I am creating a web site for a church that I belong to and I
have been asked if there is any way to put recordings of sermons on
the web site. I have no idea what sort of equipment/software would
be needed to do this. I am guessing that the source would orginally
be recorded on a standard recording device and that the audio would
somehow need to be put into digital format. Can anyone point me in
the right direction on this - even another web site where I could
find info on this? I imagine that these files would end up being
quite large... honestly I'm not sure why they want to look into
this but I promised I'd try to get some info. Thanks for any
help.

This is the recorder we use

  • Slightly off topic: Read-only tables pre 11g

    Hi gang
I'm just writing up a database quiz for a local user group and I was hoping I could get a bit of inspiration from the database experts.
One of the questions will be "prior to 11g with the introduction of read-only tables, how could you make a table read-only?". The answers I've come up with:
    1) Security priviliges (schema + grant SELECT)
    2) Triggers
    3) Create a check constraint with disable validate
    4) Read-only tablespace
    5) Read-only database (standby)
    6) (Slightly crazy) Create view, and instead-of triggers that do nothing (similar to 2)
    7) Write the query results on a piece of paper and then turn the database off
Anybody have any other answers, real or slightly off topic like mine please? ;)
    Cheers,
    CM.

Check constraint and trigger solutions may have problems with sqlldr direct path operations, so using it together with alter table disable lock may be mandatory depending on the needs. Especially if DDLs are also wanted to be avoided.

Or does anybody want to sell ? via ebay ?

Sorry for this off topic, but i found no better group.

Maybe it is this bug: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154969
The decisive effect is 'Improved window management' - if this effect is enabled kwin works normally.

  • Off topic question in DOS Batch files ...

    Hi,
I am sorry in advance, for posting an off-topic question. But I had no other known way.
I need to invoke 8 sessions of a java program on 8 different windows. I use Windows platform. I want to write a batch file that will cause the java program to be invoked on a separate window, so that I can watch the execution of 8 sessions at a time. How can I do this (specifically, how can I open a new window in batch files in DOS)?
    Thanks in advance,
    K
My java program invocation is like this:
    C:\>java Site i
where i is a command line argument that will go from 0 to 7.

Batch files (to my limited knowledge) are just "macros" that procedurally run DOS commands. It's just like opening a new command window and sitting there typing a list of commands, except the computer does it for you. So, for example, to run the commands java HelloWorld and cls, the java program would first have to execute before the screen can be cleared. For your purposes, you may need a small launcher app.

  • Camera Settings and Printing -off topic

    Hi Everyone;
My teenage cousin is going on a trip to Europe for a few weeks and she will be taking alot of digital pictures with her Canon point & shoot camera ( 5 MP SD30), but will not be able to unload her images from the SD card. She already has Three Cards totaling 1.5 GBs and does not want to buy more.
So in order to increase the number images the card will hold, do you recommend lowering the resolution OR lowering the image quality by increasing the JPEG compression in the camera settings, for the purposes of printing ? ( obviously not all her images, but she may want to have some for her school yearbook, friends etc ).
This is a question I have asked myself with my own digital cameras, over the years, if i have to shoot JPEG i usually have the settings to MAX resolution and Lowest compression, in case i want to print some.
Also what would you recommend as the lowest resolution setting (in general, with any camera) if you want to print the following sizes?
    4 X 6
    5 X 7
    8 X 10 or US Letter
Thanks in advance, and i realize this is a little off topic.

  • MQ, eSQL and CLOBs (Off Topic)

    Hi,
Apologies for this way off topic post, but I figured someone here may know the answer to this one and save me some time digging / testing.
We're designing a middleware hub using WBIMB (MQ) v5 and have the option of
    a. Sending a message to a JMS Listener that will write an entry in a database via JDBC
    b. Having the broker flow insert the record using a compute node / java node.
If we choose option b my preference would be to use eSQL, but the database table has a CLOB column and I'm not sure whether this is supported.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help,
    Steve

Hello Huffer Many thanks for your prompt reply. I have been doing a bit more research and came across an old spec for a "lenovo" hard-disk (HDD) with 320GB capacity used in numerous ThinkPads. Unfortunately it does not include the X300 model that i have. The full details can be found HERE. The height of the HDD is 7 (SEVEN) mm. I may be paranoid but can you please just confirm that the lenovo X300 ThinkPads (see full details above) with the 320GB HDD really have a height of 9.5mm and so will be able to take the HDD 2.5" with 2TB that I plan to buy. If the height really is only 7m then I have a problem.  Then I think that i will have to go up my idea of increasing the storage space. If you cannot answer the question with 100% certitude then I will have to reopen the laptop and measure the space available but that is a pain since I am new to all this and afraid of damaging the HDD. Thanks. Cheers. Steve.

    Merry Christmas!

Im right there with you Mike. I'm having the same issue. I've looked everywhere for a solution but does not seem to be one. Seems like your local pictures and photo stream copies are one in your iOS 8 devise. Erase the picture from your phone and it's gone from photo stream as well. You can delete a picture via a Mac or PC from you photo stream and it will stay on your iOS 8 device. That is all I have been to find a work around. I suggest using Dropbox like we are. It works great.  All your pictures are automatically up loaded, you can share files with your wife and friends or just share the whole account with your wife. App can be password protected. It's the best solution in my opinion.
Use my link to open your account and we both will get an extra 500mb of storage space!!

  • Question a lil off topic

i have a question that may be a lil off topic from java but i want to put a counter on my web page
i need to know were my perl executable file is and i cant find it it says to type in whereis perl from the unix shell but the server is running iis2 on nt4 and i havent a clue of how to get to the unix shell if thier even is one if anyone knows how tell me or if their is a way to do this in java tell me
and if no one knows its ok cause this is the java forum hehe but i figure someone on heres probably delt with this before
    thanks in advance

If it is on an NT box, you probably don't need the #! line you would need in UNIX as there is probably a file association for .pl or .cgi for the Perl executeable.

  • Off topic question! mA/h rating and expected lief span of coin cell battery

    hi folks
well, thanks for all the help here i got no labview. im just wondering how i can calculate an approximate lifecycle for coin cell batterys on the sensor motes i got here. if i know the average current it draws, say 30mA. and the input voltage (say 3volts), how can i approximate the life span of the device with 3.3v coin cells, i think 220mAh rating.
at the minute all my testing was done when i was sending data blocks so i was always using current ,unless i was in idle mode. so my lifespan was just a couple of hours. i want to know how long the device would last under realistic working conditions, like sending packets of data when required, etc.
sorry that  this is way off topic!
    eric

    Eric,
The simple answer is that it is complex. The ampere-hour rating of a battery is typically based on a fixed discharge, either constant current or constant resistance. The most commmon rating is calculated from the constant current which discharges the battery to a specified voltage over 20 hours. The complexity comes from the fact that batteries do not provide the same amount of charge (current*time product) for different current levels.
Looking at your case: 220 mAh capacity with load of 30 mA and variable duty cycle. If the capacity is based on a 20 hour discharge (coin cells may be rated differently because their typical use is long term slow discharge), the standard discharge rate would be 220/20 = 11 mA. If the capacity were linear with discharge current, the life with your load would be 220/30 = 7.3 hours. As you observed the actual life was shorter. This may have been due to less capacity at higher currents, internal resistance, or your load may require a higher voltage than that at which the capacity rating was specified.
If your duty cycle was reduced to 10% and idle current was negligible, the life span would nominally be 220 mAh / (30 mA * 10%) = 73.3 hours. Depending on the characteristics of the battery and how long the load was on each time, the lifetime might be longer or shorter than that.

  • Audio production education (way off topic)

Hi all, sorry for the off-topic Q but I'm thinking about "formalizing" my audio production learning. Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with Berklee's online courses? It's pro tools heavy, but what one learns in one DAW can be ported to another I imagine.
    Thanks much!

I've taken several online courses with Berklee, and found them to be very good. The only issue you really want to be clear about, is that you have necessary prior knowledge to take the class. The Pre-requisites.
You must already be computer savy. You may need to have a certain background knowledge too. For instance, I was taking an arranging class, and we had to upload homework every 2 days. They recommended using Finale. It might take me 2 hours to do the assignment, but then it took me another 5 to figure out how to use finale, to get the assignment to look right. I ended up using Logic's scoring, which was fine, but the benefit of using Finale would have been, all the other students could have downloaded my assignment, and played in in Finale, and heard it exactly as I did it..
Each subject you take might have a different pre-requisite knowledge.. Some classes really don't much of anything.. Some classes use textbooks, or require CD's, others suggest where you can find free materials to assist with. Most classes you need to do some kind of homework, and upload. Some students had trouble with that and dropped out..
I would say that Berklee online is an excellent experience... It is EXPENSIVE though. The only fault I could point out is the above, prior knowledge that one might need to know to take a course. In my experience, the administration was a little too lax with that, in order to sell you a course.
I'm not sure about taking a pro-tools course, and hoping it will give you a lot of knowledge about using cu-base or Logic.. Yes a lot of concepts will 'port over' to another area.

  • WebAssist Cart help? I know it's off topic but... Could really use some help...

I've got a shopping cart that is working and I'm trying to update the
quantities in inventory by subtracting the quantity ordered from the total
inventory in a table called ITEMS.
I can update a record after a sale in the cart, but right now it is
updating by completely replacing the value of the items in inventory with
the quantity in the checkout cart. So, if there are 800 items, after the
update, there are -1 total in inventory, not 799.
The problem is that I don't know how to coordinate the item(s) in the stored
shopping cart with a call to their ID and quantity in the online database.
Here's what I have so far:

  • Off topic: posting XML/HTML in these forums

How do you post XML to these forums? Encoding the < as > just gets interpreted as a literal, but using straight XML doesn't work because if there's overlap with HTML, the XML gets formatted as HTML. Here's an example -- if you have an XML tag called "s" (< s n a m e = " f o o " > b a r < / s > ), look what happens (because of the strikethrough HTML tag): <s name="foo">bar</s>.
    Sorry to post off-topic!

    Hello red_menace,
Indeed a pre-processing code like yours is always an option for us, but from my point of view, the correct solution is for the discussions' admins to disable this meddlesome formatting feature of the new fora software.
This new feature affects not only new posts but also the existing messages in the fora, that means it has rendered quite a few useful messages totally useless. This is actually serious data loss caused by the thoughtless software. And for what?
After all, these discussions' boards are not chat rooms where people might want some simple input methods for fancy text formattings, but technical support fora where people frequently post programming codes, computer outputs and so forth that have many reserved symbols and notation.
I really wish they may fix this promptly.
    Best regards,
    Hiroto

  • Off topic: Database Unique IDs

    Hi folks,
This is a little off-topic, but I figure that there may be other people out
there whose Forte development would benefit from the discussion.
I am currently building a development framework for our new software
product. As part of that framework I'd like to include the facility for
generating unique, user-invisible, integer database IDs.
Now there is some doubt here that this is actually required and that the
primary key should be whatever the programmer wants it to be, including
    multiple columns if necessary.
I was wondering if anyone can give us some rules-of-thumb regarding
the use of unique IDs as primary keys. Or if someone can point me to
some on-line resources (or even a good book) that can guide us in this
    area.
The arguments I have given for using integer IDs are:
    - Single, integer columns should be faster
    - User invisible integer ID allows editing/duplicates of all user-visible fields
    - Single, integer foreign keys would reduce storage requirements
    - Standardising on integer IDs would allow generic functionality built into
    framework
    - More object-oriented as objects have "built-in" unique identity
I would appreciate any comments people have. We can take this
discussion off-list if that is preferable.

    Hi folks,
This is a little off-topic, but I figure that there may be other people out
there whose Forte development would benefit from the discussion.
Or if someone can point me to
some on-line resources (or even a good book) that can guide us in this
    area.

  • Off topic: Printers

    Off topic: Printers
I'm looking for a good printer that will handle printed DVD labels and print directly DVD.
I've looked at the Epson 380, but it doesn't print type as well as I may need.
    Any suggestions?
I've been using Epsons for years and would like to look at alternative brands.
The $200 price range I'm looking at. I know it is alot to ask for that kind of money, I just can't afford any more
    Dave

Printers are the Demon Seed, the work of Beelzebub. While my Epson R340 will of course print for weeks on end just fine, if I suddenly need to print something urgently, it is 100% guaranteed to print it in purple. Or, the heads will need cleaning, resulting in two hours of listening to "neeeeeeeeh neh-neh-neh-neh-neh neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh neh neh neh'. Or, the DVD's doesn't get drawn into the printer properly, the resulting label is half off the disc, and it's just made a nice coaster.
I broke my last Epson while leaping up and down upon it in an apoplectic rage in such circumstances. Really.
But it seems you are right, we have no option. Finally, Print Shop by Broderbund is probably like a high-tech wunderkind chrome robot when compared to the Official Worst Appplication of All Time, Epson Print CD, which closely resembles a turd.
    Rant rant rant.
