Maximize

When I had a PC, there was a minimize/maximize button similar to the green one on my mac. When a window was maximized, it filled all of the screen except for the start bar. But with the min/max button on the mac, it just has two different sizes. Is it because my monitor is widescreen or something? Why doesn't it fill the whole screen?

The green button "+" is called "Zoom". This resizes the window to fit the contents. This is useful as to not fill the screen with unused/wasted space. Mac OS X does not have a "Maximize" button like the Windows OS. To fit things to the screen, you have to manually resize them from the bottom right.
Tip: Drag your desired window to the top left of the screen where only the "Zoom" button can be seen. Press the "Zoom" button, this will resize the window and align it to the left edge. Grab the bottom right and drag it to fill the screen completely.
Tip 2: For Safari, you can set different JavaScripts to automatically resize your browser window. Here is the fullscreen script for you. Just save the following as a bookmark in the "Bookmarks Bar". When clicked, it will resize to fill the screen.
javascript:moveTo(0,22);resizeTo(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight);

• My firefox browser window will not stay in full screen mode, it keeps reducing itself so I can't use the scroll down button on the side, so I have to constantly minimize and maximize to get to the scroll bar, How can I stop this?

Like I said it happens every few minutes... It is annoying when you are on the internet for more than a few minutes because you constantly have to either minimize it or reduce the screen manually by hitting the button and then maximize it again to get the scroll bar to be in view to use it.

Delete the localstore.rdf file at the following location:
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\PROFILE NAME
I did this and it fixed it for several days, but it broke again eventually.

• Firefox opens, and preview shows when hover on the task bar link, but the window will not maximize, or show up at any size on my screen (Windows 7) Help?!

I am running Windows 7 and just updated Firefox to the 7.0 version. I can open Firefox, in the sense that I can run the application. I can see that it is open because the link shows up on my task bar, and when I hover over it I can see the thumbnail preview - which, incidentally says "You're almost there!"; but I can not open the window! I have tried clicking once on the task bar link, and once again (just in case I was clicking to minimize instead of maximize). I have tried double clicking the shortcuts on my desktop, then the one in my program files, as well as the one in my start menu, and the static one pinned to my task bar. I have tried accessing Firefox from every path available on my computer and I can open it every time, but *never* not even once have I been able to view it on my screen. I can't understand what would cause this and maybe I'm just an idiot but can anybody help me... please? Oh, and I don't know if it makes any difference, but I did try restoring 6.0 and I re installed 7.0 again, all to the same end... Many thanks to anyone willing to help me fix this!

-> Run as Administrator
-> right-click Firefox icon and choose Properties
* go to Compatibility tab
* click Use Resolution 640x480 pixels
* click OK and start Firefox
-> Firefox will now start but you should be able to change the size of the window.
* Close Firefox and now Uncheck the 640x480 resolution
* Start Firefox again and now all should be fine
Check and tell if its working.

• How do I use a Tab key to maximize a frame?

How can I use a Tab key (vk_tab) pressed on the focused frame to actually maximize the frame... what action should it have attached to it?
thanks!

tab is the focus traversal key, so will be consumed before getting to your listener
try this instead
        KeyboardFocusManager.getCurrentKeyboardFocusManager()
         .addKeyEventDispatcher(new KeyEventDispatcher(){
            public boolean dispatchKeyEvent(KeyEvent e){
              if(e.getID() == KeyEvent.KEY_PRESSED)
                if(e.getKeyCode() == KeyEvent.VK_TAB ) f.setExtendedState(JFrame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH);
              return false;
        });

• Strange problem with RDP and mouse, only solved after minimize/maximize

Good day,
We have this very annoying problem with a RDP Terminal Server. It is Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
This server has the Session Host role installed, with local RDP user licenses.
We only have this issue when running a certain application.
This application is called Rockwell FactoryTalk View and this in an application to display industrial processes.
It will take the Full Screen in a fixed resolution and will display buttons, objects, values... The application also uses Internet Explorer cache so I think it uses ActiveX, Flash or Java, I don't know.
What sometimes happens is this:
- The mouse point is able to move in the entire screen (good)
- The mouse button will only work in 1 certain area of the screen (which is a small rectangle)
- The mouse "hovering" above objects will also only highlight items that are in this rectangle
- The keyboard remains functional and with alt-tab other objects or other applications can get focus, but still no mouse clicking
The problem can be solved by:
- Minimizing the RDP window and maximizing it again
- Or: Sending a message to the session using task manager, after clicking "OK" on that message the problem is gone
Normally, about 5 users will have this application opened in their session, the "crash" is only effecting 1 session.
The problem seems to happen randomly and we don't know if we should point to the FactoryTalk application, or to Terminal Services/RDP. The end users have no rights to minimize/maximize, this is not the solution.
Is it possible to have any input on this please?
Thank you.

Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Firstly please check with the application support team whether the application is fully supported by Windows Server 2008 R2 in remote session. In addition, suggest you to update the client RDP version to RDP 8.1 and check the result for better feature and functionality.
Apart from this, there is Hotfix for the issue. Please download, install and check the result.
Cause:
The issue occurs because the remote desktop ActiveX object does not deactivate the focus of the remote desktop session when the focus is lost. Because the focus is still activated, the remote desktop ActiveX object cannot set the focus of the remote desktop
session again when you change the focus back to the session.
A remote desktop session does not respond to keyboard input or mouse input after it loses the focus in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Hope it helps!
Thanks.

• Unexpected performance of Firefox in Windows 7, namely minimize/maximize/close buttons not working and unable to move/resize window.

I have been using FF for a while now. My main computer was WinXP-32, though I recently bought a new laptop with Win7-64 installed. This problem was never experienced on my WinXP machine.
Brief description of problem:
After a time of having FF up and running, the minimize/maximize/restore/close buttons in the top-right no longer work as expected and, if not maximised, I cannot move the window around my desktop nor resize the browser window. When clicked, the buttons will
rapidly flash on and off continuously without appearing to perform any noticeable function other than temporarily hogging CPU cycles. I've found that clicking (sometimes double clicking) in the main browser window then mousing over the buttons again seems
to stop them flashing, though does nothing else.
To minimize/maximize/restore/move/close the window(s), I have to right-click on the relevant tab in my taskbar and pick the desired option. Occasionally, however, even this doesn't work and the right-click menu will disappear as soon as I move the mouse
over it after right-clicking. 'Show desktop' is a temporary fix for minimising windows and 'ALT + F4' or 'CTRL + W' for closing windows or tabs. This isn't satisfactory and to move or resize a window, I have to close the window in question (sometimes all other
windows too), reopen it and do what I need to do, though sometimes even this is only a very short fix. If I have to close all the windows, FF will sometimes keep running for a while afterwards, even though no windows are actually open - simply ending the process
via the windows task manager will fix this though is only a work-around, not a fix.
One thing I have noticed is that if I manage to move the browser window (when not maximised), for a short period afterwards I can often resize the window successfully. This is more likely to occur if the browser window is not flush with the edge of my screen
once moved.
I've tried to include as much information as I can - most of which was determined after several minutes/hours of playing around with different scenarios, trying to manually reproduce particular problems or simply through sheer luck of happening to click
in the right place at the right time! I hope there is a reasonably fix for this at some point in the not-too-distant future.
I noticed in some of the threads at another site where people have voiced problems similar to mine, that a link to 'ObjectDock' was discovered in some cases. I do have 'ObjectDock 1.90 Plus' installed on my machine and use it in many ways and so decided
to see if I could find a connection between the two. I have uninstalled, tested, and reinstalled both programs in a multitude of ways, though could find no conclusive correlation between having both bits of software running or installed at the same time and
the problems I am experiencing. In my case, at least, this does not appear to be an answer.
Also, in another thread on this site, someone suggested there might be a link with AVG Anti-Virus Free (I have version 9.0.819) though I've tried uninstalling it and its various add-ons in several different combinations, with no noticeable improvement.
Sorry for such a long question... If you need to know anything more, just let me know!

Hi Kossa,
You can also check if the issue occurs in
Clean Boot. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, you can continue to narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
Besides, uninstall it and re-download
a fresh copy of FireFox to check the result. If the issue still exists, create a new user account to see if it occurs.
If the issue persists, you can contact Mozilla Support directly and use Internet Explorer (IE) during the time.

• Missing maximize, minimize and close buttons

I see that people have been having problems with these issues before the finalized FF4, I have the most updated version on my PC. The answers all seem to say it was a problem with beta versions. When I stay online for long periods of time my full screen, minimize and close buttons disappear. I have 2 screens and have found that when I pull a tab to the other screen the buttons reappear with that tab. But all the tabs still on previous screens are still missing. If I pull the whole set of tabs (opened together) I still can not get the buttons to reappear. when I am ready to close all the open tabs at once I use task manager and close down FF4. Right now I see my background screen where the button should be.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: Command+Shift+F).
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/how-to-use-full-screen
If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top of the screen to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.<br>Click the Maximize button (top right corner of the Navigation Toolbar) to leave full screen mode or right-click empty space on a toolbar and choose "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press the F11 key.
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

no. but you can make resizable.

• Maximize Application without Window Manager

What I'd like to do is use xwininfo and wmctrl to maximize an application in X without a window manager. Here is what I've worked out:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
MAXIMIZE_ID=$(xwininfo -root -child | grep "st-256color" | grep -o "^:space:*0x:alnum:*" | grep -o "0x:alnum:*")
MAXIMIZE_WIDTH=$(xwininfo -root | grep "Width" | grep -o ":digit:*")
MAXIMIZE_HEIGHT=$(xwininfo -root | grep "Height" | grep -o ":digit:*")
while [ "$MAXIMIZE_ID" = "" ]
do
MAXIMIZE_ID=$(xwininfo -root -child | grep "st-256color" | grep -o "^:space:*0x:alnum:*" | grep -o "0x:alnum:*")
if [ "$MAXIMIZE_ID" != "" ]
then
wmctrl -i -r $MAXIMIZE_ID -e 0,0,0,$MAXIMIZE_WIDTH,$MAXIMIZE_HEIGHT
fi
done &
exec st
As intended it maximizes the st terminal. However, the terminal simply hangs there, I can provide it with no input, any clues as to what I'm missing and/or doing incorrectly? I realize st uses the geometry parameter, I'm only using it here as an example application as not all applications support that parameter.

It's much more complex than that.  Wmctrl requires a EWMH compliant window manager.  Many of the lightest weight WMs are not EWMH compliant.
Is this just for st, or do you want all windows maximized?  Does st have a 'geometry' flag?
You could write a WM that does nothing but fullscreen every window that is mapped in about a dozen lines of code.  Note, however, that without a WM, windows will generally not properly be assigned the input focus - one result is that cursors on most terminals will remain 'hollow'.  For the cost of one or two more lines of code, this new WM could also set input focus appropriately.
EDIT: st does have a geometry flag, just use that.
Also, your 'grep | grep' pipe could just be "awk '/Width/ { print $2;}'", or two get both width and height in one go:
xwininfo -root | awk '/Width/ { printf "%s", $2;} /Height/ {printf "x%s", $2;}'
Though this wouldn't be quite right for a st geometry string as that takes rows and columns, not pixels.
EDIT2: your solution will also fail miserably for two other reasons.  There is not point in initializing the MAXIMIZEID variable before the loop starts - because if there actually are any windows there, the while loop will never run.  Also, without a sleep command, or something, all that while loop will be very good for will be to turn your cpu into a frying pan (100% cpu use -> heat).
Here's a very plain WM that will do the same thing without melting your CPU:
#include <X11/Xlib.h>
int main(void) {
Display *dpy;
if(!(dpy = XOpenDisplay(0x0))) return 1;
XEvent ev;
int scr = DefaultScreen(dpy);
int sw = DisplayWidth(dpy, scr);
int sh = DisplayHeight(dpy, scr);
Window w, root = RootWindow(dpy, scr);
XSelectInput(dpy, root, SubstructureRedirectMask);
while (!XNextEvent(dpy, &ev)) {
if (ev.type == MapRequest && (w=ev.xmaprequest.window)) {
XMoveResizeWindow(dpy, w, 0, 0, sw, sh);
XMapWindow(dpy, w);
XSetInputFocus(dpy, w, RevertToPointerRoot, CurrentTime);
XFlush(dpy);
return 0;

Click on the green button.  Or you adjust from the bottom right to fill the window.   With Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can adjust from any of the window edges.  Only upgrade to 10.7 or later if you have read this tip:

• Close, Minimize, Maximize buttons won't work

So lately the close, minimize and maximize buttons in Safari, Chrome and Firefox won't work. Also, I can't move/drag the window easily, I have to click like 10 times and try over and over again so I can drag it. If I have two windows open (not tabs) I cant close unless i go cmd+W. Do you know what must be wrong? Those buttons work fine in some apps, but finder has that problem too.. I try to force close them and they won't eve appear on task manager, which is weird, they used to. Oh and my launchpad button (in the dock and in the keyboard) also doesn't work.

I found out that it wasn't just Safari, I had the same problem with FireFox. On the forum I found the (I think) solution:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12073845#12073845
It looks like the problem is solved

• Powershell IE autostart and maximization crashes

Hello,
For starters i would like to say that i am really new in powershell and scripting itself, but i hope i have legit problem that someone could help me to solve.
I`m trying to create powershell script that starts Internet Explorer and maximizes than periodically checks if IE is till running starts it if it`s not, and if it is started then maximizes it if if its not. (everything that is seen in this script i have
scrapped from your forum and kind of tried to put it together.
Here is the script:
for (;;) {
$processToCheck = "iexplore"
$process = Get-Process $processToCheck -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
If (!($process)) {
$ie = New-Object -ComObject InternetExplorer.Application
$ie.Visible = $true
$ie.Navigate("www.google.com")
$sw = @'
[DllImport("user32.dll")]
public static extern int ShowWindow(int hwnd, int nCmdShow);
$type = Add-Type -Name ShowWindow2 -MemberDefinition $sw -Language CSharpVersion3 -Namespace Utils -PassThru
$type::ShowWindow($ie.hwnd, 3) # 3 = maximize
start-sleep -s 5
else
{$sig = '[DllImport("user32.dll")]
public static extern bool ShowWindowAsync(IntPtr hWnd, int nCmdShow);'
Add-Type -MemberDefinition $sig -name NativeMethods -namespace Win32
$hwnd = @(Get-Process iexplore)[0].MainWindowHandle
# Maximize window
[Win32.NativeMethods]::ShowWindowAsync($hwnd, 3)
start-sleep -s 5
Now about my issue. This script seems to do the trick but not every time. Sometimes if i just start it it starts IE normally and in 5 secs maximizes it and after that i can minimize or just change screen size and it will properly maximize. Issues start if
i close IE and it has to reopen. From time to time IE hangs. Everything lese in background works and i can stop my PS script from executing but IE stays Hanged till i kill it through Task manager Alt+F4 or any other way.
I tried to run the first part with plane start-process iexplore -wait and it does not hang.
As much as i understand (i might be terribly wrong though) IE is not fully started before rest of the code is executed and that leads to IE hang but -wait command does not help since it waits till IE is closed.
I hope i have made my point clear.
UPD1: Sometimes it hangs from the beggining
Best regards

I did something like this a while back using a WMI event sink in a VBScript script...
' If IE isn't running, start it maximized.
' Restart IE automatically if it closes.
' Global constants
Const ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND = 2
Const SW_SHOWMAXIMIZED = 3
' Global objects
Dim FSO, WshShell, SWbemServices, EventSink
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Set SWbemServices = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationlevel=impersonate}" _
& "!root/CIMV2")
Set EventSink = WScript.CreateObject("WbemScripting.SWbemSink", "EVENTSINK_")
' Global variables
Dim IEProcessID
' Returns full path and filename of Internet Explorer (32-bit on x64).
Function GetIEPath()
Dim WshEnvironment, ProgramFiles, IEPath
Set WshEnvironment = WshShell.Environment("PROCESS")
If WshEnvironment.Item("ProgramFiles(x86)") = "" Then
ProgramFiles = WshEnvironment.Item("ProgramFiles")
Else
ProgramFiles = WshEnvironment.Item("ProgramFiles(x86)")
End If
IEPath = FSO.BuildPath(ProgramFiles, "\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe")
If Not FSO.FileExists(IEPath) Then
WScript.Echo "Internet Explorer not found"
WScript.Quit ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
End If
GetIEPath = IEPath
End Function
' Returns process ID of iexplore.exe, or -1 if not found.
Function GetIEProcessID()
Dim Result, Collection, Item
Result = -1
Set Collection = SWbemServices.ExecQuery("select ProcessId from " _
& "Win32_Process where Name='iexplore.exe'")
For Each Item In Collection
Result = Item.ProcessId
Exit For
Next
GetIEProcessID = Result
End Function
' Starts IE maximized and returns its process ID.
Function StartIE()
Dim ProcStartup, Process, Result, ProcessID
Set ProcStartup = SWbemServices.Get("Win32_ProcessStartup").SpawnInstance_()
ProcStartup.ShowWindow = SW_SHOWMAXIMIZED
Set Process = SWbemServices.Get("Win32_Process")
Result = Process.Create(GetIEPath, Null, ProcStartup, ProcessID)
If Result <> 0 Then
WScript.Echo "Unable to start Internet Explorer; WMI error " & CStr(Result)
WScript.Quit Result
End If
StartIE = ProcessID
End Function
' WMI asyncronous event sink: If IE closes, start it again.
Sub EVENTSINK_OnObjectReady(ByVal ObjectEvent, ByVal Context)
If ObjectEvent.TargetInstance.ProcessId = IEProcessID Then
IEProcessID = StartIE()
End If
End Sub
' Execute query to receive events asyncronously.
SWbemServices.ExecNotificationQueryAsync _
EventSink, "select * from __InstanceDeletionEvent within 1 where " _
& "TargetInstance isa 'Win32_Process'"
' If IE isn't running, start it and get its process ID.
IEProcessID = GetIEProcessID()
If IEProcessID = -1 Then
IEProcessID = StartIE()

' Loop forever. The event sink will restart IE if it closes.

• Maximize Windows and close applications

After trying to find a person to speak to, i had to gave up and now try in this forum.
Is there no way to ask a question to apple?!?
I mean, sending an email?
Even did everything to get into phone-contact, but only after i did everything, i learned that this is only available in the USA and canada
OK, here are my questions:
I am in dire need of two things:
1)
If i click on the "Zoom" Button on an application, it shall MAXIMIZE, taking up all room available beside the space needed for the upper menu bar and that was is needed for the dock (if it is visible).
2)
When i close the last windows on an application, it shall close the application!
How can i accomplish that in Mac OS X?
Does anybody know?
Could anybody hint to be a mail-address, where i could ask this question?
Thanx a bunch!

1) If i click on the "Zoom" Button on an application, it shall MAXIMIZE, taking up all room available beside the space needed for the upper menu bar and that was is needed for the dock (if it is visible).
That's not how Mac OS X works (at least by default), and isn't what most people want anyway, it's just what they are used to in Windows and stems from a time past where users typically did one thing (or at least only ran one application) at a time. It made sense for that application to use all the screen.
That is no longer the case in modern operating systems where users may have many applications running at once, and benefit from being able to overlay applications.
It's even more true when you look at modern applications with their myriad of toolbars, palettes, etc. - you need to be able to position the document windows independent of the user interface elements.
And it's yet more true when you look at modern hardware options like a 30" display. There is no way it is practical to zoom a web page, for example, to fill a 30" screen.
Instead Apple's model leaves it to the developer to determine what the optimal size is for their windows. For a page-creation application (e.g. word processing, desktop publishing, etc.) it makes sense for the document window to size relative to the page being created. For a graphics application such as Photoshop it makes sense for the window to size based on the image being edited, and for a web application such as Safari it makes sense for the document window to size based on the web page you're viewing. In most cases, none of these make sense to fill the screen.
Now there are cases where it is valid to fill the screen such as presentations and kiosks, but for these you typically need applications designed for such purposes (e.g. Keynote or PowerPoint for presentations) but it is still the responsibility of the application to set its view accordingly.

• How can I maximize the usage of my Apple products when running my small business?

I use Apple Products for everything. I recently opened my own women's clothing boutique and I am also a clothing designer. I want to utilize my products to the fullest. I have an iPhone, iPad Mini, MacBook Pro and another iPad for my register at the boutique and all other business things. What are some apps that I can use to maximize the usage of my products? I see all these amazing things on the commercials but I can never narrow down the things that would benefit me.

Nope.

• Can't figure out how to maximize the space on the page by increasing the column width

Trouble with pages app:
can't figure out how to maximize the space on the page by increasing the column width
I have 3 columns and they have spaces btw them that I cannot close the gap on.

Whatever the version, you can click on the gutter figure and edit it.
Click once on the column and a second time on the Gutter measurement.
