Memory consumption per bpel process

Is there any way to monitor the memory consumed by each bpel process instance when it is running and also how much each components of this instance consumes.
We know about the top utility but it shows only the memory allocated to the opmn process and not by the individual bpel process. Also the threads page in the manage bpel domain also gives only the overall memory used by the opmn process and not a bpel instance by instance consumption. And sometimes even when no requests/instances are running this is showing a very high value to the tune of 400Mb.
So to summarize how to monitor the memory consumed by each bpel instance and also by each of the components in that instance.

I think i was not clear earlier...we want to find out how much of the memory is being consumed by our process alone excluding the opmn system processes. We want to do this
because for huge payloads of the tune of 3Mb the system throws a out of memory java heap space exception. Increasing the heap space to 2Gb (earlier 1.5gb) solves the problem but we want to find out why so much memory is being consumed and what we can do to reduce this consumption.
We have done the normal tweakings like reducing audit levels, logging levels, reduce no of threads in the system and use of xdk transformations but they seem to be of little help.
Btwn our process uses a apps adapter would the transformations of xml to db objects use this memory?
Thanks,
Praveen.

• Check Process memory consumption and Kill it

Hello
I have just installed Orchestrator and have a problem that I think is perfekt for Orchestrator to handle.
I have a process that sometimes hangs and the only way to spot it is that the memory consumption has stoped.
The process is started every 15 minutes and scans a folder, if it finds a file it reads the file to a system. You can see that it is working by the increasing Memory consumption. If the read fails then the memory consumption stops. The process is still working
and is responding but is hung.
I'm thinking about doing a runbook that checks the memory-consumption every 5 minutes and compares it with the previous value. if the last three values are the same then I will kill the process and start it again.
My problem is that I have not found a way to check the memory consumption of a process.
I have set up a small test, just verify that I get the correct process, with the activity Monitor process -> Get Process Status -> Append Line (process name).
But How do I get the process memory consumption?
/Anders

Now that I think about it a bit more I don't think there will be an easy way to set up a monitor for your situation in SCOM. Not that it couldn't be done, just not easily. Getting back to SCORCH. What you are trying to do isn't an every day kind of
scenario. I don't think there is a built in activity for this.
The hardest thing to overcome whether you use SCORCH or SCOM is likely going to be determining the error condition of three consecutive samples of the same memory usage. you'll need a way to track the samples. I can't think of a good way to do
this without utilizing scripting.

• BW data model and impacts to HANA memory consumption

Hi All,
As I consider how to create BW models where HANA is the DB for a BW application, it makes sense moving the reporting target from Cubes to DSOs. Now the next logical progression of thought is that the DSO should store the lowest granularity of data(document level). So a consolidated data model that reports on cross functional data would combine sales, inventory and purchasing data all being stored at document level. In this scenario:
Will a single report execution that requires data from all 3 DSOs use more memory vs the 3 DSOs aggregated say at site/day/material?Lower Granularity Data = Higher Memory Consumption per report execution
I'm thinking that more memory is required to aggregate the data in HANA before sending to BW. Is aggregation still necessary to manage execution memory usage?
Regards,
Dae Jin

Let me rephrase.
I got an EarlyWatch that said my dimensions on one of cube were too big. I ran SAP_INFOCUBE_DESIGNS in SE38 in my development box and that confirmed it.
So, I redesigned the cube, reactivated it and reloaded it. I then ran SAP_INFOCUBE_DESIGNS again. The cube doesn't even show up on it. I suspect I have to trigger something in BW to make it populate for that cube. How do I make that happen manually?
Thanks.

• Modifying Memory Optimization parameter for BPEL process in SOA 11g

Hello
I have turned on memory optimization parameter for my BPEL process in the composite.xml (11g)
this is what I have in composite.xml:
<property name="bpel.config.inMemoryOptimization">false</property>
How do we modify this parameter in the EM console at runtime? I changed this property to "true" using the System MBean browser, but it wasn't taking effect. I thought the SOA server must be restarted (similar to what we used to do in 10g). But when I restart the SOA server, the parameter goes back to whatever the value was in the composite.xml ignoring the change I made in the System MBean browser
Please share your thoughts.
Thanks in advance.
Raja

Deploying a newer version is not an option, as the endpoints could change (not sure if it would in 11g, but in 10g it does) and also, our service consumers will be pointing to the older version. As mentioned above, if clients are using URL without version then call will be forwarded to default version of composite internally. No manual tweaking required for this. Just make sure that while deploying the new version you are marking it as default.
Besides, we report on service metrics and having multiple versions just complicates things. Not at all. If you are not using versioning feature, you are really under utilizing the Oracle SOA 11g. Remember that metrics can be collected for a single composite with same effort, irrespective of the number of composite versions deployed. Only few product tables refer the version while storing composite name and rest all use only the composite name without version. I do not know how you are collecting service metrics but we use DB jobs for same it works perfectly with any number of composites having multiple versions deployed.
The idea is to do some debugging and collect audit trail in case there is a production issue by disabling inMemoryOptimization parameter. This is a live production environment and deploying whenever we want is not even an option for us, unfortunately. Why not debug by increasing log level. Diagnostic logs are the best option to debug an issue even in production. For getting audit trail you may re-produce the issue in lower environments. I think no organization will allow re-deployments just for debugging some issue in production until and unless it is too critical issue to handle.
Does this not supported in 11g? if it isn't, it does seem like a bug to me. You may always go ahead and raise a case with support.

• High DB Resident consumption + Unload table process from memory

Hi SAP experts,
I need your great help!
We have implemented the HANA accelerators for all standard scenarios available and some custom programs, as well as the HANA Live package for critical areas (almost 200 tables replicated in real time). Now we are facing issues in HANA productive related to DB Resident consumption (see attached) and I have realized that indexserver logs has increased significantly.
My questions are:
1) How can I check which specific process is causing this issue? Reset Memory Statistics would be a good practice to release space?
2) I read that HANA has an automatic process to unload tables and release memory space. Does it work only for virtual memory? Besides this process is it a good practice to do the manual unload?
3) Is it possible find by period how many unloads tables were done automatically? I know the general query select * from "M_CS_UNLOADS" but it is not specified by period.
Sorry for many questions. I really appreciate your comments for these points.
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards,
Amanda

1) Memory shortage is a system wide problem and often not a single process but a whole set of processes lead to the situation. The "one bad process" situation is rather seldom.
2) Not sure what you mean by the "virtual memory" point here. And no, it's not good practice to manually trigger unloads. SAP HANA keeps track on which memory structures can go and will unload them if needed (and only then).
As a rule of thumb: more often than not OOM problems are due to undersized systems.
3) M_CS_UNLOADS contains a timestamp that can be used for splitting into periods.
You may use Solution Manager for a more user appealing experience or the monitoring scripts of SAP note 1969700.
Also, make sure to read SAP note

• Oracle BPEL processes per day -DB query

Hi all,

In particular I am running the following query towards the cube_instance table:

Yoru comments were correct , the query has run but the output is rather not what I wanted to see.

• Business Event not triggering the SOA BPEL Process with OA Adapter

Hello Gurus,
I am working on Business event "oracle.apps.per.api.employee.create_employee" and the event is getting triggered when creating an employee from EBS.
The message has come till WF_BPEL_QTAB(I could seeit) and in "READY" status. We have a SOA BPEL Process that is subscribed to the event "oracle.apps.per.api.employee.create_employee" using OA Adapter.
The issue is that the SOA BPEL process is not getting triggered and it is not dequeing the message from WF_BPEL_Q.
Please let me know if I have missed any steps on SOA BPEL side.
Note: Agent Listener is up and running.
Thanks,
Sunil

Ofcourse, I subscribed to the business event using BPEL. Ideally the instances should be created and I should be able to receive the standard payload.
Yes the JNDIs are correct. We have other business events working in the same fashion and we are using same JNDI.

• How to measure memory consumption during unit tests?

Hello,
I'm looking for simple tools to automate measurement of overall memory consumption during some memory-sensitive unit tests.
I would like to apply this when running a batch of some test suite targetting tests that exercise memory-sensitive operations.
The intent is, to verify that a modification of code in this area does not introduce regression (raise) of memory consumption.
I would include it in the nightly build, and monitor evolution of summary figure (a-ah, the "userAccount" test suite consumed 615Mb last night, compared to 500Mb the night before... What did we check-in yesterday?)
Running on Win32, the system-level info of memory consumed is known not to be accurate.
Using perfmon is more accurate but it seems an overkill - plus it's difficult to automate, you have to attach it to an existing process...
I've looked in the hprof included in Sun's JDK, but it seems to be targetted at investigating problems rather than discovering them. In particular there isn't a "summary line" of the total memory consumed...
What tools do you use/suggest?

However this requires manual code in my unit test
classes themselves, e.g. in my setUp/tearDown
methods.
I was expecting something more orthogonal to the
tests, that I could activate or not depending on the
purpose of the test. Some IDEs display mmeory usage and execution time for each test/group of tests.
If I don't have another option, OK I'll wire my own
pre/post memory counting, maybe using AOP, and will
activate memory measurement only when needed. If you need to check the memory used, I would do this.
You can do the same thing with AOP. Unless you are using an AOP library, I doubt it is worth additional effort.
Have you actually used your suggestion to automate
memory consumption measurement as part of daily builds?Yes, but I have less than a dozen tests which fail if the memory consumption is significantly different.
I have more test which fail if the execution time is siginificantly different.
Rather than use the setUp()/tearDown() approach, I use the testMethod() as a wrapper for the real test and add the check inside it. This is useful as different test will use different amounts of memory.
Plus, I did not understand your suggestion, can you elaborate?
- I first assumed you meant freeMemory(), which, as
you suggest, is not accurate, since it returns "an
approximation of [available memory]"freeMemory gives the free memory from the total. The total can change so you need to take the total - free as the memory used.
- I re-read it and now assume you do mean
totalMemory(), which unfortunately will grow only
when more memory than the initial heap setting is
needed.more memory is needed when more memory is used. Unless your test uses a significant amount of memory there is no way to measure it reliably. i.e. if a GC is perform during a test, you can have the test appear to use less memory than it consumes.
- Eventually, I may need to inlcude calls to
System.gc() but I seem to remember it is best-effort
only (endless discussion) and may not help accuracy.if you do a System.gc(); followed by a Thread.yield() at the start it can improve things marginally.

• Time Out for a syncronus BPEL process

Hi All,
Need your help with regards to the following:
From a parent BPEL process we need to invoke a synchronous BPEL Process .This(child) could take anything between 20-30 seconds for processing a request.
Now the requirement is to time out the parent BPEL process if the BPEL process it is calling takes more than 25 seconds for processing a request.
If( time taken to get from partner process >25 sec)
time out
Else
Move along with the rest of the process.
Approaches considered:
1) Pick activity :
Fallout: the pick activity would work only when you are calling a asynchronous BPEL process.
2) Having the invoke activity in a scope and adding an on Alarm branch for the scope.
Fallout: The BPEL process manager executes all the other activities even after exceeding the maximum time the process is set for timing out.
That is if we consider the below scenario
If( time taken to get from partner process >25 sec)
time out
Else
move along with the rest of the process.
Instead of executing the if block( onAlarm) it is executing the else block.
Request you to suggests approaches to suffice this requirement.

Hi Sai Madalli,
An approach to it, would be use the syncMaxWaitTime with time that you need, its a configuration per domain.

Did you ever find a solution to your problem?
My situation is that I'm running a process that grabs data from a salesforce.com web service and dumps some of the data back into my local database. The process croaks after processing 850 or so records. I have also increased my PermSize memory to 512M.
Any ideas why all of a sudden after processing that many records it would stop working?
Thanks,
Adam

• Unable to deploy a BPEL process with rules

Hi All
I created a very simple BPEL process and defined a business Rule in composite, that I call from within my BPEL process.
I am however not able to deploy the project completely successfully.
I am using JDEV 11g to build/deploy my projects on a SOA_Suite_11g. Note that I can deploy a project successfully if it does not have a business rule.
This is what I see in the 'Deployment Log' tab:

Any ideas..
Thanks

"Too many open files" issue is most likely because of a (few) Sun JDK6 bug(s). These bugs may not even get fixed in JDK6. It could hit at runtime or compile time depending on the number of jar files getting used and/or a few other variations around the use of file descriptors at a time by the JDK/JRE. One can use "lsof -p <pid>" command on Linux and see how the File Descriptors are growing when this issue is seen. E.g. use the pid of junit java process and not the main Ant java process if you want to debug at runtime. For compile time, grep on the compiler process.
Increasing the limit of file descriptors is used as a workaround.
How to increase per-process per-user file descriptor limit on your Linux hosted box:
Using "limit" (csh) or "ulimit" (bash) command find out what is the value of "descriptors". As a root user (use sudo) edit /etc/security/limits.conf file.
Close your x term and re-open (or re-connect your NX client) for this change to take effect. System re-start should not be required. If you are not able to increase the limit for some reason using these steps, try a few other things like re-starting your VNC server (or something similar), re-start your Linux box.

Kindly help me in this regard

Solution:
Workaround the issue immediately by removing the "ns1:" qualification on the operation for the binding.jca entry in the composite.xml and redeploying.
For example:
From:
<binding.jca config="BAPI_COMPANYCODE_GETDETAIL_invoke_3P.jca"
operation="ns1:BAPI_COMPANYCODE_GETDETAIL"/>
To:
<binding.jca config="BAPI_COMPANYCODE_GETDETAIL_invoke_3P.jca"
operation="BAPI_COMPANYCODE_GETDETAIL"/>

• Help needed in oracle 11g soa suite.........(BPEL Process manager)

we tried to download bpel process manager 11g but as per oracle it is under Oracle Fusion Middleware 11gR1 so we have downloaded the same also.....*
but the problem is agter installation we are not getting anuthing called oracle bpel process manager and also we are not able to run soa suite..........*
Can you please suggest how we can install the same or is there any other way so that we can run bpel process manager.*

Hi,
Download SOA 11.1.1.2.0 from OTN.
1. Don't forget to download RCU (Repository Configuration Utility). It is an extractable zip folder. Extract it. Navigate to its bin folder. Invoke rcu.sh/rcu.bat. It will open RCU. Choose Create. Enter your db details. In the next screen, choose SOA Infrastructure schema. Provide a schema prefix. Default would be 'DEV'. Proceed with further steps.
2. After installing 11gR1, navigate to your $ORACLE_HOME/common/bin
Invoke config.sh/config.cmd based on your OS. This will open the configuration wizard.
Choose create domain option. Enter the domain name. Select the templates: SOA Suite and Enterprise Manager. In the JDBC Datasources screen, enter the SOA schema information, db details. Complete the wizard. No need to customize anything else. This will create a SOA Domain.
3. Run the setNMProps.sh/cmd from $MW_HOME/oracle_common/common/bin folder.
4. Navigate to $MW_HOME/wlserver_10.3/server/bin. Execute startNodeManager.sh/cmd. This will start the node manager.
5. Now navigate to your $DOMAIN_HOME. You will be able to find startWeblogic.cmd/sh file. Execute it. This will start your Admin Server.
6. Once the server started, login to WLS Admin Console (http://host:7001/console). Navigate to Servers. Click on Control tab. Select soa_server1. Start the server.
This will start the SOA server. To test your soa is up, access the url http://host:8001/soa-infra
There is no BPEL Console/ ESB Console / OWSM console in 11g. Everything is managed from your EM. EM url would be http://host:admin_server_port/em (http://host:7001/em)

• Problems updating projects to new versions of Premiere (CS5 to CC and CC to CC 2014) Memory consumption during re-index and Offline MPEG Clips in CC 2014

I have 24GB of RAM in my 64 bit Windows 7 system running on RAID 5 with an i7 CPU.
A while ago I updated from Premiere CS5 to CC and then from Premiere CC to CC 2014. I updated all my then current projects to the new version as well.
Most of the projects contained 1080i 25fps (1080x1440 anamorphic) MPEG clips originally imported (captured from HDV tape) from a Sony HDV camera using Premiere CS5 or CC.
Memory consumption during re-indexing.
When updating projects I experienced frequent crashes going from CS5 to CC and later going from CC to CC 2014. Updating projects caused all clips in the project to be re-indexed. The crashes were due to the re-indexing process causing excessive RAM consumption and I had to re-open each project several times before the re-index would eventually complete successfully. This is despite using the setting to limit the RAM consumed by Premiere to much less than the 24GB RAM in my system.
I checked that clips played; there were no errors generated; no clips showed as Offline.
Some Clips now Offline:Importer CC 2014
Now, after some months editing one project I found some of the MPEG clips have been flagged as "Offline: Importer" and will not relink. The error reported is "An error occurred decompressing video or audio".
The same clips play perfectly well in, for example, Windows Media Player.
I still have the earlier Premiere CC and the project file and the clips that CC 2014 importer rejects are still OK in the Premiere CC version of the project.
It seems that the importer in CC 2014 has a bug that causes it to reject MPEG clips with which earlier versions of Premiere had no problem.
It's not the sort of problem expected with a premium product.
After this experience, I will not be updating premiere mid-project ever again.
How can I get these clips into CC 2014? I can't go back to the version of the project in Premiere CC without losing hours of work/edits in Premiere CC 2014.
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

To answer my own question: I could find no answer to this myself and, with there being no replies in this forum, I have resorted to re-capturing the affected HDV tapes from scratch.
Luckily, I still had my HDV camera and the source tapes and had not already used any of the clips that became Offline in Premiere Pro CC 2014.
It seems clear that the MPEG importer in Premiere Pro CC 2014 rejects clips that Premiere Pro CC once accepted. It's a pretty horrible bug that ought to be fixed. Whether Adobe have a workaround or at least know about this issue and are working on it is unknown.
It also seems clear that the clip re-indexing process that occurs when upgrading a project (from CS5 to CC and also from CC to CC 2014) has a bug which causes memory consumption to grow continuously while it runs. I have 24GB RAM in my system and regardless of the amount RAM I allocated to Premiere Pro, it would eventually crash. Fortunately on restarting Premiere Pro and re-loading the project, re-indexing would resume where it left off, and, depending on the size of the project (number of clips to be indexed), after many repeated crashes and restarts re-indexing would eventually complete and the project would be OK after that.
It also seems clear that Adobe support isn't the greatest at recognising and responding when there are technical issues, publishing "known issues" (I could find no Adobe reference to either of these issues) or publishing workarounds. I logged the re-index issue as a bug and had zero response. Surely I am not the only one who has experienced these particular issues?
This is very poor support for what is supposed to be a premium product.
Lesson learned: I won't be upgrading Premiere again mid project after these experiences.

• Reg: SQL select Query in BPEL process flow

Hi,
I am suppose to execute a SQL select query (in BPEL Process flow) as mention below in JDeveloper using Database adapter.

SELECT LENGTH, WIDTH, HEIGHT, WEIGHT,

LENGTH*WIDTH* HEIGHT AS ITEM_CUBE

FROM CUBE

WHERE ITEM= <xyz>

AND OBJECT= (SELECT CASE_NAME FROM CUBE_SUPPLIER WHERE ITEM=<xyz> AND SUPP_IND = ‘Y')
Now my question is:
1. What does this "*" refer to in the query and how can I retrieve the value of LENGTH*WIDTH* HEIGHT from the query where LENGTH,WIDTH and HEIGHT are the individual field in the table.
2.What does this " AS" refer to? If " ITEM_CUBE " is the alies for the table name "ITEM" to retrieve the value, then query shoud be evaluated as

SELECT LENGTH, WIDTH, HEIGHT, WEIGHT,

LENGTH*WIDTH* HEIGHT AS ITEM_CUBE

FROM CUBE

WHERE ITEM_CUBE.ITEM= <xyz>

AND ITEM_CUBE.OBJECT= (SELECT CASE_NAME FROM CUBE_SUPPLIER WHERE ITEM=<xyz> AND SUPP_IND = ‘Y')
Is my assumption correct?
Please suggest asap.
Thanks...

Hi
Thank for your reply!
I have a nested select query which performs on two different table as shown below:

SELECT LENGTH, WIDTH, HEIGHT, WEIGHT,

LENGTH*WIDTH* HEIGHT AS ITEM_CUBE

FROM CUBE

WHERE ITEM= <abc>

AND OBJECT= (SELECT NAME FROM SUPPLIER WHERE ITEM=<Item> AND SUPP_IND = ‘Y')
I am using DB adapter of Oracle JDeveloper in BPEL process flow, where I can able to select only one master table in DB adapter say SUPPLIER and its attributes at a time. But as per my requirment I need to select both the table (CUBE and SUPPLIER) in a single adapter to execute my query.
It can be achievable by using two DB adapter , One to execute the nested query and another to execute the main qyery considering value of nested query as a parameter. But I want to achieve it by using a single one.
Am I correct with my concept?
Please suggest how to get it ?
