MBP intermittant (broken) wireless with WEP after airport update 2007-003

Question

First, my 24" imac works just fine with the current settings. My MBP hasn't connected to a WEP protected network since the 2007-003 airport update (or maybe 10.4.9, I installed it at the same time).
Checking the console while it's trying to connect:

over and over again until:
Jun 22 21:09:42 nates-computer /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Resources/airport: Error: WirelessAssociate2() = 88001006 for network Nate's Wireless Network. The operation timed out.
The airport icon is turning on while this is happening, then reads the SSID, then disconnects, over and over again.
The keychain was broken after the last update and so was ssh (again!). Those are fixed. But this wireless issue really is a problem for me. The latests updates with 10.4.10 didn't do anything to help out.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Reinstalling OS X from the install DVDs restored wireless connectivity. Then installing software updates didn't seem to break the wireless, or all of the dictionary entries.
