Max memory allocation in Windows 2000
Hi,
I want to allocate more than 1.6GB of memory to JVM. So, I use:
"%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java" -server -ms1024m -mx1680m
I get following error while starting weblogic server: "Error occurred during initialization
of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap"
Spec:
Windows 2000 Server (dual processor + 4GB RAM)
Weblogic 6.1 sp1
JVM: 1.3.1 (bundled with Weblogic)
I am aware that Windows NT 4.0/JVM had limitation that more than 1.6GB cannot
be allocated. But for Windows 2000, microsoft had removed that limitation by redoing
its memory address management whereby for Windows 2000 Server apps can get more
than 1.6GB.
I want to allocate more than 1.6GB (preferably upto 3GB) for my Weblogic process
but I get this exception.
You help/input will be really appreciated.
Thanks.
Assuming that your application isn't continuously reading into memory ever-increasing amounts of data, the thing to look for are references that you aren't closing when you are finished with them.

Is there a VI to monitor CPU and memory usage on wINDOWS 2000 system ?
I want to monitor CPU usage and available memory for Windows 2000 computer. Is there a VI that can call the task mngr. via a DLL to provide this information in real time ?
There was a nice example using .NET technology, but it seems the link has changed and I cannot find it anymore. See this older thread for some clues.
Does anyone know what happened to the target of the original link in my old post?

Cant launch JVM with high max memory allocation
We have a couple of Windows machines - a Win7 and Win Server 2012 - both being 64-bit machines. The Win7 machine has 190GB of RAM and the Win Server has 500GB RAM. We are running a memory hungry application so we tried to allocate as much RAM as possible. We have however discovered that we CANNOT allocate more than 160GB RAM on both machines to Java - we get a "Java Platform Binary SE has stopped working" message (we are running Java 1.7.0_13). I have read in various places that the OS "has a say" in the amount of RAM that can be allocated/passed on to Java but havent found any conclusive description/explanation. I'm hoping to get as accurate a picture as possible as to why we getting this apparent restriction - especially with the Win Server machine which has 500GB RAM. Details on why Windows is doing this - if it is - will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.Probably (hopefully) some environment limit.
Briefly googling doesn't suggest anything.
If it was me....
- I would write a C++\C# app to test maximum app limit. If that is limited by the same amount then it proves it in an environment and not java limit.
- Look into paid support requests to Oracle and\or Microsoft to ask them why the limit might exist. -
Data Deduplication - max memory allocation
Hi
i encountered this issue on a server:
2012R2
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2891882/
i have configured the value from the KB, but i still get:
Data Deduplication detected job type "Optimization" on volume "\\?\Volume{8ce5ac3c-46df-4a37-8a9e-c4b28f1354d1}\" uses too much memory. 3179 MB is assigned. 3870 MB is used.
Data Deduplication cancelled job type "Optimization" on volume "\\?\Volume{8ce5ac3c-46df-4a37-8a9e-c4b28f1354d1}\". It uses too much memory than the amount assigned to it.
for the volume with most data.
can the value be increased?Hi,
Please try to attempt a workaround by adding the following registry key with value 1000 to resolve the issue.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ddpsvc\Settings\WlmMemoryOverPercentThreshold

Hi Support Team,
I need know if exists any jrockit 7.0 memory limitation in windows 2000 advanced server. I'm using 4GT RAM Tuning Feature into a machine with 4 GB in RAM.
Thnks in advance,
RicardoEach process on Windows gets ~2GB. In the JRockit process space, this memory
gets divided into one part for the java heap and the rest is used for shared
libraries, internal structures used during code generation, garbage
collecting etc.

Oracle 8i Failsafe, Windows 2000, AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY key
Issue: Upgrading the Physical memory on the Windows 2000 Advanced server running Oracle 8.1.7.4.1 to 8GB.
With ref. to metalink Doc ID: Note:225349.1
I understand, it is required to tweak the OS and Oracle 8i to an extent, in order to take advantage of the additional memory.
The following are the changes I am planning in order to have a successful transition.
- Adding the /PAE switch to the boot.ini file.
- Adding USE_INDIRECT_DATA_BUFFERS=TRUE parameter to the init.ora file.
- Setting DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS = 512000 in the init.ora file.
- Setting DB_BLOCK_LRU_LATCHES = 64 in the init.ora file.
- Setting SHARED_POOL_SIZE = 300M in the init.ora file.
- Adding the registry key AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY with a value equal to 4Gb. (HKLM\Software\Oracle\Homex)
Since this is a failsafe setup, we have multiple homes that showup in the registery (HKLM\Software\Oracle\Homex). I have HOME0 thro HOME3 on both the nodes fo the cluster.
My question is, to which home do i add the AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY key ?
Thanks
ShashiDear alanm.
Thanks for your reply.
Is your machine 32-bit based windows or 64-bit based?
You have set "4GT" with /3GB option.
Is it possible to set AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY over 3Giba bytes on 32-bit windows?
Best Regards.

Sql server is using memory more then there max memory setting?
Hi All,
today i have faced the different issue..........
we have one SQl server 2008 prod server... it have memory issue actually total server memory is 8GB and we have allocated the 6 GB to SQL server,we checked the server no open trans and dont have running jobs also, one database is using the memory high(no
open trans)... but Sql server has used 6.5 GB (6 GB) and total server used memory is reached to 7.89 GB.
Please tell me how to find the most costly query in particular database wise and sql server internally behavior ?
how to troubleshot the above issue?
please post the your valuable answers ASAP...
Thanks,
RAMPlease refer to what Olaf said briefly.Buffer pool in SQL server only caters to memory requests which requires pages <8 KB . Almost all requests are satisfies by buffer pool and generally request for memory is small and so buffer pool satisfies the requests.
However there are some direct memory allocation by windows API which is done by windows for requests which requires memory greater than 8 KB. This memory wont come from buffer pool and this would be counted in memory utilized by SQL server. SQL
CLR,XML, linked Server, all takes memory outside buffer pool in SQL Server 2008. This behavior changed in 2012 so my statement only applies to SQL server 2005/2008 and 2008 R2.
I would run below to check SQL server memory utilization.
select
(physical_memory_in_use_kb/1024)Memory_usedby_Sqlserver_MB,
(locked_page_allocations_kb/1024 )Locked_pages_used_Sqlserver_MB,
(total_virtual_address_space_kb/1024 )Total_VAS_in_MB,
process_physical_memory_low,
process_virtual_memory_low
from sys. dm_os_process_memory
I am sure you must be using some features mentioned above. You were worried that even though there is no query running on SQL server it has still holded up the memory. This is default behavior and this is how memory management in SQL Server works. It will
not release memory untill SQLOS asks it to do so which is told by windows OS thorugh some flag that it is facing memory pressure.
Please read below for more details on memory. There is section to test whether system is facing memory crunch please read that as well.

KT4V & Windows 2000 startup hang
Everything works fine, except during the Windows 2000 splash screen, the blue bar gets to half way, then the computer hangs there for about a minute or two, then boots.
Everything seems to work fine and its fast.
I can't figure out why its hanging like this.
I've tried about every BIOS setting there is. I've reloaded Windows 2 or 3 times. Changed the video card (no other cards in system). Turned off the built in LAN.
Changed memory.
Using:
Windows 2000 SP3
Maxtor 20G
AthlonXP 2200
2x256MB=512MB
Any ideas?
I was gonna try installing Win2K with SP1. Then update from there. After 2 days of headache it came down to this motherboard not wanting/liking an Afreey 8x DVD/CDROM player.
It does not like this reader, period.

Memory allocation model on Windows
We have an application server with 16 GB of RAM and 54 GB of SWAP.
The application server run on a Windows 2003 IA64 SP2.
We are using 6.40_ex2 kernel.
When we run intensive memory program (program that use a lot of memory in internal table) we see that all the EM is allocated in PM.
HM too is allocated in PM until the PM rech less than 200 MB.
When the PM is less than 200 MB the total VM used on the server is less than 25 GB (EM: 10 GB; HM < 10 GB).
There are SAP kernel rules that defined what allocate in RAM and what allocate in Paging file?
We think that should be a better distribution from RAM and SWAP but we don't know if it is a right consideration.Essbase should use the amount of memory allocated in the Database settings, (plus some overhead for the Agent / App Server itself, which should be nowhere near 4G).Take a look at the database settings within the application. Look at the Index Cache, Data Cache and Data File Cache to ensure are not set absurdly high. As a test, leave them at their default values - worry about tuning them later. Also, how many Essbase applications are running on this server? Is it just the one?Regards,Jade-----------------------------------Jade ColeSenior Business Intelligence ConsultantClarity

Memory usage exceed -Xmx option in Windows 2000.
Hi ,
I run the java application with -Xms300M -Xmx600M option in Windows 2000.
When I start the application, it's virtual memory size is 300M.
(In Windows TaskManager choose the Processes Tab and select "Select Columns..." option in View menu. And check the "Virtual Memory Size".)
After several test I found that it's virtual memory size is bigger than 600M in Windows TaskManager.
It's virtual memory size is about 650M.
Why the application's memory usage is bigger than 600M despite of -Xmx600M?The -Xms and -Xmx control the Java heap size only.
The stack does not go on the heap, and the VM will need some memory of its own as well. -
Memory usage in windows nt and windows 2000
My program is polling, visualizing and saving continuously sent data. When I use it under Windows NT(sp6), after some time the computer runs out of virtual memory. In the task manager I can see the memory usage increasing with time. But when I use it under windows 2000(sp3) and look at the task manager nothing important happens, the memory usage is quite constant. Does anyone have any idea about this situation? Any help would be most appreciated.

Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues
Hi all
I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
The error messages are :
"Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.
Cheers
Neil Hughes

Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

Memory Allocation under Different Operating Systems
Hello
What is the exact behavior of java -Xmsn -Xmxn under different operating systems?
I am running my application on windows and linux.
In linux i specify java -Xms512M -Xmx512M and it seems to only initially allocate 22M (i have enough space on the machine).
I also do the same on windows and it seems to allocate 97M or so.
Does any understand what exactly happens when you allocate min and max memory on different operating systems? Are these options fully functioning?
ThanksAS far as I know -Xms is the minimum size of the heap, and when the VM will be created it'll bild a heap of this size.
Ussually on servers this parameters are fixed to the same size, to the limit of memory that the machine has. This has one advantage: everytime the heap increases your application may be stopped because of the need of ollocate new memory. If you make the initial size of the heap to bhe equal to the minimum this never will occur, despite the starupo of the application will be slower due to the need of allocating big amounts of Ram.
About what you have seen, I'm afraid you are doing something wrong. This parameter works, and if you stated that -Xms128m, the initial heap of your aplication will be this (I've just checked it under Windows 2000).

I am not sure but I think the problem is with the allocated shared memory size, which right now is:
<b>init.ora</b>
shared_pool_size = 67108864
<b>init<SID>.ora</b>
shared_pool_size = 90112000
shared_pool_reserved_size = 9011200
If this is the cause of the problem then how much should i increase it to? and do i need to modify the size in both files or only init<SID>.ora? Is there any SAP Note related to this problem? Thanks.
Regards,Hi Vasu,
ORA-4031... for 99% of cases this means one thing:
the database instance is not configured correctly.
To proceed, do the following:
1. get rid of init.ora (it's not used at all)
2. make sure that the init<sid>.ora file is really used.
If there is a spfile in the %ORACLE_HOME&/database folder
then this will be used.
3. With your configured shared pool of 85MB your memory should really not be filled up - anyhow it's really too small for a SAP system!
Thus I'd check how much memory the other sga-area members (buffer cache, large pool, streams pool, java pool...) take up.
Remember on Windows 32 Bit, everything runs in one single process that can only allocate 2GB (or 3GB if you've set this option).
See note:

for more on this.
And when you're setting up parameters anyway, check note

Java 1.4.2_04 Aggressive Heap on Windows 2000 Server
Hi all
I seem to be having trouble ith the JVM switch of -XX:+AggressiveHeap
I have Tomcat 4.1 running with the following extra JVM options
-server -XX:+AggressiveHeap -XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:+UseAdaptiveSizePolicy -XX:+DisableExplicitGC
Its a quad processor, with 3 gigs of RAM
BUT
The java heap is dying at 128MB of RAm - is there any known issues with AggressiveHeap not allocating sufficient available memory on Windows 2000 Server.
From the docs and white papers, if I read correctly, with a 3Gig RAM systems, the white paper says it will allocate half the available physical ram, i.e. 1.5Gig in this case. I seem to be getting only 128MB though?
Help?
PleaseI've worked it out thanks - it was a Tomcat 4.1 as a service oddity...
In Tomcat 4.1, each JVM Option must be entered in the registry as one option per key, e.g.
JVM Option Number 1 -server
JVM Option Number 2 -XX:+AggressiveHeap
and not
JVM Option Number 1 -server -XX:+AggressiveHeap
Hope this is useful to fellow Tomcat users. Oh, and in Tomcat 5, it places all the values into a single key in the registry and works - just for fun I guess ;-)
