Maverick 10.9.5 creating havoc!

Since I installed this update last week I have had no end of problems..
first was the keycode problem at first it was just when i tried to use mail, but then it seemed anything i tried to do wanted a key code password.. after reading on here a number of offered solutions i tried them all... over 2 days with no success. In one last attempt i sync'd my iPad with my mac shut it down and went to bed in the early hours !! so i am not sure if it was the sync that sorted it or not, but fingers crossed that i won't get that error message again.
Now i am having problems backing up, i use a 1tb toshiba basic to back up using the time machine feature, it will back up for a couple of days and then i get the unable to back up message..
so i verify the disk... 'incorrect number of extended attributes' is the first message i get (It should be 830895 instead of 830893)

i can then enter 'time machine and back up.
my question is am i going to have to do this every few days just to get a back up done?
is there something else i can do prevent this happening again?

I wasn't really convinced that it was the drive as it was relatively new .. 6 months old.. but it is really meant as a portable drive and not really for this type of continual back up... which i had not considered when i was given it!
So I bow to your knowledge and went out and purchased a seagate backup plus drive, which was the best I could afford at the moment.
It seems to be working fine...
my next question is how do I transfer my previous time machine backup files onto this new drive?
As now they are spread over 3 drives... one full seagate that I have had for about 7 years and I used for file storage and back ups.. the toshiba that is not working properly and the new seagate.
If I try to copy and paste or drag and drop the folders, or go to edit , copy, paste item i get a message that says 'The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup.. do i need to change the file name? ( the folders are named with the date followed by a 6 digit code)

As a first step, open Disk Utility > select your hard drive > repair disk permissions.

In my macbook pro retina 15 inch there is installed mavericks but ı want to create recovery disk and ı need to download mavericks from App Store but it doesn't download??

One way around tis is to borrow a Mac that can run Mavericks and then the download will work. You can use these instructions:

Maverick upgrade: Can't create recovery partition and infinite loop

Hi,
I'm using MacBook Air Mid 2011 with 256 GB SSD (~30 GB free disk space) running MacOS 10.7.4. So far I never followed the suggestion to upgrade to MacOS Maverick but yesterday I thought, OK, let's do it.
After the first reboot the setup started working, but after about 5 minutes it quit with the error message, it can't create the recovery partition and said, after a reboot, I would be sent back to my old MacOS.
However, it booted again into the setup, worked a few minutes, quite with the error message and said, I have to reboot. I tried this a few times but didn't find a way to cancel the setup, but boot into my existing MacOS installation.
I found no other solution than to make a full restore with TimeMachine.
I'm now wondering what the problem was. One point may be that I use FileVault for hard disk encryption and it never asked me for my hard disk password. This is in particular remarkable because TimeMachine didn't show me my internal hard disk as a restore target until I went to the disk utility and used Unlock on my hard disk where I had to enter my password. So maybe this is related?
I know I could run the upgrade without creating a recovery partition but now I'm concerned that other problems could occur if I don't identify the root cause.

You can try making a Recovery Volume using the 2nd link if you still have the installer.

Does anyone know what command-esc does in mavericks? Trying to create service that uses that shortcut but can't.

Created the service, tried to set command-esc as the shortcut but mavericks won't let me. I don't see anything else that uses it. command-option-esc is force quit, I know that. command-esc used to be to launch front row years ago. As far as I can tell it does nothing in mavericks yet I can't set it as a shortcut? *sigh* Anyone? Thanks.

One website creates havoc with my iMac - what can be done?

I am an administrator for our church website. When I go on it to work, after about 10 minutes either Safari or Firefox, whichever I'm using, freezes completely. I have to force quit and restart about every 10 minutes. In fact it isn't only that it freezes, the website plays havoc with my computer. I took two days to dump preferences, use disk utility, get mail back on line and it was working perfectly. Last night I went on the website, and instantly, the computer froze and I lost not only what I'd just posted but an entire page of other information!
I've done enough testing now to know this only happens on that website. First of all, is this even possible that a website can do such damage? I'm on websites all day and have never had anything like this. I post on chatboards with no difficulty; no problem with Facebook. If it is possible, then is there something I can do to fix this? I love working on the website but I can't continue this way. I wondered if this is a frequent enough problem that someone might know a setting or some other adjustment that needs to be made to my Mac to make it work.
I don't know if this is related to 10.6 or not because I have only done the website since I installed Snow Leopard. I have written the company who owns the site to see if they know of anything, but this is really mystifying. It is stunning what 5 minutes on the website will do to my computer! It is almost completely inoperable until I dump some preferences and do other things.

One other thing I've noticed is that the problem worsens over time. When I first go on, it is okay...then in 10 minutes it is starting to act very strangely, and at 15 minutes, the whole thing is frozen. Then I dump the Safari preference files and restart and it works wonderfully....for 10 minutes.
Then the fireworks start. Today, weird pages were flashing up that I've never seen before....like the introductory page to Safari..."Welcome to Safari 4.1" I've never seen that page in my life. It's more than just freezing, it goes crazy. Because it starts to work again when I dump the prefs, It seems like something is corrupting them. To have to dump them every 15 minutes is really strange.

I installed the new version of Itunes and it created havoc

Yesterday I installed the new version of ITunes. This am I lost all of my audio. I did a system restore (on a PC using Windows) and it got rid of ITunes. I had to get a remote tech. from DELL to reinstall the audio, which is ok now. I uninstalled all versions of ITunes and re installed the older version but now I can not get the ITunes library into the newly installed older version. It tells me it dosn't recognize the program that created it. It does have both the older and new files I think. I don't want to have to reinstall all of my CD's. Can anyone Help. I hope so.

Oh ok...try using a third party program such as YamiPod or CopyPod, both free and will let you rip your iPod onto your iTunes.

Install maverick fresh, will it create a recovery partition?

Basic info.
I have a i5 MBP that came originally with 10.6.x.
Presnt Recovery Partition is 10.6.x.
the internal HD is partitioned in to 3 partitions, one of them is the Mac OS the other two different things. Not to have the 3 partitions is not an option for internal reasons.
I have real problems with the OS and after trying lots of fixes decided it is time to install new.
I want to install Maverick (from a USB stick I made) fresh rather than install over the present 10.8.x.
If I look at the partitions I see the following (debug is on to show invisibles)
Now, if I erase the OS A disk as well as the invisible Recovery HD, expand the partition so OS A now includes the Recovery HD and install Maverick on the empty partiton. The question is, will it install a Maverick Recovery HD partition?
Reason is that I would like to have a Maverick Recovery Partition is, I assume for the obvious reasons, of being up to date.
Any wisdom, tips etc appreciated.

Yes to your 1st question as long as you are OUTSIDE of the drive you're erasing. If you're IN the drive's Recovery HD using Disk Utility, you're ONLY erasing OS A (in your example) and NOT its Recovery HD also.
Yes to your 2nd question. What I use is Disk Utility from the Recovery HD and do a Restore. This will clone both the OS A AND the Recovery HD to an external drive using OS A as the Source and ExternalDrive as the Destination. Now, if I ever want to Restore from that external drive to the internal without reinstalling, I just boot into the external's Recovery HD and do the Disk Utility Restore (ExternalDrive as Source and OS A as Destination). If your ChronoSync will clone both, then you're good to go.

Maverick download seems to create slowdown

why did my mac slow to DSL speed after downloading Maverick? I got a warning tht Maverick didn't support Microsoft Word and other Microsoft Office programs that I have been using for years so I didn't install. I moved the installer and Maverick tothe trash an emptied it. How do get speed back?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Upgrade to latest Itunes created havoc with my library!

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I upgraded to latest Itunes and about 800 of my songs lost their association from the computer to the library and the songs wouldn't play. With more investigation, many are purchases saved on the cloud or CDs I imported but they must be stored on the cloud because there are no files on my computer so I had to reload a ton of music. Also had to delete purchased songs from my library to allow me to re-download them, another time consuming activity that I didn't plan to spend my time on today. Wondering if others are also having this problem and how to communicate it to Apple so they are aware? Happy holidays.

Switch to iCloud/Win7 is creating havoc

OK, so, Apple sez "no more Mobile Me". Which works great. Permits me to interface my calendar, contacts, email, etc. with my secretary. Seamless. But come June, no more Mobile Me. which means that I have to buy a new computer(s). Which, frankly, isn't the problem. The real problem is that all of my work programs on my secretary's computer, which is running Windows XP and which works great, will start to tumble down like snowflakes when I have to transition to Windows 7. My billing program. My client-contact programs. My (admittedly old but great) WP12. I DON'T WANT TO GO THROUGH THIS TRANSITION!!! It worked great. Can't we please have some form of Mobile Me? I'm willing to pay for it.

Thanks, Roger...but that brings up another problem. If I don't have another email address, what are my options? Also, if I were new to Apple and just now getting my first Apple ID, it would probably force me to actually use my new iCloud email address as my Apple ID.
So, assuming the use of my iCloud email address is not possible, what happens when I don't have that email address any longer that is currently my Apple ID? In "Manage my Apple ID" it clearly shows:

...but that wouldn't be my primary email address any longer...in fact it wouldn't be my email address at all. Something isn't computing here. So what happens when my primary Apple ID then would no longer fit the criteria of "be a valid email address"?
I know I can login to Apple sites using my alternate Apple ID, which is my old .me address, but that still doesn't explain what I'm going to do when I kill the email address that is my current Apple ID...Apple says that address must be valid, but they can't stop me from killing the address and making it invalid. So what would I do then? Something has to give here.

Adobe Updater creates havoc

but it appears that the problem is not solved, or else Adobe is now preventing the proposed fix.
The main problem is that Adobe Updater is an incredible resource hog. I have just observed it using 1.6 GB of REAL memory, over 3 GB of virtual memory. My 2GB iMac becomes unresponsive for minutes at a time.
How to turn off AU without disabling Adobe Reader?
Matt Broughton suggested using a chmod -x Terminal command to prevent the updater from launching. When I do that and launch Adobe Reader, I get "Adobe Reader could not install correctly. A required component could not be found. Please reinstall Adobe Reader" and AR quits.
If I reinstall Adobe Reader, it works again. If I do the chmod, it stops again.
Is Adobe playing games with us? They don't provide any preference to disable the updater. Are they requiring this resource hog to be executed as a price of using Adobe Reader?

I'm with dechamp: haven't installed Adobe Reader and don't intend to, ever. I use Preview.
If you launch Reader, then launch Activity Monitor, can you find the the Adobe Updater and quit it from from Activity Monitor? Does Reader continue to work? My thinking is that once it is started and runs thru its startup routine, it would be happy even if AFTER it started Updater is quit.

Deleting slide from software sim creates havoc!

Help! When deleting slides from software sim using CP6, I get random slides of chaos.
The icons are from the first slide. This is slide 20. This doesn't show until I preview or export the project.

Why individually? If you want to make a difference between slides that need the higher quality and others, OK, but if you want to change all at once:
Activate Filmstrip, use CTRL-A to select all sikdes
In Properties panel change quality to Optimized
Another way, but only possible to High (not Optimized, which is a better choice): on publishing override the Slide Quality in Preferences, Project, SWF size and Quality.

You cannot use DVD, capacity is not enough.
Click blue "Reader" button at the end of URL/Address bar of Safari for easy viewing.

How to print from Mavericks to an old Xerox M24 Workcentre?

Dear All,
We have a Xerox Workcentre M24 printer-fax-scanner at our office.
Unfortunately Xerox stopped supporting this printer for Mac OS X from version 10.3 when they still provided a beta driver. This is particularly unfortunate since we are still under contract with Xerox - so we must keep the equipment even if they do not provide updated drivers for it :-(
Although Xerox states that the M24 is not compatible with recent Mac OS X I myself am so far perfectly able to print from my computer running Mavericks. I suppose this happens because I already had the drivers installed and working back in Leopard and then upgraded to Snow Leopard, Mountain Lioin and finally to Mavericks allways keeping the abillity to print to it.
Why am I bothering you since I can print? Because no one else at my office can! Newer Macs and even older that did not previously installed the drivers cannot print since there are no driver installers at all.
Xerox does provide a Global printer driver with limited functionallities but not for Mac, only Windows! :-(
Apple does provide a Mavericks printer drivers package but the Xerox M24 is not included.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Left without options so far I was wondering if it would be accpetable to copy one or more printer/system folders from my computer and bluntly paste them onto my colleagues Macs. If you think this won't create havoc on their system, and that it actually might work can you help me directing me to which folder(s) to copy?

You aren't without options!
I don't recommend copying files.
From the specs from Xerox:
PDLs: PCL6 and PCL5e emulations, optional Adobe® PostScript® 3™
So, first question is do you have the postscript option installed?
If not, no problem - this printer emulates an HP laserjet with the Page Description Language "PCL."
You should try this:
1) in Print & Scan prefs click " + " (add), and select IP printer > HP Jetdirect/socket protocol.
2) Enter the printer's IP address.
3) For driver, select "Generic PCL"
Now, this will only print black & white, but is a good test to see if it works with your Mac.
Report your success.
