MBP screen graphics failure

I am experiencing intrmittent screen failure on my 3 1/2 yr old MBP (1440 x  900)
I close a window and the area behind it is 'noise, garbage
The red, yellow and green buttons at the top leftsuddenly are colourless noise in a rctanglular shpe
Windows sometimes have a 1.2 in of noise surrounding them that moves with the window
The menu bar will sometimes be B&W noise, wither the top half or all of it.
Refreshing windows often returns all of these issues back to normal.
At the moment all is fine ... started about a month ago
may have happened after Mavericks install, didn't notice though but nothing else has changed.
MBP Mid 2010, 8 GB memory (2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and Intel HD Graphics
Is the graphics card failing or more likely memory failing or ???
Cheers,
Dave

That model has a program in effect:

  • Graphic failure with Intel Graphics

    Hi!
I got my new MBP 15" i7 two weeks ago and installed all updates that were available.
I have noticed that if I watch movies in fullscreen mode with the Intel gfxCard and a Growl message appears or if I move my mouse cursor to the hidden dock some graphic failures show up:
    http://img.skitch.com/20100904-by9mfjq6uantsn752ftjc9sg1b.jpg
This also happens in screensaver if any popup (growl...) appears.
    Thanks a lot!
    StonerL

Are you forcing the computer to stay on the intel graphics chip with a program (like gfxCardStatus)?
I have the same computer, but for anything other than simple internet browsing my computer automatically switches to the dedicated nVidia card. As soon as I put up a full screen video or even an app like MS Word it switches cards.

  • Using Cinema Display with mid-2010 MBP, post-Yosemite:  corrupted MBP screen

For a couple years I've been using a 27" Cinema Display attached to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15".  The dual-display setup works great for my home setup.
However, since upgrading to Yosemite, the MBP display often completely corrupts and reverts to complete gibberish, with fragments of the UI and desktop littered all about the screen.  Dragging a window over to that screen usually "redraws" it sufficiently enough to keep working, but soon the problem re-appears.  The screen of the CInema Display (my main working area) never corrupts, only the MBP screen.
My setup worked great in Mavericks, but something in Yosemite isn't driving both displays properly.  Can anything be done, aside from downgrading to Mavericks?
    Andy

I am having this exact same problem.  2010 iMac with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB.  I have it hooked to a 30" display through a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter.  The 30" is fine, but I have graphical corruption constantly on the main iMac screen.
This all started as soon as I updated to Yosemite a couple days ago.

My late 2011 15 inch mbp screen shuts down and don't turn on. Sometimes goes down after it gets in the sleep mode but another times it goes down when i'm working on it. The battery lights and the magsafe light still work but the screen doesn't respond, i have to shut down the computer and only after a couple of tries to turn it on i the screen wakes up. Also, sometimes when i turn it on the screen gets fragmented, like in the image. Does anyone have any solution? thanks.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Problems waking MBP screen when connected to ext. monitor

Whenever the screen is closed and it goes to sleep (still connected to ext monitor) then its woken by opening the lid everything will default over to the ext. monitor and the MBP screen will be blank. Unpluging and repluging gets it back but then have to move the documents around again. Is there just a setting I'm missing for this? I've looked through all the system pref. No usb/BT keyboards, just a BT mouse and it gets disconnected on sleep.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

A Bluetooth device disconnect will often cause a separate and unwanted wake-up event. I'm guessing that might be happening here. After the lid goes down and the Mac sleeps, shortly after that the BT disconnect causes the Mac to wake again and, with the lid down, only the external screen is activated and hence all the windows jump to the external screen. Next time you wake by lifting the lid, you see all the windows have moved to the external display.
What I recommend trying is powering off the BT mouse prior to putting the Mac to sleep. You should get a message that the BT mouse has disconnected. Then close the lid on the MBP. See if that fixes the issue.

    Hi there,
Did you ever resolve this problem? I am new to the Fullscreen API but I am writing a complicated interactive screensaver. It works really well on Windows XP but there is terrible startup flicker on OS X. My own graphics is repeatedly overdrawn with a blank white screen, about four or five times over a few seconds, then finally the window starts behaving (nearly) as expected. The same drawing code works well in a windowed version on OS X.
    Anyone else have this problem?

My 17 in MBP screen occasionally "sparkles", why is this happening? Is something wrong with my Mac?

Nobody here could say why it's happening, but it's possible there is a hardware defect.  I suggest making an appt. at the Genius Bar.

  • Faulty screen graphic with keyboard volume adjustment

I have the HP TouchSmart 610-1030y and when I press the volume control buttons on the keyboard, instead of the graphic showing the volume control on the screen, all I get is a blank white box. The volume adjustment does work, it's just the screen graphic that is faulty. What drivers or software can I try re-installing to fix this? Pressing the volume control buttons on the side of the monitor does the same thing. Using Windows 7 64-bit. Thank you.
    This question was solved.

Keyboard, On Screen Display, Buttons software is what generates the volume graphics, if you head in that direction you should resolve it.

  • HT5455 Is It normal that my premium category 15" retina MBPs screen has ghosting issues, then I get declined from screen replacement?

Is It normal that my premium category 15" retina MBPs screen has ghosting issues, and I get declined from screen replacement?
I have purchased this hardware in Budapest for approximately 3000 usd. I was a bit shocked to see screen ghosting after a few days of use. The problem was getting worse but because I am a design consultant working mainly on my Mac I couldnt take a week off to leave It at an Apple service station.
Last week I was surprised to receive the information from the local Apple repair shop in Germany that my retina MBP that I bought 13 months ago was declined from screen replacement by Apple.
Considering the price of the product I find It unacceptable that I need to work on a defective product and see shadows every time I leave an Illustrator or InDesign window open for a short period of time.
Is there any way to resolve this issue? I wouldnt like to pay another 800 dollars just to replace a component on my defective Apple product.

Contact Apple Support directly.  In Germany the Expresslane or this number
0800 6645 451 will allow you to speak directly to someone from Apple.    Explain your situation.   Mind you, AppleCare and issues with Apple products like this have to occur without any user accidents or user installed parts to ensure that Apple will cover you.  If there was a user accident or installed part, you may be turned down.  If you have the original Apple parts, and did the installation yourself, replace it with the original parts very carefully following the directions on http://www.ifixit.com/ unless you can afford an authorized service provider to do it for you.  Since we don't speak for Apple here, being end users like yourself, that's why I say "may", as I've seen Apple handle these things on a case by case basis.  So hopefully you don't have any obvious damage that looks like it is user caused.   Good luck!

  • MBP Screen goes black and then restores.  NVIDIA graphics card issue?

    I've got a mid-2007 MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, running 10.6.2.
Over the past couple of days I am having random losses of video screen. I will be on a webpage, doing nothing with it, and the screen will go momentarily black. It normally lasts for a few seconds, then restores. Nothing I do seems to affect the blacking out or the restoration.
I have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card.
Any suggestions / input on whether I am experiencing the failure? FWIW, computer is still under Applecare.
    Thanks

    See this KB article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
I have similar issues with my MBP. However there is also a widespread issue on the forums in which the trackpad and keyboard stops responding, and it may be difficult to tell if the problem is loss of video or loss of input ability when the display goes to sleep automatically. I'm currently in this boat. I'm not quite sure if I have a video problem of if this is the issue with the trackpad/keyboard connection.
The video card issue appears that apple will pay for out of warranty but they are not addressing the widespread problem with trackpad and keyboard loss of function and if you are out of warranty you are out of luck.

  • Graphics Card and MBP Screen!!

As you will already know, the MacBook Pro has a 256MB graphics card by nVidia.
Tis graphics card is HD (what nVidia say) so does that mean the screen can show that HD quality and can handle HD footage from Cams?
    Thanks In advance
    TSnail

Nowadays, any computer with a dual-core processor will be able to play HD-quality video contents.Whether or not it is displayed at its native resolution(1920 x 1080),simply depends on the resolution of the screen.
For 15-inch MBP,the video will be scaled down according to its aspect ratio since the screen's resolution is 1440 x 900.
For 17-inch MBP,unless you have the Hi-resolution screen, the video will also be scaled down as well.
Traditionally, all rendering processes regarding HD video are handled by the CPU instead of the GPU "graphics card".So,what NVidia meant by mentioning HD repeatedly is its latest GeForce 8000 series cards are able to fully take over the task of rendering HD contents to reduce workloads on CPU and therefore allowing the CPU to perform other non-graphics related task.

  • MBP screen failures

I live in Mexico and i´ve bought my MBP with a certified supplier,
at the 26th day I noticed problems with the screen, first there were
complete window distortion, so I went to the Apple Service and at
the end of the diagnosis they didn´t find any problem.
But since then I´ve been using the MBP with minor issues
of the screen distortion. I want to know what can I do for solve
this problem, because for me it´s just a waste of time going to
the service and I have no answer of what´s the problem with
the equipment and I have no replacement.

    so i made some progress
i did the zeroing of the drive, did a repair from disk utility, and ran apple hardware test right before installing, went to the install, did the first time install (as i suspected you can't do an archive and install on a clean disk... there is nothing to archive) and sat through the installation, it was successful.
reboot, starts up to apple logo and little spinny thing under it, and i go to sleep.
wake up in the morning to a machine sitting at a grey screen doing nothing, close it, let it go to sleep, open it back up, starts a process that seems as if it might be a verification process, here are the details:
i have a cursor, if the cursor is showing the hard drive sounds like it is seeking and writing things for about two seconds, then the beach ball shows up and it starts a process of between 10 and 20 half second seeks, and then back to the cursor and some more writing
the interesting thing about this stage (which as been going on for about 3.5 hours now) is that all of the hardware stuff works, backlit keyboard works with the sensors and the brightness keys, the screen brightness works, sound works, all these things show the on screen os x icons too. eject works, the process does the same thing with and without the leopard disk, also closing it puts it to sleep and when i open it back up it just keeps on chugging
anyone had anything like this where waiting worked?
i'm going to a meeting at 5 and if i come back and it's not done i'm going to go to the apple store with it.
    thanks in advance for help
    mark
