Menu Bar Items Often Grayed Out

Often, selections in iTunes' drop down menus are grayed out, making them unusable. I've tried reinstalling iTunes but the issue persists.
Anyone know of a fix for this?

Well..I can't duplicate a situation where visualizer isn't available. And play seems to always available, though next, previous are not UNLESS a track is currently playing.
What are you selected on within the iTunes interface? And do you have your iPod connected? (Don't know that it would make a difference, but I currently do not have mine connected...so just for comparison purposes.)

  • Step into and other debugging items are grayed out in ISE debug menu in PS4.0

    hi friends
i don't know why things go wrong for me
it's about 3 hours that i am googling & studying documents on how to use Debugger in PS 4.0 ISE
the problem is i open my script in ISE, but when i open debug menu, step over,
step into, step out, stop debugger and many other items on debug menu in ISE are
    gray out.
( my script contains about 20 commands)
i need to run my script in line by line method (step into)
    but its gray out  :-(
i studies many pages regarding powershell debugger but none of the mentioned first enabling debugger ( i think maybe it's off by default)
am i on the right way ? is debugger feature by default off in PS 4.0 ISE? is this what debugging items are gray out?
i looked for a cmdet to enumerate the current state of ISE debugger (on or off) but unfortunately didn't find anything.
another confusion: is it necessary to run the entire script at least one time so that step into feature be available to use?
is yes, that's too bad. i want first examine my script line by line
    any help please
    thanks in advanced

Unless you have break points inserted and the script actually running, then those options will be greyed out. You need to first insert your break point, and then run the script. Once the code where the break point is going to be executed, the script
will stop there allowing you to step into or out of

    Hi clayman
    thanks for your answer. useful
after examining many different states finally i discovered the Hidden rule which i didn't find this on the net.
    the rule is:
when we want to examine our entire script line by line ( step into our script), we must create a line breakpoint on the
first line of the script &
then press F5, now the items on the debug menu are available such as step into
i wrote this for people who encounter such problem but after lots of search on the internet, they find no document describing this

  • The Import item is grayed out in the File menu. How do I activate it?

I want to import my favorites from Internet Explorer, but under the File menu, the Import item is grayed out. How do I make it available?

    * Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) [[Private Browsing]] mode
    * In Private Browsing mode some menu items are disabled (grayed) and features like visited links are disabled and not showing
    * You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing", possibly grayed
    * You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
    * To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"
You also export the Favorites in IE to an HTML file and import that file in the Firefox Bookmarks Manager.
    * Export the favorites in IE to an HTML file (bookmarks.html): File > Import and Export
    * Import the HTML file in Firefox: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML: From File

  • Menu Bar Items

Since installing Snow Leopard, I notice a new icon in the menu bar. It is a series of bars of incremental size, such as you would see on a cell phone. It is grayed out, and when I click on it, it simply says "Initializing..."
    Any ideas what that is?
And this leads me to a more general question: How can all of these icons be identified?
    Thanks.

I've been seeing this appear on my Macbook. I'm running 10.6.2, but I've been seeing it intermittently since upgrading to 10.6. I've only see it on my MacBook, not my Mac Pro. I usually drag it out of the menu bar, but it always reappears over the next few days, seemingly at random.
    It looks like this: http://imgur.com/bsNvX.png
the only reason it's showing the RSSI reading is because I held down option while clicking on it.
It's been bothering me for months, and this sounds stupid but I may have figured it out while writing this post. I sometimes charge my LG Chocolate 3 (Verizon Wireless) by plugging it in to my Macbook via USB. I think that plugging in my phone triggers this menu bar item. Does this sound correct to anyone else who's seeing this?
I don't have a data plan, so luckily it never seems to connect.

  • LabVIEW OI - Disabling Menu Bar Items

I am working with the Full featured OI example that comes with TS 4.2 installation. I need to disable many of the menu bar items. What is the best way to go about doing this?

    K_seeker,
A little more information will help in understanding what you need.  Do you need entire menus gone, grayed out, or either?  What about the menu items?  Which ones? What are you trying to acheive by doing that?  Depending on what you really want to have happen, there may be other alternatives to changing the menus.

Muse trial version only has "close" for option under file menu and it's grayed out.

Some menu entries in the main menu bar are hidden if you use the mouse and only appear if you use the keyboard to open the menu (Bug 626825).
You can see the difference if you use Alt+F to open the File menu or other menus like the Edit menu (Alt+E) and Bookmarks menu (Alt+B) and compare that to what you see if you use the mouse to open the menu after you have made the menu bar visible by tapping Alt or by pressing F10.
Add code to userChrome.css below the @namespace line to make the hidden items appear again.

  • Missing Menu bar items - last effort

I've searched and read here and found no solutions, so I'm posting this as a final attempt.
I'm working with a system new to me. It had OS 9 on it when I got it. I checked for firmware updates that might be needed and it seemed current, so I installed 10.4 from my retail disc (versus disk from my G5). No problems. I did a custom install with none of the foreign (to USofA) languages and only a couple of the printer manufacturers drivers. Once installation complete, I finished the setup. Repaired disk permissions, then ran the stand alone 10.4.6 combo update. Repair disk permissions again - then used software update as a shoping list for needed updates and downloaded most of them and installed in the order released. Those I didn't download, I used software update to install. From the MacFixit site, I found that reinstalling the combo update fixed this issue for some - it did not for me. I also tried, System Preferences, and turning them on, but typically they would not show and in one instance (I think it was Sound, volume control) the box would check, from my clicking on it, then the beach ball, then would unchecked - all on it's own.
This is the second rebuild of the system and still the issue persists. The first rebuild was with a 200 GB HD in the system, but it's too large to make full use of with the stock controller, so I purchased new 120 GB HD.
I have no third party menu bar items and almost no third party software on the system. The primary piece is the current version of Cocktail, which I have been using to repair permissions, etc. though I have also used Apple's Disk Utility for the same and seen no difference. I have also tried deleting various Apple pref files, per other threads in this forum - to no avail.
One last tidbit - in case it means something to someone - restarts on this system take forever and sometimes I have to do a manual shut down holding the power button in. This is not anything I've seen before - on the dozens of systems I've worked with/on.
At this point, I see nothing more to try than move to an earlier version of Mac OS X, perhaps 10.3 even, though I really wanted 10.4 for my wife's system. I've worked with 10.4.6 on many systems and not seen this, including my dual 800 G4 and my dual 2.7 G5.

No FW or USB devices, other than Apple USB keyboard plugged into the cpu and Apple single button mouse plugged into the keyboard.
BUT - I may have figured out what was going on. This is the slowest system I've put 10.4 on and it's been awhile since 10.4 has been out. I started thinking about what kinds of issues people had when it was first released and I recalled a lot of people getting hung up by the initial Spotlight indexing. Since I had a hunch this was somehow a factor, I decided to try turning sleep off and letting the system sit for awhile. When I started it and worked with the first five or ten minutes, the icons were not there. But when I came back an hour or so later, they were. I restarted the system and it did so in the manner I would expect, not hanging as it had all the other times. Once restarted the icons showed up. I have since installed the stand alone 10.4.2 combo and restarted and the icons are still there. Will go for 10.4.6 and see what happens.
My initial theory at this point is this. This is the slowest system I've put 10.4 on and I hadn't seen much of an impact on my other systems from the initial Spotlight indexing, but for whatever reason, it seem to really impact this system. I didn't see this on my dual 800 G4, nor the dual 2.7 G5, but I think that is what was going on with this system. That's my current theory until I hear something that seems more plausible.

  • Menu Bar items invisible in Safari full screen mode

I have a brand new MacBook Pro 13" Retina, mid-2014 (the MGX72). When I use Safari in full screen mode, then move the cursor to the very top of the screen, which is supposed to bring back the Menu bar, a blank space representing the Menu Bar appears, and if I move the cursor to any place on that blank space and click, I see the items/options associated with Menu Bar items. So it's like the Menu Bar items are there, but they're invisible. This has to be a glitch of some type. My MacBook Air doesn't do this; the Menu Bar items appear normally, as they should. Is there a fix for this? All the usual suspects for bringing Safari out of full screen mode work fine, but that's not the idea. The Menu Bar items are supposed to become visible and they do not.

No, dont return it, its a glitch in Safari, and VERY annoying. I first would have to Force Quit Safari, but later learned to keep hovering the mouse in the upper right corner, even tho nothing, yeah nothing,,,,is visible.
Keep the mouse there, and after a bit, you will see the little arrows pointing in, hit them.
But to keep this from happening again, Im not sure.
So anybody with further info, please post it here.

  • Why did my menu bar items dissappear? please help

my menu bar items such as wireless, time, and battery life even spot light are not showing anymore, i installed applejack and it did nothing, i tried going into prefrences i click on adding them to the menu bar, but the check mark disappears after 5 sec and nothing shows up, please help any ideas

Did you try just logging out and back in.  While you can go into menu extras and start double clicking desired menu items I think doing that way may not be permanent.  You should go to the individual System Preferences and make sure the appropriate checkboxes are set to place that prefrences in the menu.

  • Unknown menu bar item

Does anybody recognize this menu bar item? It shows up in 2 places every now and then, usually faintly towards the middle, and darker towards the right of the menu bar, and neithjer of them responds to any clicks (right, left, option, command or combinations thereof). If I restart or log out and in it's usually gone—anybody seen this before?

  • Menu bar items lighting up on their own without my hovering over them

A few minutes ago all of the menu bar items were lighting up in succession over and over - File, Edit, View, History, etc. would light up and the dropdowns would show as if I had moved the cursor over them. But I hadn't. My hand was not even on the mouse and the cursor arrow was way off to the lower right desktop. It was not moving. Then it seemed to randomize, different menu items lighting up and then it actually went to the Bookmarks dropdown and went down and selected a page and Firefox moved to that page. My hands were at my sides the whole time. But the cycling through the Menu items didn't stop and I didn't want it to keep going to pages I hadn't chosen so I did CTRL-ALT-DEL and closed Firefox. I've reopened it and it seems to be fine, but can anyone tell me what was going on?

    a GHOST probably :p

  • Menu Bar Items Order

Is there a way to get the various menu bar items, those to the left of the time, to be in the order I want them. For some reason I am not able to change the load order in 'Accounts' System Preference. In Panther I could drag them to the order I want but that doesn't seem to work in Tiger. Even though I could order them in Panther most of the time they still did NOT appear in the order I wanted them.
    Thanks,
    Doug

Just to expand a bit on Richard's answer:
Sometimes in Tiger the Command-click-hold and drag of the icon doesn't work, and sometimes the SystemUIServer gets a bee in its bonnet and rearranges them out of the blue. You shut down, they're the way you want, you restart and they've been rearranged and will not go back the way you want them. What I do when that happens is drag everything off with Command drag, restart SystemUIServer from Activity monitor, then go to the various things and start them in the order I want. Thus, moving from the Spotlight icon, I start my clock, then go to Sound, then AppleScriptUtility, then International/Input menu. Sometimes they stay way for months. Sometimes they get rearranged several times in a week. It's a bit of a pain.

  • Menu bar items hung/frozen

    Hi Folks,
The menu bar items at the top right hand side seem to have frozen. I checked system prefs, and although Airport, spaces and the clock are in the menu bar, all the "show in menu bar" boxes are unchecked.
The Airport and Spaces icons are greyed out, but both "applications" are functioning properly.
The time has stopped and the battery indicator is stuck at "(Calculating)".
I have done a restart but nothing changes. All i get is the beachball when i move the cursor over these items.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Pinkster

The SystemUIServer runs all the third-party and customized menu items, and if one is conflicting with another or with the server itself, then it can hang and prevent menus from working. Forcing it to quit will reload and refresh the settings that the server uses, and hopefully clear the problem.

  • Menu bar items disappear, and external hard disks not mounting

    Hi,
This problem started yesterday. I start up my Mac, and none of the menu bar items in the top-right of the screen show up. Then I noticed that none of my external hard disks had mounted.
Looking at the Activity Monitor, I saw that sustemuiserver was not running.
Reading around, I discovered that this usually follows a FrontRow hack (which I haven't installed). I tried deleting the ~/Library/preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file and logging out and back in again. Everything seems to work again, for a while. However, the same thing happened this morning.
Has anyone else experienced this, and anyone know a fix to stop it from happening?
    Thanks!
    Tom

I've been having the same problem for a while (I believe since 10.5.3). I have reinstalled OSX, installed OSX 10.5.6 combo hoping that it would fix it, but nothing yet. I have the problem only when I insert an expresscard into the slot and restart. It connects to a PCI expansion chassis. When I restart with the ExpressCard installed, all menu items dissappear and I can't eject volumes (hard drives) from the desktop. If I restart without the ExpressCard in, the menu bars seem to work properly. I tried with an older G4 running 10.4.11, with a CardBus card and the same chassis, and that worked fine... all menu bar items displayed and worked properly and I could eject disks.
I have also tried creating new users, but that didn't work either.

  • Menu bar items disappeared

all the menu bar items in the upper right corner disappeared...spotlight, date/time, network status, bluetooth, everything. When I open system preferences, and for example look at date and time, the option to display it is not checked, so I enable it, however that change doesn't seem to apply. When I reopen the system preferences, it's back to its original state.
This is on a powerbook g4 1.5ghz, OSX 10.4.5 with the latest updates.
also, I don't know if this is related or not, but if I click on the security icon in system preferences, system preferences crashes immediately.
    any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi, Alan.
    1. If you performed a hacked install of Front Row on your Mac, that has been know to cause this problem, particularly after recent Mac OS X updates. If that is the case, see my "Uninstalling the Front Row hack" FAQ.
    2. SystemUIServer crashes often indicate an incompatible third-party menu extras. Menu extras are the icons on the right side of the menu bar and managed by SystemUIServer. Many third-party menu extras are launched as either Startup or Login Items, usually Login Items. See my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ for steps that might help you with this problem.
    3. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
    4. With respect to the System Preferences crashes, immediately after one occurs, check Console for clues.
    Good luck!
