Measuring Performance of Storage Systems

Hi there
I know, measuring performance of storage systems with benchmarking tools is nothing compared to realworld scenarios, but they give a nice overview in test environments.
Under Windows there is a de-facto standard called IOMeter, which contains the traffic generator (dynamo) and the graphical test suite IOMeter.
It seems that the dynamo part is available for Mac OS X, but only for the PPC architecture (funny, as IOMeter was originally developed by Intel), and the graphical part is available for windows only.
I've seen sites on the Apple HP where they said, they have tested the xraid with IOMeter on a Intel XEON. Does anyone know how they did this, as IOMeter is not really available for Mac OS X on Intel ....
Are there any comparable tools, i.e. a traffic pattern generator and an analzer? Maybe one can use dtrace / Instruments fur the analyzer part, but what to use for the generator?
I need stuff more specific than the activity monitor, etc. as I need to define different block sizes, sequential / random rads / writes and their balance, etc. namely, evenrything IOMeter can do. I can't believe there is nothing out there running on Mac OS X Intel ......

are there generel advantages or disadvantages using such storage systems?
I would be happy if somebody could talk about his experience using such systems.
Is there better/less performance with Oracle Databases? Better/less Security for my Data instead of using a local raid 5/1+0 for example? Or anything else I should now before using such a storage system.
What type of storage are you using? What type of disks would be the best (scsi/fata) ?

Greate to meet another DBA in forum.The big problem we will face is SQL Tune.
Nothing much Diffnt supporting SAP.SAP PRovided some ready made tools to monitor and to solve.Reg tuning still we can follow same methoda but with approval from SAP or by ref SAP notes.Which u can find at service market place.
You can find some PDfs in sap market place and sdn.Which are ex'ly for DBas.
Reg Growth rate you can have a look on sap transactions and there are some notes also.I dont think there is specific Book or Doc which will say Dos and donts.
Performance we used to follow same methoda as a Dbas with ref of sap notes and support for any side effects.
let me know if are in need of any specific info

I am an IT manager, managing two solutions: "SCM" & "WMS (Warehouse Management System)", and there is a team for each solution.
DBA staff are involved, almost, with everything (database administration, handling system/application performance & stability, Application support, creating & automating reports for all levels, monitoring interfaces issues, troubleshooting, handling investigations for operations/management/business/research/system issues ...etc.)
Its not easy to identify their KPI(s) and the additional responsibilities.

If you know some common KPI(s) that have been used before, I really appreciate if you can share them with me, so I can evaluate my team properly.

Just a comment that while your Subject says "DBA", the job responsibilities include many other things which are outside the definition of a DBA role, eg Application support, creating "reports" for "all" levels, troubleshooting "business" issues, etc
So what does "all" levels mean? Does that mean reports from the Application? or just the technical aspects of database administration like I/O, memory, latches etc. What does troubleshooting "business" issues mean? Does that mean identifying why the accounting books don't balance?
I understand that while the DBA role can be clearly defined in theory (Oracle Database Administrator's Guide - Task of a DBA), in practice many organizations, especially the smaller ones, are closer to what you have described. In such cases, the approach I'm familiar with has been to define as much as practicable the primary and secondary responsibilities of each position, and define the KPIs for the primary and make rather vague statements for the secondary role(s).

So what does "all" levels mean?Answer: Application Reports go to all level of management, from department managers to senior mgmt and directors.
It includes,
- Productivity measurements.
- Identifying some of business requirements.
- Creating/Building estimates for any CR.
- Should be involved with warehouse expansions plans.
- Reporting critical operations & inventory activities.
- Building interactive reports.
- Cost allocation, ... etc.
Then the normal DBA comes which includes I/O, memory, DB performance, application & DB users ... etc.
You are right: I can take their primary responsibilities to define their KPIs and leave secondary responsibilities on vague statements for the secondary role(s), so, I can evaluate them according to the primary part and leave the secondary part for them to compete on it.

I have an alert message in disc utility. Error: storage system verify or repair failed. Problems were found with the partitian map which might prevent booting.

While running verify disc in disc utility on 251 GB SSD SM256c Media I came up with this message: Alert system verify or repair failed. In the descriptions box of history it said, problems were found with the partitions map which might prevent booting. This is followed by a message in red reading, Error: Storage system verify or repair failed. At the time I was down loading raw pictures off my camera through a card reader across my computer to a relatively new 2TB Western Digital portable hard drive. after about 13 to 15 pictures downloaded that drive faileded. My Mac Book Air works fine, but i get this message now everytime I run disc verify on this disc. The Macintosh HD checks out fine.

According to your description, your snapshot replication job fails and you come across the error related to TCP Provider. Based on my research, the issue could occur as the following two situations.
1. OS runs out of memory for TCP buffers. When people use the two switch: the /PAE switch in the c:\boot.ini file and the /3gb switch in the boot.ini file. If the applications require many OS resources, such as by opening many TCP connections, this can cause
the OS to run out of memory for resources like TCP buffers.
2.OS runs out of available TCP “ephemeral” ports. When the client machine is opening many TCP connections and is running Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or any earlier version of Windows, it may run out of TCP “ephemeral” ports.
To work around the issue, please follow the two solutions as below.
1.Remove the /3gb switch from c:\boot.ini. The root problem in this case is memory pressure on the OS, so removing the /3gb switch will give more memory to the OS and will alleviate this problem.
2.Make more ephemeral ports available following the steps in the article:

HT1782 storage system fail or repair failed

When I use the disk utility, I click on the first volume which reads ST9500325ASG, it gives me a message "storage system fail or repair failed".
When I click on the disk below which reads Macintosh HD. It says the volume 2FE etc.....appears to be ok. The volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok.
Why the error message on the first? Also I did encrypt the volumen.

The top-level item, ST9500325ASG, is the disk. The items below are that disk's volumes/partitions. You'll get different results selecting each. Step one is to boot with your SL install disk, launch Disk Utility, select the disk, and repair it. You might turn off FileVault before proceeding. i don't use it, so can't address any issues with it.

Storage system verify or repair failed,cannot download system updates,in ColorSynk found 4 bad profiles, in ITunes I still see my old Apple ID. What I can to do ,please identify it for me.

I have changed my Apple ID and may be anything wrong did with Disk Utility.
So , I could not download system updates by normal way and downloaded them from Apple site via Folx and have them installed thus.
I have tried check out condition of Toshiba disk and got messages of errors.

2011 macbook pro OSX maverick, error: storage system verify or repair failed

My 2011 Macbook pro which came with Lion but now upgraded to Maverick 10.9.5 has just crashed. It will start up in recovery mode but when I've gone to the apple logo to start up from disk, it shows the disk but doesn't start up from it I just get a grey screen.
I'ved tried to verify and repair the disk and get message: 'The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partitions file system'
I also get: error, storage system verify or repair failed.
S.M.A.R.T staus is verified
None of the key commands for start up seem to work, ie - option - shift - command P,R etc.
I can't re-install operating system as it is an older version, ie Lion and have updated to Maverick via APP store so no way of re-installing OSX.
Any ideas???

My MBP frooze a couple times yesterday; I loaded Disk Utillity and with the top level "122.33 GB APPLE SSD" selected I tried both "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk." I get a pop up that says, "Alert: Storage system verify or repair failed." On the detailed section it states: "Problems were found with the parition map which might prevent booting. (In red letters) Error: Storage system verify or repair failed." When I select "Macintosh HD," I encounter no problems with Repairs or Verify Disks/Disk Permissions. I have always been able to select both and do the Verify/Repair options and haven't had any errors. I am running Lion and do have encrytption enabled. When I boot in recovery mode, I am able to Verify and Repair Disks on the "122.33 GB APPLE SSD" level without any problems. Only when I boot normally and attempt to Verify or Repair the top level. I am thinking its an encryption related error and not actually an issue. Any thoughts?

In Lion Disk Utiity on First Aid if I choose 500HD and repair disk In red it states alert storage system verify or repair failed disk permissions are greyed out that means they can not be clicked.
If I choose Mountain lion (I am booted in Lion) it will repair permissions and veryfy and repair disk.
If I choose Lion (I am booted in Lion) it will verify and repair permissions but only verify disk. NOT repair !
( it is said it can not repair itself so we need to be booted into lion recovery disk disk utilities)
If I choose Snow leopard (I am booted in Lion) it will verify and repair permissions and verify and repair disk.
In Mountain lion the partition map or set up is strange.

And on Mountain lion and lion on sub volume only FirstAid and Partition is shown not erase or restore !
In Snow leopard disk utility Mountain lion and lion shows as incompatable so can even partitioned or repaired.
When partitioning and installing 3 OSX's on 1 HD the partition table changes with Mountain lion and Lion.
And if you have Vile fault turned on you can not access the Mountain lion and lion repair permissions and repair disk ,also can not access the recovery disk when booting using options.
That means you have to turn Vilefault or Gate keeper off.
Apple Japan said it does not support more than one OS per HD !
It is a resl mess they do not fix these things and show photes and explanations of different scenrios on disk utility.
we want to use all our OSX/s on the same machine because many applications do not work on different platforms.
They should work out a solution when bring out new OS

What are the best storage systems to archive inactive (but still used) apps and files?

What are the best storage systems to archive inactive (but still used) apps and files of all types? I already have a Time Casule which I back up on and I'm needing to create more space in my flash drive in my Mac Pro, so I need another external storage system I can use to archive all that I don't currently need. I may still wish to edit and use the files, and I am not very techy and am a broke student... so anything grossly expensive is a no-no for me (between $50 and $200 is idyllic). If you could simply post links of different good/useful hard-drives that I can use, I'd be thankful.

Buy two external drives. Use one for Time Machine. Be sure this drive is at least twice the capacity of your computer's hard drive. Use the second drive as a bootable clone of your computer's hard drive. Should something happen you can immediately get the computer up and running from the clone until your restore from the Time Machine backup. This is what is called redundancy. Should either backup drive fail, there's another to take its place. Backup redundancy is very important. You can never have too many backups.

Storage System in Data Management System (DMS)

I am working with defining storage system where I have named the content respository as DMS_C2 , storage type as R/3 database, Version as 0045.
I would like to know if this storage system would be used to save my documents let say my CAD files in DMS. If yes how can I store and access my documents there in DMS_C2?

If you intend using an external server and want to experiment, I would actually advise using a cheap desktop machine (any machine with 512MB RAM with windows 2000 or 2003 server would suffice) and playing with that rather, because most of the issues you are likely to encounter would be around the connectivity of the two machines and making a copy of the internal database configuration is unlikely to resolve this or replicate the problems you will encounter. copying the configuration won't replicate the database, it will just create a different logical storage point in the database and I've encountered problems with setting this up before. Alternatively, use your production server and experiment with it before reinstalling before go live.
At least with the separate server you can test HTTP connections, use secure certificates etc. When you use the database you will find yourself unable to check a lot of these because its not on a different server.
Words of warning on problems you will be likely to encounter if installing on windows 2003 server, make sure you have network admin and local machine admin or the install will seem to be successful but you will never get the system up and running properly until you reinstall with these rights. You will receive a HTTP 401 error if that happens. This type of issue will not happen with the database which is why I suggest you get used to using an external server. You also need to test backup's and restores to ensure they are working properly. I've seen many clients not test this and find out their backup software is not compatible with the SAP DB used on the KPRO server, which is generally about the time you find out you've lost a lot of information.

For adding network drives i followed
1. Defined a data carrier type vault called NS-new storage --- am still not getting this NS listed in the Data carrier options when i go to define the mount there
i could create "Data carrier type" but how to create "Data Carrier" which is required for defining mouting point
2. Even i tried creating the NS through server front end and i expect this data type to appear in the options when i go to define mount which did not happen
Can you explain me how this whole thing is done step by step?

I want to retrieve the documents stored in a storage system linked to SAP via the archivelink and show it in a webdynpro application(Adaptive RFC).I need to know the right approach to do so.I am searching for a funtional module which can fetch me the documents from the data storage.The stored documents are linked to business object type BUS2104.

I tried the solution suggested by you.Here's what i did :
I executed the ARCHIV_GET_CONNECTIONS with input field OBJECTTYPE values as BUS2104.It gives me some entries in the output connections table.From the results , i picked up the ARCHIV_ID and ARC_DOC_ID fields as suggested by you.
I went to execute SCMS_AO_TABLE_GET with above two values as import parameters and COMP_ID = "data".But it does not give me any output.It says "HTTP error: 404 Not Found". Any idea why is it so?
Then i went to try SCMS_DOC_URL_READ .I find here that there are two mandatory parameters viz . STOR_CAT , DOC_ID.I tried giving the ARCHIV_ID value above as value for STOR_CAT . But it does not recognize it.Then i went to the table SDOKSTCA to look for any valid values for STOR_CAT , but i am not sure which one applies to my scenario.How do i find this?

Use SE30 to measure performance in background

Hi,
I want to measure performance of an existing program by running it in background because it takes a really long time to run.
I m trying to use the "Schedule Measurements for user service" option from the menu. But when I click on the new icon after going to Schedule Measurements for user service menu, I get a short dump with message
MOVE_NOT_SUPPORTED.
on the following line of code of standard SAP program SAPMS38T
> convert time stamp l_ts time zone sy-zonlo.
My question is
1. Am I using the right option to measure the performance in bacground or is there any other way (except changing code to put log statements)
2. How can I fix the above problem.
