IPhoto 9.1.5 crashing when going to external editor
I have iPhoto set to open Photoshop as the external editor. But it keeps crashing my mac when I instruct iPhoto to open a pic in the external editor, not every time, but enought that it's so annoying, it causes a complete crash so I have to do a complete restart.
It's driving me nuts, any answers anyone?
Thanks
KateOK had a big crash which has trashed an iPhoto library completely, if anyone can help will appreciate it. Crash report below.

Rewire doesn't work anymore when update to Melodyne UNO 1.8
Hi,
I'm just update/upgrade my Melodyne UNO to version 1.8,But now..it doesn't work with my Logic Pro 7 (rewire) anymore!!!
However i try to use the command key (commandoptionx) to bring the region to Melodyne for pitching correction...it doesn't work with the command key.
What's the steps of setup the rewire or anything wrong?Help please!!Thanks bro.
erm...mind to let me know how do it function in plug-in?i mean, how do you fine-tune your region?
For Rewire,it'll go like this...after a setup of rewire channel..then select the region that we gonna fine-tune in Melodyne and use the external sampler editor command key to launch the Melodyne and edit it ,after a save on melodyne it'll auto over-write the untune region with this current tuned region!!
But how do plug-in work? -
hey buddy,
I just bought the Melodyne UNO!
How do i use it on Logic??is it mean by ReWire??but,i really don't know how to figure out it at all...Can someone give me a hand?!Thanks.
Let say,I've recorded a Vocal in the Logic project..then,how to Tune my vocal with Melodyne??is it a Plug In or need to export the vocal to Melodyne to Fine Tune it and send back after processed??
Thanks
RayTo set up rewire (this is in the manual): select an audio instrument channel and set the channel to one of the melodyne uno rewire channels.
To edit an audio file in uno, first select it in Logic then use the start external sample editor key command. The first time you do this you will be prompted to select the application. Select uno. The file will then show up in uno and you can edit to your hearts content. You can hear your edits (via rewire) in context with your other tracks. Be sure to mute your original track in logic while editing in uno or you will hear both at the same time. When you like your edits just close the file in uno and the edits will be saved. When you go back to logic the file will update to the changed version and you are on your way. All of this is in the respective manuals, so read them to get the details.
One thing that I have not seen documented is that you need to record with no countin or preroll because uno or rewire sees that as part of the audio file and logic does not. This makes the file being edited in uno play back through rewire off in time by the amount of the countin.
Hope this helps. I have been brief so you may need to dig in the manuals to really understand it. -
How can I set External Editor to PSE, Jpeg files?
I'm recovering from a hard drive failure, and now that I've re-installed Lightroom 4 and PSE 12, I can't get LIghtroom to send high quality JPEG files to PSE. The two options are TIFF and PSD. I tried manually setting the external editor to PSE.exe, which gives me JPEG files, but they show up in PSE at very low resolution, even though the resolution is set to 240 in Perferences. I'm exporting at 8 bit, since PSE doesn't work well with 16 bit. Before the crash, I could send over high resolution JPEG files, so I know it's possible. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for that. Yes I got it to work but had to select Photoshop first. At which point I got a message that it was already the default editor; so I clicked choose anyway and got the jpeg option. I then switched to the PSE editor app and sure enough jpeg remained as a choice. Maybe the OP needs to switch apps and then re-select the PSE editor app. A bit odd really, even the difference between Photoshop as the default and Photoshhop as the additional choice!
Worked first time on Mac and LR5 without any messing about. -
Elements 6 editor crashes when opening more than 1 file
elements 6 editor crashes when opening more than 1 file
It may be a lack of available memory (RAM). Open the Editor and click the menu:
Edit >> Preferences >> Performance
Photoshop Elements >> Preferences >> Performance (on Mac)
You can increase the amount of RAM available to elements, but never go above 90% otherwise you will have nothing left for running other open applications.
You can also allocate other volumes or an external hard drive as scratch disks which elements can then use in place of a shortage of RAM.

LR 4.3 - Can't Change External Editor from CS6 back to CS5
Using LR 4.3 because of Retina Screen MBP. Downloaded trial copy of CS6 with patch. Every time I use CS6 as an external editor from LR, it crashes, especially when cloning. Want to change back to CS5 as external editor in preferences but it doesn't seem to be an option. Any way to do this?
Thanks
Barry FisherAs long as CS6 is installed Lightroom will choose it as the primary external editor. You can however have CS5 as a secondary editor.
You do not choose the primary editor it will only be Photoshop, Lightroom will choose the most (senior) one installed CS over Elements and the latest version. -
RAW File Support for editing in external editors
Is there some way to make A3 to allow me to pass the RAW file to an external editor and then pass it back with all the non destructive changes made?
Basically A3 -> CaptureNX2 -> A3 with file changes?
I love the interface for A3 and the ease of workflow to do other things with my images. However not being able to have my all RAW workflow (which i use currently) is a deal breaker....I spent some trying Catapult this evening. It needs some work:
1. It requires you to use Aperture 3 in 32 bit mode.
2. First attempt to import resulted in both the plug-in and Aperture 3 spinning their wheels indefinitely. I had to shut down Aperature and restart.
3. Second attempt wasn't working well because the plug-in created a new set of drop and pick up directories, but was not looking in the right places.
4. I deleted both sets of directories and created tried a third time. Interestingly, the third attempt did not create the directories, so I had to manually create them. The import process caused Aperture 3 to crash.
I've sent email asking the developer if they will be updating to 64 bit and testing with Aperture 3 anytime soon... -
"Rebuild Library" option leads to external editor problems
Due to an issue with the Aperture internal tray I used the option "rebuild library". After the rebuild is completed it is not possible to open the images with an external editor or plugin anymore.
The message says that the image could not be handled as it has an unsupported format. Sorry, I cannot post the exact message as I use the german version of Aperture.
After getting the old Aperture library from my backup I tried it again. Before "rebuild library" everything works fine (except for the tray), after the rebuild I receive the message. My affected images are masters inside the library and referenced ones - that doesn't matter. Images imported after the faulty rebuild work as usual. But it is still not possible to edit the older ones - those imported before the crash and rebuild. I couldn't find a workaround until now, except exporting and reimporting every single master, adjusting everything new and edit this new one with a plugin or the external editor.
I tried to export a project as a whole and reimport it, it dosen't change anything. If I open the package of the aplibrary I see that the TIFF or PSD is created by the command "edit in external editor" and I can open this in photoshop, but Aperture isn't able to hand it over to the external editor or the plugin. It seems to be a database problem not a problem of image rendering.
I also tried to rebuild the library again and repaired the user permissions of the database (CMD ALT during aperture start) - Doesn't help.
I imported an affected mediabase into another Aperture installation on my notebook which was not affected before. But the imported images inside the project won't open with the external editor or any plugin too. So I think it has nothing to do with the general installation of Aperture. For sure it is an error inside the database caused by the automatic rebuild of the database after a crash.
For all aperture users I can give the following two hints:
1) Backup your Aperture database carefully.
2) After a crash of Aperture and an automatic or any other rebuild of the database, check FIRST if your database is infected by our problem. Open some images with a plugin or the external editor. If this doesn't work, go back to your vault version.
My mistake was to backup RIGHT AFTER the crash, without checking everything including the external editor command. Because of this I infected my vault version with the error too.....
Apple is needed for solving this issue. It should be possible for the programmers to find the error inside an exported project/mediabase, which is affected with the problem. I would provide such a file to Apple for examination.

Using Adobe Bridge as Aperture 3 External Editor
I have a problem that I can't seem to solve and I'm hopeful that a post here can get me closer to some resolution. I recently started using Bridge for noise reduction and PS for high pass sharpening. The downside is my work flow is now shot full of holes! I have Bridge as my external editor; I make the edits in Bridge then do a high pass sharpen as well as any other edits I might choose to make in PS. If I need to, I flatten the image if I have layers. It is here that my problem begins.
Aperture creates the new tiff version within it's program as soon as I choose to edit in Bridge, but I don't know the exact process to save that image while in Bridge or Photoshop to reflect the changes in Aperture. Another question I have is which version of the image in Bridge I should be editing the jpeg or tiff? any help here would be greatly appreciated!I use Bridge as editor because once there, I go into "camera raw" to process images.
So now you're bringing a third app into the equation. Bridge, ACR and Photoshop are all individual applications. If you're not using an app like Aperture then Bridge might be the front end for the other two, but in the case you describe it has no role.
Another thing to think about: ACR ("camera Raw") is for processing Raws - which job you are currently doing with Aperture. You're not sending Raws to Bridge/ACR... You're sending tiffs.
I think you need to rethink your workflow somewhat. I'm not sure you've grasped what the various tools actually do.

Feature Request: Option to Load Master in External Editor
Right now, if I want to edit a file in an external editor, Aperture makes a version first. While I understand the design reasoning, I need to override this behavior in two specific cases:
First, sometimes I want to use Adobe Camera Raw to process a RAW file. Aperture should allow me to do this directly from the application without exporting the master and loading it from the Finder.
Second, and this is more important for me, I'd like Aperture to send original layered PSD files as imported back to Photoshop for editing. Aperture will import my layered PSD files without difficulty. If I export the master, I get the original file. But if I try to open it in an external editor (Photoshop) from Aperture, Aperture makes a flattened intermediate version. That's not what I want - and it destroys my non-destructive workflow by flattening all my layers in Photoshop. What I'd like is an option to have Aperture send the master layered PSD file to Photoshop, allow me to edit it, and perhaps save the changes back in Aperture as modifications to the original layered PSD file.
There's an interesting semantic issue. "Non-destructive" is more than just not touching the original files. It's allowing for a workflow which can be rolled back to previous states. My work in Photoshop uses layers, masks, adjustments, and channels to achieve this. I need Aperture to allow me to keep using Photoshop in a non-destructive way, while enabling me to edit my RAWs and other flattened files in the powerful ways that Aperture offers.Managing layered PSD files in Aperture
For those who absolutely must manage layered PSD files in Aperture, here is the way to do it...
1- In your original PSD file, HIDE ALL LAYERS above the background layer
2- IMPORT this PSD file into Aperture
3- CREATE A VERSION in Aperture by choosing to edit externally in Photoshop.
4- Back in Photoshop OPEN THE ORIGINAL PSD file along with the new version
5- LINK all the LAYERS in the original PSD file and DRAG them TO the new VERSION (holding the shift key down so they pin register)
6- SAVE the new version in Photoshop
7- Back in Aperture your version is now an exact layered copy of your original which will not flatten when reopened from Aperture into Photoshop.
Obviously this process will be rather tedious if you need to deal with hundreds of layered PSD files, but if you are in that situation that implies you already have a workflow and a storage strategy that works well for you. So why change, especially to Aperture?
Adobe Bridge or Media Pro or Portfolio are the obvious programs for you !

A Better Way to Edit RAW with External Editor?
The settings for the external editor will only let you edit the images in Tiff or PSD, I want to edit the RAW image itself. The only way I know how to do that is expert the master, edit it and then import it back in.
This is a hockey workflow and frustrating especially when I then do a quick fix in Aperture itself and then want to edit the image again externally in GIMP.
I just want to edit the RAW image in my external editor when needed, yet do my folder management within Aperture.I was afraid of that...
I don't use lightroom or Photoshop. I used to be a Photoshop user until the cost became so prohibitive. I have since switched to using GIMP as my eternal editor, it's native files are .xcf (musch like the Photoshop .PSD) but Aperture doesn't support .xcf files and I doubt they ever will since GIMP is a free open source tool, rather than a commercial product.
I have been playing with 3.01 now for a few days and finding that the heal tool and burn and dodge tools seem to be improved. Even though in GIMP they were destructive to the original RAW file those items were noticeably better in the external editor.
Also, any extreme editing still needs to be done outside of Aperture, so I will take a Catapult or just keep my current workflow.... -
I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5. When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different. Why doesn't it appear edited?
People who have Photoshop, but don't have Lightroom, need ACR so that they can use Raw files. Without ACR they could do nothing with those (they may also like having ACR so that they can work on other kinds of image using the same kinds of adjustments and techniques, as are used with Raw files).
People who have Lightroom, can get access to Raw files regardless whether ACR is present or not. They can use Lightroom on other kinds of image also, using the same methods. LR can pass images directly into Photoshop without passing via ACR (or else does so transparently, which amounts to substantially the same thing).
ACR does not, strictly speaking, even need to be installed for this external editing to happen. In fact, not even PS needs to be - since a different image editor can be used instead, while still retaining the Adobe Raw conversion etc.
Lightroom "subcontracts out" specialised external tasks, in this workflow, but is still your "main contractor": the image is otherwise located, viewed, managed, adjusted/presented and output entirely using LR.
So IMO we can divide image processing into:
operations that involve pixels and layers and layer masks and adjustment layers etc (of the kind done inside Photoshop)
operations that involve parametric edits (of the kind done in ACR where you are not using a Lightroom based workflow; otherwise, done inside Lightroom)
When PS is called in, that's because those tasks are impossible or unsuitable to do in Lightroom. But those tasks can't be done in ACR either - by definition, since LR and ACR have exactly the same image processing "feature set".
Lightroom is irrelevant to the Bridge + ACR + PS workflow. This workflow requires both your PS and your ACR to be current enough, to support your Raw format etc.
ACR and Bridge are irrelevant to the LR + (image editor) workflow. It is in this case, only LR which needs to be current enough to support your Raw format etc.

Can't open iphoto file to edit in Elements 10 even though external editor is set
Right clicking on iphoto file, selecting "edit in external editor" resullts in spinning beach ball. Each attempt at opening a file initiates a reopening of Elements even though it is already opened.
Can you open images normally in Photoshop Elements? I would recommend including this information as well as which verson of iPhoto and Mac OS you are using to the Photoshop Elements forum. It might also possibly be a problem with iPhoto but the users in the Photoshop Elements forum should better be able to determine where the problem lies.

How do I get imovie to use Photoshop Elements 12 as external editor?
How do I get imovie to use Photoshop Elements 12 as external editor? I am making a movie slide show with music from my Caribbean vacation photos and adding text captions to photos in PS Elements 12. I can also add some effects to photos like edge blur although I like iphotos effects better but iphoto doesn't seem to do text. The finished PS Elements photo doesn't seem to want to be shared by iphoto which is what imovie uses...
I am still learning to use PS Elements 12 for Mac (had PSE 7 for WinVista but wasn't proficient) and Mac and it's programs are new to me. I switch between my old Dell which is still amped for graphics and the new Mac mini. I started to use Movie Maker to do my vacation project but read that imovie was better but so far it doesn't seem to have as broad of file useage when it comes to imovie and photo files.
Hmmmmm??? What to do?You simply need to create your stills with Photoshop Elements, save them in a suitable format (.jpg, .png, .tiff are all acceptable) then drag and drop them into your iMovie timeline. You don't have to use iPhoto.
Geoff.
