MBP  Sluggish and Indecisive

My Macbook Pro is from mid 2010, with a 2.66 ghz processor, 4gb memory, and  OS X 10.9.5 maverick software. I have 115.6 GB free out of 319.21 gb of storage. My computer has functioned perfectly since I got it but during the last 2 months has become slower and developed all sorts of problems.
My first concern is that whenever I am using my computer, the fans never shut off. I understand that watching movies or Youtube usually activates the fans, but even if only one program like Word is open, the fans are constantly humming. Second, my computer has frozen about 8 times in the last month which I feel is pretty abnormal. I don't typically have a bunch of programs running at the same time, but my computer  has frozen just trying to open a 6 page text pdf. I use my computer pretty average stuff  I'm in grad school so the programs I use include Word, Adobe Acrobat, Xcel, Powerpoint and occasionally the adobe creative suites.  I never have 2 major programs operating at the same time like Adobe Bridge and Photoshop because my computer will just freeze. My third concern is that my computer likes to wait and consider opening programs or files. I click on a pdf or word document and then wait to see if my computer feels like opening it. I went to the Apple Store about a month ago concerned that a virus was affecting my computer but they said my laptop was fine.
When I open Activity Monitor, it generally doesn't show that my system is tapped. A typical load profile like i have right now says:
Physical Memory: 4gb
Memory Used: 3.52 gb
Virtual Memory: 4.21 gb
Memory pressure: green
CPU Idle: 90.88%
I'm finishing up my last 6 months of grad school, after which I can deal with getting a new computer but for the time being what are some temporary solutions that I can use?  I have invested in a Lacie external hard drive and backup  regularly.  I admit that the majority of storage of my computer is taken up by 133.47 gb of photos, would it help for me to move all my photo files to an external hard drive?  Would that even make a difference considering my computer freezes without any photo files or programs being open? I'm currently  writing my master's dissertation and I'm willing to try anything to ensure that my laptop will be able to handle a 200 page word document without crashing. I'd appreciate any suggestions or help!

  • What is the ideal resolution combo for MBP 13" and Projector?

In our school district we are using 13" MacBook Pro's (OS X 10.7 Lion) and external epson projectors, projecting to a Promethean Smart Board. The default resolution for a MBP is 1280X800, that is a no brainer. Now everything I've been reading says that projectors like to be on 1024X768. When we do that the projector resolution dictates that resolution to the MBP screen and the MBP screen is of course distorted. They don't play nice when trying to set independent settings. We've found that 1280X800 for MBP and 1280X960 for the projector works best. When set at these settings and you plug and unplug the VGA adapter the settings on the MBP hold to 1280X800. But we have to keep calibrating the Promethean Smart Board though inbetween plugging and unplugging the VGA adapter's. Any ideas?

Try setting up the projector at 1024x768 as it calls for, but you want to use the best image. This might require a resolution reset as you are dealing with 3 different viewing sources. (ahh, if only they would come up with a standard.
You can try a pram reset with everything up and running, this can sometimes correct distortions.
    NVPRAM reset:
Power down the mac, power it back up, before the start up chime, press and hold the following keys:
option, command,P,R,(no commas) and continue to hold these keys till you hear the start chime 2 times. See what you have. You might have to reboot.
Also you can try connecting the projector, fire up the mac then the projector, it might auto-detect. You can try system preferences click detect displays,
As for the smart board, you would have to contact the manufacturer for details.
I know I have not offered much here, but it's worth a try, can't hurt anything.
Also, if you plan to contact the Community in the future, please ammend your profile with the model and OS you are using, as it could help you get more info.
Does your IT person have  stuff locked out? Most school districts have many of the useful tools locked out.
The reason I know this is my wife is a school teacher, and we end up doing most of her multi media stuff on one of our personal computers, because of the lock down imposed on the entire staff.
I hope there is something that might help you here. If not get your IT person to make it happen.(If they can)
    Good luck

  • I am having problems downloading files from the web. After a number of files are downloaded, the system become sluggish, and then hangs. I traced the problem to the download history file: downloads.sqlite.

After downloading a number of 1.0 MB files, the system became very sluggish, and I started to get lots of (Not Responding) messages when trying to download or just use Firefox for browsing. Using Performance Monitor, I observed that the Firefox executable was growing larger and larger - up to as large as 1.2 GB on a system with 2.0 GB memory. Page faults were off the chart.
Looking for a similar problem, I found one that discussed the downloads.sqlite file becoming corrupted. I first noticed that this file was over 600 MB in size, so I deleted it. I then downloaded additional files, and observed that the new downloads.sqlite file would increase in size by about 150% of the size of each file that was downloaded. Once it would get up to 500 MB in size, the system started slowing down again.
I don't know the purpose of this file, but it appears that it keeps a full copy of every file downloaded, which may be the function of a download history file, but it does not seem correct that the file should grow in size without limit, and thus impact the system.
I would also appear that the Firefox executable is trying to read the entire contents of this file each time a new file is downloaded, which does not seem right.
Temporary fix is to periodically delete the downloads.sqlite file when it gets too large and starts impacting performance.. Apparently it is smart enough to open a new file if the old one is not found. I am not sure what the correct behavior for this file should be. Apparently is does not re-initialize when a new Firefox session is initiated.
Please feel free to contact me if more information is desired. I'm not sure what details you might need to troubleshoot this type of problem.

Hi Katy, and a warm welcome to the forums!
What is the exact name of the file?
    Is it aim.bin?
Which requires either Stuffit Expander, or the Unarchiver to deflate.

  • How do I connect a new Thunderbolt MBP to and old 23" HD Cinema Display ADC port

A question Im sure many have asked but I cant find a straight forward answer.
I simply will be buying a new thunderbolt MBP 15 and NEED to connect it an old 23" Apple Cinema Display that uses the old ADC connector.
Can I do it and if so how? I realise theres a potential under powering issue?
    Thanks

    Hello Sigh
I am sure there is no way to get your ADC connector display to function with your new Mac Book Pro.
I tried everying I could and gave up and purchased a 24" Apple refurbbished Cinema Display for $599 + tax on 4/27/2011. The Apple part number is FBXXXXL/A, Model A1287.
Gave my  year 2002 ADC 22" display to a friend.

Re: How do I connect a new Thunderbolt MBP to and old 23" HD Cinema Display ADC port Jul 8, 2011 4:58 PM (in response to Russy47)
Got my new MBP 2011 today. Hooked it up to my 23" Apple Cinema Display fine, using the Apple DVI to ADC converter > Mini Display port adaptors. I could then mirror display, but only at 1440 x 900 resolution.
My dream is to have it like my old laptop--I mostly leave it shut, and main display is on the Cinema Display. So far, if I close the laptop lid on my new MBP, display shuts off. Also, can't get it to bump up the resolution to 1920.
    Sigh.

  • How can I get ilife (iphoto/imovie) on my Used Retina ... Previously purchased new mbp 17 and have an Imac 27....

Well I just purchased another Retina mbp 15 and this ones a keeper (sold 2 before this was just looking for a mint one).  Now my issue is I cant get ilife (in particular imovie and iphoto) without purchasing it and I dont want to do that.... yet.
I did purchase a brand new mbp 17 in 2010 but not sure if I registered it or logged into the app store. Dont think I did because I dont see any downloads available in the app store.
I have an imac 27 Im using right now and I dug up the appllications cd it came with.
    My questions are:
How can I install ilife or any of the apps without buying them?
Are the applications one use only for the specific machines?
Is there any way to use the resource dvd to install onto my retina ?
(regarding this I have tried using remote disc and my retina wont show anything under remote disc when the cd is in my ima )
ANy input or help is appreciated. I did enjoy using imove and iphoto alot and would like to have them again.

I appreciate the replies. Grant if I have an Imac and the apps on the cd then what you are saying is it should be tied to my apple id and therefore I should be able to install them on my new macbook?
I dont recall when I bought my mbp 17 if it had a cd and back then it was my first mac.. dont think there was an app store just itunes. It isnt tied to my account but shouldnt it be? I guess the person who bought that 17 from me got a free bundle :/
Its not a matter of $30 I understand that fully. Its just its $30 wasted if I am able to get it.
What im confused about (and I dont care to argue apples reasoning for it) is tying ilife to 'that Mac alone" is just dumb when a new owner of a machine cant install it and has to buy it again. that means the original owner keeps the apps for any machine he wishes and it isnt for the machine.
I think im confusing myself and possibly answered my own question but ill leave it lol.

  • Lightroom 5 sluggish and unstable (esp. book module)

I recently downloaded a trial of Lightroom 5 (then updated to 5.2) in order to evaluate its photo book creation capabilites. Apart from the program being sluggish in use (on an Intel Q6600 CPU running Win 7 Pro 32-bit with 4GB RAM and an SSD boot drive), the process went fairly well up until the time where I uploaded the book to Blurb.
The program kept crashing during the render of the 102-page book (also during Export to PDF render, despite lowering the PDF driver’s resolution settings as advised in the Readme file). There was no pattern to when it crashed; I removed tags, star ratings, set and reset background colour, etc. but to no avail as had been suggested on various forums (sometimes by Adobe support). Then one time (out of around 30), it completed the job. I monitored RAM usage, disc space and CPU temperature and all were absolutely fine. My machine runs cool and stable. When this kept happening, a quick Google revealed numerous people having the same problem, with Adobe conceding this.
I really like Lightroom and what it does; however, I'm struggling to justify spending  money on a product which is sluggish and unstable.
I sincerely hope that Adobe will address these issues soon, but I'm not convinced they know what's causing them. Lightroom 5.2 didn’t seem to fix any of them and I find it difficult to understand how such a buggy product made it out the door of Adobe’s offices.
I wonder how widespread this is. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Yes! I have just find it hopeless, and contacting customer care on the matter is virtually impossible.

  • Late 2010 iMac Running Sluggish and Loud-PLS HELP

I have only found one or two threads relating to my specific problem, and I still need more help. Anyone's help (...Linc Davis) would be very much appreciated.
First off, let me tell you what I am running.
Late 2010 model iMac (3.2 GHz intel core). OSX Snow Lion 10.6.8. 4GB Ram.  1TB hard drive (less than half full)
Here is where I have isolated the problem so far.
-Switching between applications is often very sluggish and laggy. It takes up to 10 seconds sometimes to open an appplication.
-Playing audio files with either itunes or preview. Quite often a song will stall for up to 5 or more seconds before playing again
-NOTE occasionally the audio actually cut out for five seconds and then start again later on in the song as opposed to simply stalling.
-Typing in search bars, this action is often sluggish and laggy as well.
-Clicking on icons and links. Example, at the start up window when I clicked on my user account it took about three seconds to bring up the username box
-Fan is working very loudly right from startup, and not slowing down at all.
Here are the solutions I have tried to no avail.
-Ran disk utility, everything came up as ok
-monitered my CPU usage with various problem causing applications. The RAM usage is fine and should be working great, I almost always have more than half freed up RAM
-I replaced the thermal cream around the hard drive because it was over heating a bunch and I also gave it a good clean. This fixed the over heating problem but the laggin still occurs.
    -SMC reset (twice). no change.
I don't know what to do next, somebody please help. Do I have any malware? Is my harddrive failing?
p.s. I'm pretty noob to the intricacies of going deep into computers, but I can follow steps and figure out what's going on easy enough.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Difficulty using a projector. I have a MBP 17" and am running 10.6.8. Often I need to make a Powerpoint or other presentation  at a client and I want to connect my computer to their projector. Either it won't display on the projector at all. Once it displayed but the presentation mode was on the big screen and the presentation I wanted to show was on my MBP screen. I have the adapter( white ones) to attached to the projector cables.  I am so frsutrated...it looks so silly not to have a computer work during a presentation..
Another problem one the rare occasion that it shows on the screen is that the presentation does show just my desk top.  Any ideas?
    Thanks !

You often have to turn off Mirroring to be able to set the second "screen"s resolution to something reasonable. When you do, the two screens become an "Exceeded Desktop" joined along one edge, and the Arrange pane in displays prefs can allow you to specify what edge. Initially, it will show a vacant extension of the built-in screen's desktop.
The mouse moves freely across that shared edge, and can allow you to drag the presentation window across to the the projector screen and re-size it to fit.

  • Resolution, MBP 13" and MBA 13"

In considering the MBP 13" and the MBA 13" as a portable extension of my iMac 27", I have pretty much decided on the MBA now.
The final area I want to be clear on is in the resolution of the display and how much of an image I can see, and how much scrolling I will need to do.
As the system will not be not my only computer, I guess a bit of scrolling while on vacation won't hurt a lot!
As far as I can see, the attached picture shows how much of a picture I can see on my iMac, and then how much at full size will be visible on each of the MBA and MBP. The MBA is the larger rectangle.
The picture seems to suggest the 'larger' display given by the MBA would be the option to go for. Am I missing something here?

    Thanks ssls6,
I do tend to agree. Thanks.
    Hi Ralph
I'm panicking really at the possibility of buying a computer that can't be upgraded! However, the Air has the extreme portability that I think I need.
As long as I can sensibly use the system when away from my desk, it is simply convenience really.
I'm looking to go for 8GB RAM on the system but would stick with the slow processor.
I think it will do the job nicely, but the price makes me want to be absolutely sure.
I'll take some files to the Apple Center and sit at one for an extended period and see how it goes. If I then order the system online, I will have 14 days from delivery to really test it, while retaining the option to return it if it just doesn't work for me.
    Thanks for your advice.

Original OSX 10.5.6 and app dvd's (that came w/MBP) lost, and have recv'd replacement dvd from Apple. Once hard drive is erased and new OS w/dvd instl'd, how do I insure all applications bundle - that came with MBP - will reinstall?

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

  • How I can keep my MBP nice and speedy?

I finally jumped out of my Windows and into a Mac. I have used a Macbook at work for 3 years with very little trouble. I am an educator who lost my job right after I invested in a Macbook Pro and it seems to FREEZE UP frequently. I have seen the "spinning rainbow wheel of death" more times than I can recall. I have had the machine exactly 1 month.
Someone mentioned to me that it may be my Office 2008; the scripts don't seem to play nicely. I am at a loss. I invested in this because I wanted less drama than my "Dell from ****."
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can keep my MBP nice and speedy?
Is there a limit to how many applications I should have on the dock?
Should I keep everything off of the desktop?
I am also a web developer and I have been using:
    adobe CS4 web suite.
    Captivate
    Second Life
    Firefox (With many plug-ins)
    MAMP Pro
    ITUNES
    Office 2008
    Imovie
    Frequently.
I don't turn it off everyday.
    My system is as follows:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro6,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core i5
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 4.8 GT/s
Maybe I can get some pointers to minimize this drama, so before I start screaming at Apple, I thought that I would check with my peers in this wonderful online community.
I am open to technical advice and personal philosophy.
Thank you for your help in advance!

Personally, I'd try using Onyx, if that doesn't help, just put your Ma OSX Install DVD inside, boot from it and install the OS again. All files and settings will be left intact (don't forget to update your system after installing it).
Make sure you have the latest Office version installed, as earlier versions are known to disable some system tasks, therefore making OSX unstable.

  • I bought a MBP 13 and I got the £70 App Voucher for being a student, I know want to return the MBP how can I do that? can I just pay the £70 for the app store voucher or what do i need to do? MacBook

If you have redeemed the voucher for something separate from the computer, then it's a non-issue. If you redeemed it as a price reduction for the computer, then they will return only what you paid less the coupon.

  • New iMac wakes from sleep sluggishly and requires password despite preference setting

My new iMac (Core i7) wakes from sleep very sluggishly and it requires a password despite the fact that I have de-selected this option in Preferences.
I have a new iMac.  I used Migration Assistant to move everything from my older Mac Pro, which was running Lion.  Under the Secucrity settings in Preferences, I de-selected "Require Password."
I use a bluetooth mouse and wireless keyboard.  Typically I click the mouse to wake up my Mac.  The screen comes to life and the cursor moves with the mouse, but...how can I explain this?  When I move the mouse in this situation, the cursor paints a gray swath over the desktop screen.  It looks like I am using a paint program.
After clicking the mouse repeatedly the computer becomes responsive and the password entry screen appears--most of the time.  I have tried to set it up so a password is not required, but usually I get this screen.  SOMETIMES, it behaves correctly--say one-fourth of the time.
Another problem...  When I shut the iMac off and then back on, it does not always link to my Apple bluetooth mouse.  I have to connect a USB mouse and re-link the wireless mouse.
I wonder if this is a software/OS issue.  My old Mac Pro had similar wake-up issues, and I wonder if Migration Assistant transferred them to my new machine.
Your thoughts and great ideas are appreciated.

I too am having trouble with my bluetooth mouse after upgrading to 10.7.2 and the associated iOS 5 upgrades.  The mouse keeps losing its connection.  I've turned bluetooth off, trashed the preferences, rebooted and repaired both the keyboard and mouse but the mouse keeping dropping out.  Keyboard seems ok.  Anyone have any ideas?

  • MBP Retina and USB

    Hi Everyone,
Managed to get my hands on a MBP-R 2.6/8/512, last weekend, and i must say it appears to be a great machine. However i do appear to have an issue with one of the USB ports and i wondered if anyone else had noticed anything similar, and/or has any advise??
    The issue is,
The port on the left hand side, appears to mount my iphone ok, and randomly unmounts then remounts it. It also appears to do the same with some of my flash drives, but not all of them. This is annoying especially if my iphone is updating / restoring. My usb superdrive does not appear to be affected on this port, and as previously mentioned some of my flash drives are ok??!!
The port on the right hand side however appears to be fine, everything appears to work 100% with no issues, including my iphone??!!
MAC OSX 10.7.4 (This includes the current 2012 1.0 update which i re-applied last night just in case)
Any advise would be much appreciated,
    Mark

I got say I have exactly the same issue! I have a $2199 Retina Macbook pro. I bought it on June 26th in a reseller. The left side USB doesn't work for my Samsung Galaxy S(Android phone). Everything is right on my cell phone but just nothing show in my MBP. The right side USB is perfect. Can you contact me let's discuss how to deal with this? I called tech support last night for over 1 hour. Tried different kinds of solution ( Reset PRAM and others) but they didn't work at all. The tech support suggest me to get my MBP replaced and he will give me an mail showing that apple decide to do this(Because I bought it in a reseller). Actually he didn't send me that email so I call tech support again. The manager told me they need talk to the engineers with this issue and will reply me in 4 days.
