Oracle Rdb JDBC: Insufficient global memory

Environment:
IA64 OpenVMS 8.3
Java RTE version 1.5
Oracle RDB version 7.2-2
SQL/services version 7.3
JDBC server for RDB version 7.3
JDBC-Thin driver version 7.3
The problem:
we have a JDBC dispatcher with 20 executor processes.
We have a client application that performs connect/disconnect to the database before/after each sql select statement.
Sometimes the query doesn't terminate successfully and we get the following error in
the JDBC log file:
RDB$CLIENT_ID_0000038D C00000000*T 201010-21 12:19:13.409 : [email protected] msg : INIT_V713 send>>>>>>>>>>>>> System Error : Insufficient global memory
any help?

I would start with RDB administration/configuration documents. It's a DBMS server issue,
not JDBC. Though it may or may not help, in principal, if yo can keep and re-use connections
instead of repeatedly opening and closing, it is usually faster and less burdensome on the DBMS...

    hello.
    i connect to my oracle driver using this
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    but now i have to use oracle RDB and i want to ask how that is done?
    do i have to download another jar for that?
    and how is the connection string done?
    thanks

    nope.
    you're getting me all wrong
    i already have ojdbc14.jar and i already connected to oracle 9iHow did you do that without knowing the connection string?
    the problem is with oracle RDB jdbc
    that's another different matter.What? I don't understand.
    oracle rdb runs under open vms and you have to
    install some other things before the rdb jar itself.I don't know about running Oracle on OpenVMS. Sorry.
    and i also need the connections tring for the class.How did you "connect" without it?
    I gave you a link to the docs, which should tell you what the connection string syntax is. It'll look something like this:
    jdbc:oracle:thin:@host:1521:database%

  • Re: WebLogic RDB jdbc problem

    Hi Joe,
    I tried the two things you asked:
    1. Setting the initial and max capacity of the Connection Pool to 1 does not make
    any further difference, the reselt set is still sometimes empty.
    2. If I use the code from the stand-alone application (thus if I get the connection
    directly from the driver) than I get a good result: the retrieved result set is,
    as far as I can see, always correctly filled.
    In addition I tried to cast the Connection to WLConnection and then get the vendor
    connection from it, and than to proceed with this connection further on, but this
    did not make it any better.

    Hi Joe,
    thanks for your quick answer to my questions. I red your sugestionsand tried
    them out but unfortunately it did not make me come any further in searchfor answer
    to this odd problem. Setting the statement cache size to 0 (I've alreadytried
    this before your response) did not make any difference at all. Refreshingthe
    statement before reuse neighter.
    I also tried to make the stand-alone application to go wrong. But nomatter whether
    I reuse connection and/or statement or whether I instantiate the newones every
    time, the execution of the statement always comes back with a validand filled
    ResultSet.
    Interesting thing to mention aboout executing the statement withinthe server
    is that if I put it in a loop of let say 100 repeats, it succeeds orit fails
    all 100 times. Next time i execute this bean method where the loopis situated
    it will again succeed or fail all 100 times. It remains consequentwithin the
    same loop/bean method. Even if I get the data source and the connectionevery
    time again (100 times) it remains consequent. Thi is maybe interestingfinding
    but it does not say anything to me. Perhaps you can make some conclusionsout
    of it.
    Best regards,
    Almir.Hmmmmm.... Interesting. The only other thing I can suspect is that the
    driver
    is not threadsafe... Would you try these two experiments?
    1 - Alter the weblogic server to define the pool to have only one connection,
    ie: initial capacity = 1 and max capacity = 1. Let me know if the
    problem
    is still there.
    2 - Alter the application code you run in the server to get a connection
    directly
    from the driver, just like the standalone code.
    Let me know...

    Hi Almir.
    I highly suspect the RDB driver of a bug where re-using a given Prepared
    Statement
    will sometimes produce an empty result set. Weblogic will cache your
    prepared statements
    so when you call prepareStatement() we may transparently return you
    a
    previously-used
    statement for the same SQL and arguments.
    To prove my theory, please do these two things:
    1 - Define your pool's statement cache to be of size zero. This should
    make the problem
    go away.
    2 - In a standalone program, you can create a given PreparedStatement,
    and rerun it in
    a loop, and see if it ever returns an empty result set. I will showyou
    how to include
    the code we do to refresh the statement before reuse:
    try
    Class.forName ("oracle.rdb.jdbc.rdbThin.Driver");
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:rdbThin://<database_name>","<user>",
    "<pass>");
    String sqlStatement = "SELECT TABEL1.COLUMN1, TABEL1.COLUMN2,
    TABEL2.COLUMN1
    FROM TABEL1, TABEL2 WHERE (TABEL2.COLUMN2= TABEL1.COLUMN3) AND (TABEL2.COLUMN1
    = ?)ORDER BY TABEL1.COLUMN1";
    PreparedStatement ps = conn.prepareStatement(sqlStatement,
    ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);
    for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++)
    ps.setObject(1, new Integer(1));
    boolean result = ps.execute();
    ResultSet rs = ps.getResultSet();
    // check result set here
    rs.close();
    cleanUpStatementForReUse(ps);
    ps.close();
    conn.close();
    catch (Exception ex)
    System.out.println(ex);
    private void cleanUpStatementForReUse(PreparedStatement p)
    try { p.clearParameters(); p.clearBatch(); } catch (Throwable ignore)
    try { p.setEscapeProcessing(true); } catch (Throwable ignore) {}
    try
    if (p.getFetchDirection() != ResultSet.FETCH_FORWARD)

    } catch (Throwable ignore) {}

    Hello everybody,
    we are developing an application for Bea WebLogic Application Server8.1. This
    application uses data from an existing database. This is an OracleRDB 7-1.220
    database. Because the WebLogic AS does not include a JDBC driver forthis type
    of database we got one from Oracle: RDBJDBC71. I installed this driverand tested
    it by using a standalone Java application which executes a number
    of
    SQL statemens.
    This test was satisfying, no problems occured.
    Then, in order to use it within the application server, I defined
    a
    JDBC Connection
    Pool in WebLogic with corresponding Data Source. And it worked, ourapplication
    could connect with the database and execute the needed transactions.
    But after a while we noticed a realy strange problem. When a particularSELECT
    SQL stament is executed we expect a list of 6 records as result. Butsometimes
    the returned resultset is just empty. I tried this hundreds of times.No error
    or exception occurs but sometimes the response is correct and sometimesnot.
    In the first place we thought that the JDBC driver was causing thisproblem but
    then I executed the same SQL Select statement within a Java stand-aloneapplication
    (and not using the Application Server) and the result was correct.Repeating this
    hundreds of times did not change the outcome, the given resultset
    was
    always correct.
    I tried reconfigurating the Connection Pool in different ways but
    it
    did not make
    any difference: sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
    Here below you can see the code samples of both implementations.
    Stand-alone:

    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:rdbThin://<database_name>","<user>",

    PreparedStatement ps = conn.prepareStatement(sqlStatement,ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);

    boolean result = ps.execute();
    ResultSet rs = ps.getResultSet();
    // Result set is here always filled!!!!
    rs.close();
    ps.close();
    conn.close();
    catch (Exception ex)
    System.out.println(ex);
    Application server:
    try
    Context ctx = new InitialContext();
    Object object = ctx.lookup(data_store_name);
    DataStore ds = (DataStore)object;
    Connection conn = ds.getConnection();
    String sqlStatement = "SELECT TABEL1.COLUMN1, TABEL1.COLUMN2,TABEL2.COLUMN1
    FROM TABEL1, TABEL2 WHERE (TABEL2.COLUMN2= TABEL1.COLUMN3) AND (TABEL2.COLUMN1
    = ?)ORDER BY TABEL1.COLUMN1";
    PreparedStatement ps = (PreparedStatement)conn.prepareStatement(sqlStatement,
    ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE,ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);

    boolean result = ps.execute();
    ResultSet rs = ps.getResultSet();
    // Result set is here sometimes empty !!!!
    rs.close();
    ps.close();
    conn.close();

  • Oracle RDB Driver fails with JDBC/ODBC Bridge

    Has anyone experienced problems using the latest Oracle RDB
    Driver (3.0.2.0) with the JDBC/ODBC Bridge.
    We have been using the Oracle ODBC Driver for RDB (2.10.17)
    successfully on NT, but it is not supported on W2K. The new
    drivers work fine for Access etc., but fail with the bridge.
    Specifically, you can step thru a result set, but getObject()
    returns null for all fields.
    Any suggestions?

  • Oracle JDBC Thin Driver Memory leak in scrollable result set

    Hi,
    I am using oracle 8.1.7 with oracle thin jdbc driver (classes12.zip) with jre 1.2.2. When I try to use the scrollable resultset and fetch records with the default fetch size, I run into memory leaks. When the records fetched are large(10000 records) over a period of access I get "outofmemory" error because of the leak. There is no use increasing the heap size as the leak is anyhow there.
    I tried using optimizeit and found there is a huge amout of memory leak for each execution of scrollable resultsets and this memory leak is propotional to the no of records fetched. This memory leak is not released even when i set the resultset,statement objects to null. Also when i use methods like scrollabelresultset.last() this memory leak increases.
    So is this a problem with the driver or i am doing some wrong.
    If some of you can help me with a solution to solve this it would be of help. If needed i can provide some statistics of these memory leaks using optimize it and share the code.
    Thanks
    Rajesh

    This thread is ancient and the original was about the 8.1.7 drivers. Please start a new thread. Be sure to include driver and database versions, stack traces, sample code and why you think there is a memory leak.

  • Oracle 8i jdbc/Tomcat connection issues

    Tomcat 4.1.8
    Oracle 8i JDBC Driver
    I have been able to create the DataSource as a global resource and as a local resource inside the context of the application.
    The code hangs when it attempts to create a connection. I have been able to connect to the database and perform the necessary query in a standalone application to ensure that I actually can connect.
    JSP Code:
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>VTW App</title>
    </head>
    <body>

    tst.init();
    %>
    <h2>Results</h2>
    <%= tst.getList() %>
    </body>
    </html>
    Java Code (Class called by JSP):
    package vtw;
    import javax.naming.*;
    import javax.sql.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class VTWApp {
    String list = "EMPTY";
    public void init() {

    if (ds != null) {
              System.out.println("DataSource Created ...");
    Connection conn = ds.getConnection();
    System.out.println("Connection Pulled");
    if(conn != null) {
                   System.out.println("Connection Good");
                   Statement st = conn.createStatement();
                   String query = "";

                        while(rs.next()) {
                             list += (rs.getString(1) + "," + rs.getString(2));
                   rs.close();
                   conn.close();

    I figured out the issue ...
    In the server.xml file the resource & resource params needed to be modified..
    1. Set type to oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSource
    2. Set factory to oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSourceFactory
    3. In the Java code cast the context lookup to an OracleDataSource instead of a java.sql.DataSource
    Oracles DataSource does not subclass the jdbc DataSource for its OracleDataSource class everything works fine now.

  • Where can I download complete Oracle Rdb documentation from?

    Could somebody advise, where I can find complete Oracle Rdb 7.2 documentation for downloading?
    At the Oracle site
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/rdb/rdb_doc_index.html#rmustathdbk
    the documentation seems not to be full. There are documents on different specific themes, and no document that describes the RDBMS in general (for instance like "Database Concepts" for Oracle Database). May be it doesn't exist at all?

    Hi Thanks,
    The page gives you the following

    *Instant Client Package - ODBC: Additional libraries for enabling ODBC applications  instantclient-odbc-win32-11.1.0.6.0.zip (725,154 bytes)
    It sounds like *Instant Client Package - ODBC: Additional libraries for enabling ODBC applications  instantclient-odbc-win32-11.1.0.6.0.zip (725,154 bytes)  is only the ODBC drivers (which is what I want), i do not want to install Oracle Client as I already have Oracle 11g DB install. I am testing windows ODBC applications with Oracle11g, hence the need for the Oracle11g ODBC drivers.
    thanks for your help. I will give these drivers a try.

    Nice breakdown. Much easier to try to help out from posts like that.
    As per our last discussion, I have downloaded Instant Client Downloads
    there is an application 'adrci.exe', Forget adrci. (it's just an extraneous tool)
    Follow installation instructions. (should include copying oci.dll and oraociei11.dll to a new folder of your choice)
    Finding the right doc in this case might be a little tricky, so try this:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e10646/oci01int.htm#i423362
    If that does not help, call back with a description of what you tried from what document.
    If anything needs to set in environment variable, please let me know, how to do. I haven't worked on environment variables.Depends on your OS.
    But try:
    Windows key / Start button, type in env, choose Edit system environemnt variables.
    Click Environment Variables.... In System variables section in bottom half, scroll down to Path. Select Path line and click Edit...
    In the front of value, add the instantclient folder. E.g. c:\oracle\instantclient;<here comes rest of PATH>
    >
    Also, the same thing happens with PL/SQL Developer, i'm using PL/SQL Developer version: 9.0.6.1665, when I entered username/password/database. The following message occuredYes, it also complains since 32-bit software pieces are missing.

  • Error while creating a report that uses Oracle OCI JDBC connectivity

    Please let me know why my CR and LF characters are removed from my forum posting *****
    Hi,
    I was trying to create a report that uses Oracle OCI JDBC connectivity. I am using Eclipse3.4 download from "cr4e-all-in-one-win_2.0.2.zip".  I have successfully created a JDBC OCI connection.
    The connection parameters are given below:
    URL: jdbc:oracle:oci8:@xe
    Database: xe
    username: <userName>
    password: <password>
    I have tested the above connection in Data source Explorer and it works fine!!!
    But I am getting the following error when I drag-and-drop a table from the list of tables. Not sure what I am missing here?  Any help is highly appreciated.

    Hi Ted,
    Thanks for the feedback. I was able to create a report in Creystal Reports Designer 2008 using OCI.  It is not allowing only in the Eclipse plugin. In our environment we are not allowed to user Oracle thin connections and ONLY OCI is allowed.
    1) Can you please let me know if there is a way to do this?
    2) Will it allow data sources using native database driver?
    3) If so, can I use JRC to create these reports from a desktop java program?
    Thanks & Regards

  • Oracle Rdb Driver 3.1.0.0 problem with blobs

    I am trying to convert an MsAccess application to use an MsAccess front end and an Oracle Rdb back end.
    I've created the test database under VMS and can successfully link to the Oracle Rdb tables from MSAccess 2000. One of the main reasons for converting to Oracle Rdb is to be able to store large word documents in the database. I was able to do that using Oracle rdb Driver v 3.00.02.06. I recently converted to Oracle Rdb Driver version 3.1.0.0 and can no longer access the Blob field containing the Word document. MsAccess now sees this field as type ‘Binary’ and I keep getting an ‘invalid field type’ error. (with 3.00.02.06 this field was seen by MsAccess as an ‘Ole Object’ and the getchunk and appendchunk functions for getting and saving a blob worked reasonably well).
    Is this a bug in 3.1.0.0 or is there some way to get MsAccess to recognize this Binary field type?

    I suspect you'll need to contact Oracle support on this. There aren't, to my knowledge, any RDB folks around here.

    I'm getting an error message when trying to install the Oracle Rdb Extension (7.3).
    I'm not sure if that extension has been upgraded for sql developer 4. Extensions written for previous versions won't work in sql developer 4 - they need to be modified to support the OSGI framework.
    Leave the thread open until one of the sql developer team members can answer this.
    Here is the note from the sql developer exchange home page
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/extensions-083825.html
    Special Note Regarding Extensions Developed Prior to SQL Developer
    v4.0:
    With the new release of SQL
    Developer 4.0, an extension that was written for a previous version of SQL
    Developer will no longer work. SQL Developer is built on the JDeveloper
    Framework. We have updated the framework to be current with the JDeveloper 12c
    release. With JDeveloper 11gR2, they switched to an OSGI framework. The JDeveloper team has published instructions for updating your extensions to be compatible with
    the new framework and SQL Developer v4.0.
    The Check for Updates interface
    has been updated to hide any 3rd party extensions to avoid confusion with
    extensions not loading. Once you have updated your extension for version 4 and
    beyond, let us know, and we'll update the system to make it available again. For
    questions regarding the process of going from the old to new framework, we have
    started a dedicated
    thread on the Forums. You can also email the Product Manager, Jeff Smith, to
    setup a call with one of our developers for additional assistance.
    As that note says if that extension is NOT for version 4 it shouldn't show up on the list of updates.

  • How to configure Oracle 10g to use 4GB memory

    I'm trying to configure Oracle 10g to use >4GB memory. Have configured server boot.ini with required flags (/3GB /PAE). Rebooted server then created standard database, then connected to db instance and changed oracle parameters DB_BLOCK_BUFFERS, USE_INDIRECT_DATA_BUFFERS as required. Restarted DB instance, DB fails to restarted with SGA memory error. According to oracle user docs the SGA is nolonger in effect due to previous settings. Can you provide example of SPFILE with parameters settings that do work and use >4GB memory. Current server has 8GB, 2 x Dual XEON core/processors (i.e. 8 processors)

    The recommended /3GB switches in the boot.ini file can only be used with the following operating systems editions (KB article 291988):
    Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
    Microsoft Windows 2000 Data Center Server
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Data Center Edition
    Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003
    Important: Windows 2000 and 2003 Server Standard Editions DO NOT SUPPORT /3GB Switch.
    So if your OS is listed above, then you cannot have a larger SGA.
