Maxperformance vs maxavailability
Hi Gurus,
We are in the process of setting up data guard,
what is the way to measure
1) the percent performance impact caused to primary database due to data guard (maxperformance or maxavailability)
2) Business want to go for maxavailability for better protection for our data without compromising the performance much.
we want to measure the performance impact to primary. how to measure? Any pointers would be helpful.
Thank you.
Zero Data Loss protection is Zero Data Loss protection. There is no compromise, either you want it or you do not. If you want it then it does not matter if there is an impact because you want it. If you care more about performance than zero data loss then you don't want it :^)
The only way to measure the impact is to run a workload without a standby and see how long it takes. Then turn on the standby, let it get synchronized with the Primary and then up the Protection to Maximum Availability (SYNC AFFIRM with Standby redo log files at the standby) and run the workload again. Compare the results. The way SYNC works is as follows.
In 11.1 and before:
User commits
LGWR gets the necessary redo from the Log Buffer (all clients who are ready to commit) and writes it to the Online Redo Log (ORL) file.
LGWR tells the LNS process for the SYNC standby to get and send the same redo.
LNS gets the redo from the Log Buffer, sends it to the standby where it is written to the Standby Redo Log (SRL) file and an ACK is sent back.
LGWR gets the ack and tells the clients that they are committed.
Total time calculation is "ORL I/O + Network Round Trip (RTT) + SRL I/O"
In 11.2 and after:
User commits
LGWR gets the necessary redo from the Log Buffer (all clients who are ready to commit) and writes it to the Online Redo Log file.
In parallel to the above, the NSS process gets the redo from the Log Buffer, sends it to the standby where it is written to the Standby Redo Logfile and an ACK is sent back.
LGWR gets the ack and tells the clients that they are committed.
Total time calculation is "Network Round Trip (RTT) + SRL I/O"
So with a low latency network in 11.2 there should be very little impact.
But read and implement the MAA best practices paper for Network Tuning at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/availability/maa-wp-10gr2-dataguardnetworkbestpr-134557.pdf paying attention to set the TCP Window sizes to 10MB or the BDP*3 (from the paper) whichever is larger if you arein 11.1 onwards.

Configuration of Bills of Exchange and Letter of Credit
< MODERATOR: Message locked. Please read the [Rules of Engagement|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/wiki?path=/display/home/rulesofEngagement] before posting next time. If you have a specific question, please ask. Otherwise search first. >
Please can someone give me the steps for configuration of Bills Receivable, Payable and Letter of Credit.1) No restart is necessary when dataguard broker is used to upgrade the protection mode from maxperformance to maxavailability, you have to do this if you would change the mode manually outside the broker.
2) ... Won't this be a problem since unless a switchover/ failover has been performed the standby database is not supposed to be mounted? ...
I don't understand this. A standby database is always (at least,it may be even open, depending on the configuration and version, which you don't tell) to be mounted.
You don't need to add 'standby database' to 'alter database mount', because Oracle knows is it a primary or a standby database. This clause is optional, more interesting for a human reader.

Maxperformance with logxptmode sync
Hai,
it's possible if our dataguard configuration will be setup maxperformance with logxpt mode sync?
if the network disconnect between primary and standby(with maxperformance logxpt sync),what happened with primary database?it's effect to our primary database?
Regards,
asmaddyWelcome to OTN Forums!
Please carefully read:
Data Guard Protection modes : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e25608/protection.htm#CHDDIEEA
Transport services : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e25608/log_transport.htm#i1148216
Carefully look : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e25608/protection.htm#CHDDIEEA - this table
if the network disconnect between primary and standby(with maxperformance logxpt sync),what happened with primary database?it's effect to our primary database? Not any effect, because protection mode is Max Performance and transport will runing ASYNC mode.
Like MAX AVAILABILITY mode NETWORK TIMEOUT expired.

I removed the configuration and removed the broker files from RAC primary(mvmxp2) and single instance standby(mvmxs2) and re-created back.i tried it many times but getting error "ORA-16532" .I needed to have this standby backup before i start upgrading the primary.

My question is how to move back to PROD and enable it, what are the options?
Please advice. Thank youHi,
Since you have performed a FAILOVER, this is a one way process. If you were trying to test the role transitions, then you could have gone with SWITCHOVER which is a 2 way process.
Now, you are having only 1 database which is behaving as primary database and you do not have the standby database. If flashback was enabled on your old primary database, then you can reinstate it to behave as standby database.
Since you are using DGMGRL, you can refer this http://gavinsoorma.com/2009/06/using-flashback-to-reinstate-a-standby-after-a-failover/
If using SQL, then you can refer http://shivanandarao.wordpress.com/2012/08/28/dataguard-failover/ -
Protection level "resynchronization"
Have a physical standby setup - oracle 11.2.01 on linux - with active dataguard. All's been fine for a long while. There were performance issues on the standby server (also the home for other databases besides the dg standby). Someone tried using different physical ports and dataguard lost communication. Anyway, there were many logs not transported when I looked at it. In the broker it pointed to a redo transport issue which probably resulted from the network work being done. The database was set to maxavailability with 'SYNC' . So what do I do to get the thing sending logs again? I read to restart the standby which I did but that had no effect. Another person here wanted to set to maxperformance but when we downgraded to that, just the current log got sent and not all the others that needed to.
I'm thinking I might have to manually copy over these logs. Does anyone know if that will be the case?
The protection mode had been maxavailability and the protection level had been "resynchronization". Once I issued the command to set to max performance, now I get
SQL> select protection_mode, protection_level from v$database;
PROTECTION_MODE PROTECTION_LEVEL
MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE
which is fine but like I said - many old logs need to be moved.
Also, both databases use ASM. If I do need to copy over is there a way to copy from asm on one server directly to asm on another or do I need to go to OS files in the middle? So you have a log gap right? I would copy the archived redo from the primary over to the standby site and register them.
You probably have this: (RUN ON STANDBY)
SELECT MAX(R.SEQUENCE#) LAST_SEQ_RECD, MAX(L.SEQUENCE#) LAST_SEQ_SENT
FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG R, V$LOG L
WHERE R.DEST_ID=2 AND L.ARCHIVED='YES';
I cannot speak to the ASM question. -

As for Broker setup steps how about the doc or our Data Guard 11g Handbook?
It's 3 DGMGRL commands so I am not sure what 'steps' you need?

Switchover failed, primary status is 'not allowed'
hi,
i used AS5+11gR2+dg and got a problem after normal switchover.
1.the switchover_status of primary shows 'not allowed'
2.log seems not SYNC.
3.dgmgrl shows 'incorrect database role'.
everything goes OK before switchover, how could this happen and how to switchover back?

I want to upgrade my OS from official repository on Primary and Standby Servers. And I have a question:
Will I have a problem with my RDBMS after upgrade OS (e.g. statuses in dba_registry will become INVALID)?It's Ok.
Now I have:
$ cat /etc/issue
Oracle Linux Server release 6.4
No any problem. -
I have one problem with Data Guard. My archive log files are not applied.
I have one problem with Data Guard. My archive log files are not applied. However I have received all archive log files to my physical Standby db
I have created a Physical Standby database on Oracle 10gR2 (Windows XP professional). Primary database is on another computer.
In Enterprise Manager on Primary database it looks ok. I get the following message Data Guard status Normal
But as I wrote above the archive log files are not applied
After I created the Physical Standby database, I have also done:
1. I connected to the Physical Standby database instance.
CONNECT SYS/SYS@luda AS SYSDBA
2. I started the Oracle instance at the Physical Standby database without mounting the database.
STARTUP NOMOUNT PFILE=C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\database\initluda.ora
3. I mounted the Physical Standby database:
ALTER DATABASE MOUNT STANDBY DATABASE
4. I started redo apply on Physical Standby database
alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session
5. I switched the log files on Physical Standby database
alter system switch logfile
6. I verified the redo data was received and archived on Physical Standby database

Please help me!!!!Hi,
After several tries my redo logs are applied now. I think in my case it had to do with the tnsnames.ora. At this moment I have both database in both tnsnames.ora files using the SID and not the SERVICE_NAME.
Now I want to use DGMGRL. Adding a configuration and a stand-by database is working fine, but when I try to enable the configuration DGMGRL gives no feedback and it looks like it is hanging. The log, although says that it succeeded.
In another session 'show configuration' results in the following, confirming that the enable succeeded.
DGMGRL> show configuration
Configuration
Name: avhtest
Enabled: YES

Fast-Start Failover: DISABLED
Databases:

It there anybody that experienced the same problem and/or knows the solution to this?
With kind regards,
Martin Schaap -

Show Database Get "Object was not found"error
Hi there,
I have a weird situation here.
I created Data Guard Broker setup and show configuration return good result.
It is running for quite a while, and I can see if I switch log file on Primary, the Max Seq# is matched between Primary and Standby. Also do a lot of other test query all return good result.
But today when I happen to run Show Database command it says the DB object not found,
and there is no error in DRCxxx.log file.
Did I miss something? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Problem Converting standby database from snapshot to physical
Any help willl be greatly appreciated...
I am trying to convert a standby database that is in "snapshot" mode back to "physical" standby and I am encountering problems in the process from the "DGMGRL" command line.
Both instances are on the same physical machine. Everything was working fine untill I tried to change the db from snapshot to physical. The DGMGRL starts the conversion process and is able to shutdown but when trying to restart the instance is fails and reports that the service is not defined.
Here is the issue I am facing:

So, here is the status now....with a little background...
After my original post, I started to read the manuals and I found the sql command to convert the database back from snapshot to physical standby (sb).
That worked fine and I had my snapshot sb back to physical sb.
So when you posted the suggestion, I already had my db in physical sb mode. I said no problem, I will convert it back to snapshot and then back again using dgmgrl instead of sql+
Well here is how my listener is configured now.

(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =

(GLOBAL_DBNAME = I11G1SB_DGMGRL)
(ORACLE_HOME = c:\app\mmj\product\11.1.0\db_1)
(SID_NAME = I11G1SB)
Then using dgmgrl I tried to change the db from p-sb to s-sb and the results are not good....

Not sure if the following (notice the typo in the service name) in the parameter (log_archive_dest_2) definition on the standby d/b has anything to do with this. I did not get this error when I initially converted to s-sb.
also I checked all my session notes, I did not type the command to set this parameter on the standby d/b and so it was not a typo on my part. However, it seems to have come from the rman script supplied with the obe. This script is supposed to clone the primary d/b to a standby db and in the process replace the string /i11g1/ with /i11g1sb/.

I am tempted to start all over again, but I'd rather use this opportunity to debug this issue (as a learning exercise). I can always start from scratch. That brings up another Q: What do I need to do to blow away all traces of the stand by database (including all the archive logs etc...) keeping my primary intact. I'd also like to blow away all snapshot and archive logs for the primary as well. -
Cannot Convert standby database from snapshot to physical
Hello all,
I am using Oracle Entreprise version 11gR1 and had made the followings configuration:
- ANAISMD2 : primary database+_+
- ANAISMD3 : physical standby datbase. Created via RMAN
Both are located on the same host running a RH 4.
ANAISMD3 is maintained successfully with the primary.
I can make a fail-over between the both: it works fine.
I can convert ANAISMD3 from physical to snapshot via DGMGRL: it works fine
But I cannot convert back ANAISMD3 to physical, got an error ORA-12514
I had checked also the listener service for both ANAISMD2/ANAISMD3 before launching the conversion:
- the services shown on ANAISMD3 seems correct e.g. ANAISMD2 is seen as a remote server.
- but on ANAISMD2, ANAISMD3 seems incorrect e.g. ANAISMD3 is seen as a local server.
I had attached some screen shots of dg/lsnrctl results;
What are the mistakes
Thank in advance for support

Plus with this make a entry in tnsnames.ora using service name from above or check from lsnrctl status look for service "db_unique_name_DGMGRL.db_domain"
e.g. this is my best practice how i give the names to tns entry

Define same way in both primary and standby db.
Now use these tns entries to create configuration.
e.g.
create configuration prim_db as primary database is db_unique_name connect identifier is "db_unique_name_DGMGRL";

add database stdby_db as connect identifier is "db_unique_name_DGMGRL" MAINTAINED AS PHYSICAL;

Regards,Check that listener for your standby database has proper handler for PIJ10G2_DGMGRL service name. Use static registration for this.
Then, Protection Mode: MaxAvailability implies SYNC log transport mode. Check this option too in your log_archive_dest_NN settings.
