Mavericks and kerberized NFS and Apple Native Apps

"Sandbox creation failed: AppSandboxUtilRealPathForPath(self.userAccountHomeDirectoryPath) failed: The operation couldn’t be completed. Permission denied"
We have a kerberized NFS environment that automounts an NFS mount which stores user home directories. Under 10.9.1 all worked fine, however when we upgraded to 10.9.2 and beyond we can no longer successfully launch any Apple Native apps such as Preview, Maps, etc. The apps quit unexpectly producing the error listed above. A search of the internet for this particular error message yields only a single result and the circumstances are completely dissimilar as the other issue occurs on non-Apple hardware.

Anyone with any insight or seeing similar results that has any good solutions or ideas are welcomed.

Switch to AFP?
Ask in the Mac OS X Server section?
Ask on Spiceworks Community?
In the 10.5 and 10.6 days, NFS wouldn't do the resource forks correctly which broke the fonts.

  • Sync data between third-party contacts and calendar apps, and the native apps, in 10.9.3+?

I've had to refrain from updating my Mac Pro from 10.8.5 to 10.9 owing to the removal of SyncServices.  I then read that SyncServices was re-introduced on a limited basis in 10.9.3.
It seems unlikely, but I'd like to know whether or not SyncServices in 10.9.3 re-enables the syncing of data between third-party contacts & calendar apps and the native apps, and thereby enables syncing of contacts and calendar info between third-party apps and iOS devices over USB via iTunes.  This is the method I use exclusively by choice in 10.8.5, and I will not change it to a cloud-based solution under any circumstances.
If it is not possible, is there a third-party workaround?  My calendar app on the Mac Pro at the moment is BusyCal, syncing with Week Cal on the iPhone, but I'll happily buy a new combo of apps if it means I can upgrade to Mavericks and retain USB syncing.
EDIT: a solution which permits syncing of a third-party calendar app on the Mac Pro with a third-party calendar app on the iPhone over an ad-hoc wireless network would also be acceptable, I suppose.

Well, that's pretty disappointing.  I guess Apple believes Internet is free and everywhere.

  • Just downloaded Maverick and lost the apps I purchased - Notes and Bejeweled 3.  How do I get them back without repurchasing?

I just dowloaded Maverick and lost the Apps I purchased:  Notes and Bejeweled 3.  How do I get them back without paying for them again?

Thanks so much for being out there for me - someone I can talk to.  I went to purchases and unfortunately it is no longer there. I dowloaded the Notes App again for free.  I will just buy Bejeweled again.    I guess the price of downloading maverick was losing my beloved video game.  But you have put my mind at ease - I appreciate knowing I did all I could do to recover it.

  • I have downloaded Mavericks and yet the App store shows "download" under purchases.  Why? Do I keep downloading?

I have previously downloaded Mavericks and yet the App store shows "download"  I did and now I have done it twice.  Today i noticed that 4 apps were marked update and yet they have been updated earlier.    Why does it still say "download"

It will allow you to download again, but you do not have to do so.
If you Sign Out and then Sign In does it still show these status marks?  Do you get the update red badge on the App Store icon, or only in the Purchases area?

  • IOS 7.1 and APPLE Music APP

After the ios 7.1 update, when going into my Apple Music App and playing songs, when selecting a song the system does not play the song selected....it plays a song that is 3 or four titles ABOVE the selected song.  The location seems to change but what is constant is that when selecting a song the system DOES NOT play tha song that I select.  Anyone assistance and/or anyone else experiencing this issue?  Thank you!

    Hey DDKieffer,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your Music application. To troubleshoot these issues, let’s force the app to close, and then restart your device:

  • Facetime and Apple Watch apps disappeared from ios 8.2

    Dear all,
After update iPhone 4s to ios 8.2 my app Facetime disappeared. I tried to restart, restore, reload the software, insert other sim  and more than that in none of iPhone forums I didn't found info about this issue. My carrier support Facetime call. • IPad 1, iOS 5.1.1 and Apple Store app

Lauch the Apple store app, tells me to upgrade to latest iOS and app version.
    Takes me to App store.
Asks if I want to download older version for my iPad.
Click Yes, it downloads and starts all over again.
Anyone getting the Apple Store app to work on iPad 1?

    David Shanahan wrote:
Not at all this is just the march of progress. I have an iPad 1 too (and a bronze keyboard Powerbook and several other obsolete computers), but I don't use it anymore as I realise it's nothing but a museum piece nowadays. It says right there on the App Store page for the app that the current release  is only compatible with iOS 6 and above. So that rules out the iPad 1.
Except that I (and everyone else) can now download the previous version of apps that are compatible with their device (though It was already installed and didn't need to be redownloaded).
Apple really shouldn't allow you to download and install the new Apple Store app on an iPad 1,
They don't allow you to do it. They specifically tell you that you cannot and then allow you to download the latest compatible version.
This was a recent change by Apple.
The iPad 1 is now four generations of hardware (and two major software releases) behind the current systems, you can't expect app developers (including Apple) to keep supporting such old software and hardware
    Yes I can expect this.
Restore the connection to the store through the app that Apple allow sme to redownload.
(though the connection issue may be a "glitch"/bug and not intentionally disabled).

  • After I installed the OS X Mavericks and open certain apps my MacBook Pro will resstart

I will be playing a game and such and then my computer will freeze, it doesn't even have to be a app I could be when I am typing an essay anyway, it will have a gray screen and say something like "Your computer has restarted because of a problem please push a button or the computer will restart automatically." HELP because once it restarts a lot of time it will close out my programs. help

  • Mavericks and apple servers

I updated my iMac 2007 iMac7,1 to mavericks (fresh install, not update), all works fine...
Download new voices from dictate preferences (stay on 12% and after minutes receive an error), download of windows support from bootcamp (give an errror) and os x updates going in loop...
but all other things works fine.... and my Macbook Pro, works fine on the same network.. and same installation type.
what is the problem? i see the update wheel on AppStore for a long time, and i can't download windows drivers etc...
i tried safe mode, unistall some apps. nothing works.
    sorry for my bad english

i remember problems after install (download voices) without any app installed. i tried to change network, the same.

This particular issue is not one we normally see reported. Random connection issues are difficult to track down.
    Test your network connection.
Download and run:  Namebench (free) http://code.google.com/p/namebench/
Once you have the fastest domain name servers, you then have to manually change your DNS settings in System Preferences/Network/
Select different browsers under the popup. I got varying results when using different browsers. Surprisingly, Firefox suggest Google Public DNS as primary, but Chrome and Safari gave me same settings.
System Preferences > Network > Select you internet service (be it Airport, Ethernet etc) then click advanced tab > Select  DNS and enter the settings
Another option is to try turning off IPv6:
In System Preferences --> Network -> choose the Ethernet tab in the far left column --> Advanced button -> TCP/IP tab --> Configure IPv6: dropdown menu, choose Off --> Okay button.
The reason that turning IPv6 off may improve performance is that some DNS servers do not properly respond to IPv6 requests. As a result, your computer has to time out waiting for a response and then try a secondary DNS server.
In recent versions of OS X, IPv6 typically is set to "automatic" by default. You have nothing to lose by turning IPv6 to "off" and then seeing if performance improves.
    Hope this helps!

  • Passbook and Apple Pay app doesnt function

    Hi!
When I open the Passbook app, it defaults to a screen that just says to scan code or find apps for Passbook.
I am trying to set up Apple Pay but nowhere on it am I able to click the plus icon mentioned in the tutorials.

Check this support document for help with starting Apple Pay.  Set up and use Apple Pay on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
According to your profile, you are using iOS 6.1.4 and an iPhone 5s. If the phone is correct, the iOS is not. And, if you have an iPhone 5s, then you cannot use Apple Pay. It requires the hardware in an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus.

  • MobileME and Apple ID - App problem :(

Thanks for your help - this so not Apple-like

have her go to settings/itunes&app stores/turn automatic downloads off on her device.

  • Cox cable and Apple TV apps

How come I can't choose Cox cable when trying to activate Lifetime and History on my Apple TV?  They list so many providers, but do not list Cox.  When are they going to add Cox as a choice?  What is the delay in adding Cox?  In the past I could activate with a choice of Cox for other channels.  Is Apple aware that Cox is missing from the list of providers? It's like I pay for these channels but I cannot access them on Apple TV, annoyed.

This has nothing to do with Apple or the Apple TV. You would get the same list of providers if you were trying to do this with a Roku box for example.
It is up to the content providers (History channel, ESPN, NBC, etc) to make arrangements with the cable companies to allow this to happen. For whatever reason some companies just don;t play nice together.
The best you can do is let Cox and the content providers know you would like them to sort this out.
    regards

  • Exchange Server 2008 and Apple Mail App

My place of employment recently hired a 3rd party company to handle setting up and managing our servers. This includes our email, which is now run on Microsoft Exchange Server 2008.
I am the only user in the office that uses Macs, and we are having an impossible time of figuring out what could be wrong that Apple Mail is not letting us connect to the Exchange server to receive/send email. We can ping the Exchange server just fine from Terminal.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Anyone know of work-arounds? I'm using 10.4.11 at the moment. Mail is version 2.1.3.
I read all the other Exchange-related topics in here and none were able to help me.
    Thank you!
Message was edited by: JTelcontar (typo!)

Well that's bizarre, since I have the opposite problem. I can connect to the Exchange Server using Entourage 2004 no problem. However I do not use the Outlook http:// type access, I simply typed in the Exchange server address something like SEBNN-EX002. Then Entourage went off and established all the connections et voila.!
But there are issues however. Entourage could not connect to the address server, so I think that's an LLDP problem but I'm not too bothered about that. Also I think some of the Calender implementations have a few bugs. For example, you can't drag-and-drop a mail item onto the calender icon to create an event, you have to right-click and use the built-in scripts to do it. Also, inviting attendees to a meeting is a bit hit/miss.
I would actually like to use Apple Mail instead, but have never been able to configure it to run - it always gets the "cannot connect to exchange server" error. An y advice would be welcome.

  • Mavericks and Beachballs

I'd like to advise Apple of an issue. Is the Apple Support Communities the best method?
I have a 2011 circa MacBookPro 2.2 GHz intel i7, Radeon HD 6750M, 4GB RAM. It originally came with Mac)S 10.7 (I believe), after upgrading to MacOS 10.8 I saw a large increase in the number of spinning beach balls (SBB) so much that I was advised to upgrade to MacOS 10.9 Mavericks for better memory management. About 3 weeks ago I had reached a point where the MacOS was sluggish all of the time, in fact it took 15 minutes to start the computer and achieve a functional desktop. It seemed like I was greeted with a SBB of varying lengths for just about every task I selected. On Monday, 24 Feb, I contacted Apple and they advised me to reinstall Mavericks from scratch, that it was possible that the OS updates had left some baggage behind.
Sure enough this fixed the issue for 3 days. My MBP seemed to be back to its old self! However this morning I ran into another hard core spinning beach ball, 15 minutes later without being able to shutdown firefox or tell the MacOS to shutdown, or do anything, I finally pulled the plug and forced a restart. This stall was so horrific, maybe it would have recovered, but I did not have an hour to sit there staring at it. If I am at fault it is for not shutting down my MBP, but putting it to sleep at night. Usually I restart it about once a week or so. I may have to abandon this practice and shut down every night. After the restart every thing seems back to order for now. In the near future I plan on upgrading this hardware to 8GB RAM.
I am not a programmer, but there seems to be something woefully inadequate in the MacOS when it allows itself to reach this state. I understand memory leakage and imagine it would not be that difficult to monitor memory usage and put out a warning that available memory is low and a restart is recommended or hold enough memory in reserve so that there will always be enough control to tell the computer to restart. I'd like to be sure Apple gets this message. Is this the best way, is there another avenue, or should I email/call them directly?
And looking for advice on how avoid SBB in the future. Thanks!

    Dave,
Sorry to hear of your troubles, I'll try to add my two cents worth.
    Feedback to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback
Of course, there is the old fashioned letter (physical paper) to the president or some other officer of the company. I'm sure someone will see it. I've found this works well, as it is so rare these days that it gets attention - usually.
Regarding SBB (Spinning Beach Balls) and RAM, I agree with you that 8GB RAM and probably an SSD of some sort are a good starting point or base for decent performance. I've noticed that is usually the set-up on display at the Apple retail stores. FYI: I never or very rarely ever reboot my MacBook and it works well enough. But it does seem slow at times (particularly at boot up and initial opening of applications), yet surprises me at other times with how fast it does some things - once they are opened initially and in RAM somewhere.
I have a MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012 with 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Intel Video, with OS 10.9.1 (Mavericks). It works well enough with Mavericks and Apple only software, but add Chrome and all bets are off. It will work, but is much slower as Chrome loads lots of stuff right up front. Once everthing is loaded it runs well enough though. I've come to believe that any software not native to the OS is suspect!
I have to add though that for the past month or so, I have moved over to a PC laptop for access to MS Word (touchscreen is okay too) and the MacBook is just sitting there collecting dust. I'm not suggesting you do that - I was just curious and have been a long time user of multiple platforms.
In reading your post, it seems your MBP (MacBook Pro) ran fine for 3 days then suddenly had problems. What happened or was installed in that 3 day period? How did you restore your data? I ask because once I restored from a Time Machine backup to a MBP and had all sorts of problems including bad performance, and sleep issues. The only answer that I came up with was to manually transfer all data and just data (files) into the new OS (after a fresh install). Data was transferred manually using an external HDD. Just a thought.
Of course, your post also mentions that you had SBBs on your first upgrade to 10.8 before Mavericks and in-fact that was the reason for upgrading to Mavericks. I would guess whatever problems you had with 10.8 were just incorporated into Mavericks and magnified. A clean install of whatever OS (not an update) and using only native OS apps at first then slowly adding one at a time non-OS-native apps as needed while keeping an eye on resources via Activity Monitor can be of great help and lots of times identifies many problems - perhaps even with an OS native-app.
How are you doing your install of Mavericks - off the internet, locally? My internet is so slow that I ended up creating a boot/recovery USB 3.0 fast flash drive and that helps tons with the whole process. Here is a one link of many of that process: http://www.macworld.com/article/2056561/how-to-make-a-bootable-mavericks-install -drive.html.
Another issue that slowed down one of my Macs was found in a conflict between iWorks '09 and the new Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. I updated to the newer versions with the older versions still installed and it caused lots of problems including decreased performance. I think the older iWorks included indexing in Spotlight while the newer one did something different, so the HDD was forever indexing and killing the system (unusable!). I really don't know what the actual technical problem was, but I ended up removing the older iWorks and using the newer exclusively. The problem cleared up. I did end up re-installing iWork '09 later but it is not the default program, and I have to specifically request that a Pages document open with it.
You had also mentioned memory leakage in passing. Activity Monitor on your Mac will monitor memory and processes and is a handy tool for checking into that. Watch for non-native OS applications in my opinion. It seems like this might be a real possibility given that you posted how a reboot fixes the problems albeit temporarily.
Have you checked you HDD to ensure that it is clean (e.g. verify permissions, and repair disk). I usually like to run this using Disk Utility from a recovery disk (e.g. USB flash drive) or outside of the OS. I guess you could also run it off the internal partition. Hold Option then press power to boot to boot manager then select recovery partition. -  Command + R brings up the same thing but off the internet and can be slow depending on you ISP speed (your laptop may need the firmware update seen below in a hyperlink to do this). I just wanted to make sure the HDD is sound and without corruption.
Here are some more keyboard combos that are handy.
Cmd + Ctrl + power button = force restart
Cmd + Option + P + R (hold all then press Power Button) = clears your PRAM or NVRAM (a good place to start).
Option hold then Power Button = boot manager (to get to recovery another way).
Shift hold then Power Button = safe mode (might try this to see how it responds)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533 here is the "official" list.
http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_use_os_x_boot_options_troubleshoot_you r_mac here is an older unofficial list with explainations.
Clearing PRAM alone has fixed issues for me in the past.
    Firmware: done?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904  is a firmware update for MacBooks circa 2011 and earlier guessing this has been done or is not necessary.
Hope something in here touches a chord or kicks off a spark to help find your MacBook's problem(s).
    Good luck.

  • Mavericks and airplay

Hallo! I'm using mavericks and apple tv, but the airplay button on my laptop isn't there, why??

I found out that the built in firewall interferes with AirPlay (which I know is weird).
Try turning the OS X firewall off using System Settings -> Security. If AirPlay now works, turn on the firewall and add "coreaudio" to the list of exceptions. This worked for me.
Coreaudio is the system driver for audio.
