Master Project
Hi,
1. How many sub projects(recommended) can we have in a Master Project?
2. How many tasks(maximum number of tasks) can we have in a project?
K.Gokulraj
Hi, See this reference, after 35 sub projects with Project 2007, the performance is impacts. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197693%28v=office.12%29.aspx Then see this article for reference about typical data set: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/fp161198.aspx

Project Server 2010 - Error 20010 with a master project and 3 sub-projects during publication
Hi,
Here is the situation :
One master project with three sub projects.
Sub projects are really similar (Same ressources and nearly same tasks but only the first contain real work for now).
Sub projects got no sub projects nor links between projects.
The owner of the master project got read rights through projects permissions on sub projects.
Sub projects are link in "read only".
We applied Project Server 2010 SP2 last week end and the issue appeared monday.
Here are the symptoms :
When we link only one sub project (Doesn't matter which one), the owner can publish, no problems.
With 2 sub projects, the error may occur.
With 3 sub projects, the error always occurs.
With admin rights, the error doesn't occur.
Here is the error :
ID : 20010 (0x4E2A)
Description : You don't have required permissions to perform the action (Average traduction)
Detail : <detail><errinfo><general><class name="Project"><error id="20010" name="GeneralSecurityAccessDenied" uid="19515c1d-2624-466f-953a-b7fc67337b81"/></class></general></errinfo></detail>
I'm unable to determine which sub project is the culprit, if there is one, as it's working when I link only one of them.
Thanks for your time !Fylim --
If the project manager in question does not need to edit any of the three projects, the PM does not need to have Read/Write access to any of the three projects. Because you said that the PM needs to set links in all three projects, this means that
the PM will be editing all three projects. In order to edit the three projects, the PM must have Read/Write access to all three. Setting cross-project links constitutes editing of the projects, which is why the PM must have Read/Write permission.
Make sense?
Regarding SP2, I am not aware that this would change anything, but I could be wrong. The reality is that regardless of which SP you have applied to Microsoft Project and Project Server 2010, the PM in this situation MUST have Read/Write access to the
projects that he/she needs to edit with cross-project links. Hope this helps.

How to add a project into master project by Powershell
How to add a master project and sub-projects powershell
I use project server 2013, I want inserting multiple sub-project plans into a project masterHello,
You can't do this directly in PowerShell using the PSI etc. as the PSI can't create master projects / insert subprojects. You could however do this in VBA if required or automate Project using PowerShell COM object.

A couple different questions /similar scenarios
1) Is it possible with Project Server 2010 to have several sites (http://server/pwa1 and
http://server/pwa2 for example) communicate and build a Master Project at a third (or X) site (http://server/pwa3)
2) Is it possible with Project Server 2010 to have several sites (http://server/pwa1 and
http://server/pwa2 for example) communicate and build a Master Project at one of the original sites (http://server/pwa1 (for example))
OR is there a better way to do this/more preferred way to do this.
We found this (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/projectserver/en-US/2379c3f2-6c80-46d7-8eac-3bc2ccb2d908/master-projectsubproject-with-sites-in-pwa-2010?forum=projectserver2010general)
but its not what we're looking for
3a) Issue/Example -
We want to set up a site (http://server/pwa100) for just the president of the company - all the schedules of the subsites (/pwa99 + /pwa98) create a feed into an integrated master schedule/master project with subprojects(located
in /pwa100).
3b-1) We also want to set up sub sites (http://server/pwa99 and
http://server/pwa98) for each division VPs (and specific other people). These two sites would only allow specific user's project files to be viewed by each other...
Can their project files have linkages between the two project sites (/pwa99 and /pwa98)? Meaning if user1 logs in to /pwa99 can he see a project file (given that they have permission) from /pwa98 in the same instance?
3b-2) Can they see the project file in ProjPro and/or PWA ???
3c) is it possible to have:
+ /pwa100 (pres)
++/pwa99 & /pwa98 (two vps)
+++/pwa97 & /pwa96 & /pwa95 & /pwa-etc (minions)
each rolling up to the next level (level 3 rolls up to level 2 which can roll up to level 1)kbwrecker,
I agree with Dale. Having multiple sites will make this difficult to set up.
Not knowing how your Custom Groups/Categories have been set up, have you looked into using the "Project Permissions" feature to share projects. These permissions are 'additive' to the category permissions, so you could start out with people looking at the
projects they are authorized to via categories, and then let them share/add people as needed basis. This will also satisfy the requirement of not-loading the projects with resources..
And finally, the department and categories need not align, except that when projects from one dept are shared t another dept resource, the visibility of custom fieds will be affected.
Hope I did not go off on a tangent there :)

Meant to get back to this earlier - your answer is close (because its what we currently do..sort-of)
From my understanding of this issue the users are separated by department and can only see specific projects; however, when they try to share departments between users (so they can see their projects (dept a sees dept b projects)) this works - but there
is a bigger issue/main issue.
main issue: when dept B adds a new project dept. A cannot see the new project in dept B.
This can be eliviated by removing the user/s and re-adding them to the permission structure of the deptment but overall doing this several times based on user/s and projects being added it gets to be cumbersome and just plain annoying.
Any help/additional thoughts would be great -
Is there any way to prevent the child indexes from merging in the master project?
I have created a master project using Robohelp 8 and currently have 2 child projects, but this is going to expand.
I would like the indexes to be assigned to the child projects only, rather than sharing one index across all of them. Is this possible?I once jerry-rigged a project by linking a book to the start file of a child project within the merged project folder. That way only the child project launched when you clicked the link. However, since that project was also merged, the child topics also displayed in that folder. It was the only way I could think of to have it both ways, with merged and un-merged projects all in one. This was back in RH6 days. They may have come up with a way to isolate searches and indexes since, but I haven't needed to look for it.
If not, and you're just trying to narrow the search, this might work for you. However, the child index is still going to merge with the parent in the larger project. -
Hi, I need to make a validation on Master Project, is it possible to do that?
I have 1 UDF here, and every project has this 1 UDF and I'm about to make a validation that each project will only have 1 UDF.
I tried this :
SELECT U_ProjectDetail, PrjCode
FROM OPRJ
WHERE U_ProjectDetail IN (SELECT U_ProjectDetail FROM OPRJ)
AND PrjCode = @list_of_cols_val_tab_del
AND @object_type = '63'
But seems not the right way to validate this condition.
Anyone can help?
Thank you,
-FloHi Rahul,
I need to check so there will be no double U_ProjectDetail
I tried :
SELECT *
FROM
SELECT T0.PrjCode, T0.U_ProjectDetail
FROM OPRJ T0
WHERE T0.PrjCode = @list_of_cols_val_tab_del
)T0
INNER JOIN
SELECT PrjCode, U_ProjectDetail
FROM OPRJ
)T1 ON 1=1
WHERE T0.U_ProjectDetail=T1.U_ProjectDetail
but failed
Thanks,

How to make a master project in ROBOHELP HTML 8
Hello,
With the word version I just just put the winhelp files in the same directory as the master file and everything would go well, I have also done the same thing with .chm files. How do I create a master project with thw webhelp pro layout, I have 7 different projects that I want to include in the master project. Do I have to copy all file into one directory?
ehsanYou are not the first to be confused and I wish Adobe would give this output a new name precisely because people do assume it must be a better version. It does offer additional features but you have to have the extra cost RoboHelp Server installed on the server. Without that, it does not fly.
This topic explains the differences.
http://www.robowizard.com/RoboWizard/NewProject.htm#MonthlyScry/082005.htm
See also the RoboHelp Reviewers Guide. https://share.acrobat.com/adc/adc.do?docid=e5b134d2-67a7-44dd-b89f-c4f349e97423
If you want those features, then you need to buy RoboHelp Server 8 as well as RH. Otherwise, use WebHelp and follow the instructions on my site.
Are your developers aware you are changing things? If not, their calls to the help will not work and they might get a bit grumpy.

Master Project Plan is not updatineg
I'm running in a situation where I have a master plan with sub-projects, the master plan will not show the updated sub-project plans in the web app until you open the master project in project professional and expand the sub-project summary task every time
it get an update, then you have to publish the master plan, then the master project will show the date changes in the web app.
Is there a way to make the updates on sub projects show up on the master project immediately without going through all that?Sgasgous --
It appears so. I have not extensively used master projects in Project Server 2013, so I will gladly invite the others in this forum to correct me if my answer to you is wrong. For me personally, I have never expected the behavior you expect from
PWA. My habit is always to open the master project in Microsoft Project after updates are applied, expand all of the subprojects, and begin doing variance analysis. The process of applying updates will inevitably cause variances, which need to
be known and addressed. After doing that, only then would I save and publish the latest schedule changes. In fact, I would recommend this approach as a best practice for you as well! Hope this helps.

Creating Master Project - Child Projects Hierarchy in Project Costing
Hello,
Is it possible to create a Master Project (for example, for a division) and one or many Child projects for that divisions as the projects get rolled out?
A division is given a budget which can be assigned to the Master Project and as the divisional Projects are rolled out with a specific budgeted $s, the Master Budget would be reduced with a new version, so the total budget amount at Master Project Level remains the same.
Just like each sub-task roll up to a Top task and top-task make up the total Project, is it possible to create hierarchical Master-child project relationship with up roll up capability.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Note: The client @ 11.5.10 does not have License to use Project Contracts, and uses only the Project Costing module.
Regards.Hey, those ain't "newbie" questions. The first one gets posted to the Forum Comments forum weekly. The second one, well I should have posted my normal detail, but got lazy - mea culpa, mea culpa.
1.) This ARTICLE should step you through the processes with the e-mails. If you have any questions, let us know. There are several places, where e-mail notification can be turned ON and OFF. Some are global, and some are specific to threads.*
2.) Ah, the ImgBurn site. The top 2/3 are all ads. Hey, it's great free software, so who can blame 'em? Scroll down to where the page has the various versions and what they addressed. There is a Download button there (well below those ads). That is what you want. Normally, I mention the scrolling way down page, but you caught me here.
Good luck,

* Going back a few months, while trying to help another user on the Forum Comments forum, I got hit with a global change in my e-mail settings. I got about 1,000/day, for every forum that I participate in - think 1,000 x PS, PrPRo, Encore, InDesign, Illustrator, Audition, PrE and all of their sub-fora! Fortunately, it only took about 3 days for Adobe to get that fixed. -
Hi,
I have a master project, in that I have added some 25 resources.
When I try to add those resources in Resource Names field in MS Project, that field is empty(I do not see any resources).
Why is it so?
K.GokulrajHi,
Are you using Project Server with an Enterprise resource pool? Or a shared resource file?
The resources must be created in one of the sub-projects, meaning that if you create a task in another sub-project or even if the master plan directly, you might not see it. In the resource sheet, insert the "project" column to see which project
has which resources.
Hope this helps,

Master Project / Resource Pool
We currently have a master project schedule that shows all our current on going projects in one schedule but unfortantely when we try to run a Visual Report for Resource Usage, it is taking some people and multiply their hours.
So say "Dave" was scheduled for 100 hours total across all projects, when we run the report it is now making him show that he is scheduled for 300 hours.
We have a resource pool and all our PM's pull from this.
Can you please help us in trying to figure out why, this report is not working correctly.
Thanks :)If you have a master project with links to many projects plus a resource pool, then you have a fragile system based on old DDE technology(DDE does teh auto update between files). If any of these files are ona wide arear network where network quality is less
than 99.99% then file corruption is likely. If any user moves, overwrites or renames any of the linked files the file corruption die are thrown.
So, my first suspect is a file corruption. To fix break all the links then re-create master and pool (with new blank projects). Ideally use master files where projects are inserted with no link. This consolidates resources as well. I use a recorded macro
to re-create a master when needed.
If you have Project 2007 it is ESSENTIAL that you apply SP3 and the latest cumulative update. Project 2007 without Service Packs is very bug ridden.

Visual report error on master project
Hi,
I've created 2 distinct projects with custom fields, filled-in with a macro based on resource pool custom fields. Works fine.
For these projects, I've created an Excel visual reports that uses the custom fields (as dropdown lists). Also OK on both projects.
When I just insert both projects as sub-projects of a master projects (with same custom fields imported in the master project), I receive an "unknown error" when running the visual report. Any hint ?
ThanksThanks a lot Don for your valuable suggestions.
We have already taken care of the points which you mentioned in your reply on development side. Also, we have downloaded crystal report from the link which you posted but on DEPLOYMENT side we are unable to run reports from our application.
It gives the notification when we try to install crystal report on a target machine as "You must have visual studio 2010 installed in order to install the crystal report".
The DEPLOYMENT problem we are facing is in RUNTIME environment on TARGET machine. Our TRAGET machine has properly installed Win 7 Professional 64 bit, .NET Framework Ver 4 and CRforVS_redist_install_64bit_13_0_1 . We also have properly installed application on this machine. We got no errors while installing any of the above. The problem starts when we fire a report on target machine from the application.
We get the error as "The type initializer for 'CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument' threw an exception"
So, we are looking for an appropriate RUN TIME version of Crystal Report which can be installed on the target machine to fire reports (where visual studio 2010 is not installed).
Please help suggest an exact version to download for target machine and the steps if it has a specific procedure.
Thank you!

How to update a master project in Project Online via CSOM or REST?
I can update "regular" projects via the CSOM, but what about Master projects?
1. ProjectContext.Projects does not seem to include master projects. This also seems to mean that the following code works if ProjectId is a non-master. If ProjectId is for a master project, then ExecuteQuery returns nothing.
var Projects = projContext.LoadQuery(projContext.Projects.Where(p => p.Id == ProjectId));
projContext.ExecuteQuery();
2. I can get master projects via a REST call. But then, how do you update them? The documentation suggests that it is possible to do CRUD operations via REST, but I can't find any documentation that explains how to actually do that.
Or, I am just missing something? It would seem that not having access at all to Master Projects would be a blocking issue for most?
Mike G.Hi Mike,
This one perked my interest and yes I can confirm the same, Master Projects (ProjectType = 6) DO NOT appear in the CSOM at all, and while they do show up in the OData feed they are actually also not visible as far as I can see in the REST or any other client
side endpoint!
This interested me (affects my bulk edit for one) so I just did a bit of .NET Reflecting and I can see that in the ProjectCollection constructor in the back end (with SP1 installed) it is specifically loading
only projects of type 0 and 5! Tsk, tsk.

ProjContext.Projects does not include master projects
How do you get a list of all Projects, including master projects, from Project Online using the CSOM?
I've tried the following code (copied from the docs), but it does not retrieve master projects:
// List the published projects.
private static void ListPublishedProjects()
// Get the list of projects on the server.
projContext.Load(projContext.Projects);
projContext.ExecuteQuery();
Console.WriteLine("\nProject ID : Project name : Created date");
foreach (PublishedProject pubProj in projContext.Projects)
Console.WriteLine("\n\t{0} :\n\t{1} : {2}", pubProj.Id.ToString(), pubProj.Name,
pubProj.CreatedDate.ToString());
Mike G.The trial version is Photoshop Extended. The Extended features remain or go away the instant you input a valid, final serial number. You get what you pay for.

Milestone tracking in Master project plan
Hi,
I have 6 projects(project 2010) and also need to have one master project. The master project should contain milestones of each of the 6 subprojects so that the director could view status of milestones only.
Could you please suggest how should i go about this or pass references please to any sites
I dont use EPM server but only standalone project professional 2010
Thanks
mpHi, I would suggest to use the "marked" column to flag the milestones to track in each projects. Then in the master plan, just create a filter to display only marked milestones. Note that if you need to show all milestones in the master plan, you can simply
use the out of the box "milestone" flag.
Hope this helps,

Hi
We have a master project which has 5 sub projects in our PS 2013 environment. The milestones in the sub projects have dependency across projects with in the Master project.
Would like to know, if we update a milestone in one of the sub projects, would it automatically update the other milestone in another project (which has dependency)..?
Please suggest.When you open the sub-project, you can see the corresponding linked tasks in grey color. As soon as you modify, can see the changes in the respective linked tasks.
Later when you open the other sub project, you will get a prompt like "Links between Projects 'project name'"
choose the task and accept the changes, later click on close.
Then you can see the changes reflected in the respective tasks.
Not mandatory to open the master project and expand.
Cheers. Happy troubleshooting !!! Sriram E - MSFT Enterprise Project Management
