Menu Builder
Hello out there!
I need help and fast. I created an online simulation for our
distance education students. I created a menu builder for a CD
version of our simulations. I published it and linked it to the
menu. I worked well. However, I burned the project to a CD ROM. The
menu opens without difficultiy; however, when I link to any of the
simulations I receive a strange message error which I cannot read,
but the the file does not open.
Can anyone out there assist me with this dilema--I'm pressed
for times due to a last minute request.
Thanks!

Hi Liz_T
Let me guess. The error message you see probably simply says
F?
If this is the case, this would indicate that the MenuBuilder
output file can't locate the files it is linking to. Normally, this
can be overcome by making sure you create
relative links and not
absolute links in MenuBuilder.
If you create an absolute link, MenuBuilder expects to find
the files it is linking to in the same exact location each time.
For example:
C:\MyFiles\MyProjects\MenuBuilder\MyMenuBuilderProject. Links like
this will work just dandy on your PC when you test, but will fail
miserably when you send it off. This is because your users likely
don't have the same folder structure.
If you create a relative link, things are much better. One
way to help ensure you create relative links is to edit the
properties of the links in MenuBuilder. In the link properties,
click the check box labeled: "Save file with project". Once you do
this, make sure there is no path information showing in the "Link"
field. If so, remove it so all you see is the file name you are
linking to.
Give that a go and see if things are better.
Cheers... Rick

Problems with "Open other project" in menu builder
Hi everyone,
I have a series of projects that I want to link together
using the menu builder of the "Skin Editor" dialog.
I create my menu items, and for each item choose "Open other
project" in the "On click" dropdown. I then choose the project that
I want the menu item to open. For this example, lets say I chose a
project named "Viewing_Patients"
However, when I publish the project, run it, and then use the
menu to open the next project, it just opens up a browser window
trying to access the URL "
http://Viewing_Patients.htm/
Why is that?
To check my sanity, I created a Click Box in one of the
project's slide where I chose the exact same configuration - "Open
other project" for the "On success" dropdown, and the
"Viewing_Patients" project as the project to open when the box is
clicked.
And this works fine (it opens the "Viewing_Patients" project)
Why is my menu failing but not my click box?
Thanks very much in advance for any help!
- eriiki - tubbs -Hello Slothrop206,
Try the following steps:
1) Change your Action to be "Open URL or file"
2) Key in the relative URL to the movie you are attempting to
link. If it is in the same directory, simply key in the file name
of the .swf you are attempting to load.
3) Publish and test.
Let us know if this works for you. -
Internet Explorer 8 and Menu Builder Links
We just installed Internet Explorer 8 and the links from Menu
Builder are no longer working. They will work in IE 7, and Firefox.
Any ideas? Is anyone else having this problem?Hi there
Before attempting to answer this I'd like to know exactly how
you published the MenuBuilder output. Did you use the Flash output,
the HTML or the EXE?

Menu Builder for Captivate 4 anyone???
Just a quick question. Can't seem to find the menu builder in the lastest version of Captivate. Quite easy with the previous version. I have looked up the online help but it's not being very helpful...no surprise there - it keeps sending me to a search page of the adobe site.
I have 4 movies that I wish to combine together with a menu builder so the user can select which part they wish to play or select the 1st and have it play through all of the subsequent 4 clips (kind of like a DVD movie menu if you think about it).
Any easy solutions?
Thank you in advance.Hi there
MenuBuilder is not included in Captivate 4. Instead, you have the Aggregator.

Hello!
I just downloaded the Captivate 4 and I'm trying to find the
Menu Builder. Does Captivate 4 still have that piece of
functionality?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!Welcome to our community, Kevin
I believe MenuBuilder disappeared with this version. I'm
guessing that because Captivate now has a built in menuing
functionality and they are providing the aggregator with Captivate
4, they decided to drop MenuBuilder.

Links to exe and back to menu builder not working
I have read through all of the messages in the Forum and have
seen similar questions on this topic but no actual answers for this
precise situation. I apologize if I've just missed it. I'm fairly
new to Captivate and am using version 2. I am building a project
that will have 15 - 20 standalone .exe files.
This client is one of of the very few that does not have
Flash Player and will not due to security reasons. We will publish
and play from a DVD/CD.
The problem -
I need to have a course menu to link to each exe and then
link back from each exe to the main menu.
I have built a sample menu builder and exported it as an exe.
The links to the other files from this main menu work; however, I
cannot get the links in the separate exe files to access the main
menu exe (i.e. menu builder file). I either get a blank browser
window or other url window, or nothing happens and the screen just
stays there. The same thing will happen if I'm using the menu in
the skins feature.
I have ensured that all my files are in the same folder. I
have variations on the link, such as "relative" links as suggested
(i.e., removing path information and including only the file name).
I'm not sure Captivate Player will help because it sounds
like that is more for Web applications.
Please help!
Thanks
lahkabHi Don
Sure thing. The weird part of this is that it will require
using both MenuBuilder and Captivate to accomplish it. As you have
seen, Captivate likes to open things by feeding into HTTP. So
often, you wish to open a Word Document or a .PDF and you see a
browser open. The bizarre part of all this, is that if you look at
the address bar of the browser that opens, the path and filename
are correct! You click there and press Enter and by golly it loads
up. Go figure.
So here goes.
1. Note the exact file name you wish to open. Perhaps
"Menu.EXE".
2. Open MenuBuilder and create a new totally blank project.
3. Set your width and height by clicking Options > Project
Options. I think the smallest you can go is 320 wide and 200 high.
4. Click Insert > Clickbox.
5. For the link part, just type "Menu.EXE" (or whatever you
noted in step 1) Note that you should not enter any path. JUST the
file name. You might also click to place a check mark in the "Save
file with project" check box, just to be on the safe side.
6. Export the project as a Flash SWF.
7. Close MenuBuilder and open your Captivate project.
8. Edit the slide where your user will click to open the .EXE
and click Insert > Animation...
9. Insert the .SWF you created using MenuBuilder. Position it
over where you wish your user to click.
10. Publish your Captivate and test the link.
In case it will help, I've got a zip containing all the files
so you can see them in action (I included the source). No cloak and
dagger with this next part, just conserving bandwidth, as I'm
limited with this service and I don't wish everyone and their
brother to use it all up just looking to see. Shoot me an E-Mail
message to captiv8r (at) kc (dot) rr (dot) com and I'll send you a
link to download the files for you to play with.
Hopefully something here is helpful... Rick -
Menu Builder New Windows Wrong Size
Hello
I have what I thought would be a fairly simple scenario. 7
Captivate movies that I originally saved as .ExE and then learned
menu builder won't run those standalone .exe. So I saved them all
as .html/.swf and want to call them from a menu. I know everyone on
this forum hates menu builder and likes captivate player, but the
player does not a a digital signature and I don't want my users to
be prompted about running unsigned software.
I create the menu just fine. My menu is 800 x 500, my movies
are 800 x 500. My problem is if I open the movies in the same
window, I get scroll bars, even though they are the same size. Go
figure.
If I open my movies in a new window, I tell it to open them
in a new window sized 800 x 500 but it opens the browser full
screen.
Arrgggh! I am tearing my hair. I've tried saving the menu as
a standalone (.exe) and as a .swf and get the same results each
time.
Please help. The presentation is 99% finished and the last 1%
has taken as long as the entire project.
Thanks
TeriWell, I'm dealing with the scrollbars appearing on the
content window, even though the code says scrollbars=no. ???
I'm running the content window full screen; there should be
any scroll bars.
So, I feel your pain. -
Hi Guys,
I am trying to edit an menu screen but each time I try to
save the changes I get this error message
"Access Violation at address 00420E1C in module
'Menubuilder.exe' Read of address 00000008"
Does anybody have any ideas?, I have tried deleting the menu
& starting again but still have same problem
Thanks
MarkHi Rick
It seems to happen once I have set the menu up & try to
edit any of the settings after previewing it, I have found that if
after getting the message if I reboot my PC, it then allows me to
go in & change the settings & save them, but as soon as I
have preview it again, I get the same message if I go back to
change anything when I try to save the changes. It looks as if
after the preview Captivate is not releasing all the files, but
this does not help resolve the problem & I really can't keep
rebooting my PC when ever I want to change something.
This is the first time I have used Menu Builder & at the
moment I am just saving it to my local harddrive. Also once you
have had the message once you can't save anything till you reboot
& finally if I don't preview it I can make as may changes as I
like until I preview.
Hope this extra info helps

Menu Builder - exiting from course
Hi
I use Menu builder to showcase multi module course. When
publishing, the browser bar seems to show in our own environment,
but when loaded to our LMS it seems to disappear. I generally get
round this by putting a small caption on saying Press Alt + F4 to
close this window. but when I forget, there's no way users can
close it, as there's no skin on the menu builder, and no close
button options... Any ideas guys. Thx in advance, Jenni ;-)Hi Jenni_NT
One way to add a button that closes the movie is to configure
your Project Start and End options to Close the project when it
finishes. Then insert a button that simply points to the last
slide.
Cheers... Rick -
We are able to get the Menu Builder to work just fine on our
servers. However, if we post the files to our web server (using a
program called Harvest), the button at the end of each module won't
take us back to the menu builder (though the Menu Builder links
correctly to each module).
Also, the click box to launch an Excel file works fine on our
internal network, yet won't work when working from a URL.
Any ideas?
rgetzHi David,
To solve your problem, do the following:
1. from the HTML code of your page, make the following
changes:
1.1 - Find <ul class="MenuBarHorizontal style3"
id="MenuBar">, and change it to: <ul
class="MenuBarHorizontal" id="MenuBar">
1.2 - Find all <div align="center" class="style1">
</div> and remove these tags. remember to remove the starting
tag and the closing tag
2. in the CSS code, find the following class:
UL.MenuBarHorizontal A {..}
insert: font-weight: bold; font-family: Arial;
text-align:center;
3. find the following class: UL.MenuBarHorizontal LI { ... }
change: text-align:center to text-align:left
that should fix your problem with IE whilst keeping the menu
styling you already have. if you need any help in implementing the
above changes tell me.
tested: Firefox 2 / IE 6 works fine.
best regards, -
I have been trying package of 4 video's using Menu Builder. I
get no errors when building, saving or exporting. I save file with
each link. I export as an .exe file. I save it to my network drive
and send and email to my collegues to test it. If they follow the
path to the link, it's fine, however if I try to email the .exe
file, they get an error that simply says "F".
I've also noticed that the size of the .exe file is smaller
than my individual files. I would assume that it should be more
than the combined total. I guessing that the files are not saving
with the project. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using captivate 1
More info: As I continue to try and fix this, I've seen that
the menu only works if the .exe file is in the same folder as the
.exe. I want to upload this to my LMS (SUM Total), therefore I need
only the .exe file with my mini movies integrated into the .exe.
Please help, if I had hair, I would be pulling it out right
now!!quote:

Thanks Rick, but the situation the other person is having is
slightly different. The other poster wants to have his exe file and
the mini videos in the same place. I want to combine my video's
into 1 large video with menu builder. Basically integrate
everything into one. Is that possible?
BTW I did go back to see if I had relative links and they
are. There is no path information, just html file name. -
I am in the process of putting together a training for an
in-house software application. I have 11 different modules and
would like to branch them off of a navigation screen. I have
created a on slide module with 11 buttons to branch to other
projects. Should i continue with this route or will Menu Builder
work better? I am very unfamiliar with menu builder so any
information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
DeniseHi Denise
I'd be reluctant to use MenuBuilder for anything more than a
handful of modules. Perhaps four or five.
You might explore the Menu Wizard application offered by

General description of Menu Builder
Where can I find a general description of menu builder, what
it does and how to use it? I find all the details of how to create
one in Help but I want to know the basics of what it is and what I
can expect from it.Hi CareFactsME and welcome to our community
Here is MenuBuilder in a nutshell. Basically it's like a way
way way simple way to create a front end menu that might be used to
present a handfull of Captivate movies. Think of MenuBuilder as you
would Captivate. But with no ability to record. You only create
single slide projects with Click Boxes, Images and Text. The whole
idea is to present a single page that calls other movies. A "Menu"
page.
Does that help better explain it?

Adding buttons after menu build
I have recently completed a menu in Motion and I want to add the buttons 30secs into he build as i have a bit of an introduction. How do you add buttons at this point and attach assets, I have not figured out how to stop the menu at the location I wish to have the buttons appear.
Any advice would be great as I have spent lots of time on this menu.

Make the background movies and make an overlay (do not use DVD SP to make the buttons by dragging items on) The buttons will appear at the loop point (described in the motion.php) -
