Media100 to DV tape to Compressor mess...

Hello to all:
I have a client whose project has been plagued by compression encoding issues for both DVD and FLV movies (or any other web format for that matter).
Now, I suspect what is wrong and I would like to confirm it by getting a general poll of opinions from the rest of the forum.
First, the problem that occurs is a combination of lower quality video, and worst, scan lines and interlacing artifacting in fast moving shots. These types of issues come up both when using Compressor and using most others form of compression (FLV, Sorenson). Basically, anytime I tried to do anything with them. (resize them, export them, etc)
Here is what I think is the problem: My client is editing his material in Media100, still using the older 640x480, square pixels format Media100 codec. However, rather than exporting the file (it seems it makes his system crash.) he instead outputs the file to a DV recorder via s-video
Then I have to re-digitize it BACK to a Mac via firewire using FinalCut Pro or iMovie and THEN I compress it using Compressor (for DVD) or FlashVideo encoder for FLV's.
In any event, my theory is that by doing this three main problems occurs:
A) When we re-digitize from Media 100 back into DV for output we loose quality; Media100 codec is NOT a lossless codec, and neither is DV. When we digitize to Media 100, there is a tiny amount of data loss, when we digitize back to DV format, we loose quality again. It seems to me this doubling the video quality loss.
B) Media 100 codec is a 640 x 480 codec that uses square pixels, then gets digitized back to DV which is 720x480/ 720x486 with 0.9 pixel ratio. . Because the file is not being processed by the software as an export file but rather being digitize directly to a DV machine as a video input, the pixel ratio does NOT get converted, which accounts for the extra black space around the edge of all the videos and the inconsistent set of problems when trying to format the video to any standard sizes.
c) Field Render issue: Like the image resolution, the render field gets also messed up because it is not getting converted properly. It seems the DV copy made from the Media100 output looks fine at full size, but the moment you start resizing it, the odd scan lines resume.
I just want this settle for once and for all because we are wasting lots of time and is geting to be a rather frustrating thing, to say the least.
I never run into this problem with any other projetcs.
Thanks in advanced.

thanks for the response.
I am wondering though, what are you referring to when you say QT ISSUES. what is QT6?
When you download from you computer on to your DVX, what setting did you use on your DVX? I put mine on video, but get nothing other than a blank blue screen. As noted before, I know that the camera and computer are communicating because I was able to control the camera through the firewired in that mode.
I might just be missing a very simple step. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

  • Compressor messing with my FCP graphics

Suddenly, in the last few weeks, when I compress a FCP project with compressor all the graphics (text, shapes, etc) created in FCP get jumbled around a bit in the final file. Doesn't matter if it's an .mp4, avi, .mov...all the same. The only file it doesn't mess with is mp2.
Anyone know what the deal is?

Have you tried exporting (full quality) from FCP, then going to Compressor with that?
I don't suppose any of these graphics are CMYK?

  • Capturing 24pA off tape and P2 cards: different compressors

We are running a test to find if we can mix our DVCPRO HD 24pA footage that was shot both on P2 and on DVCPRO HD tape into the same timeline successfully.
When we log and transfer the P2 media, its compressor is DVCPRO HD 1080p30. But when we capture the footage off the tape, its compressor is DVCPRO HD 1080i60, despite our Easy Setup being set to have the compressor be DVCPRO HD 1080p30. All other properties are the same, compressor is the only difference (both are 23.98fps, 1280x1080 frame size). Anyone know why the compressors are coming in different? Can I force the tape media to capture with the 1080p30 compressor instead of 1080i60?
    Thank you.

Been looking into this more and it appears FCP defaults to compressor 1080i60 once our deck is hooked up (AJ HD 1400). Otherwise our Easy Setup of DVCPRO HD 108024pA defaults to compressor 1080p30. That must be why P2 comes in with one compressor and tape-digitized media comes in as the other.
Now my question is: how to make the deck allow capture using the 1080p30 codec or if it's not possible, is mixing 1080i60 and 1080p30 compressors on same timeline no big deal? (All other properties are the same: frame rate, dominance, size. The compressor is the only difference).

  • Tapes wont play for no good reason. Please help.

Dealing with a Handycam DCR-TRV260 Digital8 Video8 Hi8 NTSC here. Let me tell you my story. I first got that camera when I was 13 years old and I shot alot of home videos... I was immature and REALLY abused it.  After 10 years it still kinda works but the footage is heavily distorted and only certain parts would even play etc.  I really wanted to watch those old videos again. So I thought hmm I'm going to buy ANOTHER one...the EXACT same camera so that everything goes good. After all, none of those tapes play on my dads different handycam. Also I figure the tapes aren't messed up its the camera itself, I atleast took good care of the tapes.  Yes I bought the same EXACT camera again a few months ago on Ebay. Its in perfect condition all clean and shiney inside...you can tell the owner took good care of it.  I'm so happy that I could finally play those old videos. I got the iLink going on my computer and everything is awesome! But I got a problem still.  I have about 5 tapes that just wont play for some reason! They wouldn't play on the beat up camera and they wont play on the nice used one I got on ebay. No "dirty video head" messages come up or any other kind of tape error messages. The tapes LOOK good just like my other ones. They spin well...everything sounds good. They just wont play!  The thing is I KNOW there is footage on these! I remember some of the content. Infact one of the tapes plays for a few minutes but fades away in distortion as if the video head was dirty. But the videohead looks clean, no error messages and it plays other tapes fine.  WHY THESE TAPES? Was it because they were filmed on 2 different cameras? Same model but still different? Did I accidentally erase/formant the tapes in the press of a button? Did I record them in a certain mode and they have to be played a certain way? Is my video head dirty even though there are no error messages or signs of dirt? Could a tape get damaged even if it looks fine? Does it have something to do with the kind of tape I used? WHY WONT THEY PLAY?  PS: If I took the tapes into Walgreens or some kind of "rescued memories conversion place" do you think they could recover the footage and find out why the tapes wont play?  PSS: Why dont tapes recorded on one Sony Handycamera play on different models of Sony Handycameras?
    THANK YOU!!!

    Hi chrnko,
Thanks for the detailed explanation of the issue. It would seem that the 5 tapes that are not playing back in both cameras may be faulty. As you said, all your tapes, except these 5, can be played back without any issues when using your older and new camera.
As for your question on why some tapes won't play in other camcorders, it would depend on the tape they were recorded in. Digital 8 camcorders not designed to playback tapes recorded in the 8mm or Hi8™ format. It can only playback tapes recorded in the Digital8® format.
We would suggest contacting Sony Media Services for options of recovering/transferring your videos to other media like DVD discs.
If my post answers your question, please mark it as "Accept as Solution". Thanks_Mitch

  • How do I crop .mov file without changing aspect

    Hi guys,
I'm looking to isolate a figure on blue screen into exactly 350 x 400 pixels for placement in a cd rom program. I've been able to size it down to 498 x 398 as a quicktime file, now I just need to crop a bit of the top and sides.
Sorenson squeeze crops but I don't want any compression on it. Final cut and quicktime won't crop, but change the aspect. Anyone know a good program for a mac (free) or a way to do cropping?
    Thanks!

    maven2 wrote:
It's actually getting distorted not in Final cut, but in Compressor when I tell it to output at 400 x 350.
then you'll need to go the other way, apply some squash to the FCP layer so it is flattened. when compressor messes with it, it will be unsquashed.
The distortion is probably entering your workflow in the original footage which has been captured one way (maybe as square pixels), flagged in the camera to be pulled/stretched out to 16x9 (as horizontal pixels), then you've brought it into a different aspect ratio sequence and exported it (as square or vertical pixels) but Compressor is probably seeing original PAR flag.

  • FCP Workflow recommendations for dual SD and HD delivery

What would be the best workflow for this scenario: I need to shoot in 1080p 23.97 and deliver in both SD and HD. I would like to shoot with a Sony HD900. I don't have the fastest/largest drives....using Lacie and G-Tech 800 and 400 Firewire drives. Is it best to have my footage ingested using a ProRes 422 codec for offline? Any other recommendations? Thanks

400 Firewire and 1080p could have problems playing nice. It could work but your system will mostly have issues with the system being able to play the footage off the drive without any pauses or hiccups. This will be especially evident when you have drives daisy chained together.
I would edit in HD and then convert your HD final sequence to SD. A Kona card will do an excellent job of this if you are going to tape.
Compressor can fulfill any web needs. As far as Compressor converting HD to SD for DVD I have found it to be consistently inconsistent. Sometimes it looks awesome, sometimes it doesn't. You can play with frame controls but render times will go up considerably.
Worse case scenario we have down-converted HD to SD tape with a Kona card and then encoded for DVD with a hardware encoding card or rolled it back in to FC SD and then exported via Compressor.

  • Compressor Help for HDCam Tape Layoff

I have footage that was shot on the RED, graded and output via Apple Color, and now has the following specs:
    resolution: 2048x1152
    pixel aspect ratio: square
    frame rate: 23.98
    field dominance: none
and I need to lay it off to HDCam for screening purposes. The venue has requested
"an Apple Pro Res QT to be laid off to HDCam tape at 1080i/59.94"
What's the best way to get them my footage without it getting mangled in the process?

As noted above, there are 6 versions of "ProRes Quicktime". It doesn't hurt to verify exactly which one.
    Getting it done ....
    Open up Compressor
Select the appropriate ProRes preset in Settings. It can be found in Apple> Advanced format conversions folder.
Copy it and select the copy in the Settings list.
    Go to the Inspector window.
Change the name to something meaningful to you - "Red to ProRes 1080i" would work for me.
Start working through the settings. The key thing to keep in mind is you are turning a progressive 23.98 large raster image into an interlaced 29.97 smaller raster image. You will want to have FRAME CONTROLS turned on to get the best frame rate and image size conversion.
Do some tests with smaller segments to judge time vs quality. Unless there is a decided quality benefit THAT YOU CAN SEE, stay away from BEST. It adds enormously to the time.
Or, find someone with a Kona3 that can do the conversion to 1080i ProRes for you in hardware.
If you have additional questions, post back.
    Good luck.

  • Is Quicktime 10 messing with my FCP/Compressor exports?

Just upgraded to Snow Leopard which included QT10, which is utterly useless.
Anyway, besides my general dislike of the new QT10, I have a feeling the newly installed ProRes codecs associated with the upgrade are messing with my exports from both FCP & Compressor. We shoot HD, and often export cropped 4x3 versions of that HD. I just exported a batch of sequences at Apple Pro Res 422 960x720 from a 4x3 sequence.
When I open that in Quicktime, it has been stretched to be anamorphic. If I import into FCP, it tells me that while the frame size is 960x720, the pixel aspect ratio is HD (960x720). Only when I set this to square do I get the proper 4x3 aspect ratio I desire. Likewise, a batch I sent out from Compressor the other day had the same problem.
The solution I've found is that, in Compressor, I have to force the export to be set to square pixels. Easy enough I suppose. But my question is, why does Pro Res (with the new QT10 and ProRes codecs installed) now default to this HD (960 x 720) pixel aspect ratio and default to giving me stretched footage? If the HD footage I'm shooting is square pixels, why is ProRes trying to do anything else with it other than keep it at square pixels?
Also, will Apple create a Pro version of QT10, because as it is, its useless for video work. QT7 Pro is a pretty helpful utility for those of us in video post-production, I'd hate to see that go away and be replaced with QT10.

  • Did WMV Studio mess up Compressor?

In Compressor 3.0.5, I'm getting an error when I'm trying to make an mpg2 (like I've been doing for over a year successfully) that reads....
    Name: Final seq 03 P-02-Kinship 22 P-10-Richards MPEG-2.m2v
    Time Elapsed: 0:00:00
    Time Remaining: 0:00:00
    Percent Complete: 100
Status: Failed - 3x should not be auto-detect at this point
What has changed is that yesterday I upgraded from free to Flip4Mac WMV Studio so I could make a Windows Media file for a client. Did that mess me up? I don't know.
I'm trying to make the video from the FCP timeline to Compressor.

    Hi,
I'm sorry I don't have an answer for your problem but I have the same error message exporting prores to m2v. It was working till now… did you had an explanation on this problem?

  • HELP!!  My Compressor is messed up! ;)

So I had to re-install FCP due to a codec that was missing (somehow) and once that was done I re-booted my machine to find out that somehow, Compressor had been removed. So I had to get all my FCP (actually FCS) disks out and re-install Compressor again, and it worked, only now when I launch compressor, NONE of the windows come up and when I pull them up one by one, all I can get at the Preview, the Settings/Destinations, the History and the Inspector. I cannot for the life of me get the job window to open so I can actually put clips into Compressor to compress. I've tried the "Layout" feature (does nothing) and the New Batch (also nothing) and can't get this window to come up at all.
I wish I could attach a screen shot to illustrate what I'm seeing but I don't know what the heck is going on. Can someone help?

Hate to say this but would suggest you re-install FCS again. The general view is that FCS is best done as a clean install (completely remove everything then replace everything) which is a little awkward but results in a more stable system.

  • Compressor Screen layout is messed up

When starting Compressor only the top menu is displayed. No windows at all. When I try selecting any of the build in layouts (Window/Layouts) nothing happens.
I can get it to display Settings, History and Preview by selecting them from the Window menu. But I can't get it to display the batch window.
    What can I do

Did it work before? If so, what has changed since the last time it worked?

You might have turned VoiceOver 'on'. See if triple-clicking the home button turns it off, and if it does then cahnge what Settings > General > Axxessibility > Triple-Click Hme is set to.

The manual (http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad) also says that you should be able to switch voice-over off by connecting to your computer's iTunes :
Turn VoiceOver on or off in iTunes: Select iPad in the iTunes sidebar. In the Options section of the Summary pane, click Configure Universal Access. Select VoiceOver, then click OK.
So select Configure Universal Access at the bottom of the Summary tab and set Seeing to Neither

  • Footage imported 720PN, Didn't remove pulldown, Fix in Compressor?

Hi, if you know this, you are truly an FCP ninja.
Was unfamiliar with the 720p workflow and simply used Import -P2 footage off of the card. Didn't use Remove Pulldown Box. Seemed simple enough, but now the footage is a mess. It's choppy and sped up. Don't have original files.
I understand that compressor (FCP 6.0.6) has a way to fix this? Is that true? Re-shooting is not an option and days are already gone. Any true Compressor ninjas out there? Please?
    Thank you so much!

Thanks for replying.  I was beginning to think my post would be buried and never seen again.
I am aware of the need in CS4 to do the manual "Interpret Footage" step, which was not required in CS3 when needing to remove 3:2 pulldown.
But unless the 3:2 pulldown cadence information is recorded as part of taking the progressive footage and putting it into a 60i wrapper (i.e. your progressive footage is actually recorded on tape as a 60i signal, but where the frames follow a 3:2 pulldown system), then Premiere would be left to guess at the pulldown timing.
So far from my research, it would appear that a number of first-level prosumer cameras that do the 60i-wrapper method of recording progressive frames onto tape do not record the pulldown phasing information.  That would prevent Premier Pro CS3 and CS4 from successfully restoring the footage to 24p after interpreting the footage.
People say that Sony and Canon are particularly bad about this. Panasonic cameras have not had reports of problems for SD progressive as well as HD progressive pulldown removal - that I know of at least -- so they appear to be consistent among their models for recording 3:2 cadence phasing information.
You mentioned that you are now having problems with your footage.  A couple of questions for you.  What model camera do you use?  And are you using DV or HDV, or something else for your progressive footage?
For example, if you use a Canon XH-A1, do you shoot HDV 24pa mode?  Thoses pieces of information will make the situation more clear.

  • What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a "widescreen anamorphic" 16:9 SD DVD (original aspect ratio is 14:9)?

I just received the masters for a new SD DVD. I would like to author a "widescreen anamorphic" SD DVD horizontally squeezed widescreen image stored in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio DVD image frame. (On 4:3 displays, mattes should preserve the original aspect ratio. On 16:9 displays the image will fill the screen at the highest possible resolution.)
Below I've listed the specs of the Digi Beta master tapes the producers have sent to me for digitizing. I'd like to know this: What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a widescreen anamorphic SD DVD, using material with an original aspect ratio of 14:9?
I've also listed my guesses below. Please let me know if my guesses are right. If not, please suggest alternatives (and if possible explain why.)
    TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF EXISTING MASTER:
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
Anamorphic: Full-Height Anamorphic (16:9 image displayed in letterboxed, non-distored 4:3)
    Display Format: 4:3 Letterbox
MY GUESS AT IDEAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (for a DigiBeta, that is):
    Tape: DigiBeta
    Original Aspect Ratio: 1.55 (14:9)
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
    Pixel Aspect: Square
    Frame Size: 720 x 540
    Anamorphic: YES
Display Format: 16:9 Anamorphic (horizontally squeezed widescreen image)
Please feel free to ask for clarification or further information you need to answer my question.
Thank you so much in advance for your help!
    Best, Noetical.
BTW, I can't wait for the day when everything has gone digital and we get digital intermediates instead of tapes to digitize!

Hi Nick...thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.
    Nick Holmes wrote:
What you have there is a mess.
    NTSC pixels are never square.
NTSC is 720x486, even when it is Anamorphic.
You shouldn't be using an already letterboxed master to make an Anamorphic version. Get the master that was made before the letterboxing stage.
When you make an Anamorphic DVD it should display as 16:9 full screen automatically on widescreen TVs.
The same DVD will automatically letterbox on 4:3 TVs.
Um yeah...duh. That's exactly what I was trying to explain in the preface of my question. I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear...all these things you mention are the reasons I'm putting together a list of the technical specs of the DigiBeta I need so I can have them send that instead of the stupid letterboxed version.
Look, I'm sending this request to some intern at their offices in England, asking for a master with which I can make an Anamorphic DVD. They already sent me this master, which as you and I both agree is an idiotic asset to use for these purposes. As such, I was hoping for advice on a more precise way of requesting the master that I need than asking for "the master that was made before the letterboxing stage." Upon reflection, perhaps I'll just do that. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about something I should add to my request that would improve the odds of them sending the tape I need, please repond. Thank you!
BTW, It's been a long time since anyone has responded to something I've written or said as though I'm an idiot. I remember now that I don't really like it. (Moving along...)
