I have to write to populate header form data in this fashion?

Scott,
The application I am currently working on is a budget entry system. Budget have Phases, Phases have Versions (only one is active) and Budget/Versions have Budget Headers.
I am attempting to allow the entry of a Budget Header row and Budget Detail rows via the Master/Detail form. If I take the form as is, I can enter the Version number (VERSION_SEQ) and the form will use that value entered as the Foreign Key to the Budget Header table. When I attempt and am have no luck with is defaulting the current active Version number.
So instead of using the wizard default Spource Type for VERSION_SEQ as DB Column, I have substituted my SQL code as Source Type SQL Query. I can the same value on the form as if I had typed it yet APEX sees it as NULL.
It's my guess that I am fighting against the inner workings of the form and am looking for direction on how I can default that value and not depend on the user to know which version is currently active which in most cases they will not know or care about.
